aniversário do seu primeiro voo, que transportou
sete passageiros (lotação máxima do avião) de
Ponta Delgada a Santa Maria, no dia 15 de junho
de 1947. Nesse dia teve início um grande desafio
que se mantém até hoje: ligar os Açores ao mundo
através de um serviço alicerçado nos valores da
Inovação, Fiabilidade e Simpatia.
Hoje, a SATA conta com uma frota de catorze
aeronaves e, como há sessenta e cinco anos,
continua a focar a sua atenção nos clientes e na
garantia de um excelente serviço que privilegia a
segurança e o conforto dos seus passageiros,
transportando-os para dezenas de destinos em todo
o Atlântico.
A estes destinos, a partir do dia 27 de setembro,
adicionaremos uma operação no Brasil. A SATA irá
voar para Salvador da Bahia com uma viagem
semanal em formato regular, com partida de Lisboa
à quinta-feira e regresso à sexta-feira. Este é mais
um grande passo na estratégia de crescimento da
nossa Companhia Aérea e uma aposta no grande
potencial do mercado brasileiro que, com a sua
economia emergente, regista taxas de crescimento
muito interessantes para o negócio da aviação
comercial.

Welcome aboard!
In this issue of Azorean Spirit, we are going to introduce you
to the charming and mysterious village of Sintra, classified as
World Heritage by UNESCO in the category of ‘ Cultural
Landscape’ in 1995. Although it’s agreeable to visit Sintra
any time of the year, the colors and climate of fall lend it a
very particular attraction. It’s worth stopping at a typical café
to taste the exquisite Sintra ‘queijadas’, the ‘travesseiros’ or
the Pena ‘pastéis’ and, at the same time, also delighting in
the Romantic architecture of this ornamented village with a
particular vegetation and exotic flowers.
Concerned about your well-being even before you travel, we
renovated the image of our site www.sata.pt making it
more appealing, intuitive and functional. Finding the best
values for the destinations of your choice or purchasing the
comfort amenities you value is now simpler and faster.
As well as having launched the new site, SATA has now a
group purchase service on the Internet. It’s an innovative
service which enables SATA customers to organize
themselves so that they can buy in group, thus allowing for
much more appealing prices on fares. SATA is the first
Portuguese airline company to offer this tool.
SATA is also a pioneer in Portugal’s commercial aviation
and it has recently celebrated the 65th anniversary of its
first flight which carried seven passengers (the plane’s full
capacity) from Ponta Delgada to Santa Maria on June
15th 1947. On that day, a big challenge started which
lasts to this day: to connect the Azores to the world
through a service based on values such as Innovation,
Reliability and Friendliness.
Today SATA has a fleet of fourteen aircrafts and, as sixtyfive years ago, it still focuses on its customers and on the
guarantee of an excellent service which favors the security
and comfort of its passengers, carrying them to dozens of
destinations all over the Atlantic.
To these destinations, as from September 27th we will be
adding a destination in Brazil. SATA will be flying to
Salvador da Bahia weekly in a regular format, leaving
Lisbon on Thursday and returning on Friday. This is yet
another huge step in the expansion strategy of our Airline
Company and a stride in the Brazilian market’s strong
potential, which with its emerging economy has registered
very interesting growth rates for the business of commercial
aviation.

SEMINÁRIO – VOAR SATA COM UM NOVO SORRISO
o dia 27 de julho realizou-se,
no Teatro Micaelense, em
Ponta Delgada, o primeiro
seminário Happy Flyer,
dedicado a todas as pessoas
que têm receio de andar de avião.
O evento contou com a presença de especialistas em
psicologia e profissionais de aviação e tratou temas
como: Aspetos Técnicos da Aviação, Segurança de
Voo e Controlo do Medo de Voar.
Este seminário insere-se no programa Happy Flyer,
que disponibiliza apoio a todos os que têm medo de
voar, sofrem de aerofobia (fobia de voo) ou
experimentam uma sensação de desconforto sempre
que um avião descola.
SEMINAR – FLYING SATA WITH A
SMILE ON YOUR FACE
On the 27th July the first seminar Happy Flyer
was held at the Teatro Micaelense in Ponta
Delgada. It was dedicated to all those people
who are afraid to fly.
The event had specialist in psychology and
aviation professionals and dealt with topics
such as: Technical Aspects of Aviation, Flight
Safety and Controlling Fear when Flying.
This seminar is part of the Happy Flyer
program, which is made available to those who
are afraid of, flying, suffer from aerophobia
(flight phobia) or experience a feeling of
discomfort each time a plane takes off.
Foram inauguradas duas exposições comemorativas deste
evento: uma no aeroporto de Santa Maria e outra no aeroporto
João Paulo II, em Ponta Delgada, seguida do lançamento do livro
“SATA, de Sociedade de Estudos a Sociedade Gestora de
Participações Sociais – Genese e Desenvolvimento Operacional”,
da autoria do Professor Ermelindo Peixoto.

para sete passageiros, com o

o primeiro passo na construção do sonho de ligar
o arquipélago dos Açores ao mundo.
A SATA Air Açores não parou de crescer desde então
e hoje, com 6 aviões turbo-hélice modernos, realiza
anualmente cerca de 15000 voos, transportando
cerca de 450.000 passageiros entre as várias ilhas dos
Açores e para a Madeira, Algarve e Canárias.

On June 15th 1947 SATA’s first commercial flight left
from São Miguel to Santa Maria, the aircraft which was

first step to making a dream
come true: connecting the
Azores archipelago to the

SATA Air Açores has not

then, with six modern
turboprop planes, it does

DAS OLIMPÍADAS DE ASTRONOMIA 2012

Astronomia realizou-se pela
primeira vez nos Açores,
nos dias 25 e 26 de maio,
no OASA - Observatório
Astronómico de Santana, na
Ribeira Grande.
As Olimpíadas incluíram
provas teóricas e práticas e tiveram a participação de
dez alunos das escolas secundárias de várias regiões
portuguesas.
Esta iniciativa tem como principais objetivos
incentivar o interesse pela ciência em geral e pela
Astronomia, promover o contacto com a realidade da
Astronomia como ciência e profissão em Portugal e
estimular o pensamento científico.

