Familyspotlight The Unkraut Family By the Unkraut family, residents of Triple Crown We are pleased to introduce our family to you: Bill, Allison, Kayla, and KiKi Unkraut. We have been married almost 11 years and have two wonderful children. Kayla is 7 years old and attends first grade at Villa Madonna Academy. KiKi is 5½ and is in kindergarten at Villa as well. Bill is currently employed by Fidelity Investments. He is a senior account executive in the Private Client Group. He has worked for Fidelity for the past 17 years. Allison is a vice president of client leadership at dunnhumbyUSA, where she has worked for almost eight years. Prior to joining dunnhumbyUSA, Allison worked at Provident Bank for over eight years where she held a variety of positions in finance, retail and marketing. We have lived in Triple Crown since December 2009. Prior to moving to Triple Crown, we lived in Hebron, KY for seven years and on the west side of Cincinnati for almost two years. We built our house in Triple Crown as we loved the neighborhood and wanted a big yard for our children. Since moving into Triple Crown, we have made many new friends. We feel lucky to be surrounded by great neighbors, and we are enjoying establishing new traditions like fireworks on the 3rd of July and Labor Day weekend gatherings. Our circle of friends has grown tremendously since moving into the neighborhood, and we love meeting new neighbors through various activities and get-togethers. Our family is very active, and we enjoy being outside as much as possible. Kayla and KiKi both play soccer with the Boone County Youth Soccer Association. In addition, both girls have been taking skiing lessons at Perfect North since they were 4 years old. Kayla also plays indoor soccer and baseball while KiKi enjoys dancing and singing. Both girls have also inherited a passion for golf – one they picked up from their Dad, who has been playing golf since he was a kid. If the weather is nice, you will most likely see our family outside playing in the yard or taking a golf cart ride through the neighborhood. As the girls get older, they will have many opportunities to get exposed to new sports and activities through Villa Madonna Academy. get to enjoy the beach and ocean while reconnecting to our special family members living in that area. Our family also enjoys traveling. A favorite destination of our family is Fort Walton Beach, FL, where we love the beautiful Emerald Coast. We are lucky that we have family in the area, so we Overall, we feel extremely lucky to live in such a beautiful neighborhood. We couldn’t be happier living in Triple Crown, and we look forward to our children growing up in this great area. 10 NeighborhoodNews Triple Crown Life November November Triple Crown Life NeighborhoodNews 11 Robin, Shawn, Jordan and Becca Dailey helping residents unload their vehicles. The Little Red School House Interview With Resident Owner: Jan Malley The Little Red School House has always taken learning to a higher level for students. This philosophy of education began in 1975 when they started teaching advanced phonics and reading as the basis of their curriculum. cultural aspects of the country of Spain as well. This is accomplished through activities such as by providing Spanish foods, music, clothing, and games which give the students an opportunity to learn and understand the cultural aspects of Spain. In 1988 Spanish classes were added to the curriculum for all kindergarten students. The Spanish classes have been taught by charismatic Spanish teacher Inez Ariaz since 1998. Inez was born in Spain, grew up, and was educated there. She brings a plethora of first-hand knowledge of Spain and the language. The students learn to speak conversational Spanish and are introduced to the This year the Little Red School House has added violin classes, which are being taught by Madina Akhatova. She has studied and played the violin since the age of six while growing up in both Russia and Uzbekistan. In 2008 Madina received a full scholarship from Northern Kentucky University and graduated this past spring with honors. Madina participated in the Kentucky music educators associa- 17 tion from 2010-2011. She was also the principal violinist for the Chamber and Philharmonic Orchestras. Children can begin lessons as young as age three. They are taught in small classes of two to four students. They learn through games, songs and rhymes. This fun learning environment attracts all students who are charmed by the violin and Madina. These young violinists recently hosted a concert for their family and friends. The lessons are a huge hit and are continuing this fall. At the Little Red School House parents can see the difference a child-geared curriculum and motivated teachers can make. