New beginnings: Parks manager Mark Bowater with two prospective seedlings for One Tree Hill. Six pohutukawa and three totara trees are being grown as possible candidates for the replanting.

Still seeds of doubt
By RHIANNON HORRELL
IT COULD be a another year
before None Tree Hill
becomes One Tree Hill again
– or maybe even Many Tree
Hill.
Yesterday marked 10 years
since
Auckland’s
iconic
monterey pine was removed
after an attack in 2000 left it
in a precarious state.
A replanting on the
mountain’s summit is a hotly
contested issue and the Auckland City Council has been
raising potential replacement
trees in a secret location.
‘‘The approved planting
plan for the summit of One
2696689AT
Tree Hill contains a total of
nine trees – six pohutukawa
and three totara,’’ parks manager Mark Bowater says.
‘‘The eventual aim is for
one suitable tree to become
prominent on the summit as
per the goals of the One Tree
Hill management plan. The
initial grove planting offers
the best chances of future
tree survival on such a harsh
planting site.’’
Mr Bowater says potential
replacements have been ecosourced from parent trees in
the vicinity of One Tree Hill.
‘‘These trees range in size
from small 20cm cuttings to
over three metres. The actual
nine trees to be used have not
specifically been chosen.’’
But Mr Bowater says no
additions to the summit will
be made until Treaty of Waitangi
settlements
are
resolved.
‘‘Negotiations between the
Crown and Auckland region
iwi have reached an agreement in principle stage but
still need to be fully resolved
and passed through Parliament, which may take a year
or longer.’’
The agreement would see
ownership of the city’s 11 volcanic cones transferred to a
new iwi collective called Nga
Mana Whenua o Tamaki
Makaurau, which would still
provide public access.
The Maori name for the
mountain is Maungakiekie.
Ngati Whatua spokesman
Ngarimu Blair says his
group’s position is the same
as it has been for the past 10
years.
‘‘We
will
consider
replanting
once
treaty
settlements
have
been
settled.
‘‘Maungakiekie and its loss
was a major issue for us. It’s
premature for these sorts of
discussions.
‘‘Hopefully we will have an
agreement signed in autumn.
‘‘We’re working hard to
reach a conclusion to treaty
grievances.
‘‘The delays are usually
around when the Crown is
willing and ready to enter a
settlement. The sooner the
better.’’
Newly-elected Auckland
councillor and former mayor
Chris Fletcher recalls the day
the tree was removed.
‘‘It was a really traumatic
decision but the advice from
the officers was that it was
unsafe. Just as Auckland is
known as the City of Sails
and for Rangitoto, it was
known for One Tree Hill. It
was with a heavy heart I
authorised the removal.’’
She says a number of
pohutukawa seedlings were
growing at the base of the
tree that had nestled between
the roots.
‘‘There’s something very
special about those particular
pohutukawa. They were
there on that day.
‘‘It was also very moving to
see the people who came up
the mountain on that morning.
‘‘It’s time for a new beginning. There have been
delays,’’ she says
‘‘I hope there will be a
replanting at an appropriate
time with the blessing of
everyone.’’

Renowned national and international chefs are opening
SkyCity’s kitchens and banquet rooms to benefit the
Leukemia and Blood Foundation.
This Saturday the SkyCity
Dining for a Difference fundraiser will be a culinary affair
that sees a sumptuous feast
prepared with a twist.
Table numbers will be
randomly drawn with each
chef and their accomplice producing a four-course menu
with matching wines for two
tables of 10 guests.
SkyCity commis chef Filipe
Talaid will be assisting Wellington chef Rex Morgan on
the night and is looking forward to the challenge.
‘‘Western and Asian cuisine

says.
Mr Morgan has won many
culinary awards including
New Zealand Chef of the Year
and is also a consultant chef to
Air New Zealand.
He says past events have
raised more than $150,000 for
the foundation.
‘‘Not only is this a great

to catch up with the other
chefs and meet new international chefs,’’ he says.

