Freedom Movement from the work of Bernie Kleina, Chicagobased fair housing activist and photographer
April 16-28
Atrium of the James Center
Forty years after the Chicago Freedom Movement energized
the civil rights demands of a nation, Wachovia & Housing
Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia, Inc. have partnered
to bring seminal images of those critical days to Richmond.
Bernie Kleina will present his photographs of days that
changed the history of a nation.
Visions of a Dream: The Chicago
Freedom Movement is a photo
exhibit that depicts the civil rights
struggle in the sixties as it focused on
the critical issue of housing in one of the
country ’s greatest cities. The exhibition
has been seen in venues from Chicago
to Seattle.
This exhibit should encourage us not
only to look back at where we have been, but to reflect on the
direction we are taking as a nation.
In Chicago from 1965 to 1966, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
and other civil rights leaders focused the Chicago Freedom
Movement on open housing. Thousands of people participated
in the marches and demonstrations. This was the first large
scale fair housing campaign in the country and the most
ambitious civil rights campaign in the North. It placed the
issue of equal opportunity in housing not just before people of
Chicago, but before the nation.