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” -- Audrey Hepburn Barbie Team! At some point it became very unfashionable to raise daughters or become women who admittedly embrace the one and only Audrey Hepburn’s most quotable quote. Whether it was the retail industry, the film industry, or the music industry, one can only guess; but our girls have been coaxed into growing up too fast and shedding our inner girly-ness. With that, we are also losing a common sisterhood far too young. The ability to cheer on, or encourage and congratulate our fellow females is dwindling at an all too early age. Please do not argue competitiveness, because there is nothing I love more than a gal with ambition and drive! No, this is serious girls! These reasons alone were the driving force of creating our Barbie event. Like Miss Audrey, (upon whom was bestowed the honor of becoming immortalized as an entire line of collector Barbies) I decided that I would not get down about this fact; I would do something about it! That’s when I enlisted all of the wonderful ladies I knew in Kindervelt 55. Jennifer Oney Hill and daughter, Julia Jolee Gust and Paige bask in the pinkness of it all! When trying to send a message this adult and complicated to those 12 and under, one must be very particularly choosey as to whom they select to deliver it. Could we have done any better than our own Triple Crown resident, Kindervelt 55 member and assistant superintendant of Boone County Schools Karen Chesser Richards? No, I think not! In a stylishly fitted black lace overlay cocktail dress, and perfectly tousled blonde locks (yes, it’s important), Karen strutted up to our pink feathered podium and worked some amazing girl power magic! Armed with only a bag of props and her own 1992 gymnastics Barbie, ok and her long list of degrees and credentials, she had the crowd of almost 150 ladies and little ladies, captivated. Karen perfectly captured the message we wanted to send to our guests: you are never too old to play with or collect Barbies, Barbie has many friends and she does that by being a good friend to others, finally, with confidence, kindness and drive you can be anything...just like Barbie! provided our rockin’ Barbie beats for our rad runway show. Mike Palmer generously donated Barbie toothbrushes to each swag bag. Jennifer Oney-Hill, Little Red School House, Scentsy, Goddard School, Triple Crown Hat Co, Applied Behavioral Services, the Tackett family, Eden Salon and Spa, the Reynolds family, the Browning family, Jolee Alex Gust, and Lancôme Dillard’s, all donated great little goodie bags and baubles to our swanky swag bags! Eden Salon and Spa spiffed up hair dos with curls and coiffures with amazing and dedicated talent. Lancôme Dillard’s perfected pink pouts and cheeks, while Little Red School house polished every delicate finger! It’s important to pass along that we do not sit and play with Barbies at this event. Nope! We get beautified, polished, sip in the Barbie display of many years of Barbies, and take a swaggering strut down our “Fancy Frocks Runway.” We also make time to shop the wonderful auction items provided by Kindervelt members, and delve into tasty treats! September 9th, 2012 marked the 2nd Annual Barbie Soiree hosted at Triple Crown Country Club by the ladies of Kindervelt 55 to benefit Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and their new four-year commitment to THE HEART INSTITUTE. If this event sounds like something you or a sassy little sweetie you know would be interested in, don’t worry! We will be pinking it up at the club again next year. For anyone that loves to be pampered, primped, fussed over and likes to be sprinkled with sparkly girl power glitter, this is your event! My little doll, Aris, is still all aglow with pink power! Which only leaves one question...do you believe in pink? It takes a lot of community effort to create such a wonderful event. We always ask our guests to thank our sponsors and supporters by their patronage. Wouldn’t you know it, a lot of them happen to be Triple Crown residents! Even when all three of us were home together, our house seemed so empty without him. As much as we love animals, we just weren’t sure if we’d ever be ready to open ourselves up to that kind of heartbreak again. Fortunately, Emery was persistent in expressing her strong desire to get another dog. She independently went to work researching breeds of all shapes and sizes, and finally asked that we get a soft-coated wheaten terrier puppy for her 11th birthday. We all weighed in on the idea, then put the issue to a family vote. The official results were 2-1, with the ladies in the house giving the edge to a new addition to the family. That’s how Ozzie “Blue” Nelson came to be a member of our family in April 2011. As soon as we welcomed Ozzie into our lives, the three of us were in unanimous agreement --- Emery’s 11th birthday present was a gift our entire family loved and would treasure! It’s a November Triple Crown Life good thing that it was love at first sight, because Ozzie certainly was a typical, mischievous puppy. He was quick to ignore his basket full of toys in favor of other household items. When we weren’t looking, he loved to chew up shoes, gnaw on the corners of rugs, and swipe anything else he found lying around on the floor. He’s outgrown most of those puppy pranks and is now just a great companion. Ozzie loves to go on long walks, play fetch, and hide and seek. He’s a very family-oriented dog who’s never quite satisfied until he’s rounded up everyone in the house and we’re all together in one room. Ozzie constantly reminds the three us why dogs are so easy to fall in love with, how quickly a new puppy can become a part of the fabric of our family, and that the inevitable heartache that comes at the end of a dog’s life is a small price to pay for all the love and joy that they bring us during their lifetime. I am in the eighth grade at Gray Middle School. I have a younger brother, Ryan, who is in the sixth grade at Gray Middle School. I have two cats and two goldfish. Last November we moved from Cumming, Georgia, which is just north of Atlanta, to Kentucky. Our furniture and boxes arrived the day before Thanksgiving. It was hard to move and leave all my friends whom I’ve known since kindergarten. Not only that, my brother and I were disappointed that there weren’t any snow days last winter and we really hope that there is snow this year so school is canceled for at least one day. I joined a volleyball team this year and I really like it. I played at my old school in Georgia, but they didn’t have a team. When, I was little I played soccer and horseback riding but I knew I didn’t want to be doing that for the rest of my life. I am a huge animal lover, and would like to volunteer at an animal shelter next year. My other passion is art and painting. All the pictures in my room I have painted. My favorite place to vacation is the beach. I like to snorkel; there was one time we came across a family of sea turtles. My dream is to swim with dolphins. My favorite band is One Direction and I am going to their concert next summer in Louisville; can’t wait! I also babysit and am Red Cross certified. With two uncles that were both basketball coaches, I grew up in gymnasiums all over Illinois and developed a true love for the sport. While playing basketball in college I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in fitness. After receiving my bachelor’s degree, I began working as a fitness director at a junior college. This is where I started teaching group fitness classes and personal training. I now have eight years of experience and absolutely love what I do. I moved to Triple Crown in December of 2011, and my family and I love it here. Starting my own personal training business was a decision I made after working in fitness centers in the Northern Kentucky area, and seeing the inconveniences that it can bring to the members. For Triple Crown residents, the drive to the closest gym can take up to 15 minutes or more. And on top of the drive, after purchasing a membership, you then turn around and pay even more for classes and/or personal training. What I can offer to Triple Crown residents especially is the convenience of getting workouts that will get you results, right here in your own neighborhood. No driving to the gym, paying for the membership, and waiting in line for equipment. I love training out of my home for many reasons, but my customers especially love the privacy that is offers. You don't have to worry about who is watching or what you look like, because it is actually “personal” training. I pride myself in constantly changing workouts to keep them new and fun... So, if personal training is something that you have been interested in, but you don't want the inconveniences of the gym, please give me a call or email. We will set up a complimentary assessment where we will discuss your fitness goals and the type of training regimen that would be best for you. Thank You! Excuses are a means of rationalizing behavior we think may be controversial. For those on the receiving end, they can be a source of humor or disgust. One thing is for certain: people have a lot of excuses for not saving for retirement. Here are six of them: • I am paying for my child’s college education. There are many ways to fund your child’s education, including student loans, scholarships, grants, and other means. There are very few ways