Puppies pinched from store
By RHIANNON HORRELL
HELP is needed to track
down a pair of brazen dognappers who made off with
three small puppies last
Tuesday.
Onehunga Pet and Vet
Supplies manager Angela
Taliai was alone in the Princes St shop when the theft
unfolded.
‘‘Two guys came in. My
mother breeds the dogs and
she likes people to pat them.
They walked up to the pups
and one of them picked one
up.
‘‘They asked me how old
they were and then he picked
up the second one. I knew it
was bizarre and I was about
to ask them to put them
down.
‘‘The guy had two in his
hands,’’ she says.
‘‘They didn’t look like the
type to pick up purse puppies.
As I went to move they ran
for it and a car was waiting
outside. That was it. They
were gone.’’
Mrs Taliai says the three
puppies taken are worth
$1000 to $1500 each. Two of
them are described as
10-week-old pomeranian and
papillon crossbreeds and the
third was an eight-week-old
Japanese spitz papillon cross.
Two of the dogs are grey
and black and the other is
white and fawn coloured.
‘‘They’re quite unusual,
they’re like mini German
shepherd puppies,’’ Mrs
Taliai says.
‘‘It’s not even the money
factor.
Rare breed: Two of the three
puppies taken are pomeranian
and papillon crossbreeds and
the third is a Japanese spitz
papillon cross. The owners of
Onehunga Pet and Vet Supplies
are seeking their safe return.
Puppy pinchers: These two men are being sought by police after they took three young puppies from the Onehunga Pet and Vet Supplies
store on October 19.
‘‘They’re my mum’s puppies
and she is down and
depressed. It’s taking a toll.’’
Mrs Taliai says she has not
slept properly since the incident.
‘‘It’s the type of shop where
we are known for letting kids
come in and pet the animals.
This is a complete disappoint-
ment. The trust has been
broken.
‘‘We don’t believe in locking
the dogs up.’’
She hopes the dogs will be
safely returned because they
are quite distinctive.
Onehunga police senior
sergeant Hirone Waretini is
calling on the community’s
help to identify the offenders.
‘‘Who would steal a puppy
like that?
‘‘If they weren’t stolen to
on-sell
unlawfully,
the
alternatives don’t bear thinking about,’’ he says.
‘‘It’s brazen, it was done in
plain sight and these
offenders are obviously cocky.
Someone will know who they
are.’’
Mrs Taliai says the
offenders took off in a white
Mazda Familia and the first
two first letters of the number plate are AY. One of the
men being sought was wearing grey track pants, white
sports shoes, a dark top and a
cap, while the other man was
wearing black shorts, a grey
top with a white t-shirt
underneath.

Concerns raised over sale of Tongan residence
The Tongan community is
calling for a united voice to
speak out and show solidarity
against the sale of the royal
Tongan residence in Epsom.
The property, Atalanga, is
listed with the real estate
firm Bayleys and tenders for
its multi-million dollar sale
close tomorrow.
‘‘There is a historical connection to this place for all
Tongan people,’’ Tongan
Advisory Council chairman
Melino Maka says.
‘‘Apart from the churches,
our people living in Aotearoa
have no other place to relate
to from a cultural perspective.’’
There is a debate around
exactly owns the 1.6 hectare
property on St Andrews Rd –
the Tongan government or its
royal family – and why it is

Recently, three Tongan
lawyers put a caveat on the
historical property, claiming
it is owned by the government and belongs to the
Tongan taxpayers.
It is generally agreed the
property was purchased by
the late Queen Salote in
1952.
However, the conflicting
information means the sale is
looking complicated and Mr
Maka says at this point no
central communication has
taken place to discuss potential outcomes.
‘‘If we have some communication from Tonga that will
help. We don’t want to end up
with people getting overemotional about the buildings.’’
The South Epsom Planning
Group is also concerned the
sale will destroy a local land-

Playing Bach on baroque oboes
By JANIE SMITH
It’s not quite the instrument that
would have been used in Bach’s day,
but a slightly more modern version
of the baroque oboe d’amore will be
heard on stage tomorrow night.
Oboe players Camille White and
Henry Ward will play two of the
rare instruments in the Auckland
Philharmonia Orchestra’s Choral
Masterpieces performance of Bach’s
St Matthew Passion.
The orchestra owns one of the
oboes d’amore but the other is on
loan from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
The musicians play both the regular oboe and the oboe d’amore for
the piece. Camille has played the
rare instrument before but it’s
Henry’s first time.
‘‘I’ve been working on it for about
a month, practising. We’ve been
exchanging tips and talking to past
teachers,’’ he says.
The baroque-style instrument
uses the same fingering system as a
regular oboe but produces a lower
pitch. The main difference is a small
tube called a bocal which connects
the reed to the instrument. The
oboe d’amore uses a bocal, while
other oboes do not.
Camille says oboe players have to
make their own reeds from a
material similar to bamboo. ‘‘We
spend many hours finessing reeds.’’
The Sandringham resident says
each reed is unique and different
ones need to be created for different
types of music.
Henry says they spend almost as

