General Manager Report
A long winter and a late spring
sure makes it hard to believe that
its rodeo season but we’ve started.
Last year I mentioned that the
CCA is a contestant organization,
formed by contestants for the
benefits of contestants. The CCA
has very important stakeholders,
committees and contractors, that
without them there are no rodeos.
The challenges, as the economy
and demographics change, are to
keep the whole system sustainable.
But at the end of the day its a
member owned association and
the operation has to be self
funded for the most part.. So
creative ideas to keep revenues
flowing to meet ever increasing
operating costs for stakeholders is
going to be necessary,
The CCA and Rodeo in general is
facing many challenges, there has
never been a more important time
for the members to be involved in
the future.
On the good side rodeo is gaining
in popularity as its very affordable
and exciting entrainment and I
believe people want to see a
traditional and historic skill
performed at a high level.
Change will help keep it going and
as I learned about the 50 years of
the CCA, change is what got the
CCA to this point.
Good luck and prayer for safety of
all contestants in 2014.
Mark Bencze
General Manager
Wildhorse Productions
is pleased to announce we
have 9 full rodeos scheduled for 2014. Our rodeos are
sanctioned with the Canadian Cowboys Association
(CCA) and the Association des Cowboys de l’est du
Canada (ACEC).
As a direct result of this sanctioning, Cowboys and
Cowgirls rodeoing in Eastern Canada will have the
opportunity:
•To Compete for a minimum of $1000.00 per
major event at approx. 20 rodeos
•To Qualify for Four Separate Finals -The CCA
Finals in Regina, The ACEC Finals in Quebec, The
Ram Finals in Newmarket and the Smoke N Spurs
Festival (Wildhorse Series Showdown) in
Powassan.
Please support those who support your sport! Our
sponsors work with us all year long, enabling Wildhorse
Productions to offer the highest rodeo payouts possible.

Rodeo Ramblin’
2014 RODEO SCHEDULE
-Associations-
The 2014 Canadian Cowboys Association Rodeo
Convention was March 7-8 and I had the Tisdale Rambler Rodeo
opportunity to attend the closing portion of the Pierson Indoor Rodeo dual MRCA & RRA
AGM and the banquet. The convention was a great North Battleford Kinsmen Indoor Rodeo
place to revisit old friendships, hear some new “old Big Valley Rodeo CRA Lead
rodeo stories” and exchange ideas with volunteers Country 95.9 Rock N Rodeo dual ACEC
from rodeo committees.
Dean Anthony Memorial Rodeo dual CRA & MRCA
Discussion, between the Board of Directors and
Kinderseley Indoor Rodeo dual CRA
the MRCA Committee Reps, heated up around the
issue of dual approvals. Passion, on the part of the Unity Western Days dual CRA
attendees was apparent and the enthusiasm was Cadogan Stampede
positive. Anyone involved with rodeo wants to see Warman Diamond Rodeo
the sport succeed. Committee volunteers continue Woodstock Ram Rodeo
to amaze me with their dedication to promoting the Eston Rodeo dual CRA
sport and the work that they put into organizing Sandhill Rodeo dual CRA
events in their community.
Pilot Butte Community Rodeo
Contestants need to realize the work these Long Creek Rodeo
volunteers do to put on successful performances. Belleville Ram Rodeo
Jay Fitzpatrick said it best “Every rodeo contestant Foremost Rodeo dual CRA
should have to serve on their local rodeo Coutts Rodeo dual CRA
committee, helping gather up sponsors. Just to see Central Butte Rodeo dual CRA
what all goes into putting on a rodeo.”
Milverton Ram Rodeo
The meetings after the meeting are always
Chatham Case IH Ultimate Rodeo (Special Event)
interesting. Small group discussions are more apt to
get people to open up and share their thoughts. One Frontier Days Rodeo dual CRA
topic was the work done to gather sponsors and Onion Lake Rodeo
then the event has minimal entries. Committees pay Manitoulin Rodeo dual ACEC
extra money to dual approve in the hopes of Arrowwood Ag Society Rodeo
increasing entries. Committees dual approve with Moosomin Rodeo dual MRCA
three associations, at times to no avail. A committee Carlton Trail Rodeo dual MRCA
rep commented on the hours spent gathering Mapleton Rodeo dual ACEC
sponsorship and one guy enters. He went on to say Wood Mountain Stampede
“I should have just wrote him a cheque upfront and Selkirk Triple S Fair & Rodeo MRCA Lead
sent him on his way. All he did was dee up to get to Orangeville Ram Rodeo
the whistle.” His comment made me pose the Gilbert Plains Rodeo dual MRCA
question “Why don’t associations guarantee a Boomtown Days Stampede dual CRA
minimum number of contestants per performance
per event or the committee have the option to Kitchener Case IH Ultimate
cancel said event?” My next comment, “part of the Weyburn Ag Society Rodeo dual MRCA
problem is we have too many rodeo associations.” Massey Rodeo dual ACEC

