National Aviation Day Celebrates the Wright Brothers on August 19th
In 1939 President Franklin Roosevelt
proclaimed August 19 to be National Aviation
Day. The day coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright, who piloted the Wright Flyer. He and
his brother Wilbur are given credit for building the
world’s first successful airplane with aircraft controls that enabled them to steer the plane. Orville
Wright made the first flight for 12 seconds and 120
feet near Kitty Hawk, NC on December 17, 1903.
Here are 5 facts about the Wright brothers:
1. The brothers grew up in a small wooden
house on a side street in Dayton, OH where they
had no electricity, running water, indoor plumbing
or telephone. But they had something many houses
didn’t have: books. And they had parents who
encouraged a curiosity about everything. In effect,
they were “home schooled” during a time when
such an expression didn’t exist.
2. A pond hockey injury helped forever change
human history. Near the end of his time in high
school, Wilbur was hit in the teeth by a hockey
stick and it not only knocked out his upper teeth, it
so damaged him in other ways that he retreated
into the privacy of the home. He became a recluse
for almost three years. It was during this time that
he really dove into reading about the people that
would fuel his ambition in aviation.
3. Wilbur and Orville were budget conscious
and self-sufficient. They spent about $1000 in to-
tal on their project. They
built everything themselves and they were
very cautious about never overspending
because the only money
they invested in the
project was their own.
They didn’t want outside
investors.
4. Nobody in America seemed to care, but the
French took notice. The brothers flew the first
flight in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, NC. But the country,
from Washington D.C. to the newspaper reporters
in their own hometown refused to believe that they
had flown. The French were the only ones who
took notice. A delegation of French military officers came all the way across the Atlantic to Dayton
and the first flight ever publicly flown was on
8/8/08 at La Mans France. It was only then that the
Wright Brothers became famous around the world.
5. They were forever sons of Ohio. They were the
definition of ‘hometown boys’. When Wilbur was
asked what advice he had to give to succeed in life,
he said: “Pick a good mother and father and grow
up in Ohio.” They were raised not to let success or
any other stroke of good luck go to their heads.
Modesty was one of their prime virtues.

Resident Spotlight: Jean Christenson
After traveling all over the world, its amazing
that Jean Christenson has such a strong sense of
‘home’. “When my youngest child turned five and
went off to kindergarten during the day, I started
working at TWA,” Jean remembers. She started as a
file clerk in Kansas City in 1959. However, she had
gone to business school in Los Angeles and learned
to operate a comptometer there so she was a shoe-in
for a career in the Accounting Department where
she worked until she retired in 1983. During those
years at TWA, the world was her oyster.
“We could go first class with TWA anywhere for
around $50,” Jean points out. “And that was when
they had a real menu and the food was delicious,
much more than just a sack of peanuts.” Switzerland
was one of her favorite places to visit because it was
so clean and she was also very impressed with the
people. “We went on a cog train up the side of a
mountain and looking out the window I watched
people walking up the steep hill right next to the
train like it was nothing.” Her inspiring travel also
took her to Greece, Portugal, Seattle, San Francisco
and many places in between.
Regardless of where she was travelling back
from, she always came back to Kansas City to her
beloved husband, Larry (married 70 years) and their
three children. “We lived in the same house in
Kansas City for fifty-five years,” she recalls. “It was
a great two bedroom, one bathroom house when we
moved in but by the time our third child came

around we needed a bit more space. We looked
everywhere but ended up just making the garage
into a family room and adding on another bedroom
and bathroom and double garage.” Wherever Jean
resides, she gets creative to make it home.
In late 2014, Jean moved into her Country Club
Cottage. “Since the first day I got here, I have
never felt like a stranger,” she notes. “I’d go to the
Dining Room and people would stand up and
introduce themselves and that just meant the world
to me.” And she has customized her back patio
into a shaded garden oasis and decorating her
living room and bedrooms with her handmade
crafts and memories. “I like for this to be a place
where people can feel at home. I want them to
come in and feel relaxed.” And we all do, indeed.
Attention Knitters and Crocheters!
Cottage resident Virginia Reedy is heading up
our new Prayer Shawl Program. “My hope is to
get a list of people in our lives who are in need
of prayer, pray for them and make them a shawl
as a tangible reminder that they are being prayed
for,” Virginia shares.
This is such a wonderful opportunity to bless
all kinds of people. Virginia and the gals will be
working on the project each Thursday at
1:30 pm in the EC in an activity called “Knit
Together.” All knitters and crocheters are
welcome to come! Call Andrew or Radonna if
you have any questions.

Healthy Aging: Tips For Taking Medications Safely that it might be doing more harm than good.
For some, taking medications is an important
part of the daily routine. Although doctors write the
prescriptions, it is up to us to make sure we take
them correctly. Here are some tips to help you take
your medicines safely:
Follow instructions. Read all medicine labels. Make sure to take your medicines the right
way. For example, don’t use an over-the-counter
cough and cold syrup if you only have a runny nose
and no cough.
Use the right amount. Don’t take a larger
dose of a medicine thinking it will help you more.
It can be very dangerous, even deadly. And, don’t
skip or take half doses of a prescription drug to
save money. (Talk with your doctor or pharmacist
if you can’t afford the medicine. There may be
help.)
Take medicine on time. Some people use
meals or bedtime as reminders to take their
medicine. Other people use charts, calendars, or
weekly pill boxes.
Turn on a light. Don’t take medicine in the
dark; otherwise, you might make a mistake.
Report problems. Call your doctor right
away if you have any trouble with your prescription
or over-the-counter medicine, or if you are worried
Joker’s Corner: ‘Back to School’
There may be something else you can take.
In addition, if you open up a new prescription and
the pill is different in appearance than you expected
(color or shape), don’t hesitate to call your doctor
(or pharmacist) to double check.
Avoid drinking alcohol. Some medicines
may not work correctly or may make you sick if
alcohol is in your body.
Check before stopping. Take prescription
medicine until it’s finished or until your doctor says
it’s all right to stop. Note that some medicines are
supposed to be taken only “as needed.”
Don’t share. Do not take medicines
prescribed for another person or give yours to someone else.

As autumn approaches and summer vacation is over, a
mother wakes up her son and says it's the first day of school,
so get up and get ready. He says, “Mom, I don’t want to go
back. Please don't make me. I hate school!”
-She says, “Don't be silly. It can't be that bad. I bet you can't
even think of two reasons not to go.”
-He says, “Really, I mean it! All the kids
hate me. And the teachers all think I'm
stupid.”
-She says, “Well, those aren't really good
reasons. Maybe you can try harder.”
-He says, “No, I don't want to go. Give
me two good reasons I should.”
-She replies, “Well, first of all, you’re
almost years 60 old. And second, you’re
the principal.”

Thursday, August 4th at
7:00 pm in the GH.
For over 11 years, John
Golden has been a valuable
member of the Country Club
Security team. We are happy to
name him the Employee of the
Month for August 2016.
Recently, the Country Club
gained a new Director of
Security in Saima. “John has
been very helpful in setting up
Saima for success,” Executive
Director Trish Behrens states.
“He has gone above and
beyond time and time again
and we truly appreciated him.”
Saima noted similarly, “Even when he is off duty, he
continues to care about everyone here at CCWH. If there is a
storm or power outage, he has called to see if there is anything
he could do.” He is affectionately (and respectfully) known as
“Big John” not only for his stature but his willingness to go to
great lengths to care for the residents.
John is dependable, personable, kind and helpful. These are
just a few words that can be used to describe John Golden of
the Country Club Security team. Be sure to give him a big
‘thank you’ when you see him next!
