The Manager

After two long trips up and down the
country in the past seven days, it’s
great to be back at the John Smith’s
this afternoon!
I’d like to start by thanking
the supporters who made the
marathon journeys to support
the team at Cardiff and Charlton;
your support is appreciated by
everyone. There were some
great scenes at the end of
90 minutes at the Valley
on Tuesday as the squad
and Town fans celebrated
together; ones I hope to see
repeated again and again this
season.
There’s no doubt about
it; the midweek win was a
long time coming for us.
We’ve played pretty well in a
number of games this season
and have been pretty close
to getting the win before,
but as anyone will tell you
the margins are fine in the
Championship.
It has been a tough start to
the season due to a number
of factors, but our new players
are starting to gel with their
teammates – thanks in no
small part to the time we
enjoyed away with each other
down south between our last
two games – and the win on
Tuesday will do wonders for
our confidence coming into
this afternoon’s match.
Our new loanees – Jed
Steer, Elliott Ward, Mustapha
Carayol, Emyr Huws and
Jamie Paterson – have all
added quality to our First
Team and have brought real
options and competition for
places. All five have already
made an impact out on the
pitch for us and I’m excited
that many of our fans will get
to see them in action for the
first time this afternoon.
I’ve always kept my belief
that this group of players
can do it and I’ve shown
them I think that again and
again, so it was great to see
everything come together at
Charlton. Now that we have
finally secured that win, our
standards have been set.
Today we take on Bolton
Wanderers and I would like
to welcome Manager Neil
Lennon and his staff to our
Stadium for the game. The
Trotters will have their own
aims and goals this afternoon,
but we are completely
focused on following up our
first victory with another win;
our first on home soil.
The Stadium was
absolutely rocking during our
last home game against QPR
last time out here, which
feels like a long time ago
now. Please try and reach
those levels again today!

hoyle
It’s 12.24am on Wednesday morning as
I write; I’m due in at Doncaster train
station at 1.15am, so this seemed
like a good opportunity to get my
programme notes done!
The journey home feels a lot
quicker after our first win of the
season at Charlton, although this
carriage is so bumpy we must
have a flat tyre. The victory has
lifted the spirits so much that I
think I’ve even seen a ‘Hoyle In’
thread on ‘Down at the Mac’!
In all seriousness, it has
been a tough few weeks for
everybody at the football club.
After the sales of Conor
Coady and Alex Smithies,
we wanted to keep Jacob
Butterfield at the Club. We
turned down four bids from
Derby County, but in the end
we were offered a deal we
couldn’t turn down; one that
represents the second highest
sum this Club has ever received
for a player, after the Jordan
Rhodes transfer to Blackburn.
Derby were desperate to secure
Jacob on the final day and they
had to pay top dollar to get the
deal done.
Subsequently, we’ve
allowed Chris Powell to bring
in loan players of his choice
to improve the starting line-up
and the squad. I’ve already
said money from the Alex
Smithies transfer would be
reinvested in the squad and
that money is still available, but
we didn’t feel the players we
could have brought in during
the window would have added
the right value to the team.
We all know that you have to
spend wisely for the long term.
Even though it goes without
saying, I want to reaffirm that
my commitment to the Club
is unwavering, contrary to lots
of unsubstantiated rumours I
have seen.
Tuesday night’s result at
Charlton was great. I’m sure that
not many people expected us
to get a result at the Valley, but
as a team we were organised
throughout after a terrific
start, when we showed lots
of attacking intent on the front
foot. We defended admirably
when needed too, led by our
new loan signing Elliott Ward. I
was particularly pleased to see
Academy prospect Philip Billing
play his part in the win too.
Today we must look to
carry on the momentum
of midweek against Bolton
Wanderers as we target a first
home win of the campaign.
To do that, we must be on the
front foot once again; that’s
when we are at our best.
A final few words
for our fans.
Firstly, I would like to thank
our supporters who made the
long journeys to Cardiff and
Charlton over the last week.
Four to five hours there and
back to those two venues are
arduous trips, as I know!
As for our home fans, I
believe the supporters in the
South Stand made a huge
difference to the atmosphere
last time out here against
QPR; it was magnificent to see
and hear. Let’s have more of
the same today please!
Onwards and upwards!

