I was amazed, but managed to gasp “go Charlie!” and still maintain about a 7:30 pace myself! I have known Lonn Spencer as long as I have been a runner, about thirty years. So, I remember well when Lonn started bringing his little tow-headed boy with him to all the races he conducted. Little Charlie was his Dad’s helper, until he started running the races himself. When watching Little Charlie finish a race, my maternal side would coo “isn’t he just precious.” As a runner, I became very impressed with Charlie as he grew into a competitive runner and then the young man who achieved his goal of running for him and his Dad’s beloved Auburn! I think of Charlie often, but perhaps more often as we approach Do It In the Bush 2008 Start – photo by Peggy Olive the fun and popular Do It in the Bush 5K. A portion of the proceeds from this race are given as scholarships in Charlie Spencer’s honor. Sweethearts since high school, Lonn and Gayle Spencer have always displayed a notable love for all children. I would bet Lonn still remembers my children’s names to this day! They spent a great deal of time with him at finish lines so their Mom could run the races! I know they remember him and often ask affectionately about him. Charlie was Lonn and Gayle’s youngest child and their only son. Gayle has explained Charlie’s undiagnosed heart condition to me, and how it took his life. My mind can grasp and accept how this can happen to a healthy and athletic young man, but my heart….well it just does not understand, it hurts and it misses Charlie. Do It in the Bush 5K Scholarship Run Most of you probably already have your calendars set for the Do It In the Bush 5K on May 23rd. This has always been a big race for the Port City Pacers. Traditionally we celebrate the end of the racing season with a great cook-off and have our board elections for the following year. How many of us scratch our heads and wonder who will be portrayed on the tshirt? DIITB is our only “off road” run. It has some technical areas that can give runners pause as they run through some uneven ground. For several years, Do It In the Bush has been our scholarship race. It is a memorial to beloved local area runner Charlie Spencer. In the past few years, thousands of dollars have been raised to support young Pacer athletes in the pursuit of college dreams. Your support as a Port City Pacer member and your participation in this race help make this happen. Of all of the races that we have, let us all go out with a PACELETTER 3 bang and support Do It In the Bush 2009 5K so we can continue to build our scholarship monies and continue to have a memorial to a wonderful young man April 09 Volunteering By Maureen Van Devender Volunteer Opportunity for Do It In the Bush 2009 This race takes place at Medal of Honor (Cottage Hill) Park in Mobile. Proceeds benefit the Port City Pacers Scholarship Fund. The Port City Pacers need volunteers to help with registration, course setup, course assistance, water stops, finish line, and post race festivities. Arrival time is dependent on position (6:30am - 7:30am). Volunteers can spend two to three hours, depending on position. Please contact Maureen Van Devender [email protected] 251-377-3091 for more information and to schedule. Thank you for your consideration of volunteering with the Port City Pacers. PACELETTER 6 April 09 Promotion Commotion by Will Wright Someone said "Running is the most healthful and efficient way to get a fix on a new city, to unravel its navigational mysteries, to make it yours." Little Rock, AR, is not exactly a new city to me as I grew up in Pine Bluff about 40 miles away and traveled to the capital city many times to visit family members that lived there. With the 7th running of the Little Rock Marathon scheduled for Sunday, March 15, of this year, I decided to return for the race and hoped to visit my only living cousin in the state who was in his latter days of suffering with lung cancer. Sadly he crossed life's finish line 6 weeks before I toed the starting line. Don Withers and I flew up Saturday morning and I had the opportunity to visit my cousin's widow. We met Phillip Fields who flew in that afternoon and the three of us drove to the Expo to pick up our packets and gain some insights for the race. The Expo was adequate with a few "give aways", but the highlight for Don and me was meeting Steve Hibbs who heads up a marathon travel agency called Marathon Adventures. We had been talking about going to Athens, Greece, to run the marathon there and had been checking out trip prices. It so happened that Steve is taking a group there in November and had a substantially lower price than what we had found on the internet. We got the information we needed to follow up with him, and then it was on to a pasta dinner to "cap off the carbs" for the big race. While there was a 5K Run at 7:15 am, the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay kicked off Sunday morning at 8:00 am. Don took the early start at 6:00 am, and the motel provided shuttle service to the start and return service from the finish, which was convenient. The weather cooperated with cloudy skies, no wind, and temperatures in the upper 40's for the start, and rising only to the low 60's for the high. The race start had been changed from the prior year and commenced on President Clinton Ave near the River Market. Corrals were used for the first time and eliminated the problem of many slower runners lining up ahead of you. While chip timing was used, the need to weave in and out was much improved. The first part of the course was easier than expected with the major rises being the bridge across the Arkansas River into North Little Rock for a loop then back across to Little Rock for the remaining 20 miles. The route showcases a good bit of the city, cutting through historic neighborhoods and past national landmarks such as the Governor's Mansion and some stately homes; historic Villa Marre, a Victorian home made famous from the opening scene of the TV show "Designing Women"; the tallest building in the state, the Metropolitan Tower; the capitol building which is a replica of our nation's capitol; and Central High School, the scene of one of the country's Lead pack of runners at the March 2009 Azalea Trail Run – photo by Sylvia Rogers most important civil rights events in 1958. The race was well organized and the aid stations were well-stocked with plenty of water, electrolyte drinks, and fruit. You'll get an adrenaline rush as you run past several church choirs singing and numerous spectators calling out your name which is printed on your race number! Training on hills will help you handle the challenges of miles 13-16. While the scenery is great, the downhill at 16 can be hard on the quads. Additionally, the out-and-back portion covering miles 18-23 strains your mental toughness; while flat, it can be windy and seems to go on forever. It is a long stretch and comes at a terrible time in the race. A couple of short steep hills at miles 23 and 25 were great final tests. Around 5,000 runners crossed the finish line with some 1450 being in the marathon. I felt very good in finishing a tough course in 4:12 to win the age group; Don finished in a little over seven hours completing marathon # 198. Phillip, training to qualify for Boston, used this as a long run and ran 4:57. Each of us took home a finisher's tech shirt in addition to the regular shirt, and a piece of the (Little) Rock, the finisher's medal; it is 7.25 inches long and 6.25 inches wide, made of a black zinc alloy and weighs a pound and a half! The medal features the race's signature globe, race director's kiss and the "race for every pace" motto. These signify the race officials love every kind of runner from across the world. Many wonder what the future has in store for this Little (Rock) Marathon. Boston had to start somewhere, right? Volunteer Coordinator Report Maureen Van Devender told the board she had great volunteer turn out for both the ATR and the Old Mobile 8k. Results/Registration Peggy Olive reported to the board that the Old Mobile 8k had 384 registered runners. ATR Race Director Report Peggy Olive reported that everything went well at the ATR with 4,026 registered for the 10k and 1,355 in the Fun Run. Peggy said bad weather caused race registration to be down this year. The race is scheduled for March 27, 2010, with some of this year’s sponsors coming back next year Bill White said he would like to see the Pacers purchase background and table covers for the table set up at races or other events. Richard Leonard asked Bill to continue looking at various options so the board can vote at the next meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Pacer Clubhouse. Bill White made a motion to adjourn. The meeting was adjourned at 7:21 p.m. PACELETTER 12 May 09 More Odds and Ends Accomplishments continued from Page 11 Pepper Jelly 5K, Thomasville, Alabama, April 25th, 2009 The inaugural race at the Pepper Jelly 5K was a great success.
