JANUARY 2015
Message from the Chairman
Happy New Year to all.
We have had a bit of a swap around on the steering group with Katy and Diane stepping
down from their roles as Chair and deputy chair. I am honoured to take on the role of
chairman from Katy. She has done a fantastic job to promote our association and it aims
over the last couple of years-the highlights of which have included the second NM-UK
Edinburgh meeting, the IONM course in Nottingham and the IONM study days. I am very
grateful to Katy for taking on the role as deputy chair for the time being and, of course, to all
the other members of the steering group who volunteer their time and without whom the
organisation would not be able to continue. We warmly welcome two new members of the
steering group- Dale Darbyshire who is the new Commercial liaison and Vania Pinto who will
be deputy to Lindsay Henderson, the new membership secretary.
Some of you will already know me, but many will not so, I want to take
!this opportunity to introduce myself. I have been involved in IONM for spinal surgery for
some time now and have settled in Norwich for the last 10 years after starting my career In
London. I am passionate about promoting excellence in our field, which Is the reason I joined
the NM_UK steering group when Christine Reber started NM_UK. I also set up and run the
web based SCM-UK google discussion which has proven to be a great way to chat and
swap information about IONM related topics.
I hope to be able to meet many of you at the next big event in the NM_UK calender which is
the scientific meeting 22-23rd April 2015 In Sheffield.

NEUROMONITORING UK
JANUARY 2015
This meeting has been in planning for a while. The spinal surgeons association (British
Scoliosis Society, BSS) asked us early in 2014 if we wanted to run our 2015 meeting
alongside theirs. There will be some joint sessions and several of our speakers will be UK
surgeons, but we also have the privilege of having 2 international speakers both of whom
are major contributors to the published literature on IONM:
Dr Tod Sloan, who will be familiar to those who attended the 2009
!London NM_UK meeting. He is an anaesthetist from Colorado with over 30 years
experience in neuromonitoring
Dr Francesco Sala is a Neurosurgeon from Verona with special
!
interests
in Paediatric Neurosurgery & Intraoperative Neurophysiology, He is one of the cofounders and the current president of ISIN.
And of course we will have our own UK based neuromonitoring speakers as well with a wide
range of topics being covered. The combination really does make this the IONM event of the
year and one not to miss. If you have not already signed up then details are available on the
NM_UK website and registration is via the BSS website.

The BSS are keen for as many of us as possible to attend the Gala dinner on
the Wednesday evening and so they have included an option to include the
Gala dinner at a reduced rate of £30 (£160 registration including the Gala
dinner).

NM_UK relies upon your support to continue to provide these meetings. Please do continue
your subscription – its only £15 a year so is a bargain and we cannot continue without it. The
steering group members work hard to ensure you get value for money. Most of the NM_UK
business is done by email and teleconferences which limits the administrative costs. This
years meeting administration is being done by BSS who have generously offered us the
opportunity at minimal cost for our delegates, but NM_UK will not earn any income from the
meeting so we need your subscriptions for the ongoing costs of the website, event insurance
and accountancy fees.
As I mentioned above we have a new membership secretary in Lindsay Henderson email.
Please contact Lindsay if you wish to join. If you are a subscribers please do encourage your
colleagues to join as well. We are a small group so we need as many of you as possible to
support our work.
We are always open to suggestions so please contact me if you have suggestions for future
events. If you have a suitable venue for one of the IONM study days then please let me
know. We aim to offer these events at minimal cost or free to our subscribers and to do this
we need offers of suitable venues for 30-40 people in locations with good transport links. I
can be contacted via [email protected]

Dear Subscribers,
Following the NM_UK AGM in Stanmore I am delighted to hand over the reigns of NM_UK

develop and evolve into the future.