It’s so far, so good at Huddersfield
Town for loanee Jed Steer.
The 22 year-old goalkeeper
joined ‘The Yorkshire Club’ on
loan from Premier League Aston
Villa just over a week ago due to
an injury to first choice stopper
Joe Murphy and has impressed
on the pitch in his first two
appearances, looking an assured
figure between the sticks.
“So far it’s been great! We
have a great bunch of lads
here - everyone gets on well –
and I think we’ve put two good
performances in at Cardiff and
Charlton,” Jed told GUAH on
Wednesday.
“At Cardiff I thought we
played really well for 65
minutes and it was a brilliant
performance again on
Tuesday night; we showed
real togetherness and dug
deep to grind out a result in
the second half.”
8
www.htafc.com
Chris Powell’s squad
stayed down south between
Saturday and Tuesday’s
matches and Jed admitted
that had the added bonus of
helping him settle into his new
surroundings.
He continued: “We were
together 24/7, sharing rooms,
eating together and training.
We went for a meal as a team
on the Sunday night and it
was really good for me to sit
down and get to know people.
“I can tell we have a very
close group; everyone gets
on really well, like a team
should. When I arrived, I didn’t
realise some of the other boys
were on loan given how close
everyone was! When I found
out, I was honestly shocked.”
Jed explained that, on the
evidence he has seen in
games and training, he was
equally shocked that it took
the team seven games to
record a first victory.
“It’s a very talented group
here and by the sounds of
things, things just didn’t go our
way in the first few games.
The performances have been
there or there about, like in the
last two games.
“We can build on the
Charlton win now and take
confidence into Saturday. The
fans were fantastic; they didn’t
stop singing behind my goal
in the first half and that drove
us forward, helping us get the
result we got.”
Most of Steer’s first team
experience has come through
previous loan spells at
Yeovil Town and Doncaster
Rovers, with his current spell
with the Terriers a first at
Championship level.
“It’s a lot quicker than
League 1 – that’s the biggest
difference – and there is more
quality in front of goal and
around the box. Teams in this
division are looking to play
football. Even though Charlton
had a big guy up front, they
still tried to play the ball in and
around the box with a lot of
short, sharp passing. It’s a
very competitive league.”
He endured a baptism of
fire at the Cardiff City Stadium
last weekend; his first task
in Town colours was to keep
Kenwyne Jones’ effort out

after the striker broke clear
inside the third minute!
“If anything, I was actually
quite pleased!” Jed laughed.
“It got me an early touch on
the ball with the save, which is
always nice. It gave me a bit
more confidence and got me
into the game nice and early.”
Jed has recently formed
part of a new look defensive
unit, with Joel Lynch the only
survivor from last season
across the back line.
The goalkeeper added:
“We always talk about the
back five with the Manager,
because we’re a unit. Our
job is to keep the ball out of
the back of our net first and
foremost. Unfortunately I’ve
not managed to keep a clean
sheet yet, but I think overall we
have been solid. Long may
that continue.”
After two long away trips,
Jed is now looking forward
to a first home appearance
in the Club’s colours against
Bolton today:
“I’ve never been to the John
Smith’s Stadium, so I’m really
looking forward to playing
there. I’ve seen pictures and it
looks fantastic.
“Playing at home in front
of our fans will be great and
hopefully we can get the result
we want. Tuesday night was
brilliant, but now we need to
build on that and kick on to
really get the season firing.
Saturday is a great opportunity
to do that.
“It will be a tough game, but
we’re going into the game full
of confidence.”
He’s hoping that the
experience of playing for
Town will stand him in good
stead when he returns to his
top flight parent side, who he
joined from his hometown
club Norwich City in 2013.
“I want to keep my
performance levels up so I
can keep playing games here.
It’s great to be out on the
pitch getting the experience
and hopefully it will help me
get closer to the First Team
at Aston Villa when I do
return there. I want to keep
improving at this stage of my
career.
“I’ve really enjoyed my
time at Villa. The move
from Norwich took me from
one Premier League club
to another, but I’d worked
with Paul Lambert – he gave
me my Norwich debut and
believed in me – and when
he made the move and the
opportunity came up to follow,
I took it.
“It’s been really good. I’ve
worked with Brad Guzan and
Shay Given and I’ve really
enjoyed my work with the
goalkeeping coach, Tony
Parkes. I feel like my game has
improved over the last couple
of years, which is great.
“For now though, I’m
really enjoying working with
Nick (Colgan, Town’s Head
of Goalkeeping) and I’m a
Huddersfield Town player. I
was absolutely over the moon
with the win on Tuesday night
and all I’m thinking about at the
moment is keeping the ball out
of Huddersfield Town’s net.”

