From the Helm...
Fall has arrived in the Great Lakes and replacing those brilliant red summer sunsets
will be the full corn Moon. This year it is a perigee moon and an eclipse is thrown
in just to make things exciting so we will have it enchant us during a moonlight
sail. I have often thought that September on the Great Lakes is the best of times
to be sailing. Summer crowds have dissipated and our thunderstorms abate to
leave a parade of 10 to 15 knot days for us to revel in before haul out time arrives
with Gord Lightfoot’s proverbial gales of November.
By now you are wondering who is the lady with the fish. Well I like to fish when
cruising, and each year the fishing contest goes like this. First fish, biggest fish and
last fish. The lady in the picture won the biggest fish. In fact, she showed me this
picture with alarming regularity all summer long. My granddaughter Emma cleaned
up in the other classes, I cleaned the fish.
On a more official note positions on the INA Board will be opening in
2016 as current member terms come to an end. We strive to maintain
a balance of members from the US and Canada and if you are interested
in exploring being a member of the INA board please drop me a line.
We need assistance with membership outreach, keeping our web site
current, as well as Update and Registry work.
A constant refrain over the past months has been the topic of Nonsuch
Jewelry that was available in the past. We have now been able to make
arrangement to offer these items once again and they will be available
on the INA website. If you are looking for a nice holiday gift a silver or
gold set of earnings or a pendent is just the ticket! See page 5 for more
information.
Over the past months we have been working to locate a Rendezvous
venue for 2016. A number of ideas were given consideration as venues.
Unfortunately there is not a suitable 2016 location in hand to hold a weeklong event. In light of this we are now focusing efforts on alternative
2016 and 2017 event ideas so stay tuned!

align how we deliver services with members needs and preferences. So let us know what you think!

Regional Associations are organized and operated by Nonsuch owners independent of the International Nonsuch Association (INA).
Although INA encourages their formation, it does not control their activities, membership or fees. The INA will, on request, provide
assistance and advice to interested parties to facilitate their organization. INA recognizes that regional associations contribute to the
ongoing strength of the overall Nonsuch organization.
If you are located in an area which is served by an existing association we encourage you to participate in its activities.
If the association in your area is currently not as active as you would like, take the initiative by offering the leader of the group your
assistance in organizing an activity for the benefit of all members.

A Different Look.....

The winter of 2014-2015 was
exceptionally cold in Maryland.
The grey days dragged on. It
seemed as though we’d never
recommission FunSuch and start
sailing again.
I decided enough was enough. It
was time to get back to boating,
even if only on my computer.
I had recently scanned in my
old photographs so had several
decades’ worth of boating pictures
readily available.
I like to play around in Photoshop and the accompanying images are just
a sample of the ones I’ve created. I often use a technique called polar
distortion. It’s frequently used with landscapes. I like the challenge of
hiding the seam in a polar distortion where the left and right sides wrap
around and come together. I made a landscape using an old picture I had
taken of the Concord Point Light the first time we had sailed to the head of
the Chesapeake Bay.
But I really enjoy doing non-typical polar distortions.

So I began a series of Nonsuches under sail. My picture from the spring
2008 Chesapeake Bay Nonsuch Association (CBNA) rendezvous was straight
forward. The picture Ed took at the Spring 2014 rendezvous, however,
provided an extra challenge (Fig. 5). We had heavy overcast that day, so colors
were muddy even when using various post processing tricks. So instead of

trying to add more color in, I went in the other direction. I took color out, making the picture
monochromatic. Then I posterized it, using only four shades of blue, much like
one would do if creating a poster using silk
screening.

After I worked though pictures of Nonsuches
under sail, I turned to boats at anchor. Over the years, I’ve
documented every one of the CBNA sunflower raft ups from the top of
a mast. This time I created a new type of raft up, the starburst. The
neighbor of the rendezvous host took this picture at the fall 2008
rendezvous.

This starburst raft up is one of my favorite polar distortions.
Ed showed me a picture on-line that had a different type of
distortion. After a few minutes playing around in Photoshop’s
pull down menus, I realized it was a technique called spherize.
This technique adds a lot of spherical aberration such as one
might experience when looking at a picture in the bottom of a
glass paperweight. The distortion is most noticeable at the top and
bottom of the picture.
I applied the spherizing technique to a photograph Ed took of Al
Burke’s Nonsuch 30, Razzmatazz. We were anchored in an unnamed
cove on the Wye River. We affectionately refer to it as the O’Neill’s
cove, after our late friend and former Nonsuch owner, Jerry O’Neill, who had introduced us to this quiet anchorage.

