Welcome
Parrot Heads
On behalf of the Parrot Heads of Puget Sound, the Laid Back Attack Planning Committee, and the Crowne Plaza Hotel, I would like to welcome you all to the “Emerald City” and the 12th Annual Laid Back Attack!!!
In keeping with Parrot Head tradition, Laid Back Attack is truly a
“Party with a Purpose”. All proceeds from this year’s event will go to
our charity partner, the USO Northwest.
During the course of Laid Back Attack, will we be doing a number of
added events such as a live and silent auction, a “Whine Wheel” and
“Heads or Tails” games. Proceeds from these activities will benefit the
USO and their efforts to provide support to our servicemen and
women as well as their families.
Over the past eleven years, Laid Back Attack has raised more than
$43,000 for our various charity partners. We could not have done
this without the support of numerous Parrot Heads like you. I know
we can count on you to continue this great tradition of generous
support in 2014.
We have a great musical line-up with artists coming from all over
the United States and Mexico. More than 25 hours of live Trop-Rock
music will be presented over the course of LBA’s three days. We ask
you to support these fabulous musicians by purchasing the CD’s and
various merchandise they will have for sale in the Summit Ballroom.
LBA could not happen without
the support of our many business
and individual sponsors who are
advertised in this program. Please
support our business sponsors
whenever possible.
Once again, thank you for attending
Laid Back Attack … we are glad you
have decided to join us … we are sure
you are going to have a “phabulous” time.
Cheers!!!

Laid Back Attack History
Held in July of each year, Laid Back Attack (LBA) has become the Parrot Heads of
Puget Sound’s largest single fund raising effort of the year and features some of the
finest Trop-Rock artists and bands from around the country.
LBA was the brainchild of PHoPS member Scott Solinsky, who wanted to put
together an event that would allow PHoPS the opportunity to bring great Trop-Rock
artists to the Northwest while giving PHoPS members the opportunity to live up to
our motto … “Party with a Purpose”. Eric Stone, Mark Mulligan, Scotty Bryan and
Dave Calhoun provided the live music for the first LBA which was held in 2003 at
the Kingston Cove Yacht Club in Kingston, WA. When the final numbers were
added up … $1,100 had been raised for the local food banks and an annual tradition
was born.
The Kingston Cove Yacht Club was the host and partner in presenting Laid Back
Attack for eight years. Each year a local charity or charities were selected to benefit
from the proceeds of LBA. During that time more than $18,000 was raised and
donated to local charities.
In 2011, LBA became a multi-day event that would draw Parrot Heads from other
parts of the country to Seattle. To accommodate the anticipated growth of a multiday event, LBA was moved in 2011 to Bremerton, WA and staged over two-days at
the South Pacific Bar & Grill.
A line-up that featured national Trop-Rock stars Bob Karwin, Mark Mulligan, Kelly
McGuire, Scott Kirby & Dave Edmisten, and Jerry Gontang & “Stars on the Water”
drew a capacity crowd. LBA 2011 was also a financial success raising more than
$8,000 for three local charities.
The success of LBA in 2011 forced the planning committee to seek an even larger
venue in 2012. The Silverdale Beach Hotel in Silverdale, WA was selected as the
site for LBA X. Nearly $11,000 was raised for the “Tall Elks Therapy Program for
Children” from the proceeds of LBA X.
Laid Back Attack was now on the national stage as a destination event for Parrot
Heads and musicians alike. The decision was made to maximize the potential of the
event and move LBA once and for all to a location that could accommodate growth
for years to come. That venue turned out to be the Sea-Tac Airport Holiday Inn
which hosted LBA 2013 in their fabulous 5,000 square-foot Summit Ballroom on the
12th floor of the hotel.
Although the site for LBA 2014 will be the same, the hotel itself has gone through a
major renovation and remodel, becoming the Crowne Plaza-Seattle Airport. One
other change for 2014 is the selection of the USO Northwest to be the benefitting
charity.
All totaled, the first 11 Laid Back Attack’s have raised more than $43,000 for local
charities … as good as that is, the best is yet to come!!
Lifting the Spirits
of America’s
Service
Members
&
Their
Families
The USO (United Service Organizations)
lifts the spirits of America’s troops and their
families millions of times each year at
hundreds of places worldwide. USO
Northwest continues that tradition today by
serving more than 540,000 military, their
families and veterans annually throughout
Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
They provide a touch of home through centers at Sea-Tac International Airport and
Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the USO Mobile
Canteen RV, and innovative programs
and services. They also provide critical support to those who need us the most,
including military deploying overseas and arriving home, military families, wounded
warriors and their families, and the families of the fallen.