much time making reeds as they do
playing with the orchestra.
‘‘The weather changes reeds. It’s
a lot of work, we are very finicky
and detail-oriented.’’
Camille has been with the orchestra for a year and Henry, who lives
in Grey Lynn, has been part of it
since February.
‘‘The music we get to play, like
the St Matthew Passion, is incredible. I’ve been looking forward to it
for many months,’’ he says.
Camille says it’s a rare opportunity to play the piece.
‘‘I think it’s one of the greatest
pieces ever written. I’ve been
waiting my whole life to play it.’’
Both are excited to be working
with principal guest conductor Roy
Goodman, a baroque specialist.
‘‘The spirit he brings to the music
and how he brings it alive is really
exciting,’’ Camille says.
The concert also features another
rare instrument, the viola da
gamba.

performance of Bach’s St Matthew

Film festival reveals real India
By HANNAH SPYKSMA
An alternative insight into Indian
culture is on offer at a film festival.
The Yes India Film Festival at
Rialto Cinemas will coincide with
the Diwali festival of lights, India’s
biggest cultural celebration.
Tag-lined ‘‘cinema that makes
you think’’, the film festival aims to
give Kiwis a look at parallel cinema
– India’s sector of art-house movies
which are often overshadowed by
the world famous Bollywood genre.
Organiser Ravi Kambhoj says
this is a perfect way for the public to
get an insight into the rich culture
and history of India.
‘‘Bollywood is what the western
world knows India’s cinema industry for, but at the same time we
make beautiful films. Yes, India has
a focus on dynamic, visionary cinema.’’
Mr Kambhoj says the festival,
supported by Diwali co-organiser
the Asia New Zealand Foundation,
is timed to open at the same time as
the festival of lights because both
events are a celebration of Indian
culture.
‘‘It is an opportunity to not only
celebrate and indulge in the sights,
sounds, tastes and colour of the festival of lights, but to enjoy an
intriguing mix of Indian films made
outside the Bollywood mould.’’
Diwali will take place during this
weekend.
Held at Aotea Square, the Aotea
Centre and The Edge, it is a festival
marking the new year and
celebrating the triumph of light
over darkness.
Cultural insight: The film The White Elephant, which follows the story of a poor man who goes on a life-changing experience,
is part of the Yes India Film Festival.
As well as the film festival,
highlights include international
music and magician acts, art
exhibitions, dance competitions,
fireworks and food.
Foundation spokeswoman Jennifer King says Diwali is to India
what Christmas is to New Zealand.
‘‘It’s been celebrated in New Zealand for as long as there’s been
Indians in New Zealand. But what
Asia New Zealand wanted was to
bring it out for everyone to see and
take part in.’’
Ms King says overall, she is
pleased with how Diwali is being
taken to heart in New Zealand.
The Yes India Film Festival will
open tomorrow with a World Vision
fundraising evening, screening a
film about the making of Mahatma
Agenda. The evening will include
bangra dancers – a popular Indian
style of dance.
■ Diwali, hosted by the Asian New
Zealand Foundation and the Auckland City Council, takes place on
October 30 and 31 at Aotea Square,
Aotea Centre and The Edge. Events
are free.
■ The Yes India Film Festival is on
until November 3 at Rialto
Cinemas, Newmarket.

