A LETTER FROM
THE PAST PRESIDENT
My Fellow Members,
Thank you for your trust in allowing me the great honor of serving as Club
President this past year. The passion and commitment of our members
and staff made it even more exciting.
Great opportunities presented themselves over the last 12 months,
and the dedicated members of our Board of Directors, committees and management team
provided solid leadership in guiding our Club to success. I am confident our incoming President,
Kathy Wade, will carry this leadership forward into our 35th year, and perpetuate our status as the
best private club in Tampa!
Congratulations to our General Manager, Bill Rice, on his first full calendar year with our Club.
As I am sure you have noticed, Bill quickly recognized and rewarded our most respected and
knowledgeable staff with supervisory responsibilities, allowing them to showcase their outstanding
talent and skill.
John F. Kennedy said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present
are certain to miss the future.” As the sun sets on my time as Club President, I find it of great
importance that we, as a club, look forward to the future and maintain sight of what it is that makes
the Tampa Club such a wonderful experience: its members and staff.
Thank you, again, for allowing me to be your President.

A LETTER FROM
THE NEW PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Members,
Webster’s Dictionary, online, naturally, defines a “club” as “[a]n association
of persons for the promotion of some common object, as literature,
science, politics, good fellowship, etc.; esp. an association supported
by equal assessments or contributions of the members.” The moment I
stepped in the Tampa Club in April, 1997, I felt the fellowship. More than eighteen years later, I
still do. This Club is similarly defined by the extraordinary support and generous contributions of
numerous Members – in a time when so many about us waste their talent tearing down, I am in awe
of each of you who have used it to build up this Club. I know my fellow Board Members share my
respect and appreciation for you. (In a personal note of gratitude, I want to thank my partners at Fee
& Jeffries, P.A., for introducing me to the Club so many years ago and for supporting my membership
and work at the Club.) Because of our Members, this is the best club in Tampa. Your Board and Club
Management and Staff are determined to do all we can to make the Tampa Club an outstanding
private club in 2016. If you would like to build up the community of the Tampa Club, I invite you
to join us at the business and social events the Club has designed for your pleasure, noted in this
edition of The View. And let us – your President, Board, and Club Management and Staff – know how
we can serve you and promote fellowship at the Club. I am excited to see us grow in 2016.
Respectfully yours,
Kathleen Wade

A LETTER FROM THE MANAGER
As we close the books on 2015, I want to share some coming attractions you’ll want to mark in your
calendar. Most of you attended club events this past year and know what fun they are – and we have
plenty more in the works for 2016. Chaired by Robie Addams, your Food & Beverage Committee
has been diligent in developing events and activities to enhance the value of your membership.
This issue of The VIEW highlights our Johnny Cash/Patsy Cline Tribute Night among several
other exciting events. We have a 007-themed event planned for later this year, an 80s Dance Party
with fantastic live entertainment, and the return of the successful Monte Carlo Night. You’ll see
trivia nights, themed buffets, cigar dinners, cooking classes, great wine events, and networking activities including our
“State of Downtown” Breakfast featuring popular mayor (and Tampa Club member) Bob Buckhorn as keynote speaker.
Back by popular demand is the Friday Night Filet, and you can also look for more dinner, theatre and transportation outings
to the Straz. Members love the combination of a great dinner, roundtrip transportation and the world-class entertainment
available here in downtown Tampa. We’ll continue hosting our Every Friday Happy Hour featuring complimentary light hors
d’oeuvres and a drink special, and Low Dough dinners will remain an offering throughout the club Tuesday-Thursday nights.
New for 2016 is Date Night: One night a month we’re offering a fabulous three-course meal and live entertainment in a
romantic setting for just $25 per person. If you like to dine, dance and impress your date, this is the night for you!
With so many appealing activities to choose from, we look forward to seeing you often in 2016, and to building up the
community of the Tampa Club with you. Thank you for the outpouring of support and encouragement this past year, and
best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year.