to fund your retirement. Retirement should be a savings priority. • My parents died young. Dying young is not a retirement plan and cannot be relied on. People are living longer today than ever before, and the trend is expected to continue. • I will live on Social Security. According to the 2010 trustees report for the Social Security Administration, the reserve will run out by 2037, and projected tax proceeds should cover about 75 percent of benefits through 2084. If Congress does nothing, younger generations may receive lower benefits than expected. • I will always work. A day may come when you are not able to work anymore. About 40 percent of people retire earlier than expected. Almost two-thirds of them retire because of poor health or a disability. • Too many current expenses. The only cure for too many expenses is old-fashioned budgeting. Always pay yourself first and, if there is money left over, splurge on the things you want. Don’t think about what you are missing today; think about what you will get in the future. • I am unemployed. Losing your job is not uncommon today. While unemployed, you may have to cut back or stop saving all together. Once you find a new job, make sure you start saving for retirement immediately. If you have been excusing yourself from saving for retirement, it’s time to take action. Join your employer-sponsored retirement plan, open an IRA, or call us for additional suggestions about how to save and invest for your future. “Legacy Financial Advisors, Inc. Setting the eyes in the correct position is one of the critical factors that is often overlooked. On that subject, there are two schools of thought. One method is to set the eyes directly over the ball, along the target line. If you putt this way, a center-shafted putter is probably the right tool to use. With your eyes directly over the ball, you’re setting up to take the putter straight back and straight through, never deviating from the target line. A center-shafted putter is made precisely for this type of stroke because the club head is balanced to swing like a pendulum. Brad Faxon and Mark O’Meara putt this way. The other technique is to situate your eye line inside the target line so that you look out toward the ball. If you’re more comfortable in this position, a heel-shafted putter is probably best. Ben Crenshaw and Lee Trevino have had tremendous success with this method over the years. When Crenshaw putts, for example, his putter head swings slightly inside the line, squares up at impact, then swings back inside on the follow through, much like the arc on a full swing. The putter head effectively swings like a door opening and closing on a fixed hinge. The fact that the shaft is in the heel of the club head accomplishes this stroke with immeasurable ease, but timing is at a premium. To discover which stroke is best for you, be sure to experiment with your eye line setup, but have the right tool in your hands to complete the job. $200.00 Off 38 NeighborhoodNews Triple Crown Life November November Triple Crown Life cream puff cake that I confectionately call, “PattyCake,” named after a dear friend who graciously shared the recipe. Kitchen Play in Whirlaway The holidays are officially in full swing and one of our family’s favorites is just around the corner - Thanksgiving! Or, as I like to call it, “Elastic Waistband Day.” Did you know fried turkey is addicting? Our son-in-law Erik fries the best, injecting several thousand calories worth of Cajun butter artery-clogger into Big Bird. Actually, it is my understanding that healthy deep fried turkey is not an oxymoron, if one uses peanut oil in the fryer. Since we only eat it once or twice a year, I’m going to enjoy every morsel of it, especially the wings. Of course, it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the traditional pumpkin pie for dessert. Now, this is where the elastic waistband comes in handy. And this month, I have a new favorite recipe that may just make you put down that piece of pie. It’s a 1 C water ½ C butter, softened 1 C all-purpose flour 4 eggs 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 3-3.4 oz. boxes INSTANT vanilla pudding 4 C. milk 8 oz. carton whipped topping Garnish: Hershey’s chocolate syrup (if it makes you feel better you can use the lite) NeighborhoodNews 39 Pour water into saucepan and add butter. Bring to boil; whisk in flour. Remove from heat. Cool. Add eggs, beating after each one; spread into a greased 13”x9” baking pan. Bake in a 400-degree oven for 30-35 minutes. (If you’re using a clear greased Pyrex dish, use a 375-degree oven and check for doneness at around 30 minutes.) Cool. Combine cream cheese and one box of pudding, mixing until smooth; add remaining pudding and milk. Pour