Are road planners around the bend?
‘‘go’’ and ‘‘stop’’ signs could
pick well in advance what
would happen if the old twoway bridge stayed.
It did and they were right.
The barrels of taxpayer cash
that went into that brainstorm did what the roadusers predicted – it simply
moved the traditional holdups a few hundred metres
north.
If you went through for this
holiday weekend and had
delays and blood-pressure
problems as a result tell me
about it.
But it seems such stuff-ups
are not limited to the north of
our brand-new, not-so-supercity.
The Manukau Courier’s ace
gridlock detectors have
logged problems on the new
$220 million State Highway
20 extension where it links
with the southern motorway.
Apparently the new gridlocks which traditionally follow redevelopment have been
driving drivers stark, raving
mad.
They’re using publishable
words like ‘‘total disaster’’
and ‘‘the worst in 30 years
shambles’’ along with four-
R
letter descriptions of the
hold-ups and the designers
who produced them.
‘‘We’re redesigning the
merge’’ is the official answer.
Plus one of those state-ofthe-art throwaway lines: ‘‘We
didn’t forecast this congestion.’’
I would have thought correct forecasting was one of
the necessities.
Further into their explanation were those terrible
two words ‘‘ramp signals’’.
Does anyone out there share
the designer’s belief that they
help drivers more than the
old, easy-to-follow ‘‘merge
like a zip’’ system?
You’ve got to have reflexes
like a GP driver to get the
jump and use them.
One woman driver I heard
of who didn’t quite achieve
that was flagged down by the
plainclothes police car behind
her and given a ticket for
‘‘driving through a red light’’
– which had flashed on
momentarily with her halfway through.
Which they tend to do.
★ ★ ★
Another terrible statistic.
This one from the guilty ver-
dict against the horse breeder
who killed his wife with a
shotgun.
The quote came from the
police head of the inquiry. On
average, one New Zealand
woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner every five
weeks.
Two more facts from a justice system coping with a logjam of cases.
One report suggests the
hearing of the murder charge
following the death and dismembering
of
Carmen
Thomas is unlikely to begin
before early 2012. That’s
right, not next year but the
year after.
Worse than that. You
remember the dramatic
armed police raids in Tuhoi
country under the Terrorism
Suppression Act.
You’re excused if you don’t
remember – they were on
October 15, 2007. Well, do
you remember Helen Clark?
She was PM? Eighteen people
were arrested and charged.
A year later further
charges were added to the
several hundred already
listed.
The last prediction I heard
was that the cases would
come to court some time in
2011 – the fourth year since
the event and the charges.
And that it might take four or
more months for a decision.
I’m not putting in a plea for
the accused. Just asking an

Oh, really.
At which point I leaned
into my bookcases and
opened up past teamings in
1924.
I remember how my father
used to rave about this lineup against Wales – who else?
We won 19-0: George Nepia,
Jack Steel, Bert Cooke, K S
(Snowy) Svenson, Mark
Nicholls, Neil McGregor,
Jimmy Mill.
Nepia, 19, played all 32
matches on the Invincibles
tour, Jack Steel, New Zealand sprint champion, Bert
Cooke, Mark Nicholls, both
among the greatest of all time
(and I named my second son
Mark after him. I can still see
my son’s rapt expression
when I introduced them to
each other), Jimmy Mill,
ranked with the best, Snowy
Svenson and Neil McGregor
good enough to play with the
finest.
Now that would be a
match-up.
Got any other combinations
you’d like to throw into the
mix?

obvious question: What sort
of justice is that?
The law industry has an
old saying: Justice delayed is
justice denied.
This interminable delay
could be seen as fitting perfectly into that category.
Can the system find a representative jury able to shut
their normal life away for
that long?
Just as importantly, how
many less spectacular cases
will be on hold while top
counsel are booked into that
one court room for so long –
thus spreading potential
injustice even further?
And what do you bet that
Tame Iti or his fellow accused
argue for part or all of
proceedings to be in Maori or
at least be translated into te
reo?
Think how long that will
take.
★ ★ ★
So footie has changed in
the last decade along with its
rules and the various
incentives that big money
offers.
All of which makes comparisons difficult.
And makes some questionable.
This thought came to mind
when one commentator rabbited on about the inevitable
selection of league migrant
Sonny Bill Williams as an All
Black. (Now there was a surprise – not.)
Already a law unto themselves, roading engineers are
getting an even worse reputation.
Remember the shambles on
the toll road north when it
opened as if to a roll of drums
closely followed by the
revving of stationary engines
and
the
grumbles
of
gridlocked drivers. Remember too the computer system
which had gremlins.
It was probably the only
roading project intended to
clean up traffic flows where
the minister heading there to
cut the tape was late –
because of traffic gridlocks.
As if that wasn’t enough,
further north near the Warkworth exit – which has world
record status among the
worst in the developed world
– the design engineers have
done it again.
Construction teams have
laboured mightily and forever
– by my count about as long
as it took to build the
pyramids – and have widened
the road to four lanes.
If you’re thinking of holiday traffic snarl-ups going
north that sounds like real
progress. Until you clear the
traffic lights and brake hard
on to an ancient two-lane
bridge which we all thought
they’d either replace or duplicate.

At the end of the day, our experiences are fully human. When we
have really distressing experiences
we can start to feel not human.’’
Mr Chunn, who was on the selection panel for the 2009 media

skills and the beautiful ambition
that has propelled those songs to
reality, makes for a story to be celebrated.
‘‘Against many odds Sam has

brave and honest songs – that show
her to be a major talent.’’