of entries.
Here are some guidelines that MUST be
followed when submitting entries:
1. Local contestants MUST call the local entry
number to enter. Any carded member
wishing to enter with a local MUST enter all
their events for that rodeo through the local
entry line. Please refer to the entry
information for local entry numbers.
2. Roughstock contestants are NOT
ALLOWED to pick SLACK as a preference.
3. Contestants must give TWO DIFFERENT
preferences or an OUT. Cannot pick two
preferences that are the same.
4. Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to ask for
different preferences for different events.
5. Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to enter
one rodeo with one group and another
rodeo with a different group.
6. ALL contestants in a buddy group MUST ask
for the SAME PREFERENCES. Up to four
contestants and four junior tags are allowed
to buddy together. Team Roping partners
are only considered part of the buddy group
if they are entering another event in
addition to Team Roping.
7. Only the person who made the entry is
allowed to make changes to that group’s
entry. If you want to be added to a group,
then you must have the person who made
the entry call in and add you.
8. DO NOT submit multiple or duplicate
entries. Decide who is going to make the
entry for the group and have only one
person submit the entry using only one of
the methods available. Multiple entries for
the same person or group is not an efficient
process for the office and takes valuable
time away from staff answering the entry
line.
9. ALL FINES MUST BE CLEARED PRIOR
TO ENTRY DAY. This includes fines owed
to CCA and any other associations. Anyone
paying CCA fines on entry day will be
charged an additional $50 administration
fee.
Callback Policy

NOTE: An “error” refers to being missed

DO NOT call the office if you did not get

reason. According to . ENTRY STATISTICS,

their 2nd preference, and only 4% did not get
either of their preferences.

rules
Notice to all Contestants:
Starting July 1, 2011 an existing entry policy
will be enforced with respect to the second
preference when entering a rodeo. A valid
second preference will be one that is different
from the first preference given. If a contestant
does not give a different second preference,
the entry will not be taken. No exceptions will
be made to this policy after July 1, 2011. To
help enforce this policy, the executive has
approved adding the “draw out” option to the
range of valid options for entry.
In the event that a contestant can only make
one performance at a rodeo, they will be
allowed to draw out of that rodeo starting July
1, 2011. If a contestant enters a rodeo with
the second option as “out” there will be no
second chance if they are drawn out by the
entry system. As an example, if a contestant
enters a rodeo as “Slack or out” they are
stating that if they don’t get slack at that
rodeo, they will not enter that rodeo at all. If a
contestant enters using the “draw out” option
this way, they will not be given any special
preference in the system and may not get
entered at that rodeo. The cost of using this
draw out option will be a $25.00 admin fee
payable prior to your next entry. For further
information, please contact the CCA office.
Direct Deposit Information:
The CCA Office has switched to Direct
Deposit rather than cheques for the Rodeo
Payout. We need to collect banking
information from all of our members. We will
require all competing members to send us a
VOID Cheque. They can do this 2 ways….by
mail or by giving a VOID cheque to the Rodeo
Secretary at a Rodeo when they pay their entry
fees. The secretaries will have a spreadsheet
that they will fill out once the member gives
the secretary the VOID cheque to hand in to
the Office. The Office will keep this VOID
cheque on file and directly deposit winnings
from every rodeo.
Conduct on the phone
A reminder that rude behavior, harassment,
or foul language towards CCA staff will be
documented, and result in a $100 fine. This
fine will be levied by the CCA office, and the
member will have 30 days to pay the fine
before they become ineligible to enter as per
the CCA Rulebook Section XIII A. 14

