Fall 2014
The Arc of Monmouth is a non-profit agency serving persons with intellectual & developmental disabilities and their families since 1949 .
President’s Message
Joyce Quarles
It is an honor to be sending my first address as President
of The Arc of Monmouth. I look forward to a motivating
and active journey forward. As in the past, there are
many exciting events and goals for The Arc of Monmouth
in the months ahead.
We are thrilled to be celebrating The Arc of Monmouth’s
65th Anniversary on Friday, October 17. I would like to
extend a heartfelt thank you to the employees and staff
of The Arc, both past and present, who work tirelessly
to provide tremendous service to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
Join us for this event, as we display our gratitude and
celebrate all of the work The Arc of Monmouth has done
for the past 65 years.
(Above): Employment Services congratulates Ada (center)
who is celebrating her 1 year anniverary working at
the Gap. To her right is
her manager Jen, and behind Ada are her coworkers.
(Middle) Associate Executive Director Kathy
Mullery and her son
Chris participated in the
United Way of Monmouth
County’s Stuff the Bus
drive for school supplies.
I would also like to acknowledge all of those that volunteer and support all of our annual fundraisers and recreation events. During the time of my family’s participation with The Arc, words have not been able to express
the level of gratitude we have for the commitment and
dedication that is put forth. The amount of time and effort that is required to host events and run programs is
substantial and sincerely appreciated.
(Below) The Donoghue family came to
The Arc center to present a bequest
donation.

I encourage you to get involved as a committee member,

This year, the week beginning on September 7th was designated as
“National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week”. Each year,
this week serves as a reminder of the important work done by employees who provide care to persons with disabilities, and the need
to thank them for that work.
The Direct Support Professionals who are employed by The Arc of
Monmouth are caring, kind and dedicated to their work. They provide hands-on assistance with personal care tasks, they teach, they
advise, they comfort and they applaud accomplishments. They support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in
their homes, on the job, at vocational and day programs, at stores,
doctors’ offices, theaters, bowling alleys, wherever. They learn each
person’s preferences, talents, and quirks. They must follow a huge
variety of rules and regulations, while remembering that caring and
supporting the person is primary. They have to take lots of training
classes to keep learning new skills. They may work days, nights,
or evenings. They often give up parts of their holidays with family
to make the holiday special for the persons they serve. They serve
people through hurricanes and their aftermath, when snowed in, and
in the heat of the summer. They carry enormous responsibility for
those put in their care.
Our Direct Support Professionals are a very precious resource. I thank
them deeply for all that they do to support the persons served by The
Arc of Monmouth. Direct Support Professionals, your work is greatly
appreciated.
New Photographs and Videos
to Raise Greater Awareness
by Brett Colby
Attendees of Step Up for The Arc Walk & 5k may remember Pat Paladino, the photographer who snapped fun pictures of our guests. Recently, Pat has donated her time and resources to take new agency
photographs, highlighting individuals in each program.
James Gay of Most Remarkable Productions is also donating his time to
make several short awareness films for The Arc of Monmouth. James is
a renowned commercial videographer who regularly works for companies such as Nestle and ABC Television.

Passings
Joseph Giamanco
The Arc of Monmouth is sad to announce the passing of Joseph Giamanco. For over 25 years, he
and his wife Mollie were regular attendees and sponsors of the Winter Glow Ball.
Joe was a key component to leading the American Stock Exchange as being recognized as one of
the most prestigious exchanges in the world. Joe, along with other members, were instrumental
in introducing the options market.
Joe will be remembered for his warmth, generosity and sense of humor. While his first love was his
family, he made all who knew him feel special and loved.
Virginia Matthews
Virginia (Ginny) Matthews was born on May 25, 1941 and was served by The Arc for over 25 years.
She passed away on August 9, 2014.
Ginny was a beloved member of the Independent Living Program known for her high-spirited
personality and the way in which she attacked life. Ginny had an incredible ability to connect to
people who she saw as genuine and authentic. Strong, resilient, funny, engaging and pure are all
words that could be used to describe Ginny as an individual.
She also had a keen way of connecting with the people who supported her in achieving her goals.
Regardless of the obstacles that she would face in life, Ginny was always able to perservere and
accomplish the goals she had set for herself.
Jodi Solden
Jodi Solden, a resident of the Church Lane group home, was the type of person who was able to
draw people into her life. When speaking with someone, she would ask about their family or children, showing genuine interest in their lives. She was always seen assisting people in some way,
whether it was getting them a cup of coffee, holding open a door or picking up the mail for her
group home each week while visiting the office. She shared a positive view on life and would often
be seen or heard comforting others, even during her own illness.
Jodi loved hobbies such as beadwork, which she so generously shared with her staff, friends and
family. She and her family regularly participated in fundraising by being part of our annual walk.
Her generosity, smiling face and positive attitude will be missed by all at The Arc of Monmouth,
and especially by her Church Lane housemates of 27 years.
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Recently, The Arc of Monmouth was honored with a bequest from John and Helen Donoghue. The Arc of Monmouth is
extremely grateful to have been remembered by a family who dedicated so much of their lives to this agency and people with disabilities. In our next issue, we'll be featuring a retrospective of the Donoghues and this generous bequest.
Have you chosen to honor The Arc as part of your estate planning? Including The Arc of Monmouth in your will ensures
that The Arc will remain in service to people in need for generations to come.
It also gains you entry into our Legacy Society. Legacy Members are honored with a private annual dinner and a very
special place in The Arc’s history. For more information, or to let us know if you have already included The Arc in your
will, please contact [email protected] or (732) 493-1919 ext. 120.