OLYMPICS The final of the Astronomy
Olympics we held for the first time in the
Azores on the 25th and 26th of May, at
OASA – Observatório Astronómico de
Santana, in Ribeira Grande.
The Olympics included theoretical and
practical tests and ten students of several
Portuguese secondary schools participated.
This imitative has the aim of incentivizing
the interest for science in general and for
Astronomy, to promote the contact with the
reality of Astronomy as a science and
profession in Portugal and to stimulate
scientific thought.
As Olimpíadas de Astronomia são realizadas
anualmente pela Sociedade Portuguesa de Astronom
alunos entre os 10ºe 12º anos.

Bodyboarders dos Açores e pela DAAZ Eventos,
servirá para apurar duas entradas diretas na
prova profissional, que terá início no dia 4 de
setembro. O vencedor destes “trials” terá acesso
direto ao “Round de 96” e o segundo lugar ao
“Round de 144”.
As inscrições, que estão abertas até ao dia 25 de
agosto, deverão ser feitas através de impresso
próprio na sede da USBA, nos Areais de Santa
Bárbara, ou solicitando o mesmo através do
correio eletrónico: [email protected].

PANAZOREAN INTERNATIONAL FILM
FESTIVAL EM PONTA DELGADA
Panazorean é um dos poucos
festivais de cinema do mundo
sobre migrações e
interculturalidade e tem a sua base
nos Açores, espaço por excelência
de partidas e chegadas de pessoas. Esta iniciativa tem
por objetivo reforçar o diálogo e apostar na riqueza
da diversidade cultural através dessa grande janela do
mundo que é o cinema.
A 1ª edição decorreu entre 14 a 21 de abril, em Ponta
Delgada, e converteu-se num evento único e
estimulante: foram exibidos 36 filmes de 15 países,
envolvendo 40 parceiros, entre os quais o Grupo
SATA, com mais de 2400 participantes e 15 mil euros
em prémios.

in the Azores, a privileged place of arrivals and
departures of people. This initiative aims at
reinforcing the dialog and focusing on the richness of
the cultural diversity through that large window open

The 1st edition was held between the 14th and 21st
April, in Ponta Delgada, and it became a unique and
stimulating event: 36 films were shown from 15
countries, involving 40 partners, among which Grupo
SATA, with over 2400 participants and 15 thousand
euros in awards.

Fruto do acaso, o primeiro contacto de Rodrigo
Herédia com o surf passou a ser um hobby e não
demorou muito a tornar-se paixão.
“Quando comecei, o surf era uma moda. Muitos dos
praticantes tinham um perfil característico, cabelos
alourados com corte em forma de tigela e eu não
tinha deles a melhor imagem. Mas acabei por tentar
e reconheço que a experiência se tornou marcante.
De então para cá, nunca mais parei”, afirma o agora
empresário de eventos.
Herédia lembra os seus primeiros anos de competição: “A minha geração abriu novos horizontes ao
surf em Portugal. De um hobby inicialmente marginal, a modalidade conheceu um enorme impulso
com o surgimento de inúmeros programas televisivos que despertaram o interesse de marcas e patrocinadores. Daí até as provas se multiplicarem, com
prize moneys cada vez mais elevados, foi um ápice”.
Before becoming a passion, surf was a hobby
for Rodrigo Herédia. Currently, it’s a way of
living which has taken the surfer to several
corners of the world. A forgotten board on his grandmother’s farm was the invitation for an experience which
ended up changing his life. Something which happened by
chance, Rodrigo Heredia’s first contact with surf, turned out
to be a hobby and did not take long to become a passion.
“When I started surf was ‘in’. Many surfers had a characteristic profile, blondish hair with a Beatles style haircut; they did not cause the best impression on me. But I
ended up trying and I have to admit the experience was
enduring. From then on, I have never stopped”, says the
now entrepreneur responsible for events.
Herédia remembers his first years competition years: “My
generation opened new horizons to surf in Portugal. From
an, at first, marginal hobby, it suddenly became well known
due to the numerous TV programs which triggered the interest of brands and sponsors. Very quickly the events became more frequent with higher and higher prize moneys”.
From the times he lived on the adrenaline of the seas, he
recalls moments he says were fantastic. “Surf made me

Do tempo em que vivia da adrenalina no mar, recorda momentos que diz terem sido fantásticos. “O surf
levou-me a conhecer quase toda as principais costas
marítimas do mundo – Tahiti, Havai, Maldivas,
Austrália, África do Sul…”.
Os Açores não poderiam ficar de fora da conversa:
“Este arquipélago é um destino de eleição, um local
que me diz muito, por inúmeros motivos. Em 1978,
fui residir com o meu pai para a ilha Terceira, onde
permaneci durante três anos, e aprendi a viver e tranquilidade, rodeado de uma beleza ímpar”.
O surf conquistou Herédia para as viagens: “Sempre
que possível, escolho destinos de mar. No meu roteiro, os Açores têm um lugar muito particular. Vou
todos os anos a S. Miguel, onde tenho casa. Continuo
apaixonado por lugares como a Ferraria, na ponta
oeste da ilha, ou a Poça da Beija, nas Furnas. Depois,
há a qualidade da gastronomia. Estas ilhas têm uma
mística muito própria”.
Atualmente, os Açores são palco de uma etapa do
circuito mundial de surf, mas Herédia considera que
a Região tem condições para fazer parte de um roteiro turístico da modalidade: “Os campeonatos de surf
são uma forma de chegar aos turistas. Este é um desporto que movimenta verbas significativas e, como
tal, deve ser potenciado”.