USO Northwest is a private, nonprofit organization,
not a government agency. They
receive for government funds or grants and rely on the generosity of volunteers,
individual donors and corporate sponsors. The USO Northwest center at SeattleTacoma International Airport provides military personnel and their families with 24/7
travel assistance and access to all the comforts of home. Hot meals, snacks, a TV
lounge to rest and relax, a hot shower, free Internet access and other great amenities
are found here.
The center serves more than 120,000 US service men & women and their
families each year and the numbers are increasing each year. Because of that, the
3,400 square foot facility at SeaTac Airport has become overwhelmed. The USO is
currently in the midst of a major fundraising drive to secure funds to build a new
7,000 square foot facility at SeaTac Airport which is scheduled to open in 2014.
The USO Northwest needs our help to serve those who serve us. Every day our
service men and women are making remarkable sacrifices for the United States. The
USONW pledges to provide all the comforts of home to our service members and
their families, whether they need a free calling card, a care package with much
needed items, a cup of coffee, entertainment shows or a simple smile and hug.
All proceeds from Laid Back Attack 2014 will go to USO Northwest. The Parrot
Heads of Puget Sound take no monies from the event … 100% of the proceeds go
directly
to our charity partner … it is a “Party with a Purpose”.
Join us in this mission. To learn more about the USO Northwest, please visit

DON
MIDDLEBROOK
& The PEARL DIVERS DAVE
CALHOUN
Playing music, salmon fishing and sailing are the
favorite pastimes of Tacoma resident and PHoPS
member Dave Calhoun.
Starting in 1991, Don Middlebrook and Living

coast of Michigan with little idea of where it
His interest in music began at the age of nine
when he started taking piano lessons and playing
guitar. Looking back over those last thirteen years, eight
might lead. Always directed by a new song, a
new adventure, and an occasional cold beer, what
began as fun and frolic has turned into thirteen
years of travel and musical bliss.
CDs have been recorded and over 150 dates
In the 1970’s Dave was selling insurance by day and playing gigs as a solo artist at night. It
also was around this time that he really got into the music of Jimmy Buffett. He took a
management job where he was responsible for nine states. When his employer told him he
had to transfer to Chicago, he quit the job and moved to Orcus Island where he ran a burger
joint for 11 years, often playing Buffett CD’s on the outdoor deck.
In ’98 Dave moved back to Tacoma and soon had the itch to get back on stage. After
working six years at Harbor Yacht Sales he realized it was time to make the leap and dove
into his music fulltime. In 2006 he released his first CD “Love Dot Palm”. Since then, he has
released four more CD’s including his latest “Day Drinkin’.”
played
each year. Airplay has become common
place, like that found at WCSX FM in Detroit,
and internet web play has had international
activity.
While performing at Sloppy Joe's in Key West, Florida, Don and a friend thought that they
would take a moped ride around the island. What started out as an innocent joy ride soon
became a hunt to find Jimmy Buffett's house. Based on local information they had gathered,
they thought they were close, but were not convinced. That's when Don peeked into the
mailbox and spotted Jimmy Buffett's TV Guide. Contradictory stories exist as to what
happened next. Don wrote a song to apologize, claiming he found the TV Guide on the
ground. Witnesses say that he stole it out of the mailbox.
Years later Don recorded and toured with the most famous Coral Reefer of all, Greg
"Fingers"
Taylor. Greg claimed that Jimmy was aware of the theft and wanted his TV Guide
back.
Don's
song of apology claimed that he did not have it. Friends say it is in his house. No
charges against Don were ever filed and the existence and/or the whereabouts of the TV
Guide that inspired this song have never been validated.
Jimmy Buffett has since moved from
that home in Key West and now has a P.O. Box. As the song goes, you can always steal from
a pirate.

“Goodbye to Captain Tony,” Middlebrook’s anthem song for Key West’s annual Captain
Tony Days held in August, has recently been added to Pandora Radio’s rotation. Long-time
owner of the saloon with his name, Anthony “Capt. Tony” Tarracino was an early and longtime friend and supporter of Jimmy Buffett. Years later, that famous songwriter-singerguitarist wrote “Last Mango in Paris” as a tribute to his old friend Tony.
