At the end of the 1976 season the club changed its name to the Knox Eagles and continued to play in the KJFA. The KJFA merged with the Eastern Football League in 1998 and the Eagles have participated in the EFL from then to the current day. In the 2006 season the Knox Eagles merged with Ferntree Gully to form the Ferntree Gully Eagles. The club fields teams from Under 9s through to Under 16s. Club colours: Blue and white vertical stripes, with an eagle emblem, with royal blue shorts. Grounds: The club plays matches at Ferntree Gully Reserve, Glenfern Road, Ferntree Gully. The Eagles also train at Picketts Reserve, Burwood Highway, with another training venue at Windermere Reserve. The early years 1972 – 1983 In 1971 the club was known as the Knox Opportunity Youth Club (K.O.Y.C.) and played all over Melbourne in the United Churches Association. The clubrooms were located in Mossfield Avenue and the oval at the back of them, bordered by Ferntree Gully Road, Commercial Roads, this is the same oval the club use today. 1972 Saw the formation of the Knox Junior Football Association (K.J.F.A.) fielding six teams. Alf Stevens as President of the club and the Committee decided to enter three teams in the K.J.F.A. competition, they were the Stars and Colts (both Under 13 sides) and one Under 10 side. Mr McIver coached the Colts to become Grand Final winners against St Pauls. 1973 The club changed its name to K.O.Y.C. Eagles, fielding three sides, Under 14, Under 12 and Under 10. Of these, two victorious sides emerged, winning the Under 12 and Under 14 premierships. 1974 Alf Stevens retired and a new committee was formed from outside the youth club. R. Neal was elected President. The Under 14 side winning the premiership. 1975 Saw a strong committee and parent support was great, although premierships eluded the club and the boys had a good year, finishing off with a trip away. It was also this year that the cricket club and Eagles Football Club in a joint venture agree to finance, in part the building of the new clubrooms on Picketts Reserve, which it is hoped would be ready for the 1976 season. The cost would be approximately $37,000. 1976 A new age group was introduced – the Under 10B, giving the club 4 teams. The K.J.F.A. now having 51 teams in the association. The cricket and football clubs signed the agreement for the clubrooms. The club changed its name to Knox Eagles Junior Football Club. 3 November 12, 2011 History of the Ferntree Gully Eagles JFC 1977 Saw the 12B team fielded for the first time, which gave the club five sides. Finally, the clubs moved into the new clubrooms. The Don Morris Memorial Trophy was put in the clubrooms. 1978 Gave the club another team – Under 13s – this side created something of a record, in that they had 4 coaches in one season. St. Johns Ambulance were officially with the club on home games. The biggest winning margin ever seen in the club, - final scores being 46-22-298 to Knoxfield 0-0-0. For the second time in as many weeks, Eagles Under 14 dominated the association’s scoring with Eagles 44-27-291 to Chandler Park 0-0-0. The 10B side also had a great win this year on a tiring day for both sides, with the end result being 0-1-1 to Bluebirds 0-0-0. The club had five teams in the finals this year, only have four knocked out in the prelims. It was the Under 14s who won the flag against the Panthers in a hard fought game – final scores Eagles 10-5-65 to Panthers 9-7-61. 1979 This season saw an approximate expense of $6,500 to run the club, as at this time it was fielding six sides (164 boys). The committee were discussing forming a Knox Eagles Youth Club, Ex-Eagles players took the initiative and formed a basketball team called the Knox Eagles. A snowball drive was run, and the boys did well, selling 800 dozen. 1980 This season saw thirty 50th and two 100th game recipients. Ground lighting for training was discussed. The coaches also suggested forming a football clinic. 1981 The club again discussed training lights, but the ground committee said the cost was too high. The junior discos started and became a regular attraction to the kids in the area. David Croce initiated an interstate trip to South Australia. We now see interstate trips a regular feature in the club. 1982 We saw two interstate games this season – South Australia traveling to Picketts Reserve, to play for the Croce, Christensen Perpetual Trophy, and the Under 15 boys went to Canberra to play Ainslie. Back to Eagles day. The current mini lotto was run – from the start it was a huge success. This form of fund-raising has proven to be beneficial to the club. The club discussed becoming a corporate body. The committee agreed that a Coach Co-ordinator be employed. $3,000 worth of ground lighting was installed solely by the club. 1983 The Knox Eagles Sporting Club was formed. The committee of cricket and football club put forward proposals for extensions to the clubrooms. Council advised the clubs that the cost of $69,000 would have to be paid jointly by both clubs for the extension to be approved. A coaching co-ordinator was appointed – this proved to be very successful. 4 November 12, 2011 History of the Ferntree Gully Eagles JFC 2008- Present 2008 - New website established: www.ferntreegullyeagles.com.au It becomes the main form of communication between the Club and all members; all formal documents are loaded and accessible; new policies developed and posted and a new weekly electronic newsletter is distributed. This accreditation is awarded to clubs who can demonstrate they manage football club environments that are conducive to fun, safe, fair and importantly, inclusive. AFL Victoria Community Football Development Manager Peter McDougall said it was imperative that a club could demonstrate that it assisted club members outside of the normal football expectation. “Congratulations to the committee and players of the Ferntree Gully Eagles Junior Football Club for setting a benchmark for other football clubs,” McDougall said. “Obtaining the gold level accreditation after successfully securing bronze and silver levels, demonstrates that the club is fully committed to providing the community a safe haven to enjoy their footy.” The accreditation is a terrific endorsement for the work carried out by the committee, and the first club to receive this level of accreditation in the Eastern Football League (EFL). The AFL Quality Club Program was introduced in 2005 by AFL Victoria and has now been adopted by the AFL to be a national program. 8 November 12, 2011 History of the Ferntree Gully Eagles JFC Club of the Year award Knox Eagles has twice won the Gordon Parker Best Conducted Junior Club Award in the KJFA competition.