The Azores could not be left out of this conversation:
“This archipelago is a destination of choice, a place very
dear to me for several reasons. In 1978, I went to live with
my father on Terceira Island, I stayed there for three years
and I learned to live in peace surrounded by a stunning
landscape”.
Heredia got to enjoy traveling due to surf:” Whenever I
can, I choose destinations near the sea. The Azores has
a very special place on my destinations list. I go to São
Miguel every year, I own house there. I am still in love
with places like Ferraria, on the western part of the island,
or Poça da Beija, in Furnas. Then, there’s the quality of
the cuisine. These islands have a vey unique mystique.”
Currently, one of the legs of the world surf completion is held
in the Azores, but Herédia is of the opinion that the Region
meets all the conditions to be part of a touristic circuit for
this sports discipline: “ Surf championships are a way to appeal to tourists. This is a sport which involves huge amounts
of money and, as such, has to be developed”.
Entrepreneur Rodrigo Herédia thinks that the
quality of the waves at Santa Bárbara beach,
in Ribeira Grande, north of the island of S.

Torre de Belém, de onde partiam os navegadores portugueses rumo ao desconhecido. Os aviadores Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral
percorreram quatro etapas épicas que passaram por
Canárias, Cabo Verde, penedos de São Pedro e ilha
de Fernando Noronha. Guiados por um inovador
sextante com horizonte artificial, quase se despenharam e tiveram de substituir o Fairley II que tripula-

At the dawn of March 30th 1922, the seaplane Lusitânia
took off near Belém Tower in the same spot where
Portuguese navigators sailed toward the unknown. Aviators
Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, covered four epic
stages which took them to The Canary islands, Cap Verte,
Penedos de São Pedro and the Fernando de Noronha
Island. Guided by an innovative sextant with an artificial horizon, they nearly crashed and had to substitute
the Fairley II they where flying twice. But nothing stopped the apotheosis of their arrival in Rio de Janeiro on the

O amplo hangar da base aérea nº 1 - a primeira da Força
Aérea Portuguesa (FAP) -, renovado e aberto ao público desde 29 de junho, está repleto de aeronaves que
materializam mais de 100 anos de história da aviação
em Portugal. Inaugurado há 44 anos, em Alverca, o
museu transferiu-se para instalações modernas em
2009, quando deixaram de ser necessárias para a esquadra dos Aviocar da Força Aérea Portuguesa. E expandiu a sua vocação militar para abranger também a vertente da aviação comercial. “Mostra a memória da
aeronáutica nacional”, diz o director do Museu, coronel Antero Coutinho.

Correia, the curator, explains.
The vast hangar of air base nº 1 – the first of the
Portuguese Air Force (FAP) –, renovated and open to the
public since June 29th, is full of aircrafts which show more
than 100 years of the history of aviation in Portugal.
Inaugurated 44 years ago in Alverca, the museum got
transferred to modern facilities in 2009, when these were
no longer needed for the Aviocar fleet of the Portuguese
Air Force. It also expanded its military vocation to also
include commercial aviation. ‘It shows the memory of
national aeronautics’, says the director of the Museum,
coronel Antero Coutinho.
The museum exhibits the items chronologically, in the
explanatory panels as well as in the display of the aircrafts.
Visitors are over 30 thousand a year and to welcome them there are 22 people working there,
supported by the Grupo de Amigos do Museu
do Ar (Group of Friends of the Museu do Ar).

História da SATA
Um voo do “Açor” Beechcraft UC-45B Expeditor, entre
as ilhas de S. Miguel e Santa Maria, a 15 de junho de
1947, associou a SATA à história da aviação comercial
portuguesa – marco do qual se comemora a passagem
do 65º aniversário. A descolagem do aparelho significou o atenuar do isolamento insular de séculos. E foi
esse objetivo que presidiu à constituição da então
Sociedade Açoriana de Transportes Aéreos, que nunca
mais deixou de se expandir. Construídos aeródromos em
todas as ilhas, nas décadas de 70 e 80, a SATA cumpriu
o seu desígnio de unificar a Região, através de ligações
aéreas, com as históricas frotas dos AVRO HS 748 e
British Aerospace ATP, assim levando mais longe a alma
açoriana. Em 1999, começaram as ligações entre os
Açores e o Continente e a expansão para dezenas de destinos internacionais na Europa e América do Norte.

SATA’s history
The flight of the “Açor” Beechcraft UC-45B Expeditor
between the islands of S. Miguel and Santa Maria on
June 15th 1947, linked SATA to the history of Portuguese
commercial aviation – a landmark whose 65th anniversary is now being commemorated. The aircraft’s takeoff
meant reducing the century-long insular isolation. And it
was this objective that presided to the establishment of
the then Sociedade Açoriana de Transportes Aéreos and
it never stopped expanding. Airports were built on every
island in the 70s and 80s – SATA fulfilled its objective
of unifying the Region through air connections, with the
historical fleets of AVRO HS 748 and British Aerospace
ATP, thus taking the Azorean soul even farther. In 1999
the connections between the Azores and the Mainland started and the expansion for dozens for international destinations in Europe and North America.

A bit further is the entrance of the busy Getreidegasse
Street, where traditional commerce and modern stores are
found side by side. In the middle, in Hagenauerplatz, is
the humble house where Mozart was born. The musician’s memorabilia is displayed there. On the other bank
of the Salzach, where the family moved to later on, we
can find the musical salon where Wolfgang and his sister Maria Anna, as children showed their virtuosity before the nobility as well as the original grand piano Mozart
used in concerts throughout the European courts. A bit
more distant, the Mirabell Summer Palace and the charming gardens bearing the same name.

No prefácio do livro, o presidente do Executivo
Açoriano escreve: “Há nas nossas nove ilhas uma
identidade de natureza e de relevo do solo que, aliada a
condições gerais de clima, lhes imprime, natural e
necessariamente, nítidas marcas de unidade física”.
Com o mar como pano de fundo, as imagens convidam
a conhecer uma região de mistério e revelação, por entre
a bruma das ilhas atlânticas.

