May 2009 - Hereford ISD
What’s Up
May 18, 2009
Hereford Independent School District
Congratulations to the “Top Ten”, well actually, eleven, graduates of HHS! According to HHS
senior counselor, Sara Pesina, there was a tie for 10th place this year. The top eleven students are pictured in alphabetical order, not in the order of their ranking. These students have reached the highest
standard of academic excellence--which is the demonstrated ability to perform, achieve, and/or excel in
scholastic activities. These eleven students committed to their goals and displayed the tenacity to see
those dreams fulfilled.

Hereford ISD
Welcome, Mr. Hodgson!
Hereford ISD welcomes new business manager, Mike Hodgson. Mr. Hodgson has a Bachelor of Science degree in business management
from Indiana University and a Master of Science
degree in education administration from Purdue
University. Mr. Hodgson’s former employment
was with Greater Clark County Schools, South
Bend Community Schools, Taylor Community
Schools, the state of Indiana, and Purdue University in the agriculture business office.
When asked why he wanted to come to Hereford, Mr. Hodgson said,
Now that my kids are grown I wanted a change. I have some cousins
in the San Antonio area and have spent some time in the Amarillo
area during the past couple of years. I liked the little bit that I saw.
I wanted to continue to work for a school district, but I wanted one
smaller than the last two I worked for. Greater Clark County has almost 11,000 students and South Bend has over 20,000. When I first
spoke to people at Hereford, I was so impressed with how friendly
and open everyone was that I decided I wanted to be part of
Hereford ISD.
Mike’s hobbies are music, whitewater rafting, and hockey.
A Volcano!
Wow! These mini volcanoes are
way too cool! Zaibrieanne Tamez
and Jeighdyn Hernandez experiment with mini volcanoes in their
class at Stanton.
Read to Your Child!
The migrant department of Hereford ISD
held a parent workshop on how to
improve your child’s reading skills.
Over 100 parents and children attended.
Betty Coneway taught the parents specific techniques on working with their
children, and she demonstrated how to
read a book.

Make Lemonade!
Tierra Blanca second
graders performed the
musical When Life
Gives You Lemons for
parents and students.
The musical teaches
about making the best
of a difficult situation as told from the
viewpoint of nursery
rhyme and fairytale
characters.

ALOHA TAKS!
Tierra Blanca 4th grade students reviewed
for the TAKS test with an “Aloha to TAKS”
reading camp. Students applied critical
reading skills such as “summarizing” and
“sequencing” to reading passages similar to
those that will be on the TAKS test.
Teacher, Courtney O’Neal, is

she coaches

Association’s Jump Rope for Heart was
kindergartener, Mandie Garnett (left). She is
handing off her money to 2nd and 3rd place
fifth graders, Abby Garcia (middle) and Levi

“O.K., guys and gals, if you
want to be a header, here’s
what you do!” Seth Dixon
demonstrates to second grade
classmates how to handle
a rope if you want to be a
famous team roper or maybe
just rope a steer.
Good Loop, Luis!
“That’s a pretty doggone good
loop, if I do say so myself!”
Lang Blankenship (left) instructs Luis Rico on the techniques of roping a steer.
HEREFORD HIGH SCHOOL
Congratulations to HHS student Mitchell Harris. He was chosen as the National Forensic League (NFL) Student of the Year for the Tall Cotton District. He also qualified
for Nationals in Humorous Interpretation. Mitchell’s coach, Jennifer Zinn, says the
following about Mitchell:
This student goes above and beyond when it comes to his
participation and influence in the National Forensic League.
. . He is well respected by all of his peers and teachers in the
school. He has a wacky sense of humor that is contagious.
. . He is an inspiration to his fellow teammates. Despite his
numerous successes, he keeps a humble attitude and encourages all his teammates to do their best. . . I cannot think of
a better student to represent the National Forensic League
as student of the year. Although he has some noteworthy
achievements, it is his drive, character, and service that are
truly an inspiration to others.

A true cowboy cookout was the culmination
of a study of Texas by West Central kindergarten students. Students gathered round a
“camp fire” and enjoyed cowboy chili, corn
meal muffins, and root beer.
Launch of the Ladybug
West Central kindergarteners participated
in a ladybug launch recently after a study
of the life cycle of the ladybug. Teachers ordered and received ladybug larvae.
The students then watched the larvae as it
developed into pupa and finally--into ladybugs. The students then released their
ladybugs into West Central’s backyard!
What an exciting and memorable way to
learn!

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
Bluebonnet’s second graders, wearing
their Dr. Seuss hats, listen carefully to
the story, “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by
none other than—Dr. Seuss. The students were thrilled to hear this story on
Read Across America Day. BB students
would like to dedicate this story to all
graduating seniors.
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any
direction you choose.
You’re on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who’ll decide
where to go.

Aikman. Community member, Steve

school is in session. Mr. Coneway

NUTS! A Musical Play That Celebrates the Circle of Life
The Northwest Second grade performed a
spring music program called Nuts! A Musical
Play That Celebrates the Circle of Life, which
talks about the life cycle. NW music teacher,
Kim Bulin, and physical education teacher, Jill
Harrison, guided the students to their successful
performance.
Nakylee Whatley
played “The Sun” in
the NW show, Nuts!
A Musical Play

the Circle of Life.
Kamille Hicks, Jaxon Warlick and Nathanyel Claudio
added flavor to the show, Nuts, with their vivid portrayal
of a bird, a porcupine, and a raccoon.
Dodge DeLozier, Gerald Sisk, Hernan
Perez, and Aubrey Schueler portrayed the
“Big Bad Squirrels” in the NW show, Nuts!
NW second graders obviously enjoyed being a part of the
spring musical, Nuts, as they sang and moved to the music.