Golf Classic Breaks All Records
by Edward Ahart
This year was a record breaker across the boards for The Arc’s Golf Classic. Not
only did we have more players and sponsors than ever before, but we raised over
$84,000! Over 100 golfers enjoyed perfect weather,
spectacular food and a wonderful time at Deal Golf
and Country Club.
There were various contests and prizes set up throughout the day for attendees.
During the outdoor cocktail hour, each guest got to try their luck by rolling 6 dice
to try to spell “The Arc” and win $25,000! On the golf course, we had 3 holein-one car give away contests, as well as a $5,000
putting contest and $1,000,000 shoot out!
Deal Country Club provided a lavish dinner which
included their famous endless lobster bar. We had a
successful silent auction, and our long-time friend
and supporter Vinnie Annarella was honored with an
award and various speeches by friends and supporters of The Arc.
We would like to sincerely thank our sponsors, participants and volunteers who all contributed to make this
year’s event the best golf outing we have hosted to date. Thank you to our committee, to The Anabel Foundation and co-chairs Joseph C. Roselle and Jack Privetera.

Goodbye Red Bank (MONARC) Thrift shop
by Carol Urbania
After 39 years, the Red Bank Thrift Store has closed its doors. Long-time manager Albert Westpy was eager to retire, and the decision was made to sell the
property. The store closed in February 2014, and individuals served by The Arc
were invited to come and take remaining clothing and housewares for free.
Even after donating remaining items to The Arc’s served individuals, the store
was still full of clothing, housewares and racks. Since they were generously
donated by so many wonderful community supporters, The Arc has been determined to see these items continue to benefit others. All summer, we have been
contacting local charities and other thrift shops to donate the remaining fixtures and clothing.
A new Thrift store at the Belford Methodist Church was very happy to take shelving, hangers, books, clothing racks and bookcases. The Monmouth County SPCA Thrift Shop was grateful to take the display cases,
clothing racks, mirrors and some clothing. Lunch Break took men’s and women’s suits, blazers, children’s
clothes and clothing racks. Project Paul, located in Keansburg, also took some clothing, shoes and coats.
The remaining apparel and garments were picked up by Clothing for the Needy in Neptune, New Jersey.
Many were sad to see this Red Bank institution close down, but we are grateful to all the customers who
supported this store and its mission to sustain the programs for people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. The Arc’s Matawan Thrift Shop remains open, and is located at 154 Main Street, Matawan.