This work is the result of a book with the
same title, also enriched with the design by
Henrique Cayatte and texts by João Lopes.
The exhibition which can be seen at Centro
Português de Fotografia (Portuguese
Photography Center) in Oporto, under the
initiative of the Governo Regional dos
Açores (Azorean Regional Government),
was already on display at the Teatro
Micaelense, in Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel
and in Uruguay, South America.
In the book’s preface, the president of the
Azorean Government wrote: ‘There is in our
nine islands an identity of nature and relief
which, together with the general conditions
of the climate grants them, naturally and
necessarily, clear marks of physical unity’.
With the sea in the background, the images
invite us to visit a region of mystery and
revelation, amidst the mist of the Atlantic
islands.

regional, conquistando novos públicos para uma

O tom do festival “made in Açores” tem sido, por isso

jazz festival, born and raised on Terceira
Island, in the Azores, will be back on stage
from the 4th to the 6th of October for its
14th edition, with a five-star show.
The sound is unmistakable. The atmosphere is intimist.
AngraJazz is one of the most famous festivals of this
musical genre in Portugal. Since 1999 it has been held
annually in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between
Europe and America, always in soft light. It has helped
contribute to promote and divulge the best of worldwide,
national and regional jazz, captivating new publics for a
sound which …you first find strange but the come to like.
The tone of this festival “made in the Azores” has been,
for this reason, rising. AngraJazz, which is clearly generalist, has had lots of success. Numbers speak for themselves. Between 1999 and 2001, the festival organized 85

Dos claustros do Museu de Angra do Heroísmo, que
acolheu as quatro primeiras edições, para o palco do

From the cloisters of the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo
which was the first four editions’ venue, to the stage of

esquecer a feira do disco. A Orquestra AngraJazz volta
a abrir o evento, seguindo-se a atuação do quinteto
do polaco Tomasz Stanko. No segundo dia sobem ao
palco os portugueses Rui Teixeira Group e os americanos The Jack DeJohnette Group. Para o último dia
está reservada a atuação de Jason Moran and the
Bandwagon (Jason foi eleito em 2011 o melhor músico e pianista do ano). O festival termina com o concerto da Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos, considerada a melhor do jazz português.
O festival é anualmente organizado pela Associação
Cultural Angra Jazz e pela Câmara Municipal de Angra
do Heroísmo e presta homenagem a um estilo de
música originário de Nova Orleães, nos Estados
Unidos da América, uma terra de mistura de raças e
antigos escravos.

All the information on the festival, of the former editions before 2012, is available on the

bill of the 14th edition, which will take place from the
4th to the 6th October, is expected to thrill the public once
again. These three days will have a lot of swing and freestyle, not forgetting the record fair. The AngraJazz orchestra will once again open the event, followed by the Polish
quintet Tomasz Stanko. On he second day, it will be the
turn of the Portuguese Rui Teixeira Group and the
Americans The Jack DeJohnette Group. On the last day
the Jason Moran and the Bandwagon will perform (Jason
was voted the best musician and pianist of the year in
2011). The festival ends with a concert by the Orquestra
de Jazz de Matosinhos, considered to be the best of

Não se trata nem do áureo metal nobre, nem do cada vez mais raro
hidrocarboneto! É o basalto açoriano
das jóias únicas, criadas com o selo de qualidade
do artista Paulo do Vale que nos inspira este título.

esde cedo que Paulo do Vale encontrou a
sua vocação na oficina de ourives. Ao labor
quotidiano de artesão e ao trabalho criativo em projecto, junta a dedicação graciosa à manutenção do tesouro do Senhor
Santo Cristo dos Milagres e ao ofício de
avaliador oficial e ensaiador da Casa da Moeda. Como artista, tem tido um percurso reconhecidamente invulgar, apesar da sua juventude e da insularidade. Foi, no entanto, em
2004, que surgiu a grande novidade: Paulo do Vale descobre
o “ouro negro dos Açores”.
Não sendo Portugal um país produtor de materiais gemológicos, foi com agrado que o artista reconheceu a beleza e as
potencialidades do basalto insular, quando aplicado em jóias
de prata e de ouro de tradição portuguesa. O basalto, uma
conhecida rocha vulcânica negra, não é, gemologicamente
falando, uma pedra preciosa, nem um material nobre tradicional. Todavia, no contexto em que Paulo do Vale o utiliza nas suas criações, passa a ter um valor quase mítico: é
um pouco dos Açores e de Portugal que ali está. Este terá
sido um forte argumento para a escolha de um colar da sua
autoria como presente de Estado à Rainha da Jordânia,
durante a vista oficial do Presidente da República àquele
país do Médio Oriente.
Funcionando as jóias não apenas como acessórios de moda,
mas também como elementos simbólicos, por vezes até como
talismãs, o facto de nestas estar materializada uma porção da
terra-mãe confere-lhes um significado singular de grande nobreza. Daí a expressão “ouro negro” aqui atribuída ao basalto. Além

UNIQUE PIECES are on
THE AZORES’ BLACK GOLD There is gold
in the Azores and it’s black! It’s not the gold and noble
metal, nor the increasingly rare hidrocarbonate! It’s
the Azorean basalt of unique jewels, created with the
quality seal of artist Paulo do Vale. Paulo do Vale found
his vocation as a jeweller at an early age. To the daily labour as a craftsman and the creative work in projects, he adds his gracious dedication
to the maintenance of the treasure of the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres
and the trade of official evaluator at the Casa da Moeda mint. As an
artist, he has had an uncommon route, despite his youth and origin. It
was, however, in 2004 that the big news arrived:
Paulo do Vale discovers the “black gold of the Azores”.
With Portugal not being a producer of gems, the artist was pleased to
see the beauty and potential of the basalt, when applied to silver and
gold jewels with Portuguese tradition. The basalt, a known black volcanic rock, is not a precious stone, nor a noble traditional material.
However, in the context in which Paulo do Vale uses it in his creations,
it almost has a mythical value: there is a bit of the Azores and Portugal
in there. This played a strong part in the selection of one of his necklaces as a State Gift to the Queen of Jordan, during the Portuguese President’s
visit to the Middle Eastern country.

design de joalharia do Museu da Presidência da República,
em 2007, tendo vencido em 2008 o concurso promovido pelo
Museu Berardo, entre 200 designers, alguns deles internacionais.

