In 2016 KSAF, KCO presents a brand-new program that demonstrates
plucked instruments' unique sounds with the most representative
pipa, liuqin, yangqin, etc. They give traditional stringed and woodwind
instruments a new and splendid look. Internationally considered terse,
exquisite, concise, effective, calm and full of affection, Ku, Pao-wen
who is the first permanent guest conductor of Singapore Chinese
Orchestra is specially invited. When he was a student, he had entered
the art school in the first place for 3 times, and even got Ph.D degrees
of orchestral conduct and musical arts in University of South Carolina.
After that, as the youngest international conductor who loves his
motherland so much, he went back to Taiwan and devoted himself to
education of musical arts. This time, with Mr. Ku’s professional
guidance, we only present new works and no old tunes.

brings you to
the new level
of wuxia!
This play just won the Local Drama Award
in the 21st Global Chinese Culture& Arts
Award.
The part related to martial arts is directed
and arranged by the Chief of the Troupe,
Sun Rong-huei. Taking the story written
by Chinese bestselling author Chang
Man-chuan as a starting point, Sun
Fu-ruei has successfully transformed
literary works into Taiwanese opera in
recent years. Modern theater elite, Lang
Tsu-yun, and Beijing and Kunqu opera
master, Wun Yu-hang are both invited to
be theatre directors.
In addition to extraordinary martial arts
which seem like movie plots, the play
shows that performers’ 3-year practice
makes them able to reveal the feelings
deep in characters’ souls. “The Heart in
Blade” is going to give you a breathtaking
shock.

classic concertos, including Mozart’s

Haydn’s “Trumpet Concerto in E Flat

Moreover, Weber’ overture of “Der

During the turbulent days, swaying between regret,
resignation, desperation of waiting, people are not
totally in the dark. We combine the lighting, an
impressionistic stage and Taiwanese opera to
display emotions deep rooted in people’s hearts
as well as a light in the dark.

Adapted from Danish writer Andersen's fairy tales “God
of Dreams,” the story is about a magical old man named
Olé who can travel back to the past. Without any line, the
actors try to tell the story through their body movements,
acrobatics and juggling. We hope to bring audience into
a bigger world of imagination.

The Seven Si lences: Sloth
Being a hard-working Yes man, the middle-aged manager forgets his ill wife. Smiling a lot, the young and simple
secretary is just an ordinary girl who gets money from
her boss in reward for her first night. A naive part-time
worker falls in love with an office lady and tries to win
her heart at all costs. They are 3 typical kinds of modern
people. They use “diligent” ways to be “lazy.” Like
walking zombies, they escape from loving people with
their “diligence.” This phenomenon is like a infectious
disease. The harm and indifference infect people one
after another.

“Fongshan First Public
Retail Market” is commonly
called “Bingzai Market.” The
name was derived from its history that
it supplied groceries to military bases in
Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County
(“Bingzai” means soldier in Taiwanese).
Because of the busy business activities, it
has become the prime site of the Fongshan
District. Until today, the surrounding streets
are still home to many tasty traditional
delicacies such as spring rolls, pan-fried
buns, salty silver needle noodles, etc.
Fongshan is like a historical scroll of Southern Taiwan. Let the Kaohsiung Fongshan
Holiday Cultural Tour Bus be your guide and take you to glide through this ancient
city filled with abundant culture, history and living energies.
In order to revitalize the historic monuments, Bureau of Cultural Affairs put 4 sets of Q-version historical figures
according to the historical scenes of the academy. These figures give the whole academy liveliness and visitors like
them so much.
Fongshan Magistrate Cao Jin’s term of office was during 1837 to 1841 in Cing Dynasty. He put a lot of effort on
infrastructures in Fongshan area. For example, to fortify the defense, he built more emplacements, city moats as well
as towers over city gates. Also, he renovated the administration office and warehouses and built an irrigation ditch for
Kaohsiung area, which is now known as “Caogong Canal.”

The scene is that Cao Jin went on the inspection tour to the academy. His administrative patrol team included people
who were in charge of striking a gong and people who held the sign written “Su Jing” and “Huei Bi” (which mean “Be
quiet” and “Avoid meeting” in Chinese) to call common people’s attention that the magistrate was coming. Cao Jin rode
on a horse and his assistant accompanied him. The chairman who ran the operation of the academy welcomed them at
the front gate.

Founded in 1814 (in the era of Emperor Jiacing in Cing Dynasty), Fongyi Academy,
over 200 years old, is Kaohsiung’s city-designated historic monument. Fongyi
Academy has a complete structure which is divided into 3 gates (front gate, gate into
academy and gate into worship hall). Take central axis as the standard line, Fongyi
Academy’s bilateral symmetry is one of the characteristics of traditional architecture. Fongyi Academy is Taiwan’s largest and the most complete remaining academy
since its restoration construction project completed in 2014.