Razzmatazz on the Wye River
Looking through my pictures brought back many memories.
The last set of pictures has a little story to it. We bought
FunSuch in February 1989 and moved her to Whitehall Creek in
Annapolis. Later that spring as we motored down the creek to
the Chesapeake Bay, we were hailed by an older gentleman who
was working on a trawler at his dock.
He admired our Nonsuch and we his trawler. This was how we met Capt. Frank O’Brien, US Navy, retired. If Capt. Frank
was at his dock, we would always pause and chat. If he was out cruising, we would usually hail each other and catch up over
the radio.
October of the following year, we had a strong front come through. We set a reef and blasted out of Whitehall on a stiff
northerly heading towards the Thomas Point Light. We noticed the trawler just to the west of us at the mouth of the Severn
River. Capt. Frank was just finishing with his boat when we came back up the creek that afternoon. He said he couldn’t
keep up with us. He was even more impressed when he learned I was at the helm, not Ed. (For those readers who have not
met me, I’m the size of a typical 10 or 11year old.). Over the winter Capt. Frank sent us this photo (See UPDATE Cover)
of FunSuch speeding away from him. The first spherized picture of FunSuch may be how we looked through binoculars that
day. The second one could be the impression we gave after we caught a puff.
The following spring we headed out the creek for our first sail. Capt. Frank’s trawler wasn’t at his dock. We didn’t think
too much about it, figuring he just might be getting a late start on the season. A few more weeks went by and still no
trawler. We guessed that he had given up boating; after all he was in in his 70’s. Then one weekend we saw a Nonsuch 30
at his dock; Capt. Frank was beaming when we approached. He told us he had been thinking about getting a Nonsuch for a
while. After seeing how easily FunSuch had handled the wind while out running his trawler, he decided that he had to have
one. So at an age when many boaters switch from sailboats to trawlers, Capt. Frank took the opposite route.
He sailed his Nonsuch well into his 80’s. He never installed a power winch. He often had midshipmen, whom he sponsored
at the Naval Academy, or grandchildren sailing with him. On many occasions we would meet up and sail alongside each
other. Except now it was us in our 26-footer working hard to catch up to him in his 30.

The Chesapeake Bay Nonsuch
Association (CBNA).....
.....cordially invites all interested INA members to attend our 2016 Fall rendezvous being
organized by the famous ‘Nonsuch Skippers of Solomons’ Maryland.
An historic waterfront town, Solomons is a located where the Patuxent River enters Chesapeake
Bay, about 1.5hrs south of Annapolis, Maryland by car and about the same distance from
Washington, DC.
Local CBNA skippers proclaim Solomons is home to the world’s largest fleet of Nonsuch 22s!
We actually do not know if that’s true but without a doubt Solomons offers a superb sailing
location, especially in early Fall and is the home port of many Nonsuches.

CBNA’s rendezvous is scheduled for
Friday, September 16 through Sunday,
September 18. Planning for the
rendezvous is in the early stages, but
events will likely include a pizza party
on Friday, a group dinner at a local
restaurant on Saturday and a luncheon
on Sunday. There will be informal
sailing events on both Saturday
and Sunday and general Nonsuch
camaraderie, fun and good times on all
3 days.
The main location will be at the
Solomons Harbor Marina, a part of
the Holiday Inn. For those coming
by boat, the marina has 18 slips
with electricity and 3 slips without
electricity available. In addition, there
is a well protected anchorage in front
of the marina. The hotel will offer
discounted room rates for individuals
who prefer to drive rather than sail
to the event. The Calvert Marine
Museum, with its screwpile lighthouse
and many fine exhibits, is a short 5
minute walk from the marina.
We hope you can join us and experience the beauty of the Chesapeake and the friendly

I can only assume that plenty of sailing has been achieved this season since copy has been thin on the ground for this
issue. Perhaps news of summer adventures will pour into my inbox ready for the next issue?
Our season came to an end with our final club race last weekend; it took place in the most weird weather conditions.
Local heavy sea mist nearly put us off starting at all but the forecast was for it to clear so off we went hardly able
to see our way into the River Parrott let alone the race marks! It did clear to some extent and the sun tried hard but
then, with the easterly wind off the land down came the mist again blowing from the Somerset levels.
Fortunately it eventually blew away and out came
the sun as we finished racing and returned back to

base. We disgraced ourselves by going gently aground
on a lee shore having misjudged the distance off in
the mist and with an increasingly unreliable depth
sounder; so from our usual position in the lead we
were disqualified for needing the engine to extricate
ourselves before being neaped with a falling tide.
The antique Stowe instruments are now top of the
maintenance list for replacement over the winter!