this over crust and let set at least three hours or overnight, refrigerated. Right before serving, spread with whipped topping and drizzle with chocolate syrup. Makes 12-15 servings. If you have leftovers, refrigerate. You’re welcome. Chimney Liner Should I Use Article Source: www.housemaster.com Question: We own a really old house with an unlined central chimney. We want to add a liner to it. What types are available and what are the differences? Answer: If a chimney has no liner or the liner is damaged, there are two basic choices for installing a functional liner. The first involves lowering a rigid or flexible stainless steel flue liner into the chimney. Before insertion, the liner is wrapped with a ceramic blanket that is held in place with a wire mesh. The blanket insulates the liner from the masonry and helps to keep the flue warmer, which promotes a better up-draft. As an alternative, a lightweight cement mix can be poured around the liner. The second approach involves lowering an inflatable hose down inside the chimney. The hose is inflated and lightweight slurry is poured into the chimney around the hose. Once in place, the hose is deflated and removed. This method requires care in installing since the excess pressure could “blow out” a weak chimney. Check your local business directory for certified chimney sweeps or chimney restoration services to get more information on your chimney’s condition and options for lining. To find out how to list your business for free, email Linda at [email protected]. With over 10 million women affected with fibromyalgia syndrome in the prime of their life, many suffer and struggle from FMS for years before being correctly diagnosed. This debilitating disease affects women and men in an approximate ratio of 20:1. The problem begins between 20 – 30 years of age and symptoms usually appear between 20 - 55 years of age. Because there are no laboratory or X-ray examinations to physically prove the presence of this disease, many are convinced by their doctors that it is “all in their heads” making the symptoms of this condition even worse. To fulfill the criteria of having a fibromyalgia syndrome diagnosis, sufferers must have widespread pain present in at least 11 out of 18 fibromyalgia tender points for at least 3 months. Fibromyalgia Treatment Options The cause of fibromyalgia syndrome still remains uncertain and very few sufferers completely recover from the symptoms of FMS. Hence, a wide variety of interventions are used in the management of fibromyalgia today with no clear consensus on the treatment of choice. Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia Treatment In a study of 29 patients, all reported reduced pain and tender spots with acupuncture. The acupuncture group, after treatment, required far more pressure on tender points to produce pain while the use of pain killing medication was virtually halved, as was the patients’ assessment of regional pain levels. There was also a significant increase in quality of sleep. The length of time morning stiffness was experienced only improved a small amount. The fact that there are virtually no side effects from electroacupuncture make it attractive when compared with pain killing and/or antidepressant medication. Mayo Clinic anesthesiologist Dr. Martin has found acupuncture relieves fibromyalgia symptoms. He stated, "Our study was performed on patients with moderate to severe fibromyalgia. It is my speculation that if acupuncture works for these patients with recalcitrant fibromyalgia -- where previous treatments had not provided satisfactory relief -- it would likely work for many of the millions of fibromyalgia patients. Acupuncture is one of the few things shown to be effective for these symptoms. It may be particularly attractive to patients who are unable to take medications because of intolerable side effects." What You Can Do to take Charge of Your Fibromyalgia Symptoms Multidisciplinary approaches work best in the management of the physical and mental aspects of fibromyalgia syndrome. Treatment should be individualized based on the target symptoms, and disability. Patience and a positive attitude on the part of the physician, along with involvement of patients and their families will enhance improvement. Using a combination of fibromyalgia self care and exercise techniques, alternative and integrative therapies, exercise, a healthy diet and nutritional supplements will take you on the road to recovery. Open a dialogue with your doctor to discuss various options and strategies to overcome your fibromyalgia symptoms. 46 ClassifiedAds Triple Crown Life November November Triple Crown Life classified ads To place a FREE classified, email [email protected] by the 23rd of the month.