The design, simplicity and modernity of these unrepeatable pieces have earned recognition at various levels, not only in the successive participation at
spaces for new creation at Portugal’s most important jewellery fair Portjóia,
and with prizes such as 1st place in the VIP Jóias of 2006 contest and a
honorouble 3rd place in the jewellery design contest at the Portuguese
Presidency Museum in 2007. In 2008, he won the contest promoted by the
Berardo Museum beating 200 other designers, some of them international.

adaptação para “ser errante”. Ele
dá dois exemplos: São Paulo e
Napoleão. Dois seres erráticos que
não conseguiam parar. Revejo-me
nos que não param, nos que são inquietos.
Uma das suas paixões é o teatro. A diplomacia
tem muito de representação?
Dou muita importância à palavra. Um político que resolve problemas pela persuasão, pela argumentação, pela
segurança, está a economizar à sociedade imensa violência e desperdício. Desse ponto de vista, concordo.
De que forma a nomeação para ministro dos
Negócios Estrangeiros mudou a sua perspetiva?
A minha perceção foi a de que a vida política internacional é mais racional do que parece. Embora se
fale muito de surpresas, estas são raras, para quem sabe
observar e analisar.

The expression is ‘erratic being’. I adapted it to ‘wandering being’. He gives two examples: Saint Paul and
Napoleon. Two erratic beings who could not stop. I recognize myself in those who do not stop, in those that are
restless.
One of your passions is the theater. Has diplomacy
a lot of acting involved?
I give words a lot of importance. A politician who solves
problems through persuasion, debate, safety is sparing
society a lot of violence and waste. From that point of view,
I agree.

Qual o papel que os Açores podem ter no contexto internacional?
A importância estratégica dos Açores estava nos aspetos militares e hoje está nos aspetos científicos e tecnológicos. Temos em Santa Maria um observatório
espacial. Temos na Graciosa um observatório dos oceanos. Somos uma plataforma tecnológica de última
geração. É uma mudança de paradigma.
Que locais destaca nos Açores? Tem a necessidade
da proximidade do mar?
Um dos grandes prazeres da minha vida é nadar nas
águas dos Açores. Gosto de ir à praia do Pópulo, em
S. Miguel. Se for à Terceira, dou um mergulho no
Porto Martins, na Silveira, nos Biscoitos. Ou no hotel
dos Franceses, nas Flores; ou na baía de São Lourenço,
To what extent did your appointment as Foreign
Office minister change your perspective?
My perception is that international politics is more rational than it seems. Although it is said there are many surprise, these are rare for who knows how to observe and
analyze.
What is the role that the Azores might play in the
international context?
The Azores’ strategic importance lay in military aspects
and today the lie in the scientific and technological aspects.
We have a spatial observatory on Santa Maria. On
Graciosa we have an ocean observatory. We are a cuttingedge technological platform. It’s a shift in paradigm.
Which in you o pinion are the nicest places in the
Azores? Do you feel the need to be close to the sea?
One of the biggest pleasures I have in life is to swim in
the Azorean sea. I like to go to the Pópulo beach, in São
Miguel. If I go to Terceira, I will swim in Porto Martins,
in Silveira, in Biscoitos. Or at the Hotel dos Franceses in
Flores; or in the São Lourenço Bay, in Santa Maria. I like
contemplating Pico, to stroll on the street along the coast
in Ponta Delgada, to have my drink in Horta. I feel fine
everywhere. I never felt lonely on the streets of the Azores.

Istambul. Mais acima, Paris, Genebra, Estrasburgo.
Fora da Europa, Rio de Janeiro, Boston - de que gosto
mais que Nova Iorque.

You had the chance to travel a lot. Which are your
favorite destinations?
Switzerland has always reminded me of the Azores because of its green landscape, the good cheese, the good beef.
I always like the urban life. I love Lisbon, Barcelona,
Rome, Istanbul. Further north, Paris, Geneva, Strasbourg.
Outside Europe, Rio de Janeiro, Boston – which I prefer
to New York.
To be an islander is to be a sailor like Nemésio said?
Yes. There is something that makes us be restless. That
makes us want to travel and get to know new horizons. On
a island we know that horizon is not the end of the world.
There is the impulse to go further. I feel that impulse.

É considerado um senador da República. Revê-se

A experiência conta. Gosto de continuar a ser útil.
A minha opinião é solicitada, o que considero
lisonjeiro. Como diria Séneca, alguém que tem esta
experiência deve manter a utilidade e fazer ouvir
a sua opinião.
You are considered a senator of the Republic. Do you
see yourself in that role?
Experience counts. I like to continue to be useful. I am
asked my opinion, which I find flattering. As Seneca
would say, someone who has this experience has to keep
being useful and make himself heard.
Cinema, theater, literature. Medeiros Ferreira
has built a solid cultural basis from a young
age. At 16 he was writing movie reviews in
newspapers and shortly afterward he was
acting at university. He met Vitorino Nemésio
at the Faculty of Arts. His favorite writers:

profusion of flavors and new gastronomic
trends was the atmosphere during the 10th
Fest Açores 2012, a festival promoted by the
Escola de Formação Turística e Hoteleira
(The Azores School for Tourism and Hotel
Industry) to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
For ten days, the many people heading for the Anfiteatro
restaurant, at Portas do Mar in Ponta Delgada, were able
to appreciate the refined culinary touch of ten top chefs
at a regional, national and international scale. Each day
they prepared a special tasting menu. Each of the six dishes that were served provided different flavors and sensations accompanied by some of the best wines of
Portuguese grape varieties.
The Azorean products, which were always present in each
of the dishes which were served, gained a new personality and a new interest, without losing their identity trait.

gastronomia voltada para o século XXI.

gastronomy”, as said Filipe Rocha, director of the Escola

The success of the 10th Fest Açores 2012 makes Filipe
Rocha think that the Region “is now part of the route of
gastronomic events of reference, presenting a gourmet
haute cuisine. He believes the archipelago has the potential to appeal to a public looking for good cuisine and the
chefs participating in the festival are of the same opinion.
“We are taking the Azores to a new level in what regards
communicating with the exterior.”