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 4-1 BOLTON WANDERERS
27 August 1928
Having opened the new
First Division season with
a 1-0 defeat at Portsmouth
two days earlier, boss Jack
Chaplin’s Town team bounced
back to form with a decisive
home victory over Bolton in
this Monday evening kickoff. The Trotters, managed
by Charles Foweraker, had
also opened the campaign
with a defeat losing 3-2 to
reigning champions Everton
at Burnden Park. Pouring rain
kept the attendance down to
a modest 15,710 spectators
who saw the notoriously heavy
Leeds Road pitch soon begin
to churn up.
Huddersfield, who had
finished the previous season
as Football League runnersup, were looking to mount
a new title challenge, whilst
Bolton were hoping to improve
on a final placing of seventh
and maintain their place as
one of the country’s top clubs.
Dai Evans, a summer signing
from Reading, was making
his Town debut, and the game
was refereed by Mr H Kilsby
of West Bromwich.
TOWN: Hughie Turner; Roy
Goodall, Sam Wadsworth;

BOLTON: Dick Pym; Harold

It soon became apparent
that the wet conditions
would make the ball hard
to control, but Town took
the lead in the seventh
minute with a trademark Roy
Goodall penalty after Harold
Howarth was adjudged to
have handled. Bolton though
quickly hit back to equalise
with a fine solo effort from
‘Spud’ Murphy who jinked
his way through the home
defence before scoring.
This only seemed to rouse
Bob Kelly cheekily headed the ball out of Dick Pym’s hands to give
Town a 3-1 lead!
HI STO RY
Bob Kelly narrowly missing
the target. Numerous other
chances went begging
before Smith rounded off the
scoring in the 75th minute
with a thumping long range
drive. With Goodall, Sam
Wadsworth and Welsh
international Evans taking
care of any Bolton forays, the
game ended in a comfortable
if muddy Huddersfield victory.
Huddersfield penalty expert Roy
Goodall gave his team an early
lead against Bolton.
Bolton goalkeeper Dick ‘Pincher’ Pym was at fault for two of Town’s
goals. He had joined Bolton from Exeter City for £5000 in 1921 with
the money helping the Devon club to purchase its home ground. Dick
played 336 games for Wanderers, and was to win the FA Cup with them
three times over the next decade, as well as gaining three England
caps.
Huddersfield who immediately
went on the attack, netting
twice more to give themselves
a comfortable half time lead.
Firstly Harry Raw seized on
an error by Dick Pym to roll
the ball home, then Bob Kelly
further embarrassed the
England ‘keeper with a goal
that might well be disallowed
in the modern era. As Pym
was about to clear the ball upfield, the quick-thinking insideright dashed in to head it out
of his hands and into the net!
After the break Bolton
improved somewhat in the
deteriorating conditions, but
Town continued to press
forward with Billy Smith and
Harr y Raw
seized on a
goalkeeping
error for
Town’s
second goal.

jamie
paterson
Jamie Paterson has enjoyed his first two
weeks as a Huddersfield Town player and is
keen to show the Club’s fans exactly what
he is capable of as soon as possible.
Obviously some teams don’t
use that position and have
accommodated me by letting
me float in from the left, so I
feel like I can play across those
positions. I’m definitely not an
out-and-out winger though;
today’s position is my best,
even though it’s the first time
I’ve played there in a while. “I feel like if I get fit, a bit
sharper and a bit more
confident, I can score goals; I
just need a few games under
my belt.”
The 23 year-old has fitted
straight into the Town squad
since arriving from Nottingham
Forest on a season-long loan
during the recent international
break, which he credits his
new teammates for.
“The lads have been great
with me since I arrived and I
like the atmosphere around
the Club; it’s really relaxed,
which comes from the staff.
That has helped me get out
on the pitch. Now, I hope to
show the fans what I can do. “I’m enjoying it so far.
We stayed down south
last weekend between the
Cardiff and Charlton games
and that gave me the
chance to get to know a few
of the lads a bit more.
“I had a good
season when I first
went to Nottingham,
but obviously last
season wasn’t great
for me; for whatever
reason, it didn’t work out
for me at Forest. At Cardiff
it was really good for me to
get a game under my belt,
because I haven’t played
many in the past 12 months.”
Jamie has also been
delighted to play as a
number 10 in Town’s 4-23-1 formation; his preferred
position, as he explained: “As a youngster, I played
as a number 10 and I feel
that is my best position.