She’s just released her debut album
but singer-songwriter samRB has
already had a single make it to the
big screen.
The Three Kings performer had
the song Life Has Just Begun, from
her album Seems I Might be
Human, picked up by the New Zealand film the Insatiable Moon.
‘‘It’s been an awesome year for
me,’’ she says.
The album was partly funded by a
New Zealand Mental Health media
grant and the single was used as an
anthem at the end of the film.
Sam started writing lyrics while
at high school but was already
playing music before that.
‘‘I was really fascinated by
guitars. Any chance I got, I would
practise or try to copy people. I
taught myself to play.’’
She says creating music isn’t
about the outcome for her.
‘‘It’s about the process. I get to
lose myself in it.’’
The grant part-funded the
album’s production and Sam says it
wouldn’t be what it is without the
help of people like well-known
musician Mike Chunn.
‘‘He does such amazing, cool stuff
for New Zealand music. He hooked
me up with the right producer who
could do it within the budget and
played at the launch. He also
hooked me up with the other people
in the band.
‘‘The money was fantastic, but it
wasn’t enough on its own to make
the album. Without him it would
have been an EP.

Blind support: Carissa Gordon and her three-year-old son Branson will be raising money
for the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind on Saturday.

Making a blind
bit of difference
By SARAH MOYES
Underneath it all Branson Gordon is
just a normal three-year-old boy.
‘‘He’s just a boy who has to do things
a little differently,’’ mum Carissa says.
Branson is completely blind.
On Saturday Mrs Gordon, with her
son in tow, will be out on the streets
collecting money for the Royal New
Zealand Foundation of the Blind’s
annual appeal.
The Greenlane mother-of-four contracted a parasitic disease called congenital toxoplasmosis when she was
pregnant with Branson.
She is not sure how she became
infected – she first started feeling
unwell while holidaying in Fiji at 24
weeks gestation.
‘‘I thought I was doing all the right
things,’’ Mrs Gordon says.
It’s possible she contracted the infection from the soil on unwashed
vegetables.
At 28 weeks the infection was diagnosed. Mrs Gordon and her husband
were given the option to terminate
because of the extent of brain damage.
‘‘For us it just wasn’t an option.’’
Branson was born at 32 weeks and
Mrs Branson says being blind is the
least of his problems.
‘‘The infection gave him scattered
brain damage throughout his brain.’’
This means he’s smaller than the
average almost-four-year-old, and
until medication was sorted he was
having seizures every few weeks.
Mrs Gordon says looking after
Branson is different to caring for his
three siblings.
Simple things like eating can be difficult – when Branson dropped food he
used to think it had ‘‘disappeared off
the face of the earth’’.
When getting him to touch things,
Mrs Gordon can’t hold his hand – she
must direct him from the elbow so he’s
in control.
‘‘It’s really basic things like that,’’
she says.
Blind Week started yesterday and
runs until Monday. This year the foundation is celebrating 120 years of service to blind and partially sighted New
Zealanders.

Organisers of a fundraising campaign
to tackle homelessness are delighted
by its success.
The inaugural Lifewise Big Sleepout
raised more than $95,000 by inviting
leading Aucklanders to sleep rough
overnight.
Participant Lou Draper says her
initial idea of a fun night with just a
bit of discomfort could not have been
further from the truth.
‘‘I got about five minutes’ sleep and
sure enough at 4am, it dawned on me
how horrible the situation really is –
that people do this for real every night.
It’s pretty upsetting.’’
She says many people find it easier
to run away from their issues rather
than deal with them.
‘‘That’s where Lifewise comes into it.
They have councillors who work at the
centre who help rehabilitate them into
homes and help them into education
and jobs,’’ she says.
‘‘And coming home to a house full of
stuff was actually quite sickening so
I’ve decided to give it all away. I have
furniture and excess kitchen stuff,
clothes and books that Lifewise is picking up for rehabilitated people moving
into their new homes.

compost heaps, worm farming and the Bokashi process.
Bokashi is a new method of dealing with food waste that was developed
in Japan and uses bacteria to break down food scraps. The benefits of this
process are that it is fully contained, there is no odour and you get a great
product for your soil.
Come along and help make a difference for the environment

Lifewise also provides 47,000 meals

marginalised people.
General manager John McCarthy
says the response to the big sleepout
exceeded expectations with more than
60 business and community leaders as
well as politicians sleeping on cardboard in a central city carpark.
He thanked the participants for
their ‘‘brilliant efforts’’ and encouraged
them all to come back for next year’s