Paniagua, Ljubomir Stanisic, Luís Baena, Kevin Crawley,

Pelo mar dos Açores passam anualmente
mais de 24 espécies de baleias e golfinhos,
cinco espécies de tartarugas marinhas e mais
de 600 espécies de peixes. Nas suas águas
profundas é possível encontrar desde o
maior peixe do mundo, o tubarão baleia, ao
maior animal que alguma vez habitou o
planeta terra, a baleia azul. Esta riqueza e
biodiversidade tornam o arquipélago um
“oásis de vida”, capaz de despertar irreprimíveis paixões pela natureza.
O fotógrafo Nuno Sá chegou aos Açores
em 2002 e tornou-se imediatamente fã
do arquipélago. O seu primeiro contacto com o mundo subaquático ocorreu

unique pictures of the most varied species
and these images are spread worldwide
and are worth more than what words can
convey. Every year more than 24 species of
whales and dolphins, five species of sea turtles
and more than 600 species of fish swim through
the sea of the Azores. In its deep waters one can
find from the largest fish in the world, the whale
shark, to the largest creature inhabiting the
earth, the blue whale. This richness and biodiversity make the archipelago an “oasis of life”,
capable of awakening an irrepressible passion
for nature.
The photographer Nuno Sá, arrived in the Azores
in 2002 and immediately became a fan of the

Desde então, o fotógrafo de natureza de
ascendência portuguesa mais premiado a
nível nacional e internacional tem contribuído para despertar nos outros a mesma
paixão, chamando a atenção do público
mundial, através de imagens de grande
impacto visual, para os segredos que o
mar dos Açores encerra.
A sua mais recente aventura é o projeto
“Oásis”, que pretende mostrar a vida marinha do arquipélago como nunca antes foi
vista. Nos próximos dois anos, 36 imagens
de grande formato serão expostas na rua,
num circuito itinerante a nível nacional e
internacional. A exposição arrancou a 19 de
Julho, no Oceanário de Lisboa, seguindo
depois para a ilha de S. Miguel, nos Açores.
A mostra é muito mais do que uma exibição de momentos captados na imensidão
do mar que rodeia as nove ilhas açorianas.

Portuguese origin, whose work has been awarded national and international prizes, has contributed to awaken the same passion in others,
calling the attention of the public worldwide
to the secrets the sea of the Azores has to unveil
through images of a huge visual impact.
His most recent ad venture is the project
‘Oásis’ which aims at showing the archipelago’s sea life as it was never shown before.
For the next two years, 36 large-format images will be exhibited outdoors, in a national
and international traveling exhibition. The
exhibition started on July 19th, at Lisbon’s
Oceanário , and from there it will travel to
the island of São Miguel in the Azores.
The exhibition is much more than an exhibition of moments captured in the vastness
of the sea surrounding the nine Azorean
islands. Nuno Sá’s work is a synonym of quality, but also of surprise. He shows us sharks
and whales, not forgetting the famous sea
turtles in the incredible blue of the Atlantic
which surrounds the Azorean islands.

Açores, já levou, nas asas dos aviões da SATA, os
12 presidentes que os Açores ofereceram ao mundo
e outras personalidades de renome internacional,
de origem açoriana, que se têm destacado na
música e no setor alimentar. Nesta edição, a
Craig Mello nasceu em Connecticut, EUA. É
descende de família açoriana, da ilha de São
Miguel. Em 2006 foi um dos galardoados com o
Prémio Nobel da Medicina, pela descoberta de
um mecanismo que pode ajudar a explicar
algumas doenças, entre as quais alguns tipos de
cancro. Atualmente é professor de Medicina
Molecular na Universidade de Massachussets e
investigador do Instituto de Medicina Howard
Hughes, em Maryland. Entre muitos prémios já recebidos, em Janeiro
de 2012, a Universidade dos Açores atribuiu-lhe o grau de doutor
“honoris causa”.
Craig Mello was born in Connecticut, USA. He descends from an
Azorean family from the island of São Miguel. In 2006 he was one of the
laureates of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, for the discovery of a mechanism
that may help explain some diseases, including some types of cancer. Craig
Mello is currently a Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of
Massachusetts and a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in
Maryland. Among many awards already received, in January 2012, the
University of the Azores awarded him a "honoris causa" doctorate.

Susana Campos, is originally descendant from families of
São Miguel and is a professor at the Harvard Medical School. She
completed her M.D. at Georgetown University and between 1995 and
1998 received a scholarship in the area of hematology-oncology at the
Brigham Hospital in Boston. In 2000, Susana Campos received the
MPH from Harvard University School of Medicine. She is a researcher
at the Dana-Farber Institute in Massachusetts, and collaborates with
the Society of Oncologists, in the National Network of Gynecological
and Breast Cancer. Susana Campos is certified in internal medicine,
oncology and hematology, and integrates international research teams.

the prestigious Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain.

this issue, the Regional Department for the Communities
is proud to present a number of Azorean-born or
Azorean-descendant researchers/scientists who have been
recognized at the highest level due to their
accomplishments. Far from including all people who
have distinguished themselves in these categories, this
page highlights eight names linked to medicine, social
geography, education, politics, agriculture, and electrical
and computer engineering.

