BCFE has built a reputation for providing the highest standard of Learner centered education. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer high quality education courses in a friendly and relaxed environment, specifically towards adults returning to education We are pleased to inform you that our course fees have in general not increased and in some cases are less expensive than before! It has been a busy and highly successful year for the College particularly in Animation with one of our graduates winning an Oscar and others being nominated for international awards. With this in mind, we are delighted to offer a course in Portfolio Preparation for Animation. Art Portfolio Preparation is as popular following on the successful return of our summer school in this area. As always, the September Portfolio course is on offer and as a new insert in the brochure, we are including the information for Summer school in June 2011.We expect this course to be popular, early enrolment is advised, as class size is restricted to 17. Following on public demand, we have extended our provision of FETAC courses and modules. Students have now the flexibility to complete modules separately and take as much time as they need to build into a full award, this is a model we are using this year for our new childcare courses. We are delighted to offer a new NUI Maynooth Certificate in Economics and Finance, while still continuing to offer the NUIM Certificates in Counselling and Addiction Studies. Millinery is a course, we are sure will be popular, and this is all a new inclusion to our existing course provision. Caroline McKenna Director of Adult Education 3 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 4 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 Art and Crafts A1 ART PORTFOLIO PREPARATION A course specifically designed in portfolio preparation for those wishing to apply to art colleges. Participants will be expected to work on preparation of their portfolios outside of class hours. Students should be at least 16 years and all those under 18 will be required to have a parental/guardian consent form signed on their behalf. Note: A model will be used for some life drawing sessions. MONDAY & WEDNESDAY A2 6.45-9.45pm PORTFOLIO PREPARATION FOR DURATION: 15 weeks COST: €300.00 ANIMATION New The aim of this course is to help students develop a portfolio which is suitable for admission to our Animation Drawing Studies Program. During the course students will explore a variety of media and the use of colour. There will be a strong focus on observational studies from life. Wednesday A3 6.45-9.45pm Duration: 15 weeks. Cost: €180.00 MILLINERY AS A HOME CRAFT New Aim of Course: The aim of the course is to provide students with the skills to design and create amazing, individual headpieces, hats and fascinators using traditional millinery fabrics and techniques from the comfort of their own home. Over 15 weeks, students will be taught the principals of Millinery design and construction, and how to put these principals into practice. Topics include hand stitching and machine work, creating brimmed pieces, using moulds to get solid shapes, and embellishing their finished pieces with beadwork and feathers. Students should bring an assortment of beads, threads, scissors, pins, ribbons, synthetic flowers, haberdashery etc. which they feel would add to their final creations. Weeks 1 – 5 – FASCINATORS - Introduction to Fabrics, Patterns, Dyeing. - Stiffeners, colours and edging. Tricks of the trade. - Shaping, cutting and moulding. WEEKS 6 – 10 - Assembling your piece. - Beading, feathers and embroidery to make your creation a truly individual statement. - Dyeing, cutting and shaping feathers. - Bases, Brims and crowns. WEEKS 11-14 Over to you! For the final three weeks, you will be encouraged and assisted as you design your own headpiece or hat, taking inspiration from whatever source you please, magazine cuttings, Photographs etc. From initial idea/concept through dyeing/selecting colours and styles to pattern cutting, wiring brims, embellishments until you have a completed one of a kind creation. Continued Overleaf 5 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 WEEK 15 The final week will be your opportunity to ask any questions you may have, put the finishing touches to your creations, and go back over anything you feel you need to hear and see again. Materials for Millinery course To begin with each student would need a minimum of one meter Synamay, a straw fabric that is used in most cntemporary millinery. The fabric is available from Beads and Bling in Temple Bar, and the Woollen Mills on the quays, One small tub of Dylon handwash dye (Torquoise) – €2. One spool of Gutterman thread (Torquoise) –One Polystyrene Head (hairdresser supplies) –Scissors. Sewing needles. One plastic headpiece comb. One meter of white spagetti elastic This would be enough to get started with creating your first piece, as the course progresses students may want to purchase more material in predyed colours, other haberdashery to their taste and requirements. Wednesday 7.30-9.30pm A4 Duration: 12 weeks. SUMMER SCHOOL PORTFOLIO PREPARATION Cost: €160.00 (not including materials) New BCFE Portfolio Preparation Summer School 2011 This summer school will be run for 9 days over a 2-week period. Many of the students on the course would be considering developing a portfolio for further study .The aim of the summer school, is to give students a basic grounding in producing of portfolio