Bureau of Cultural Affairs runs Cishan Station on the theme of
“story of sugar railways.” The imagery of sugar and railways are
used to decorate the outdoor scenes and arrange indoor exhibitions.
Moreover, made in Belgium, the steam locomotive No.353 of the
sugar railway, “Ciwei line,” is transported back to the station.
Bureau of Cultural Affairs adds train whistles and vibration motors
on it for visitors to experience the rhythm of the running train. There
are also a series of delicate and cute cultural creative products
waiting for you. The renowned old store “KI A PENG SIAN” looks
forward to your visit to have a taste of its special sugar cane drinks.

Robert Swinhoe was the first British consul and vice
consul in Taiwan. He was famous for not only his
diplomatic contribution but also his identity as a
biologist. When he was off duty, he went to collect new
wildlife species around different places and presented
his discovery back in England. Many Taiwan species’
names were derived from his last name, Swinhoe. The
famous Taiwan macaque is one of his contributions. He
sent a specimen of Taiwan macaque to British Museum
and found out this species is Taiwan’s endemic species.
Thus, Taiwan macaques in Kaohsiung Tzaishan become
one of the most representative spokesmen for Taiwan in
the international arena.

DEADLY PASSION, JAPAN:
THE FILMS OF SHOHEI
IMAMURA
Shohei Imamura, whose works include "Black Rain"
and two top-prize winners at Cannes, is one of the most
significant filmmakers of Japan's postwar generation and
died in Tokyo at the age of 79 of liver cancer. Born in an
upper-middle-class family in Tokyo in 1926, Mr. Imamura
was often grouped with Nagisa Oshima, Seijun Suzuki and
Masahiro Shinoda as a founder of the Japanese New Wave,
which emerged in the late 1950's and early 60's to shake
tradition-bound Japanese cinema. Through his works, we
see the core value of his creation which lay beneath what
he considered important— the lower part of one’s body,
and the lower class in our society.

Gallery for Citizens--Exhibition of Drawings by Wang Tiu-june
Drawing is the simplest and plainest method of painting. It can be best described as “the use of minimum materials and means to
express the maximum sense of fulfillment and joy.” Drawing is the main method of artistic
creation for Wang Tiu June and the themes of her drawings come from things commonly
seen in daily life. Wang excels at using steady and calm composition, simple and clean
light-dark contrast, and quiet colors to create a tranquil world without any interference.
Each of her drawings is a beautiful record of her life experiences. Her works are simple,
plain and straightforward without any dazzling technique or profound theoretical basis.
They are just like the san-ho-yuan (three-section compound) she lived in during her
childhood or like easy-to-read articles written in simple language. Just spend some time
living in the san-ho-yuan or reading the articles, you will appreciate them more and derive
joy and happiness from them.

Clues-Art by Textural Combination
In response to the global trend of human-centered development and environmental
conservation, the exhibition, Clues, is held to present the diverse creativity of 24 artists
through their works of fiber art. In the works, viewers can follow clues to different stories
and traces of life obtained through the artists’ observation. In a sense, this exhibition
is a gateway toward 24 paths of observation of human life and universe. The number,
“24”, is chosen for it is the number of hours in a day and the number of solar terms in
a year as well. In addition to symbolizing the close connections between the universe
and the fiber materials, the number also symbolizes the passage of time in the creation
of these works. Since ancient times, fibers and textiles have been an indispensable
part of human life. The simple intertwining of warps and wefts can weave out unlimited
possibilities. Using the gentle, subtle and mild textures unique of fiber materials, the participating artists have created works that
tell imaginary stories or stories about what really happened to the artists or to others on this land, in this society and in this everchanging world. 24 clues to explore the traces of life...

Boundary Narratives—Sakuliu
A boundary is an imaginary and imaginative space, a space that divides you and me, and a
space where tides of different cultures intertwine and interact with one another. Based on
the fact the histories of indigenous tribes in Taiwan were orally passed down generation
after generation, this dual solo exhibition, Boundary Narration, displays the works by two
indigenous artists, Sakuliu Pavavalung and Rahic Talif, who are pioneers in closely combining
contemporary artistic creation and heritage of their indigenous cultures. The two artists are
invited to write their own histories of tribal life by giving their description and interpretation
from their perspectives as artists and then, based on their description and interpretation, the
exhibition is intended to gradually construct the contemporary art chronology of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples representative of their
cultural characteristics both traditional and modern.

The Memories of Pier-2 Warehouses
Learn about this coastal area from Formosa, Ta-kao, Yancheng, and Pier-2. The core value of the city
was created from the fishing, salt, sugar, and manufacturing industries as well as arts and culture. The
centennial railroads and warehouses have witnessed the rise, fall, reemergence, and transformation of the
pier district. They survived wars, fell into decline as society changed, and were revived by arts and culture.
And now, after being creatively renovated in a variety of ways, they bid you welcome.