Arthur Teixeira, descendente de açorianos, é
professor de agricultura biológica e de
engenharia alimentar e nutrição humana na
Universidade de Florida, EUA. Tem um
mestrado em Engenharia Mecânica e um
doutoramento em Engenharia de Alimentos e
Agricultura, pela Universidade de
Massachusetts. Ao longo da sua carreira
profissional desenvolveu pesquisas em várias
áreas da engenharia da alimentação. Dos inúmeros prémios
recebidos destaca-se o Life Achievement Award 2011, atribuído
pela International Association for Engineering and Food.
Arthur Teixeira, descendant of Azoreans, is a professor

Elvino Sousa, a native from the island of Graciosa moved to
Canada in 1970. He is a professor in the Electrical and Computer
Engineering Department at the University of Toronto, and holds, since
1985, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of
Southern California. Over the past 25 years, Evelvino Sousa has
devoted much of his career to research in wireless communications.
Among many distinctions, he has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II
Golden Jubilee Medal, by the Government of Canada for the significant
contribution made to this country.

Catedrática e investigadora na Lesley University,

Maria de Lourdes Serpa was born in the island of São Jorge. She
specializes in education and teacher training in the U.S. and is currently a
Senior Professor (full-tenure) and researcher at Lesley University in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. Her work is recognized in the U.S. and internationally, and for
it, she has received the following awards: the Lesley University Impact Award;
the Commendation of Public Instruction awarded by the President of the
Portuguese Republic; the Massachusetts Teacher Association-Creative
Leadership in Human Rights Awards; the Massachusetts Department of
Education Award, and the Ernest Lynton Award for Professional Service AAHE & NERCHE, among other distinctions.

Ernest J. Moniz, is an Azorean-descendant born in
Massachusetts. He holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics and was awarded a
“honoris causa” doctorate by the University of Athens. In 1997 he was a
sub-Secretary for the Federal Department of Energy (DOE). Ernest J.
Moniz was an Associate Director of Science, at the Office of Science and
Technology Policy of President Clinton. He has worked at several
universities, labs, professional associations and government agencies in
research and advisory duties. Currently, Ernest J. Moniz is an advisor in
the Science and Technology Council of President Obama.

ristol, fundada em 1680,
desenvolveu-se graças ao florescente comércio que manteve com as Índias Ocidentais, o qual também caracterizou a maioria das restantes
cidades portuárias de Rhode
Island (Providence, Newport
e Warren) nos tempos da
América Colonial. A construção naval, o tráfico de escravos e a destilação da cana
de açúcar foram a base do crescimento económico
desta região da Nova Inglaterra que, dada a sua profunda vocação marítima, desde cedo manteve relações
mercantis com Portugal.
A presença expressiva de portugueses nesta zona só
data, contudo, dos finais do século XIX e um dos
seus primeiros sinais é o aparecimento do Concelho
nº 1 da Associação Portuguesa de Beneficência de
Rhode Island, fundado em 1892 na cidade de Bristol
e depois dotado de estatuto autónomo em 1897, sob
a designação de Associação Portuguesa Beneficente D.
Luís Filipe. A existência deste tipo de estruturas associativas, que funcionavam como plataformas de acolhimento dos emigrantes recém-chegados aos Estados
Unidos da América, traduz o significativo número
de portugueses já aqui residentes nesse período.
As numerosas atividades industriais então existentes

Bristol founded in 1680, developed thanks to the flourishing commerce it maintained with the West Indies, which
also characterized the majority of the other seaport cities
of Rhode Island (Providence, Newport and warren) in the
times of Colonial America. Shipbuilding, slave trade and
the distillation of sugar cane were the basis for the economic growth of this New England region, which due to
its strong maritime identity, from early on maintained mercantile relations with Portugal.
The significant presence of Portuguese in this area however only dates rom the late 19th century and one of the
first signs of this presence was the Concelho nº 1 da
Associação Portuguesa de Beneficência de Rhode Island
founded in 1892 in Bristol and later granted an autonomous status in 1897, under the designation Associação
Portuguesa Beneficente D. Luís Filipe. The existence of this
type of associative structures, which functioned as platforms to welcome newly arrived emigrants to the United
Sates of America, clearly expresses the significant number of Portuguese already living in this area at the time.
The many industrial activities that existed in Bristol by
then, which had to do with different areas such as textiles, shipbuilding and rubber plants, employed large numbers of Portuguese and Italian manpower which, throug-

absorveram grandes quantidades de mão de obra portuguesa e italiana que, ao longo de cem anos (18901990), aqui encontraram o trabalho que lhes faltava
na pátria de origem. Fazendo justiça ao velho aforismo latino ubi panis, ibi patria (onde há pão, está o meu
país), milhares de portugueses, na sua maioria açorianos, lançaram raízes nesta cidade e muitos deles
não hesitaram em naturalizar-se americanos.
Um dos testemunhos mais eloquentes deste processo de americanização – e do quanto ele já é antigo –
está patente no monumento de homenagem erigido
pelos cidadãos de Bristol aos filhos da terra mortos
em combate (Bristol War Veterans. Honor Roll

temos qualquer dúvida em fazer eco do desejo do
Tony quanto à lealdade dos outros jovens da sua
nacionalidade.”
O contributo português para o famoso “caldo cultural” americano pode não ser tão vibrante como, por

respeitável como este. Para o descobrirmos basta procurar um pouco para além das fachadas das lojas e
restaurantes açorianos ainda hoje existentes em
Bristol, isto é, nos monumentos e arquivos da própria memória americana.

que algo grandioso nos espera lá fora. Se somos da aldeia, é a cidade. Se somos
da cidade, é o campo. Se somos das ilhas, é o continente. Se somos do continente, é o estrangeiro.
Algures, haverá um sítio onde seremos compreendidos, o nosso trabalho apreciado, a nossa visão do
mundo partilhada – com a correspondente retribuição
financeira. O sucesso, supomos, é a felicidade, e a
felicidade uma região no mapa. O que quer que diga
o bilhete de avião, ser feliz é sempre o destino de
quem parte, quando parte.
No vaidoso século XXI que tantos planos tinha para o
futuro, voltámos a números de emigração dos anos 60.
Não foi só a estafada crise. Essa, dirão as enciclopédias,
começou em 2008. Bem antes disso, já recém-diplomados começavam a sair direitinhos da faculdade para o
aeroporto, não tanto por necessidade económica, mas
em busca de algo maior, onde coubessem todas as
ilusões que tinham. Iam para longe, onde, por definição,
tudo era possível. Londres, Barcelona, Amesterdão – aí
é que era. Aí é que seriam apreciados. E felizes.