Bob was born on July 20, 1949 at
Weyburn, SK and grew up at Yellow Grass.
When he was 18 he went to work for the
PF pastures. Bob became a CCA member
in the late 60’s and his events he competed
in were Calf roping, Bareback, Cow riding
and Bull riding. Later Bob became a
member of the CPRA.
Bob lives in Bassano, Alberta and works
on a ranch. He has 2 daughters.
Muriel was born June 30, 1937 into a
rodeo family, helping her dad Roy West in
the late 60’s and 70’s. She never competed
in rodeos but was active in bookkeeping
and sponsorships.
In 1971 Muriel married Carl and he
became a new dad to her daughters Lori
and Kim.
Muriel travelled with Carl as he
competed in rodeos and in 1991 they
formed Prairie Rodeo after subcontracting
for 2 years prior. Muriel is the secretary/
bookkeeper for their rodeo. One year in
the mid 90’s they had 25 CCA rodeos.
That would have been a very busy season.
Muriel travelled to Thunder Bay, Ontario
to work a rodeo and handled it on her
own.
The past 22 years Muriel has held a Bull
Riding competition in Moose Jaw and
does the sponsorship for that event. She is
still very active in the rodeos.
Muriel’s 2 daughters are married and she
has 2 grandsons Keith and Austin.
Elda Turcato was born August 21, 1939
and grew up on the family farm near
Taber, Alberta. She met a handsome
young steer wrestler and soon married
Stanley Weatherly in 1963. Elda and Stan
built their family as well as their herd of
bucking stock and formed Big Country
Rodeo in 1971. She was the secretary,
timer, chief cook and nursemaid to the
entire crew, while also working fulltime as
a Registered nurse and later as a Hospital
Unit clerk.
Elda has a beautiful collection of stock
awards gracing the walls of her home, a
tribute to their concentrated breeding
program of four legged superstars. She is
an accomplished and trusted CCA
secretary and oversees all aspects of Big
Country Rodeo, a job she has held for
over 40 years.
Elda has 3 children and loves every
minute she spends with her 4
granddaughters.

CCA RODEO NEWS APRIL 2014-PAGE 13
We missed Jim Reinbold’s name on
his photo last issue so to give Jim
credit where credit is due we are
writing about one of the great CCA
Gold Card members.
Jim Reinbold was the CCA Saddle
Bronc Campion in 1966 and 1967. He
was the runner up in the high point in
1966 and the runner up in bull riding
in 1967.
He served as Vice-President and
Bronc Riding director for the CCA,

The CCA wants to recognize
Randy Lewis of Lewisimages.
Randy joined up with the CCA in
the fall of 2011 and has been an
outstanding
photographer,
contributor and volunteer.
Randy had be-friended many
contestants and helps many with
their marketing profiles and
follows their careers.
Randy contribution to the CCA
is
very
considerable
and
significant. He provides photos
for the newspaper the website and
2013 Best Ground Award
The 2013 Ladies Barrel Racing finalists
voted for the rodeo with the Best Ground for
the 2013 season ...... The winner was Unity
Rodeo!!! We had a banner made up that Unity
Rodeo Committee will have to hang in their
arena for "bragging rights".
We want to raise awareness and give
recognition to those rodeos that make an extra
effort to have good , safe ground for the barrel
racing event which also gives good
competition ground for the rest of the rodeo
events as well.
Good ground increases entries and high
quality performances year after year Thank you
to Unity Rodeo and all the committees that
make the effort for safe ground.
LBR Director, Dawn Goebel
Thank you for the 50th Anniversary Gala Celebration in
Regina, during the Finals, held for the alumni and the
contestants. It was very well organized, awesome banquet, so
good to see some of the former competitors in my era, also
to meet some of the present champions. Lots of
reminiscing, nice to have the Finals televised into the banquet
room. We were treated royally.
Jim on Jerry Myer’s Miller Special
at Elkwater AB
any a marketing material we need.
He attends conventions and
awards banquets to do the photo
shoots and sets up projectors and
screens and helps with preparing
power point presentations.
Randy also helps with setting up
the booth and tearing it down at
the Finals. In these busy times
when volunteers are hard to find
there isn’t anything that Randy
won’t help with when we ask him
Thank you Randy.