Ark of Tomorrow: 2015 Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival
The biennially held Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival has been
through 7 editions since 2001. The container encompasses all the various and
diverse concepts in the development of human civilizations, presented in a variety
of ways by artists coming from around the world, to create a spectacle of aesthetic
creativity. In recent years accompanied by the global concern and attention to the
human environment, the containers in the Container Arts Festival also become
a multi-culvert carrier of urban living, space, urban development as well as other
issues. Therefore, “Ark of Tomorrow: 2015 Kaohsiung International Container Arts
Festival” attempts to encourage a discussion between living and the environment,
inviting architects to design an ark, carrying the introspective reflection and hope, from containers. Containers in the name
of Ark are not only presented in a physical structure (carrier), it is also a box that incorporates a variety of thoughts and
imaginations. Such imaginations focus on the future humanity’s multiple state of existence, from the reflection on the Earth
that human resides on, to the concept of the diversity of life in extreme environments, and finally to the place people provide for
the body and mind to be sheltered after trauma. This turns over the stereotypical image of the container as an industrial waste,
allowing us to have a better realization of the city we rely our lives upon.

In Our Time
Focusing on the theme of landscape, one of the most popular themes of artistic creation and
also one of the easiest themes for the public to read and appreciate, this exhibition features
representative works from KMFA’s collection as well as works by several contemporary artists
mainly known for their landscape depiction. From this exhibition, viewers can see different thoughts
and facets of works depicting landscape and also observe how artists of different generations
seemingly differ but actually share some commonalities in telling stories through their works. Behind
each of the works in the exhibition, there are is an exciting world away from the hustle and bustle in
the mundane reality, a beautiful world based on the artist’s life experiences, unique personalities, life
philosophy, and imagination waiting for us to explore and appreciate.

Where can you find plants? You can easily find them in forests, country fields, seaside, ponds, and
parks and on the roadsides. But have you ever paid attention to their changes in different seasons?
“See a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wild flower.” In the eyes of artists, everything in
nature is the source of their creative inspiration. Taking on the theme of “life education”, this exhibition
features different kinds of contemporary artworks and teaching materials respectively on natural
aesthetics, material exploration, aesthetic inspiration and environmental protection. Hopefully, through their interactions with
different forms of artworks and exhibits in this exhibition, young viewers will be inspired to look at everything in nature from
more diversified perspectives, appreciate the harmonious coexistence between nature and humanity, and learn to respect
different individual creatures.

Continuing from its predecessor, the Boundary Narratives II—Dulan Impression exhibition
features the works and manuscript series created by Sakuliu, an artist from the Paiwan

and stayed at Sintung Sugar Factory. Titled “Dulan Impression”, this series of manuscripts
are records of Sakuliu’s days of living in an indigenous tribe not of his own. After years
of idleness, Sintung Sugar Factory has become a magnet for many artists from the other
places in Taiwan coming here one after another as artists in residence to create their
works and interact frequently with local artists. These artists painstakingly keep a distance
away from the mainstream art in Taiwan, trying to maintain the purity of their love and
commitment to art.

After two decades of development and improvement, the Kaohsiung Awards has
evolved from a local art contest and exhibition in Kaohsiung to one of the major
nationwide platforms for emerging artists to shine in Taiwan. In this exhibition,
the winning works of nearly 80 Kaohsiung Award winners over the past twenty
years are presented, providing viewers a comprehensive window into the exciting

“Soldiers should be loyal to their
country.”—this is the truth that many
people believe. However, there is a
group of soldiers mentioned by few
people. Due to the displacement of
generations and political alternation,
they had no choice but to play a role
in the tragedy of the times and did not know whom they
were fighting for. Those Taiwanese soldiers become ROC
Armed Forces from Taiwanese imperial Japan servicemen.
Later, they turned into Taiwanese soldiers who fought for
China and then become Taiwanese prisoners of wars. Facing
the change of self-identities and people who they fought
for, they suffered not only severe psychic trauma but also
violation of human rights. They saw real-life examples that
wars distort humanity but sadly few people care about it.

A History of Environmental
Movements in Kaohsiung
Although Kaohsiung rose to prominence as a port transportoriented city and features heavy industries, environmental
movements in the city have never slowed down. Examples
of Kaohsiung citizens’ effort to protect the environment
include its Anti-Petrochemical Protests in the 1980s and
the Southern Green Revolution in the 1990s. The road to
environmental sustainability was and is still an unfinished
path without end. The special exhibition, “A History of
Environmental Movements in Kaohsiung,” will showcase
both previous and current environmental movements in
Kaohsiung. This year, the Fifth Naphtha Cracker in Houjing
was relocated, and this exhibition displays the efforts and
hard work invested by Kaohsiung citizens to protect the
environment, how public consensus evolves and influences
local regions before being passed down, and Kaohsiung’s
future development visions.