It’s something that doesn’t choose geographies. From wherever we always think there’s something big awaiting us
elsewhere. If we are from the countryside, it’s the city. If
we are from the city, it’s the countryside. If we are islanders, it’s the mainland. If we are from the mainland, it’s
abroad. Somewhere there is a place where we will be understood, our work acknowledged, our vision of the world shared – with the corresponding financial reward. Success, we
think, is happiness and happiness a place on a map.
Whatever the plane ticket might say, being happy is always
the destination of whoever leaves, when he leaves.
In the proud 21st century, which had with so many plans
for the future, we came back to the same emigration rate
as in the 60s. It was not only the much referred to crisis.
The crisis, encyclopedias will say, started in 2008. Way
before, recent graduates started leaving the faculty and going
straight to the airport, but in search of something greater
where all their dreams could come true. They’d go far where,
by definition, anything was possible. London, Barcelona, and
Amsterdam – those were the places to be. Those were the
places where they would be appreciated and happy.
For an Azorean – and certainly also from someone from

a utopia do “lá fora” passa depressa. Fizemos a nossa emigração
no dia em que saímos de casa para estudar.

Bem podem dizer que é o mesmo país – claro que é
– mas quem troca a Terra-Chã ou Vila Franca do
Campo por Lisboa faz uma viagem bem maior do
que quem troca uma capital europeia por outra, onde
encontrará os mesmo códigos urbanos, os mesmos
placards publicitários, as mesmas lojas e restaurantes
e bancos, as mesmas promessas. O miúdo açoriano

They can keep saying it’s the same country – of course it

Campo for Lisbon goes on a much bigger journey than
whoever leaves a European capital for another, where
he’ll be able to find the same urban codes, the same outdoors, the same stores and restaurants and banks, the same
promises. The Azorean kid who leaves for faculty enters
a different world, his rhythm of life changes, the way he
views things changes. Wherever he may look, nothing is
familiar. If he looks back, he won’t see any sign showing
the way back nor the sea.

CRÓNICA
que parte para a faculdade troca de mundo, troca o
ritmo da vida, troca a própria respiração das coisas.
Para onde quer que olhe, nada lhe é familiar. Se olhar
para trás, não verá nenhuma placa apontando o
caminho de volta. Nem o mar.
Nada de ressentimentos. Num tempo que decidiu
que, aos 40 anos, ainda se é jovem, os ilhéus são
forçados a crescer mais depressa. É preciso agradecêlo. Não se vai ao fim-de-semana a casa. Não há comida da mãe no congelador. Um tipo faz-se homem.
Uma miúda faz-se mulher. Tratamos de nós. Será exigir demais de um adulto?
Depois, os anos passam e deixa de se pensar nisto.
Vivemos onde vivemos. O importante não é o que
está lá fora, mas o que está cá dentro. Até que vemos
trintões feitos emigrar, convencidos de que a Lisboa
que parecia enorme ao miúdo açoriano é para eles
pouco mais do que uma terra de província, e que lá
fora – ah! O mítico lá fora! As califórnias perdidas de
abundância de Pedro da Silveira! – é que estava tudo,
é que sabiam fazer as coisas, era a civilização, a riqueza, o sonho americanizado do triunfo.
Passado um ano ou dois, começavam a regressar os
primeiros; ao fim de meia-dúzia, já cá estavam todos.
Com dez ou quinze anos de atraso, tinham feito a descoberta do garoto ilhéu: as promessas que fizemos a
nós próprios, não é o mundo quem tem de as cumprir. Somos nós.
Este Verão, como todos os anos, emigrantes de todo
o Hemisfério Norte voltarão a casa. Cada um deles
terá outra vez, à sua maneira, a epifania do regresso.
Sei quando será a minha: no primeiro mergulho no
mar. Num só movimento, a verdade voltará, cristalina: eu sou daqui. A Língua Portuguesa é muito clara:
o verbo não é “estar” nem “vir”; é “ser”. De pertença,
identidade.
Emigrar voltou tragicamente a ser necessário; viajar é das
coisas mais empolgantes do mundo; mas partir por partir não nos salva a vida. Regressar a casa, por vezes, sim.

No regrets. At a time when it was decided that at 40 one
is still young, the islanders are forced to grow up faster
and one has to be thankful. You cannot go hoe on weekends. Mom’s food is not in the freezer. A young man becomes a man. A young girl becomes a woman. We take care
of ourselves. Is it asking too much of an adult?
Then years go by and we stop thinking about this. We
live where we live. The important is not what’s outside
but inside. Until we see thirty-something people emigrating, convinced that Lisbon which seemed big to the
Azorean kid for them is little more than a provincial city
and abroad – ah! The mythic abroad! Pedro Silveira’s lost
californias of abundance was where everything was, where
people knew how to do things, it was civilization, richness, the American dream of success!
One or two years later, the first emigrants started returning; after six years, they had all returned. With a delay
of ten or fifteen years, they had discovered the same as
the kid from the islands: promises we made to ourselves
it’s not the world that has to keep them, we do.
This summer, as every year, emigrants from all over the
Northern Hemisphere will come back home. Each of them
will once more have the epiphany of homecoming. I know
when mine will be: when I fist dive in the sea. In just one
movement, the truth will come back crystal clear: this is
where I belong. The Portuguese language is very clear: the
verb is not ‘to come’ it is ‘to be’, of belonging, of identity.
Emigrating has tragically become necessary; to travel is
one of the most exciting things in the world; but to leave
just because won’t save our life. Coming back home,
sometimes, yes.