Harry Bunn played as big
a part as anyone in Town
securing a first win of
the season at Charlton on
Tuesday night.
“It was nice to get the three points,
but now we have to kick on and
follow it up against Bolton”
The 22 year-old netted his first
goal of the season to set the
Terriers on their way to a 2-1 win
at the Valley and after the game,
Harry admitted that the victory
was more than welcome.
“We’d been waiting quite
a while for that first win,
especially when you include
the international break after the
Fulham game. It should have
come at Craven Cottage, but
obviously it just got away from
us at the end of that game.
“We all knew that the win
would come as we’ve been
working hard in training. It
always felt like it would come.
“It’s always nice to win away
from home, but it was even
better for the Manager that it
came at Charlton and I think the
lads had that in the back of our
minds. We wanted to win the
game for him and Alex Dyer.”
On his goal, Bunn added:
“It was quite a similar feeling
to the win in that it was nice
to get off the mark. Hopefully
there are a lot more to come!”
Chris Powell has shown a lot
of faith in the attacker, keeping
him in the starting XI for the last
two games despite the recent
arrivals of players like Mustapha
Carayol and Jamie Paterson.
Harry continued: “It’s
obviously nice to keep my
place, as they are two players
with good quality. That
competition is just what you
need in the Championship,
because as everyone knows
it is a long season with a lot of
games. I’m sure there will be
times when some players miss
out and then they are back in
when the next game comes.”
Now the former Manchester
City Academy player is
adamant the side must kick
on from Tuesday night’s
success against Bolton today:
“It was nice to get the three
points, but now we have to
kick on and follow it up against
Bolton. That win should kickstart our season now.
“The win at Charlton
probably won’t mean much
to us if we don’t back it up
against Bolton. I think both
sides will look at Saturday’s
game as a winnable one, as
they haven’t had a great start
either. We go into the game
looking for all three points.
“A couple of wins on the
bounce will see us shoot up
the table, which pretty much
sums this league up. It is in
our hands to get the win.”

BOLTON
WANDERERS
Today’s opponents Bolton
Wanderers received a timely
boost just last weekend, with
Neil Lennon’s side recording
a first win in five months
courtesy of a 2-1 home scoreline against visitors Wolves.
“It was a relief,” Manager Neil
Lennon said of the win when
speaking to the Bolton News
post-match.
“We now have six points
from six games, whereas
when I came in last season we
had five points from 11. That’s
progress. We are far, far from
the finished article. But there is
a real spirit there.
“It’s a relief. You start doubting
yourself, wondering if you can
manage at this level, but the
30
www.htafc.com
way we played first half and
counter attacked in the second
half, it was very pleasing.”
Before that win the five
month, 11 game winless
streak stretched back to Easter
Monday 2015, but Bolton could
arrive here today on the back of
another victory dependent on
Tuesday night’s result against
Sheffield Wednesday at the
Macron Stadium.
Ahead of that game, Lennon
added Steve Walford - a coach
during the Manager’s time at
Celtic - to his Bolton staff as
Assistant Manager on Monday
after previous incumbent Johan
Mjallby returned to Sweden for
family reasons.
Bolton undertook a big
turnover of players during the
summer transfer window.
Incomings included
goalkeeper Ben Amos from
Manchester United; striker Gary
Madine following his release
from Sheffield Wednesday;
Stephen Dobbie came in
from Crystal Palace; Lawrie
Wilson arrived from Charlton
Athletic. From further afield,
Derik Odense joined from Real
Madrid; Francesco Pisano from
Cagliari, Jose Casado from
Malaga and centre back Prince
came in on loan from Italian
side Atalanta.
On the flip side, Jermaine
Beckford was allowed to join
Preston North End; goalkeeper
Adam Bogdan joined Liverpool;
high earning centre back Matt
Mills moved to Nottingham
Forest; Alex Baptiste joined
Middlesbrough; Tim Ream left
to join Fulham; striker Craig
Davies is now at Wigan Athletic
and Marc Tierney and Eidur
Gudjohnsen were released.
Goals had been a little hard
to come by for Lennon’s men
ahead of last weekend’s win.
A goalless home draw against
Derby County kicked off the
season, soon followed by a
1-0 Capital One Cup defeat
at the hands of Burton Albion.
3-0 and 1-0 losses at Boro and
MK Dons followed before a 1-1
draw with Nottingham Forest
and goalless stalemate with
Blackburn Rovers.

