Student Progress Interviews - 18th September
Online bookings for interviews have been made for about 50% of our students.
Bookings will continue to be open until the 17th September and we hope that more
parents will take this opportunity to arrange a time to meet with their child’s
teacher. Teachers will update parents on student progress as well as providing
suggestions for parents to continue supporting their child’s learning at home.
School will finish at 12.30pm on the 18th September to allow interviews to begin at 1.00pm.
East Cluster Success
Hannah Norrish and Renee Mitchell represented our school at the East Cluster Speech Competition held
at Pillans Point School on Tuesday. They were up against speech winners from Otumoetai schools including
Brookfield, Bellevue, Matua, Pillans Point & Otumoetai Primary. Hannah won the Year 5 section and Renee the
Year 6 section, congratulations to both girls, they presented their speeches in a confident and animated
way. Both girls will now go on to present their speeches at the WBOP event.
Uniform - New Additions
At Tuesday night’s BoT meeting two new uniform items were approved. Track pants and PE shorts will be added
to the list of options for School & PE uniform. Track pants ($38) will replace cargo pants, cargo pants have not
been a very popular option for a variety of reason. The PE shorts ($18) which will go onto our PE uniform list are
the same shorts listed by Otumoetai Intermediate on NZ Uniform’s website. Neither of these items will have the
school logo which will minimise cost for parents.
Absences - Reminders / Updates
If children are absent from school parents are asked to telephone, email or txt the office by 9 am, clearly stating
the reason for the absence. If a reason is not given then the absence will be entered as “?” Unknown. The
Unknown entry will remain on our attendance register until the absence is explained.
The following Attendance Codes are used to record absences:

If a child is absent and we have received no notification, the school will ring to verify the absence before
10:00am. To avoid any unnecessary costs and wasted time please let us know if children are going to be away
by leaving a message or txt (with explanation) on the school’s phone system.
If children are going to be absent from school for a period of time for non-medical reasons make contact with
your child/s teacher and forward a letter to the Principal explaining the reason for the absence.
If you need to collect your child at any time during the school day please check in at the office before leaving the
school and again when children return, children who are late to school (after 9.00am) must also check in at the
office. Please give your child’s teacher prior notice of any known absences that will occur and the reason for that
absence.

Senior School Speech Competition
On Friday 22nd August the Senior School held their annual speech competition. We were lucky enough to have
two judges from Bethlehem College, Ralph Davies and Hannah Morrison, year 13 students. Also Teia Fidow
and Malachi Fidow, past pupils. We were entertained for ninety minutes, listening to funny,
entertaining and informative speeches. It was a very hard decision for our judges but the final results were
Year 5: 1st Hannah, 2nd Nina, 3rd Jack
Year 6: 1st Renee, 2nd Meg, 3rd Theo

To All Kiwi Tag Parents
As you are aware that without parents supporting their child's sports by way of coaching and managing we are
not able to register the teams.
Lisa Elliott has been the Kiwi Tag co-ordinator for Bethlehem School for the past two years.
Term Four 2014 will be her last year with us. We are wanting to recruit either one or two parents who will work
alongside Lisa in term Four this year and who will be able to take over the role next year.
Please fill out the form below if you are able to assist in this role.

CAR FREE WEEK
Next week is Car Free Week. Grace and Tazmyn are Bethlehem
School’s Feet First co-ordinators and they have decided they would
like Bethlehem School to take part in Car Free Week. So every day
next week we would like all our children to walk, scooter, skateboard or
bike to school. You can only bike unaccompanied if you are Year 6.
Younger children, you could bike if you have an adult with you. If you can’t walk, bike,
scooter or skateboard to school because you live too far away get your parents to drop
you off on Te Paeroa Rd opposite the Montessori Preschool and walk from there. Every
day some senior students in high visibility vests will be at each of the school entryways
to record whether you have come to school in a car free way. At the end of the week
the points from each day will be added together and the class with the most points will
win a fun afternoon for their class. This fun afternoon will take place towards the end of
the year. We will take the number of children in each class into consideration when we
decide on the winning class.
For the 'A Night Before Christmas' celebration this year I am again putting together a children's choir. This choir
will be made up of children from Bethlehem Baptist Church, Bethlehem School and a local home school choir.
If you are in years 3-6 and enjoy singing I'd love to invite you to be a part of this opportunity.
'A Night Before Christmas' will be on Saturday 20th December with a postponement date of Sunday 21st
December. The venue this year is Mills Reef.
Anyone interested please meet Mrs Embling
Mon 22nd Sept @ school at lunch time in Rm 3
Being a part of this choir will require the following commitment:
Weekly Sunday afternoon rehearsals from Sunday October 26th
through to Sunday December 14th.
There will also be a sound check at some stage on the day of the performance - a time for this is yet to be
confirmed.
For any further information please contact me via email [email protected]
I look forward to having an awesome time singing & sharing in the celebration of Christmas with your children.
Many thanks
Rochelle Embling
