Outlook
With a new “We are Bosch” mission statement, Bosch created a framework for the future strategic orientation of the Bosch Group
and its business sectors. First and foremost,
Bosch aims to ensure the company’s strong
and meaningful growth with a goal of developing products that are “Invented for life,”
that fascinate, that improve quality of life, and
that help conserve natural resources.
The strategy is based on three focal points:
focusing on customers, shaping change and
striving for excellence. These focal points are
derived from factors such as megatrends,
changes in the competitive environment,

innovations, customer expectations, resource
scarcity and political developments.
In terms of business sectors, Bosch plans
to strike a better balance between Mobility
Solutions and the other business sectors. The
purchase of all shares of the former joint venture that is now the Home Appliances division
represents a major step in this direction.
In North America, Bosch’s intention is to
grow profitably, doubling sales in the region
compared with 2013 by the end of the decade. The strategy centers on four pillars:
Innovation, Cross-Selling, Acquisition and
Organic Growth. Innovation efforts focus on
identifying customer problems worth solving
and converting those ideas into commercial
opportunities within a safe environment. As
described earlier, Cross-Selling involves offering complete solutions, featuring multiple
Bosch products, to customers in the vertical
markets of manufacturing, residential and
mining. Acquisitions will continue to be an
avenue of growth as Bosch capitalizes on
existing strengths and further enhances its
diverse portfolio. Finally, Bosch sees strong
opportunities for Organic Growth as the
company deepens relationships with existing
customers and demonstrates the value of its
products and services to new customers.

Research and Development
Since 1999, the Bosch Research and Technology Center North
America has focused on various research topics, including
application-specific integrated circuits design and micro-electro-mechanical systems technology; energy-conversion and
energy-storage technologies, modeling, simulation and controls; wireless and Internet technologies; algorithms for robotics, autonomous systems, including automated driving; data
mining; and user-interaction technologies. Research in these
areas is undertaken by Bosch researchers in Palo Alto, California, and Pittsburgh, in close collaboration with partners at
leading U.S. universities, industry partners and other Bosch
businesses throughout the world.
Bosch Energy Research Network (BERN) is the North America InterCampus Program, supporting university outreach
through faculty research grants and student internships at
target university campuses.
31
Innovation is a part of Bosch’s DNA. Worldwide in 2014, the company invested $6.6 billion in R&D, with a focus on the development
of solutions for the Internet of Things. In 2014, Bosch globally
applied for nearly 4,600 patents – an average of 18 patents per
working day. More than 2,000 Bosch associates are dedicated to
R&D in North America.
In 2014, BERN completed the third year of an eight-year program. During the initial three years, the program granted 45
internships from 2,858 applications thanks to partnerships
with about 10 target universities, including top research universities in the U.S. The internship program has been a successful effort, resulting in approximately 50 percent of former
interns having an extended relationship with the company and
joining as associates.
The BERN program also sponsors faculty research on a competitive, two-stage selection process. To date, two, two-year
grant cycles have been completed, with a third round of applications in process. In the previous competitions, 187 distinct
proposals were received with 14 grants awarded. More than
60 project-related scholarly articles explicitly credit Bosch
for funding.
32

Corporate Citizenship
The Bosch Community Fund (BCF), a U.S.-based foundation
established in September 2011, awards up to $3 million annually in grants to 501(c)(3) organizations and educational institutions. The BCF focuses primarily on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and the advancement
of environmental sustainability initiatives.
In 2014, the BCF awarded grant investments to support STEM
and eco+STEM programs in 17 U.S. Bosch site communities ‒
nearly $1.5 million of a total $2.8 million in grant funding. In
Anderson, South Carolina, $100,000 of more than $240,000
in grants was awarded to Tri-County Technical College (TCTC)
to support STEM programs. The TCTC Foundation named
Bosch’s Anderson facility 2014 Philanthropist of the Year.
In addition to the Bosch Community Fund, Bosch announced
it would donate $1,000 to the charity of choice of Bosch
33
Being engaged and supportive of local communities is a long-standing Bosch value. The company sponsors 18 FIRST® Robotics teams
in the U.S., providing financial support and 65 associate mentors
to more than 700 students from California, Michigan, Minnesota,
South Carolina and Wisconsin.
Automotive Aftermarket-sponsored teams from Hendrick Motorsports, Team Penske and Joe Gibbs Racing each time they
win during the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. With 37 total
races in the 2015 season, there is potential for Bosch to donate $37,000 this year.
Bosch strives to reduce its environmental impact, actively improve environmental conditions and have associates act responsibly when it comes to the environment. Aligning with the
Bosch Values, the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWLF) program at
Bosch’s North American sites includes recycling but goes a step
further, taking a complete system approach to waste materials
generated. The goal of ZWLF is to minimize waste, maximize recycling, reduce consumption and divert waste materials from
the landfill. Six Bosch North America locations have achieved
this goal.