Special Olympics
The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games’ Opening Ceremony was held at The Prudential Center in Newark,
New Jersey. The games themselves were then held at various colleges and universities throughout New
Jersey from June 14-21. Colleen Ciecura and Carissa Somers were members of the golf team for Team New
Jersey. Andrea Kocsis, Edward Siwakoski, Andy Patterson and Thomas Pacylowsky were all participating in
the bowling events. Andy and Thomas were both awarded bronze medals, and Andrea and Edward each received silver medals. Chris McMullen was on Team New Jersey for The Triathlon event, and he also received
the silver medal for his event.
We spoke to Chris about his experience as an athlete at this year’s Special Olympics USA Games, and he
described his event:
“The Triathlon is composed of a 600 yard swim, 12 miles on a bicycle and a 3 mile run. I had been training
for this event all year. The most difficult part was the 3 mile run, which was exhausting. My favorite part
was being able to participate on Team New Jersey and meeting new friends who were also on the triathlon
team. Since the games, we still get together to train and hang out.”
Congratulations to ALL who participated in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games!
The Arc’s own Kathy Mullery served as Director of Volunteers for Aquatics. This role required management
of over 700 volunteers for the aquatics events.
Speaking of aquatics, The Arc is involved with a Special Olympic New Jersey Aquatic Team.
Practice is held at The YMCA of Western Monmouth County in Freehold, NJ from October through June on
Sunday evenings for ages 8 and up.
For more information, contact Carol McMullen at (732) 577-0073.
“Xtra Special Olympics”
by Magdalena Aders
To be sure that everyone who wanted to had the opportunity to participate and
compete, The Meridian and Eatontown Achievement Centers decided to have
their very own competition called The Xtra Special Olympics, which turned out to
be a spectacular event.
“The XSO” were held at the Leon B. Smock 80
Acres Park in Eatontown. The three events were
basketball, Frisbee throwing and the grand finale
which was a “dash” (which also included
speed-walking to the finish line with assistance as
necessary). The traditional Special
Olympics-style atmosphere was created on a more
personal and intimate scale, complete with a series of drum rolls on a festive silver drum and a
torch comprised of a large flashlight with realistic construction-paper
flames.
Staff from the centers provided superb teamwork, which was augmented
by the assistance of the helpers. This made the event run smoothly and
provide enthusiastic fun and personal pride for all who took part. The
event concluded with a picnic and awards ceremony, where every participant received a medal.

ADULT SERVICES
Western Monmouth “Grows”
by Kelly Campbell
The Western Monmouth Achievement Center is pleased to welcome two new participants: Thomas
and David. We are also pleased to announce we have resumed our very popular weekly bowling
outings.
In other news, a recent purchase is going to open new doors for lines of communication with
some served individuals who have difficulty with speech. This new augmentative communication
application for the iPad is assisting those individuals and demonstrating improvements in both
communication skills and self-confidence.
Finally, a recent project researched at Western Monmouth has taught us that Monarch Butterflies
are an endangered species, largely due to the destruction of the bushes they use to feed and
reproduce along their migratory routes. We will be starting a special focus group that will work
to improve the plight of the Monarch butterflies. The individuals are excited to be involved in
this project.
EMPLOYMENT
Drop Off Center gets a History Lesson
by Nan Owen
The participants of the Drop Off Center had an opportunity to take a glimpse
into our nation’s past with a visit to the National Guard Militia Museum in
Sea Girt. Artifacts from New Jersey’s military history were on display, along
with real helicopters and tanks. By learning about brave men and women
who have served our country, the experience gave our participants a firsthand look at the challenges our veterans faced during that time. “Thank
You” to the National Guard Militia Museum for providing this wonderful and informative visit.
WOC
Partnership with Degs & Sal Fits like an Arm and Bracelet
by Elaine Richardson
The Work Opportunity Center began making bracelets for Degs & Sal, a Deal, New Jersey based
company in September of 2013. Almost a year later, WOC individuals have assembled over 4,398
bracelets. The 738 bracelets that are currently being assembled help to set that mark. Over
150,000 beads and accents have been used.
WOC individuals assemble the many color beads and various silver and gold accent metal pieces
on a cord, cut to size for the bracelet being made. Degs & Sal has 21 styles of beaded bracelets
made at WOC. For orders that are shipped directly to stores, WOC stamps the name Degs & Sal on
a small canvas bag and places the bracelet inside. To date, 1,253 bracelets have been placed into
stamped bags. The other bracelets are sold at trade shows and other venues. Thank you, Degs &
Sal, for placing your confidence in the professional work performed at WOC by our individuals.
You can view all of the 21 styles assembled by WOC and other Degs & Sal leather bracelets at
www.degsandsal.com. The artwork is also on display at WOC and available for purchase. To arrange a viewing, please contact (732) 229-4414.