“Don writes songs about things that matter,” said Tarracino’s widow Marty. Middlebrook
recalls it was in the 1990s when “Captain Tony called me and said he was coming to Detroit
for a Jimmy Buffett show; he asked me if I would join him. I was flattered and reminded that
this legend was a legend because he was so real.”
Don’s most recent CD is entitled “The Key West Connection”. It’s partly a fundraiser for the
Key West
High School music department (the band and the choir are featured on the song
“Gypsy Wisdom”). It won an award for the song “Balmy Palms”, which by popular vote is
now the theme song for the retailer by the same name.
Don collaborated with a few famous characters on “The Key West Connection”. The cover
art is by Wyland, one of the world’s most famous marine life artists. Don’s quest to help the
local high school caught the ear of Lorain Hemingway (Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter)
and she offered to work with him in capturing the true spirit of Key West on “Gypsy
Wisdom”.

BRITTANY KINGERY
&
GAME
SIX
Brittany and her supporting cast, vocalist Derek Harris and vocalist-songwriter Rob Morgan
Hill of Game Six, had all adopted the Riviera Nayarit, a sunny coastal stretch North of Puerto
Vallarta, as a vacation home away from home, and had been performing periodically in the
area since the release of Game Six's 2009 recording "God, Love and Mexico". And not long
after the release of “Edge of the Ocean”, Brittany vowed she would no longer vacation in
Mexico and instead applied for a visa and became a legal resident.
Raised in the rural Washington town of McCleary, in Grays Harbor County, Brittany received
musical training as a child as a drummer but did not start singing publicly until adulthood.
After studying music and performance art at Grays Harbor Community College in Aberdeen,
she left home for New York City, where she completed her college education and musical
performance training at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Manhattan.
She is returning to the Northwest to debut her second CD tentatively titled “Blue”. Her
appearance at Laid Back Attack with Game Six will be her official CD release party for the
new album. “This will be the musical project of my life,” Brittany says. “It will be almost a
year from start to finish, and even though I will be in Mexico for a lot of that time, I’m much
more personally involved in the production decisions, the arrangements, and of course the
songwriting. I think it’s going to be something special.”
He is the writer of the #1 singles “Redneck
Yacht Club”, recorded by Craig Morgan, and
“Riding with Private Malone” recorded by
David Ball.
At least that’s what it has done for fans of “Trop Rock” music, the genre that Brittany says she
most closely identifies with. She says she’s sometimes referred to her music by that name, but
it was a term she and her bandmates thought they had made up just as a shorthand way of
ocean.
explaining what they do.
“I knew of course that Jimmy Buffett has a dedicated and kind of crazy following, but I did not
know that there was such a large community of people out there - beach bums and pirates and
surfers and Parrotheads - that listen to our kind of music,” she explains. Within weeks of the
album release, she was getting word that her songs were being added to playlists at Trop Rock
radio stations, and her first video from the CD, for the Mexico-inspired ballad “Treasures”, had
been viewed 10,000 times. Now there are several songs from the CD that are in regular rotation
on Trop Rock radio stations, and Brittany earned a Best Female Vocalist nomination from the
Trop Rock Music Association.
Most people are first introduced to Thom by
one of the long list of songs that he has
written, but were recorded and released by
other artists.
“For
me, Trop Rock is a blend of some combination of rock, country, reggae, island or Latin
music,” she says. “We do all of those things, sometimes all at once. But really, if the music
you
to a happy tropical place, it’s probably Trop Rock.” It wasn’t until after “Edge of the
takes
Ocean” started getting some attention in the trop rock community, Brittany recalls, that she
even knew that such a community was out there.
Thom Shepherd is an Austin-based touring
artist. His recent single "Simplify" was a top
10 on both the Texas Regional Radio Report
and the Texas Music Chart.
Not long ago, Brittany Kingery was living and
working
in the Pacific Northwest, only occasionally
slipping away from the office to wow audiences with
her incredible singing voice. That all changed with
release of “Edge of the Ocean” her debut solo
the
CD.
The beach-themed album will pick you up by your
ears and transport you to Mexico's Pacific coast for
an audio vacation with its tropical and Latin-flavored
acoustic sounds and its picturesque lyrics about life
at the edge of the ocean.