Cheers,
William C. “Bill” Rice

Tampa Club’s membership
director knows a thing or
two about relationships.
story and photo by: Keith Marcel Woods
P
assionate is a good word if you want to
describe Membership Director Todd
Edwards. Impressive is another. Watching him
meet the needs of every guest and succeed
in growing the club’s membership inspires
those kinds of superlatives. I sat down with him
to learn more about who he is and what he’s
planning for 2016.
So Todd, how did you get started
in the hospitality industry?
I got involved in the hospitality industry way back.
My first job was washing dishes at an old place
called The Branch Ranch Restaurant. That was
when I was fifteen. Then, as I got through high
school and went to a technical college over here in
Tampa, I started bussing tables at an old restaurant
called Brewmasters. I really enjoyed the interaction
with the people. That’s where it all started.
Is this something that you
kind of felt like you knew
you wanted to do, or did you
stumble into that first job?
It was something that was a requirement for that
particular educational institution I was involved
in. What I quickly discovered was that academia
was not my strong suit and I just fell in love with
waiting tables. I started bartending around 1981,
then I got a job at Lakeland Yacht Club around
1982/83. That was my first taste of a private club
as an employee. I’m fortunate that I grew up in
clubs. My father [was] a golfer, so private clubs
have been a part of my life. It was very easy for
me to be comfortable in the club environment.
12 www.thetampaclub.com
What brought you to the Tampa Club?
Around ‘91, I left Disney World after about three years. I was in Orlando
and went to work at The Citrus Club. I quickly rose through the ranks
from a B server to an A server to a Captain, all within about nine months.
That’s where I first met Barry Shields, who was our manager here for
19 years. I … worked until ‘96 and then left. There was a period of
time where I had some challenges in my personal life. When things
stabilized, I reached out to Barry and inquired about positions being
available. There was a Banquet Captain position and I came and filled
it. I’ve been here ever since.
It seems like building relationships and connecting
with people is what you’re really passionate about.
That is true. I’ve always been pretty comfortable with myself and very
confident—sometimes to my detriment. But you know, that’s part of
my personality. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Taurus bull. I’ve always enjoyed
meeting people, creating relationships, building those relationships. In my
role as Membership Director, this is absolutely key. I’m just really looking
at nurturing those relationships further. That includes new members,
existing members, as well as our staff and employees. Even though I’m no
longer directly responsible for the service staff, I do feel a responsibility to
be present and share with them their role ... in membership by providing
the utmost service for our members.
January 5th will mark a year in this position. What
kind of changes have you seen happen on your end?
When I moved out of the Service Director role and into the membership
role, we basically elevated three people from the main line service
staff: Justin to the Bar Manager, Becky to Captain and Bernardo to
the Maître D’ position. We’ve also added in Joedy Vega, who is an
additional supervisor. I know that [all of our staff] are working very
hard at getting our product, what we deliver to the members on a
regular basis, up to the standard that we all hold dear. I think Bill has
really taken on the wine program with the club and has expanded that
and really refined the Vintners’ Club, which has always been the most
popular club within our club. To see that program reinvigorated is a
very positive move.
What does 2016 have in store for the current and
prospective members of the Tampa club?
Moving into the first quarter of 2016, you’re going to see a lot more
opportunities where we’re inviting neighbors that live downtown to
come see the club—doing Cocktail Connections and what we’re calling
UrbaNights, where we expose the different residential towers and folks
that are living in the urban core to the club. I think that we’re going to see
a lot more participation from our committee leaders as well as our Board
of Directors in energizing the current membership. Also, energizing all
the current members that we have to use the club more and to invite
their friends to become members, or just come to the club and see for
themselves. I think that it’s a very special place and it always has been in
my heart. I’m just very, very positive about how the club’s going to go.
Can you tell me about some of the organizations
that you are part of and support?
