construction update
Reference August 4, 2015 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE August 2015 After closing for 71 hours on July 9-12, the new Doyle Drive was opened to traffic, eight hours earlier than expected! Several hundred workers placed over 2,800 tons of concrete, and removed more than 15,000 tons of materials, during the accident-free weekend. Although a great new stretch of highway is now open, there’s more to be done to finish the project. Construction activity will continue into mid-2016 and will include removing the temporary bypass, restoring and reconfiguring portions of the east end, covering the tunnels, reconstructing Halleck Street and installing landscaping. Did you know? The name of the roadway is still Doyle Drive, after Frank Doyle, the “father of the Golden Gate Bridge.” Presidio Parkway is the name of the new roadway design and refers to the construction project. DOYLE DRIVE BETWEEN THE TUNNELS TUNNELS Work will continue into the fall to install barrier rails and permanent striping and to build a retaining wall between the northbound and southbound roadways. Temporary barriers (k-rail) are in place to maintain a safe work zone adjacent to the highway. Until work is complete, Doyle Drive is still an active construction zone, and there are areas without safety shoulders. Please drive carefully and follow the 35 mph speed limit! HIGH VIADUCTS Ventilation opening in Southbound Battery Tunnel High Viaducts, showing rebar where widened roadway section is being removed (right), final design of edge (left) and Pet Cemetery (bottom) During construction of the northbound High Viaduct, the southbound High Viaduct was temporarily widened to accommodate both directions of traffic. Now that each direction of traffic is moving on its own viaduct, this widened section of the roadway is being removed, requiring overnight closures of northbound Highway 1 and Lincoln Boulevard. Later in the year, the girders that protected the Pet Cemetery during construction of the High Viaducts will be removed, and access to the Pet Cemetery will be restored. Crews will fill in the opening in the roof of the southbound Battery Tunnel, which was installed during Phase I to provide necessary ventilation for the tunnel. Now that each direction of traffic is being carried through its own set of tunnels and ventilation is provided by jet fans, the vent is no longer necessary. This work will require lane closures of Highway 101 and may require closures of Lincoln Boulevard above the tunnel. Work will soon occur to prepare to cover the Main Post and Battery Tunnels with lightweight fill and restore Halleck Street across the tunnel tops, which is expected next spring. REMOVAL OF TEMPORARY DETOUR The temporary detour that carried traffic during the three-year major construction in Phase II is being removed. Crews will crush the asphalt and haul it away for recycling. Please visit www.PresidioParkway.org for updates and sign-up to receive advisories! EAST END Sidewalk restoration work, including installation of barrier rail, will occur along Girard Road to provide bicyclists and pedestrians with a continuous bicycle lane and sidewalk connection between the Presidio and the Marina. Gorgas/Richardson Intersection Reconfiguration Future Crissy Marsh Expansion Crews are working to reconfigure the Gorgas Avenue/ Richardson Avenue intersection with relocated traffic signals and a new median island. To reduce potential cut-through traffic as per the approved environmental document, vehicle access from Gorgas Avenue to Lyon Street will be eliminated, and the connection to Lyon Street will become a pedestrian and bicycle corridor. In the coming year, crews will begin digging and grading under the low viaducts to accommodate the future expansion of Crissy Marsh and the connection to the Quartermaster Reach wetland restoration project.