‘‘In the past two years, Lifewise has

Proceeds from the event will help

School holiday change for world cup
By HANNAH SPYKSMA
School is back and term four is
well under way but this time next
year schools throughout the
country will still be on holiday.
The dates for terms have been
shuffled around to coincide with
the final of the Rugby World Cup.
The decision, made by previous
Education Minister Trevor Mallard, is drawing mixed reactions
from schools.
For Kowhai Intermediate, situated right next to Eden Park, it is
a welcome change.
‘‘I think it is a great idea,’’ principal Paul Douglas says.
The first term will be two or
three weeks longer, pushing third
term holidays back to midOctober.
‘‘It means kids can get on with
Dale Burden
schooling while they are there. It
doesn’t seem an issue for us and
we’ve had no negative feedback
about the changes.’’
Mt Albert Primary School acting principal Sonya Davies also
believes it is not a big deal and is
quite pleased it will lessen the
amount of traffic around the
school during the cup.
But Mt Albert Grammar School
headmaster Dale Burton believes
it was an unnecessary move which
is too disruptive.
‘‘I don’t know why they had to
do it, there must have been valid
reasons but I haven’t heard
them.’’
Mr Burton says this is an Auckland issue, yet the changes are
going to affect the whole country.
‘‘Someone in Gore is going to
say, ‘Well how does this affect
me’?’’
The schools have had little or no
feedback from parents about the
changes.
Third term holidays will run
from October 7 to 25 next year.

Fiesta in Mt Eden
By CARLY TAWHIAO
With the outfits, the music and the
moves, Spanish dance aficionados
young and old are ready to put on a
fiesta performance.
Jane Luscombe’s Spanish Dance
School is hosting a free concert to
showcase the talents of its dancers,
with support from the Auckland
City Council.
Ms Luscombe has been teaching
Spanish dance for almost 40 years
and performs regularly in resthomes
and at cultural festivals.
She fell in love with dance form in
1972.
‘‘When I was a teenager in London
I spotted a Spanish troupe and there
was just something so exotic about
it. It struck a chord with me and I
pursued it.’’
The music inspires Ms Luscombe,
who teaches weekly classes at the St
Barnabas Scout Hall in Mt Eden.
‘‘The music lets us interpret a lot
of emotion. I teach the routines but
you can be an individual in it,
depending on how you react,’’ she
says.
‘‘Once people come along they’re
hooked. It’s a great form of exercise
too.’’
Dance student Rosalyn Reeve
joined Ms Luscombe’s troupe in
2001 but her six-year-old daughter
Isabella had to wait until she was
four before she could join in too.
‘‘Isabella grew up listening to
music and she dances because she
enjoys it. She wanted to dance when
she was two-and-a-half,’’ Mrs Reeves says.
‘‘I enjoy the music first and foremost, and the colour and the
friendships too. It’s different to a lot
of dance forms in this country.’’
Mrs Reeves’ favourite dance is the
fast flamenco rhythm of the buleria
because ‘‘it’s quite festive, very
upbeat, fun and a little bit cheeky.’’
Isabella prefers the pasadoble
because she gets to use fans.
‘‘Every movement of the fan
means something,’’ Ms Luscombe
says.
The hour-long concert incorporates more than 20 items from 16
dancers, who participate in a hobby
that brings ‘‘joy in their lives,’’ Ms
Luscombe says.
‘‘The performance opportunity
gives an edge to what we do. It
makes us work hard.’’
The Spanish Dance Fiesta will
take place at the Mt Eden War
Memorial Hall, 489 Dominion Rd,
Mt Eden at 2pm on Sunday.
Entry is free although a donation
is appreciated.

Power pylon a blight on Onehunga skyline
By RHIANNON HORRELL
The Onehunga skyline is now home
to another pylon that has sparked a
bitter reaction from residents of the
area.
The new 25-metre pylon in
George Tce was erected last month
as a training facility and has been
given a five-year resource consent.
But the structure has been met
with disapproval from some of its
neighbours.
Onehunga Enhancement Society
chairman Jim Jackson says the
society is disappointed that the sky-
line has been further compromised.
‘‘This is one more we would prefer
not to see. Surely there is a more
appropriate place for it.’’
Outgoing Maungakiekie Community Board chairwoman Bridget
Graham is also furious.
‘‘It was a non-notified application
with no consultation. Now we have
a new power pylon. I’m extremely
upset,’’ she says.
She has requested an assessment
of environmental affects from the
Auckland City Council.
However, the decision to grant
consent, made by independent com-
missioner Greg Hill, says the pylon
will have a less than minor effect on
the surrounding environment.
‘‘The power pylon is considered
characteristic of the surrounding
landscape, given the amount of
existing pylons in the area,’’ it
reads.
‘‘It is considered the pylon will
have positive effects to the wider
community in ensuring the maintenance and upkeep of Auckland’s
electricity infrastructure.’’
The pylon is owned by asset
maintenance
company
TBS
Farnsworth.