and advice an producing the work relevant to the students area of interest. The objectives over the 9 days are to show students how to conduct visual research, improve observational skills and to expose students to a range of material and techniques. All applicants should be a minimum of 16 years. A letter giving parental/ guardian consent will be required from applicants under 18 years. A maximum of 17 students can be accepted so early booking is strongly advised... If there are sufficient numbers a waiting list will be established and an additional course may be scheduled for mid June. All participants should bring a packed lunch daily and should have their own art kit consisting of the following: Brushes, pencils, graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels, acrylic paints and brushes, watercolours and watercolour paper, A3 Sketch and colouring pads. Closing date is Monday, 30th May 2011 Course commences Tuesday, 3rd June from 10am -3.30 pm daily in BCFE Arts Building Duration: A5 Week 1: 7th June - 10th June 2011 Week 2: 13th June - 17th June 2011 - 10.00am - 3.30pm SUMMER SCHOOL CERAMICS Cost: €300 New This course is suitable for individuals with either no previous knowledge of ceramics, who wish to develop skills to create unique ceramic works of their own. It is also suitable for more advanced students wishing to further their education in the art of ceramics and add to their portfolio. Cost: €180.00 6 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 A6 A-Z INTRO TO DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTION The aim of this course is to provide a fun filled and quick guide to all aspects of digital video production, from the basics right up to trade secrets,(things to know, how to be more professional), so that all participants have an introductory overview of the industry and how they could work within it. A DVD of final pieces will be provided to each person on completion. Wednesday 6.45-9.45pm Duration: 7 10 weeks. Cost: €300.00 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 Professional & Career Development B7 CERTIFIED PAYROLL TECHNICIAN - IPASS Course objective This course is promoted by the Irish Payroll Association (IPASS) the professional body for those working in the payroll function. The course is aimed at all those working in, or intending to work in, the payroll function. It is designed to provide all the practical skills necessary for payroll personnel to operate efficiently and in compliance with Revenue regulations. This qualification is the leading payroll qualification in the Ireland. Awarding Body This course is accredited by HETAC at Level 6. IPASS is a FÁS approved training organisation and participants may be entitled to FÁS training grants towards our programmes. Who should apply? This course is aimed at all those working in, or intending to work in, the payroll function. The course is designed to provide the skills necessary for payroll personnel to function efficiently and to provide a recognised qualification. This foundation course provides students who have not studied in any formal way for a number of years with the basic knowledge and skills to develop their understanding of Economics & Finance. Content: • Foundation in Economics (Microeconomics/ Macroeconomics) • Introduction to Mathematics and Accounting) Study skills & student support, Learning & teaching styles, time management and techniques for effective learning; using texts, directories, library reference systems, writing skills, examination skills, technical reading etc. Admission requirements: Students must be 22 years on 1st January 2010 and have the capacity to complete a course at NUI Certificate level. Cost: €950.00 CREDIT UNION STUDIES FETAC LEVEL 5 (L21935) This module is designed to provide the Learner with the background knowledge required to understand and work in the Credit Union movement within the financial services industry. The main outcome of the module is evidence of employment in a credit union, by the ability of the Learners to communicate the key concepts to members and potential members of credit unions. Cost: €350.00 CHILDCARE FETAC LEVEL 5 (D20121) This module aims to enable the Learner to understand the value of participation in art & craft activities to the overall development of children 0-7 years. Learners develop skills to plan and carry out appropriate activities with children and equip them with the skills and knowledge to work with children in the art & craft area. Wednesday B15 6.45-9.45pm WRITING SKILLS Duration: 23 Weeks. FOR JOURNALISM Cost: €350.00 MODULE CODE E20078 1 credit. One of the mandatory vocational modules for the Level 5 Certificate in Print Journalism award. Would you like to get a taste of a career in journalism or improve your work communication skills? Then Writing Skills for Journalism is the course for you. It’s been designed to develop the writing skills of people new to print journalism. Continued Overleaf 11 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 It will focus on five areas. Writing news stories, editorials, reviews, feature articles and law. You will learn to spot a story, do interviews and write to deadlines. News papers and lifestyle magazines that cover current affairs, sport and fashion will be covered. An interest in journalism along with life experience is more important than formal qualifications. Entry Level Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent, Existing qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences will also be considered. Wednesday 6.45-9.45pm Duration: 22 Weeks. Cost: €250.00 Special note re. SCC/SCH NIGHT. A full certificate is awarded once students have completed all 8 models as outlined below for either course. This can be done by attending 2 nights over a two year period. It is a part-time equivalent of our popular SCC Childcare fulltime day course. Students learn about the practices and procedures involved in taking care of children. Work experience is an integral part of this course and ideally, applicants should already be working in a recognised childcare environment where they can do their work placement. Those students not already working in such a setting will be obliged to find their own placement. Applicants who have completed Garda vetting procedures within the last 3 years must be able to provide evidence of this at interview. Course Content: Child Development, Psychology for Helping Professions, Early Childhood Education, Caring for Children (0-6), Working in Childcare, Safety and Health at Work, Word Processing, Communications, Work Experience. Entry Requirements: 5 Passes in Leaving Certificate/LCVP or a merit in Leaving Certificate Applied or FETAC Certificate. The academic requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+). Dates for interview will be set in early September and all applications must be received by 30th August 2010. B17 SCH - SCH NIGHT - COMMUNITY & HEALTH SERVICES Cost: €1,200.00 This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the area of Social Care which will enable them to achieve both the practical and the academic skills necessary for further study and future employment. It is a part-time extension of our popular SCH day course and work experience is an integral part of the course. Applicants will ideally be already working in a range of caring situations such as working with people with learning disabilities, mental health problems, and physical disability and with disadvantaged youth. Those applicants not currently working in this sector will be obliged to source their own work experience in an appropriate environment. Applicants who have completed Garda vetting procedures within the last 3 years must bring evidence of this to interview. Cost: €900 (€ 250 per module) 13 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 B18 ANIMATION & DESIGN WITH ADOBE FLASH This course is ideal for people who are interested in using Adobe Flash to create animation, animatics, storyboards and other design elements for TV, film, animation and online. Classes will cover various animation and design techniques using Adobe Flash. Monday B19 7.00-9.00pm Duration: 10 Weeks. Cost: €140.00 CHARACTER DRIVEN VISUAL STORYTELLING This course is ideal for animators and film-makers working in TV, gaming, film and animation who are interested in character driven storytelling. Classes will cover story structure, character development, use of thumbnails, formats and uses of storyboards in different media, the language of film, composition of shots for film, animation, TV and other media and timing of projects using animatics and pre-visualisation. Monday B20 7.00-9.00pm POST PRODUCTION AND Duration: 12 Weeks. VISUAL EFFECTS WITH Cost: €160.00 ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS COMMENCES JANUARY 2011 This course is ideal for people interested in working in post production and compositing in the film, TV and animation industry. Classes will cover post production techniques, compositing techniques and visual effects for film and animation using Adobe After Effects. Wednesday B21 7.00-9.30pm Duration: 10 Weeks. Cost: €140.00 ADVANCED 3D ANIMATION COMMENCES JANUARY 2011 ADVANCED ANIMATION AND MODELLING WITH 3D STUDIO MAX This course is ideal for people interested in working as a 3D modeller or 3D animator in the animation industry. Classes will cover rigging, modelling, texturing and animation using 3D Studio Max. Monday 7.00-9.00pm Duration: 10 Weeks. 14 Cost: €140.00 Ballyfermot College of Further Education – Evening Classes 2010/2011 INFORMATION ON COURSES Enrolments Enrolment times are evenings 6th and 8th, 13th and 15th September 2010, from 7-9pm. All classes commence week beginning Monday 20th September 2010. January enrolments will be held Monday10th and Wednesday 12th January 2011 from 7-9pm. Enrolments in person cannot be facilitated outside these times. Please note application deadline dates for SCC & SCH. Applicants after this date will be on a late applicant list and may therefore not be interviewed if the course is already full. Postal enrolments will be accepted from June 2010 and should be accompanied by course code and applicant contact details. Course applications for January and for Summer School may be done by post. All January 2011 courses commence week beginning 24th January unless otherwise stated. Payment Please review individual course information regarding payment, which may be made by postal order or bank draft. Cash will not be accepted and payment must be received before course commencement. Refunds Fees will not be refunded unless a class fails to form. In such a case, fees will be refunded by CDVEC Head Office in due course. Receipts The receipt issued at registration is your official receipt and replacement receipts cannot be issued. Statements of Payment if requested will incur an administration fee of 10 euro. Classes All classes commence week of September 20th unless otherwise stated. All courses and times may be changed at the discretion of the College.