1.Calves must be uniform.
2.Animals used for this event
should be inspected by the
judges prior to the rodeo and
any objectionable stock shall be
eliminated.
3.If horned, not to exceed a
maximum span of 14 ½ in.
4.The breakaway calves shall be
a.Minimum weight of 180
pounds.
b.Maximum weight of 350
pounds.
Part B Equipment
1.Cattle neck ropes on calves
must be tied with string.
2.A mechanical barrier must be
used. The barrier shall be set in
accordance with the tie down
rules of the CCA.
Part C General Rules
1.There will be a thirty (30)
second time limit for the
contestant to call for the calf.
The judge will determine if
additional time may be allotted.
2.The score line will be set in
accordance with the CCA tie
down rules.
3.If the automatic barrier fails to
work the stock is brought back,
contestant must take the same
animal at a time the producer
indicates but prior to the calf
being used again.
4.If the barrier equipment hangs
on an animal and the contestant
tries the animal, he accepts the
animal. If the contestant pulls
up he will receive the same
animal back if the judge calls a
foul due to the barrier or other
circumstances.
5.Should the barrier break at any
point other than the designated
breaking point, the decision is
up to the barrier judge to call a
rerun.
If the contestant
obviously beats the barrier, but
the staples are pulled or the
barrier rope is broken and
string is unbroken, the barrier
judge may assess a ten (10)
second penalty. Otherwise this
will not be considered a broken
barrier.
6.The calf belongs to the
contestant when he calls for it,
regardless of what happens,
except for the following
circumstances:
a.In any timed event, if an
animal escapes from the
arena, the field judge will
drop the flag and all
watches will be stopped.
Contestant will receive the
original animal back with a
lap and tap start. Time
already accumulated will be
added to the time used to
complete the qualifying
run.
b.In cases of mechanical
failure
c.If in the opinion of the line
judge the contestant is
fouled by the barrier, the
contestant shall get his calf
back,
providing
the
contestant declares himself
by pulling up.
d.Lap and Tap - If the barrier
judge is to flag the start, he
shall flag the animal when
the animal’s nose crosses
the starting line. If not the
barrier may be used to
recognize the start of the
calf.
7.A contestant must be on her
horse and her horse must break
the plane of the barrier with
her draw breaking the plane of
the scoreline before she is
allowed to compete.
8.Time is to be taken between two
flags.
9.It shall be the judge’s
responsibility to see that the
contestant competes on the
stock drawn for her. In the
event of a mistake, the correct
drawn stock must be returned
if necessary and run during that
performance and only that time
or score taken.
Part D Event Rules
1.This event is for ladies only
except that boys 15 or younger
as of January 1 for that season.
2.Membership requirements shall
meet the same membership
requirements as a standard
event in the CCA Rulebook.
Juniors must meet the
membership requirements as
required in the CCA Rulebook.
Please refer to the Ontario
CCA ground rules for the series
finals requirements.
3.This event shall be conducted
with an open gate.
4.The rope shall be tied on to the
saddle horn with “mason”
string. The rope shall have a
knot at the end of the rope with
the string tied at the knot.
There shall be no tail. A white
flag shall be visible to the
flagman or judge and must be
attached at the knot end of the
rope.
5.The rope shall not run through
the bridle, tie down, neck rope
or any other device.
6.The loop shall go over the head
of the calf to be considered a
legal catch.
7.The rope must be released from
the contestant’s hand to be a
legal catch. The contestant
shall not pull the rope so as to
break the connection to the
saddlehorn.
8.The loop shall be thrown prior
to entering the alley and the
horse shall not enter the alley
during the run to be considered
a legal catch.
Part E Scoring and Penalties
1.In order for the time to be
considered official, the barrier
flag must operate.
2.The timed event judge will not
flag contestant out until time is
recorded.
3.The judge is to flag a time, then
flag the contestant out if the
run is not legal.
4.There will be a ten second
penalty assessed for breaking
the barrier.
5.Roping the calf without
releasing the loop from your
hand will disqualify the catch.
6.Contestant will be disqualified
for any abusive treatment of
the calf or the horse.
7.The contestant will receive no
time should the rope break
away from the saddle horn by
hand. However, if the rope
should dally around the horn
the contestant may ride
forward, undally the rope and
then stop the horse to make the
rope break away.
Part F Reruns
1. In any timed event, if an animal
escapes from the arena, flag will
be dropped and watches
stopped. Contestant will get
animal back with lap and tap
start, and time already spent
will be added to time used in
qualifying plus barrier penalties,
if any.
2. During any performance if an
animal escapes the chutes or
pens before it is called for
by the contestant, or if an
automatic barrier fails to work
and the stock is brought
back, that animal will be
returned by the arena director
and the labour crew during or
at the end of that performance
in the same manner he was
originally worked or
brought to the pens for
contesting. At least several head
of animals will be brought
back together.
3. No rerun will be given due to
faulty or broken equipment
furnished by the contestant
4. If the judge sees he has made
an error in flagging, he must
declare a rerun before the
contestant leaves the arena.
5. A calf must be rerun before it
is used by another contestant.
6. In the breakaway roping if an
animal fails to break the neck
rope and time is officially
started by the contestant, that
animal belongs to the
contestant. However, if time is
started by the animal and the
breakaway roper remains
behind the plain of the barrier
for approximately 10 seconds
that animal should be
considered a sulking animal and
replaced using the misdraw
procedure.
Part G Payout
1.The prize money and entry fees
are added together for the
purse in that event for the
event.
2.The
placing
payoff