General
manager
Graham
Matthews says the operation in
Onehunga is a transmission tower
maintenance and painting business.
He says the main function of the
tower is for lines maintenance
training.
‘‘There’s issues with elevation and
height. We have to teach people how
to climb around on it. It’s an industry where training requirements are
rigorous and strict.
‘‘We can only train on nonoperating assets. Previously we had
to send staff to the South Island to
train.
‘‘It’s a facility not just for us but
for the whole of the power industry.
It will mean that on windy days,
hopefully there will be plenty of
trained people to turn the lights
back on.
‘‘While there is a small visual
downside associated with it, there’s
a whole forest of towers out that
way and it is a light industrial area.
It’s very difficult to get training
done otherwise.’’
‘‘I do have some sympathy,’’ he
says of residents. ‘‘It is on the skyline but so is the Sky Tower and
people have got used to that.’’
Chance to focus on latest
research in eye treatment
A sneak peek into the future of eye
care is on offer this weekend.
The New Zealand National Eye Centre is opening its doors to the public on
Sunday.
Based at Auckland University, the
centre is one of the premier research
and treatment institutions in Australasia.
The centre trains the next generation of ophthalmologists and is home
to international drug trials and
cutting-edge research into cures for
blindness.
Director professor Charles McGhee
says the open day will be a chance for
Aucklanders to see the huge strides
being made into various treatments for
eye conditions.
‘‘From lazy eye to corneal
transplants, and from developing
drugs to new techniques for eye surgery, the centre houses the very best of
eye clinicians and researchers from
around the world – and they’re all
right here in Auckland,’’ he says.
The theme for the day is the Four
Ages of the Eye: Childhood, young
adult, diminishing sight and the
ageing eye.
It will include several lectures from
leading researchers of ophthalmology
and vision science, research displays
and plenty of hands-on activities for
young and old, including 3D vision
exhibits and optical illusions.

Cultural awareness through course
Outward Bound and the Human
Rights Commission are offering
young Aucklanders the chance to
explore cultural diversity in the
new supercity.
The fully-funded Southern
Cross course is based on Outward
Bound’s classic 21-day course, but
aims to foster greater understanding between different cultures in
the Auckland region.
Human Rights Commission
race relations commissioner Joris
de Bres says the course will help
develop a multicultural network
of emerging young leaders.
Along with becoming more
culturally
aware,
course
participants will take part in a
wide range of activities including
sailing, kayaking and tramping.
‘‘With the advent of the new
supercity and increased need for
all sectors of the community to
work together cohesively, the
timing couldn’t be better for
encouraging participation in the
Southern Cross course,’’ Outward
Bound chief executive Trevor Taylor says.
Former Southern Cross participant Finland Tan says taking part
in the course boosted her confidence and gave her a greater

appreciation of other cultures.
‘‘I learnt a lot about myself – in
particular my strengths and
weaknesses – and a great deal
about other cultures and ethnicities.’’
The Southern Cross course runs
from January 31 until February
20, 2011, and is open to Aucklanders aged between 18 and 26
from a variety of different ethnicities.