ANNUAL MEETING & AWARDS RECEPTION
by Brett Colby
On Tuesday, June 24, The Arc of Monmouth welcomed nearly 100 guests to its Annual Meeting and Awards Reception.
After a sampling of delicious desserts (courtesy of The Arc’s Achievement Centers), outgoing Board President Roger
Trendowski welcomed the audience. The 2013 Annual Meeting minutes were approved and board members introduced themselves. Bill Mirkin called for approval of the 2014 Board Officers, and Mary Scott gave a presentation on
highlights from Fiscal Year 2014.
The Awards Ceremony began with the Volunteers of the Year Award, presented to
Phil & Arleen Fina. Director of Development Brett Colby spoke of Arleen’s 25 year
dedication to The Arc’s Winter Glow Ball, Phil’s 14 year service as board member
(including President), as well as the couple’s vital help with events such as the Golf
Classic and Wine Tasting.
2013 Award Recipient Trish Gomez presented the Employee of the Year award to
Residential’s Vera Fann. As Assistant Manager of The Arc’s
Supervised Apartments, Vera’s dedication and positive attitude have helped served individuals and staff to achieve
during challenging times, including unexpected passings and
Superstorm Sandy.
Mary Scott (left) and Brett Colby
(right) present the Volunteer of the
Year award to Phil and Arleen Fina. The
Professional of the Year award was given to Accounting’s
Alan Czarnek. Executive Director Mary Scott spoke of the financial expertise and insight Alan brings to every budget discussion. Alan humbly dedicated
his award to the entire accounting staff.
Mary Scott paused to surprise Associate Executive Director Kathy Mullery with The Arc Ambassador Award. Each year, this award is given to an individual who has stood out as a model
spokesperson for The Arc.
Dawn Delaney and Kristin Creed jointly presented the Health Care
Professional Award to Maria Marquette. As a dedicated, tenacious
nurse, they noted that Maria has been instrumental in helping to bring
the Health and Residential programs closer together.
Alan Czarnek,
Professional of the Year
Mary Scott presented Jersey Cares with an award for Distinguished Community Service.
Since Superstorm Sandy flooded The Arc’s Work Opportunity Center (WOC), Jersey Cares has
donated countless service hours in cleanup and instruction. They also donated iPads to the
center and ran a holiday party for WOC participants.
Jersey Cares,
Distinguished
Community Service Award
Terry Thompson of the Western Monmouth Achievement Center and Jessica Cannata of Alexandria Group Home presented Donald Kane with the Making Strides Award, commenting on
Donald’s growth as an individual.
Mary Scott returned to describe the impact that Ronan & Ronan Productions have had on many
departments at The Arc, through their production of the film “Believe and you can Achieve”. Although they could not
be present to accept the Community Media Excellence Award, their presence was still felt, as guests had a chance to
view the film at the start of the evening.
Also unable to attend were representatives of Saker Shop Rites, recipients of the Employer of the Year Award. Peter
Koch noted that Saker is a model employer, welcoming many individuals from The Arc as employees - in fact one individual has recently retired after 30 years at the grocery store!
The evening concluded with the presentation of the Bill Sackter Citizenship Award to Susan Haddow. The Independent Living Program’s Sandra Troia commented on Susan’s tremendous personal growth this year, which included her
moving into her own apartment - a lifelong goal.
The Arc congratulates all of this year’s recipients.

Hearing from Our Stakeholders: 2014 Survey Results
by Kathy Mullery
Survey results are in! In May we conducted our four annual surveys of persons we support, families, other
professionals and staff – and we learned good information about how The Arc is doing in meeting the expectations of these groups.
We received 280 responses from people who receive direct services and supports. More than 81% of
those who responded answered that, “This program ‘always’ helps me reach the goals I set for myself”.
Over 89% said that the staff “always” treats them with respect; this particular result surpasses the goal
of 85% that had been established in our FY 2014 Agency Performance Measurement Plan. When possible,
volunteers and staff not directly associated with the services and programs, assisted in conducting these
surveys of individuals.
We received 89 responses to our family survey this year. The majority of the responders identified themselves as parents (76%) followed by another family member (11%) and guardian/advocate (10%). In rating
satisfaction with The Arc’s services, 78% of respondents The Arc’s program or service did an “excellent” or
“very good” job in helping the individual reach their personal goals. This result fell just short of the goal
we had set of 80%.
The services that family members said will most be needed within the next 2 - 3 years were mental
health/behavioral supports, residential supports, transportation, employment and day program services.
Responders to our professionals’ survey rated recreation, achievement centers, employment supports
and Work Opportunity Center, and all ratings were excellent or very good. According to this group of
respondents, the services that should be expanded or developed in the future are job opportunities/job
coaching, respite, recreation, transportation and specialized programs for people with medical or behavioral issues.
Finally, in our staff survey, 129 staff responded. Overwhelmingly staff - even those in non-direct support
positions - indicated that the thing they like the most about working at The Arc of Monmouth is the people
we support.
Survey results have been shared with department heads, persons served, board and staff. Thank you to
everyone who participated. Your input is very important to us; the results are now helping us to plan short
and long range goals for The Arc.
The following donations were received between May 16 and August 31, 2014. This listing includes generous individuals, foundations
and corporations who donated to The Arc’s Annual Appeal as well as Special Events, Restricted Donations to WOC, Recreation, Employment Services and other programs. The Development Department makes every effort to publish names as requested.