Neil Lennon is one of several
managers in the Sky Bet
Championship currently embarking
upon his first full season in the
division, having taken charge of
Bolton Wanderers in October 2014.
The Northern Irishman signed
a four year contract at the
Macron Stadium after taking
over the reins from Dougie
Freedman.
He arrived five months after
leaving his first managerial
job at Scottish giants Celtic,
where he had spent four
seasons and guided the
Hoops to three successive
Premier League titles, as
well as two Scottish Cups
and a couple of impressive
Champions League runs.
As a player, the 44 yearold was similarly decorated.
Born in Lurgan, he came to
England to join Manchester
City’s Academy after a
handful of appearances
for Glenavon. He went on
to make one First Team
appearance for the Club, but
it was at Crewe Alexandra
where he made his name.
After joining the
Railwaymen in 1990, he soon
established himself in midfield
and made 187 appearances
for the Club – becoming their
first full international in over
60 years upon his Northern
Ireland debut in 1994.
Lennon earned a move
to Leicester City in 1996
and helped the team win
promotion to the Premier
League in his first season at
the Club. Neil also won two
League Cups with the Foxes.
In 2000 he joined Celtic as a
player under Martin O’Neill in
a move reported to be worth
£5.75 million. Lennon enjoyed
more first season success at
a new club, helping the side to
a domestic treble. In the next
four seasons, he won another
two leagues and Scottish
Cups and reached the UEFA
Cup Final in 2003. He went on
to captain the side from 2005.
After a number of other
domestic accolades, Lennon
moved back to England to
join Nottingham Forest in
2007 before enjoying a short
spell at Wycombe Wanderers
from January 2008.
Neil’s coaching career
began at Celtic in 2008,
where he took up the roles
of First Team Coach and
Reserve Team Manager
before taking over as
First Team Manager from
Tony Mowbray – initially
as caretaker but then
permanently – in March 2010.

MARK DAVIES
Midfielder Mark Davies arrives
at the John Smith’s Stadium
today with the praise of his
Manager, Neil Lennon, ringing
in his ears following his
performance in Bolton’s 2-1 win
over Wolves last weekend.
Lennon told the Bolton
News: “Mark Davies has
been outstanding. Right at this
minute I think he’s one of the
best players in this division. He
was a real driving force against
Blackburn Rovers. He’s only
a little fella but he was
so strong and even
though the ball was up
in the air all the time,
he was in there for us.”
The 27 year-old
has always had an
abundance of talent,
only for a series of
unfortunate injuries to
curtail his progress
during his career.
He joined the Wolves
Academy as a nine
year-old and broke into
the team under Glenn Hoddle
in 2005, but missed the first
half of 2006/07 and the entirety
of 2007/08 through injury.
Due to a lack of regular First
Team football, he joined then
Premier League side Bolton
in late January 2009, ending
his decade at Molineux. Since
then he has made 117 starts
and 52 substitute appearances
across the top two divisions,
scoring 16 goals. That includes
another cumulative 16 month
spell on the sidelines.
NEIL DANNS
Another midfielder, Danns is
a familiar name to Town fans
courtesy of his half-season loan
spell as a Terrier in early 2013.
A powerful player with plenty
of experience, Neil scored his
first goal for Town in the 2-1
West Yorkshire derby win at
Leeds United on 16
March 2013.
The 32 year-old had
two subsequent loan
spells at Bolton in the
2013/14 season and
went on to join the
Trotters permanently
from Leicester City
ahead of the following
season.
Prior to that move,
the Liverpool-born
Guyana international
started his career at
Blackburn Rovers but
played his first regular
First Team football at
Colchester United,
who he joined in 2004 after a
loan spell.
His form earned him a move
to Birmingham City in 2006,
but it was at Crystal Palace
that Neil really made his name
two years later; he signed
for the Eagles for an initial
£600,000, where he played in
the Premier League.
Neil joined Leicester City in
2011, but had four separate
loan spells during his time at
the King Power Stadium.

BEN AMOS
Now 25 years old, Ben Amos
joined Bolton Wanderers on
a four year contract in July
2015 after his release from
Manchester United.
The 6’ 3” tall custodian
was born in Macclesfield and
started his career as a player
in Crewe Alexandra’s youth
Academy, but moved to Old
Trafford at just 11 years old
after being released by the
Railwaymen.
Amos made his way
through the ranks for the
Red Devils, being capped by
England at every age group
between under 16 and under
21 inclusive along the way.
His first experience with
the senior squad came
during a pre-season tour
of South Africa in 2008,
where he made his unofficial
First Team bow as a late
replacement for Tomasz
Kuszczak in a friendly
against Portsmouth in
Nigeria. His competitive
debut soon followed in
September in a 3-1 home
win over Middlesbrough in
the League Cup.
Two loan spells followed
in the 2009/10 campaign,
with a one game stint at
Peterborough United closely
followed by a longer spell at
Norwegian side Molde FK.
Further loan spells
followed at Oldham
Athletic, Hull City, Carlisle
United and Bolton ahead
of his permanent move this
summer.