Green therapy: Sheryl Hall takes some time out from looking after her three children,
all of whom have special needs.
Photo: NICOLA MURPHY
Sheryl Hall has a stressful life.
All three of her children have special
needs. Her eldest daughter Amy, 21,
has Cerebral Palsy while Sarah, 16,
has Autism.
Her son Chris, 20, has a condition
called Pervasive Developmental Disorder which is similar to Asperger’s
Syndrome.
Mrs Hall’s not complaining though.
She says there are plenty of people
worse off than her.
‘‘At the end of the day you’re just
grateful they’re not any worse.’’
She is involved with Recreate NZ
which provides support and activities
for children and young adults with
special needs and their families.
The Auckland-wide organisation,
which is based in Onehunga, runs
weekend retreats for mothers of children with special needs and Mrs Hall
has taken advantage of them many
times.
She says the trips are very import-
ant for helping her de-stress. ‘‘Sometimes you’re so exhausted you sleep all
weekend,’’ she says.
Her husband Richard takes care of
the children while she takes time out.
‘‘He knows if mums aren’t doing well
the whole household suffers.’’
Recreate development co-ordinator
Brent Jenkin says fewer mums are
taking part because most parents don’t
have a lot of money to spend on
leisure.
Mothers get a carer support allocation from the government that they
could previously use to go on a retreat.
But the Health Ministry is enforcing
its rule that this funding now be put
towards the benefit of the children.
She says one of the reasons she finds
the retreats beneficial is the opportunity to discuss her experiences with
other mothers who are in the same
boat.
The next mothers’ retreat weekend
is on November 21.

Signs of the times
By KAREN MANGNALL
Out with the old cities, in
with the supercity.
The supercity’s rebranding
is under way with signs at 86
sites being replaced before
the Auckland Council merger
on November 1.
One of the first to go was
the Welcome to Manukau
sign at Auckland airport.
Mayor-elect Len Brown
says it marks a ‘‘milestone’’ in
the move toward a united
Auckland. ‘‘It couldn’t be in a
more fitting position welcoming the thousand of visitors
who fly into the airport and
the thousands of Aucklanders
returning home.
‘‘It’s also fitting that the
first sign has been unveiled
in Manukau city, given the
support people here have
given me moving forward into
the new era.’’
New welcome billboards
are being set up across the
region as part of an initial
$850,000 supercity rebranding by the Auckland Transition Agency.
Main signs on civic buildings, service centres, local
board offices, libraries, and
fleet vehicles will be by
November 1.
The remaining interior and
exterior signs will be changed
after that.
Rebranding of street signs,
parks and public toilets will
be done progressively from Sign of the times: Supercity mayor-elect Len Brown with the new greeting for visitors arriving at
Auckland airport. It replaces the old Welcome to Manukau sign.

Email service helps career choices Real estate in school
Career Services has launched a
new email service which will provide adults living or working with
teens with a range of practical
tools, information and support for
helping teens make good career
and education decisions.
Career Tips provides career
guidance advice for parents, families and people working with
teens in the community, including
teachers, mentors and sports
coaches.
The e-newsletter will be sent
every two months and cover a
range of topics that will help
adults support young people in
their study, work and life
decisions. The first issue covers
topics such as helping teens
choose their school subjects, helping beat exam stress and information on where to go for tertiary
education funding.
‘‘Many different adults influence a young person’s career
aspirations, as well as the choices
they make during their career
journey,’’ says Ross Jones, Career
Services area manager for Central
North.
‘‘It’s vital that those who have
an impact on the lives of young
people have the skills, tools and
techniques to help focus their
teen’s decision making, build optimism for the future and positively
support first career steps,’’ he
says.
In education terms the ‘3 Rs’ were
once reading, writing and arithmetic. There will soon be a fourth ‘R’ –
the opportunity to start a career in
real estate will soon start at school.
Real ITO, the industry training
arm of the real estate industry, in
partnership with the Real Estate
Institute of New Zealand, is working
on level 2 and 3 qualifications for
secondary school students.
‘‘Over 17,000 people are licensed,
under the real estate agents act, to
work in real estate offices through-

Maraea has also convinced two friends and
an aunty to enroll on the
course.
‘‘One friend had dropped out of school and I

cemented into the Mt

A large red poppy
designed and drawn by
artist Sally Legg is being
transformed
into
a
mosaic artwork to reflect
the war-time recollection
of senior citizens.
The project is called A
Poppy to Remember and
was initiated by the
YMCA’s Mt Albert Community and Recreation
Centre manager Robyn
Brady on behalf of a
senior programme called
Never 2 Old.
The
group
came
together in 2007 to pen
their memoirs in a creative writing course.
This
led
to
incorporating
their
stories into a 10-week
mosaic workshop which
has finished off with the
red poppy art work collaboration.
For most of the group
it was their first attempt
at creating a mosaic but
the feedback has been
overwhelmingly positive.

‘‘Different

Ms Brady says the
poppy motif sums up
nicely the thoughts and
reflections of all those
involved, and will be an
injection of colour inside
the hall.
‘‘This
art
piece,
cemented on to a constructed board, will not

its

Ms Brady says the
plan is to present the

She has decided to
