Dr. L. Subramaniam New Year Concert with Symphony Orchestra of Castilla and Leon Valladolid January 9, 2016 “L. Subramaniam is the best this listener has heard…” - THE NEW YORK TIMES “The God of Indian Violin” - TIMES OF INDIA, Mumbai “I find nothing more inspiring than the music making of my very great colleague Subramaniam. Each time I listen to him, I am carried away in wonderment,” said Lord Yehudi Menuhin. Violinist/Composer, and creator of the Global Fusion concept, Dr. L. Subramaniam has performed/recorded Carnatic Classical Music, Western Classical Music, and also composed for and conducted major Orchestras, scored for films, collaborated with a wide range of some of the greatest musicians, from different genres of music including jazz, occidental, jugalbandis with North Indian musicians, world music and global fusion. He is a force that is strongly Indian, but universal in nature and approach. At a very young age, he was honoured with the title “Violin Chakravarthy” (emperor of the violin). Till date, Dr. Subramaniam has produced, performed, collaborated, conducted and close to two hundred recordings. To increase understanding of South Indian Classical Music, he has released a four-CD set, called “An Anthology of South Indian Music” and written an authoritative book “Euphony”, which was co-authored with his late wife Vijayashree Subramaniam. He is currently working the ‘Essential Raga Collection’, where he is expounding traditional ragas for an entire album. He is also the founder/director of the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts, a premier institute for musical education, and the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival, the biggest global music festival in India. Dr L. Subramaniam’s compositions presented in the New Year’s Concert, conducted by the acclaimed Director, Mr. Vicente Alberola, included ‘Turbulence’ and the world premiere of ‘Isabella Violin Concerto’, created especially for this celebration by Dr. L. Subramaniam, as well as a special Carnatic Music composition. The concert was received by a thunderous standing ovation. Print Media El Norte De Castilla Saturday, 2nd January, 2016 English translation Music critics Emiliano Allende th New Year's concert changed its traditional content for most original format to celebrate the 60 anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Spain. Therefore, the works that formed the program belonged to Spanish authors and the Indian violinist Subramaniam, who also composed a piece for the occasion. If the concert had been a confrontation between the two countries, it would have been the clear winner India. Subramaniam's work is founded on the basics of Carnatic, South own music in his country. In Elle, as we saw yesterday, he presented 'raga' as melodic element in the form of scale through each item on a shaft powered by a continuous bass and enriched by the variety percussion rhythm. The exactitude and sharpness of his sound is so characteristic timbre, his virtuosity, but especially its conjunction with the rest of the group in the passages of maximum stress emotive left the brightest moments of the concert. His western training also allowed him to show some examples. De 'Sinfonia Turbulence', unlike its name, it was quite friendly as his Violin Concerto absolute premiere, 'Isabella', which begins with the sequence of traditional chords of flamenco, to continue the channels for three solos, seeded, motifs of a beautiful naivete, they sounded warm in flute and oboe. Vicente Alberola directed the orchestra with proper restraint, following the impulses of Subramaniam. In part, however, their versions of 'La vida breve' de Falla, the 'intermediate Goyescas' by Granados and the 'Sinfonia sevillana' Turina lacked the essential impulse, that that is not on the scores. The Symphony Orchestra of Castilla and Leon premiere concert Subramaniam who is also the soloist of the evening. The violinist has composed the 'Concert Isabella' 'to wish peace and harmony in the beginning of this new and Remembrance 2016 between the two countries. " Subramaniam is the son of Professor V. Lakshminarayana belonging to a lineage dedicated to Carnatic music in South India interpreters. Like his ancestors was doomed to play the violin accompaniment, almost perpendicular to your body and slightly tilted toward the ground. A very different approach to the Western violin, built in very different music to that afforded him the Western tradition. Subramaniam came to study in California and from 1973 to Indian classical roots and learned in the Western symphony, were adding the dialogues that his violin set with pop, rock, jazz or folklore of the world, from Norway to Japan, from Iceland to South Africa. Not surprisingly, he ended up coining the term 'global meltdown' and in his discography duets with colleagues as diverse as Yehudi Menuhin, Stephane Grappelli, Stevie Wonder, Jean- Pierra Rampal, Steven Seagal, George Harrison and Ravi Coltrane occur. All this became the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival (LGMF) which has just returned. "We have traveled a lot," he says before talking about the concert composed for Valladolid. Symphonic composer "It is a letter written to celebrate the union of Spain and India, Gypsies reasons, because they left my country to Europe with Indian parties and Flemish parties work. There are three distinct but interrelated segments, "he explains who is considered a more Indian" global composer. "Within the Indian side, it highlights "improvisation. There are a number of cadenzas for the soloist, in this case, which are left to chance. Those who are dedicated to Carnatic music we are used to it, I like. " After the premiere at the Miguel Delibes, the Indian ambassador, the House of India and the OSCyL makers are considering a next concert in the Indian subcontinent. "We are planning that the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla and Leon come to LGMF next December has brand new work there." L. Subramaniam (Chennai, 1947) is the 'emperor of the violin', a renowned interpreter rewarded everywhere inside and outside their country. But I also wanted to move from improvisation to composition. In fact Carnatic music is written, fixed on paper Western style. "There are a number of elements that I mix, I use interchangeably. In the Indian tradition manage raga, that is the scale and pace, the logging. There are some reasons that developed various instruments, like the European melodies. " Know the rules of both worlds, rationally managed, but "when one seeks his voice, his tone, just leaving its roots." This union has led him to composing for orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin State Opera and the Swiss Romande Orchestra, also for fellow Zubin Mehta and the cinema. They take his music films like Salaam Bombay 'and' Mississippi Masala ', as composer, and' Little Buddha 'by Bertolucci, as interpreter. It has also made forays into the theater world as an advisor to Peter Brook in the dramatized version of 'Mahabharata'. This musician in the world still hugging his violin every day, "is that I do not like TV, just playing for you, for pleasure," feels part of the change that propelled his father's violin destination in India. "Traditionally it was an instrument of melodic accompaniment. Gradually he was gaining prominence and achieved a status as similar to the Western violin, both symphonic and chamber music »solo. Recordings In part due to different technique introduced by his father. Despite the names, "we do not have an Indian symphony orchestra. I think in a few years it will be possible, now we have several foreign musicians playing there for one season and the next are others. " Unlike its continental neighbors, China and South Korea, India has not replicated the European symphonic system and its network of conservatories, yet. With more than fifty recordings in his career, Subramaniam hopes to have time to record sometime this release and other scores that have not been brought to the studio.