THOM SHEPHERD
He wrote the #1 Josh Abbott and Pat Green
single, “My Texas.” Kevin Fowler recorded
two of Thom’s songs, taking “Beer Season”
to #1 for three weeks and “Cheaper To Keep
Her” to #3 on the Texas Music Chart. He also wrote the GMA Canada Song and Video of the Year "A Father's Love (The Only
Way He Knew How)" and the title track of Tracy Lawrence’s Grammy nominated album
“The Rock”.
In total Thom has written over 15 radio singles and has had 100 of his songs recorded by
including
artists
Easton Corbin, Tracy Lawrence, Colt Ford, Bucky Covington, George Jones,
Pam Tillis, Lorrie Morgan, John Anderson, Trailer Choir, Montgomery Gentry, Buddy
Jewell, and Cledus T. Judd.
His music has taken him on 9 tours performing for our military in 17 different countries.
"As songwriters, we have no idea how our songs are going to affect people," says Thom, "I
met a soldier in Qatar who was on leave from Baghdad, and he told me he joined the military
because of Private Malone. He asked me how that made me feel and I said "Responsible!"
Then when we went to get our picture taken, he showed me the shattered LCD screen of his
digital camera - shattered because it was in his shirt pocket behind his flack jacket when he
took a round from an AK47. That camera saved his life. That is powerful stuff."
He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and spent his high school and college years in Stephens
City, Virginia. He is a graduate of George Mason University with a Film and television
degree. He has written for 5 different music publishers in Nashville.
He is a two time cancer survivor, a father of two, and co-owner of RedneckYachtClub.com, a
website that sells merchandise relating to the song and the boating lifestyle.
After years of living in Nashville, Thom relocated to Texas in 2011 to pursue a full time
touring career. “I’ve always written songs so that I could perform them live on stage,” he
says. “It’s always exciting when someone else records one of my songs, but there is no
greater feeling than connecting with an audience.”
His latest CD is a duet project with Coley McCabe called “I’m With U”.

MITCHELL
Gene,
an honorary member of the Parrot Heads of
Puget Sound, returns to the Northwest to perform at
Laid Back Attack for the very first time.
He was born and raised in a harbor town on the
southeast coast where he began writing and
performing
music. He served our country in the
United States Navy for 21 years and was decorated
with
the Meritorious Service Medal from the
President of the United States among other Medals
from the Secretary of the Navy.
He continued his songwriting and performing while
in the Navy, and earned two college degrees with
honors.
During his 21 years in the Navy Gene wrote and produced songs about sailing and adventures
in more than 30 countries he visited. Though his music still maintains that southern style, his
years in Hawaii, the South Pacific and the Caribbean strongly influence his jazzy island styles.
While stationed in the Puget Sound area, Gene was a regular performer at Parrot Heads of
Puget Sound events, thusly earning his honorary membership in the club.
has continued to write since becoming a full time musician and has released 12 high
Gene
quality full length CDs of original music, including a full length Christmas CDs. Gene's CDs
top
musicians and recording engineers in the industry with the result being the finest
feature
recording and production. Two of Gene's CDs feature artwork by world famous Florida artist
Paul Brent.
His 12th CD is titled “Tropical Country” and it combines
a bit of country and country-rock with
his well known jazzy style of tropical music.
"Recalling my childhood, when songs about the beach were primarily in the Pop Music market,
The Beach Boys were filling the charts with songs of life in the sun, on the beach, and of
course, with all their surf songs,” he said. “Even into the 1980's, it was still pop music bringing
the tropics back with The Beach Boys singing Kokomo.”
“Then in the late 1990's, it seemed that a volcano of tropical and beach theme songs began to
pour out of Nashville. It is with these thoughts that I came up with the title of the CD “Tropical
Country”, taking a unique opportunity to write and produce a CD with lyrics about romance on the beach and in the islands, while including some country and country-rock songs. It’s a
combination that can only be classified as tropical country."
Gene's music has been featured on ABC, Fox and MSNBC and Gene was the featured headline
entertainer for the 2007 Capital One Bowl College Championship game, viewed by 17 million
and a live audience of over 65,000.
He has recorded with some of the best musicians in the industry and you will find them all on
his CDs of original music. Members from Kenny G's band, Jimmy Buffett's Band, George
Strait's band and members who have played with everyone from Dolly Parton to Garth Brooks.
Expect professional production and arrangements on all Gene's CDs.
Currently Gene has over 100 published songs. He resides in panhandle of Florida’s Gulf Coast
and continues to be a regular performer at Margaritaville in Panama City.
