In 1804, Lewis and Clark explored
present day South Dakota’s
Missouri River.
In 1861, the Dakota Territory was
formed which included present day
South Dakota, North Dakota, and
parts of Wyoming and Montana.
In 1879, Laura Ingalls Wilder and her
family settled in De Smet.
South Dakota gained statehood on
November 2, 1889, and was the 40 th
state to join the Union.
In 1927, sculptor Gutzon Borglum
began work on Mount Rushmore
National Memorial. He intended to
carve the four presidents to their
waists but he died in 1941 before
the work was finished.
In 1948, the first blast took place on
the Crazy Horse mountain carving
in the Black Hills. The memorial is a
tribute to Native Americans.
South Dakota has 67 counties.
South Dakota is the 16th largest state
in size. South Dakota encompasses
77,123 square miles, averaging 10
people per square mile.
Oahe Dam, near Pierre, is the secondlargest rolled-earth dam in the world.
South Dakota has the highest point
in the United States east of the
Rocky Mountains (Harney Peak in
the Black Hills; elevation 7,242 feet)

Directions:
You need two players to play
the game. To start the game,
each player needs to place
their pheasants on the board
labeled “Your Field”. Refer to
the “PHEASANTS” key below,
which uses a specific number of
consecutive letters to identify
each group of pheasants on the
board. Place the pheasants either
horizontally or vertically. They must
not be placed diagonally or overlap.
After placing the pheasants on the
board, the players should take turns
calling out plot points (eg. D6).
If there is not a pheasant at that
location the other player will call

out “NO BIRD,” and the first player
will make a “/” in the cell to indicate
a miss. If there is a pheasant at the
coordinate, then the other player
calls out “ROOSTER”. Then an
“X” would be marked in that cell
to indicate the pheasant has been
flushed out of the field.
A player must report that their field
has been flushed after all of the
pheasants in a group have been
flushed.
The first player to flush all five groups
of pheasants out of the other player’s
field wins the game!