We are part of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the LGBT
Chamber of Commerce, and the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce.
We’re involved in the Brandon Foundation and we also partner with
Metropolitan Ministries, as well as the Lion’s Eye Institute and Easter Seals.
I would like to get more involved in some fun things that would speak to
our younger members. I’ve recently ... discovered mud runs [muddy
obstacle courses] and I love them. I did seven in 2015 and I’m already
banking up on some more in 2016. I think that anything we can do to
energize our staff as well as our younger members and somehow benefit
some of our local charities is a direction I want to move into in 2016.
Speaking of mud runs, I see a lot of the pictures
that you post on Facebook. It seems like you love
to travel and you live an active lifestyle. Is it true?
That is true. I do enjoy biking. We have a community that’s very bike
friendly in my opinion. I was born and raised in this area so I know all the
back roads like Bayshore Boulevard and the Courtney Campbell Causeway
with the bike trail that runs to Safety Harbor. I can get on my bike and be
gone for hours and travel 50 miles and it’s just a wonderful day.
“I’m just fortunate
that I’ve been able
to come back to the
club and transition
my career, pick
my replacement,
and do something
completely different
that I love.”
what kind of places do you travel to?
I went to Europe for the first time in 2013. Did a 10-day cruise from
Amsterdam to Barcelona and went around the Iberian Peninsula, stopped
several places in Spain and really enjoyed that experience. I love the
islands, the beach … I love the great state of Florida. It’s my home. People
talk about it being flat, but it’s beautiful. When I see a cypress dome or a
stand of oaks over an open prairie when going south down across Alligator
Alley or something, it just makes my heart swell. I love the mountains of
the Northwest and I love Canada. We have a beautiful country and one of
the things I realized after coming back from Europe, because the people
are a little different there, is that we have a great country here. There’s so
much of it I haven’t seen. I would like to explore more of the Southwest and
maybe some more island hopping in our back yard.
What’s you favorite part about working at the club?
The people that I work with here at the Tampa Club like Sandra, Jeneane,
Karen, Julia, Tony, Bernardo, Becky, Justin, Bill, Jermaine … I have
got to say that I have never worked with a group of people that were
this cohesive. You know, there’s a banter and an understanding and
we talk about stuff, we flush it out. I am honored to work with them.
I am surrounded by people that have strengths where I don’t. We all
understand that with each other. I’m just fortunate that I’ve been able to
come back to the club and transition my career, pick my replacement,
and do something completely different that I love. It’s given me new life.

A Thankful 2016
After the holidays, we are sure to owe a few thank
yous. Should you mail a card, make a call, send a
text or type an email? Different people and different
scenarios dictate different answers but the answer is
always, “Do something!”
During the holidays, when you received a gift in person,
you showed your appreciation with a handshake, a
hug and a thank you—but for those times when the
giver wasn’t present, you’ll need to deliver your thank
yous in some other way. Thoughtfully written notes
are warm and personal. A card in the mail is like a gift
in itself. When sending a card you should handwrite
in ink, include the date, mention by name the gift you
received, and explain just how you plan on using it.
For example, “I love the beautiful red sweater you
sent me. It is going to be perfect for my trip to New
York!” Follow up by texting or emailing a picture of
yourself in the sweater at a later date.
The good news is, you don’t always have to write
a note. If you received a gift from a close friend or
relative, it’s okay to email or call. If you received a
gift during an illness or time of sympathy, and you’re
not up to writing notes, ask a family member to
acknowledge the gift for you. The idea is to let the
giver know their gift and best wishes were received
and appreciated.
No matter how you deliver your thank yous this year,
make certain to do it in a timely manner (a good rule
of thumb is within seven days). When someone cares
enough to remember you, care enough about them
to say thank you, ASAP—and since we don’t get
as much personal mail as we used to, make it extra
special and send a card.
Happy New Year, everyone!
I am properly yours,
Kim Goddard
