Dr. Chloe Salzmann, CGH Pediatrician, will be talking about our new effort to educate pregnant women about the risks of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and opioid use during pregnancy on August 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ryberg Auditorium as a part of the Growing Healthier Speaker Series. “Protecting Our Infants is the name of a new educational effort being sponsored by the CGH Health Foundation, in partnership with the CGH OB department and CGH Main Clinic Pediatrics,” said Joan Hermes, Executive Director of the CGH Health Foundation. “The alliance is designed to inform pregnant women and the public about the risks involved in use of legal and illegal opioid drugs.” Retail pharmacy prescriptions for opioids, such as the pain medications Hydrocodone and Oxycodone have increased more than 50 percent since 1991, with nearly a quarter of a billion prescriptions filled in 2013. Nationally, the number of pregnant women using opioids increased fivefold from 2000 to 2009, while the number of infants with withdrawal symptoms almost tripled. Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), also known as neonatal withdrawal syndrome, is a set of distressing physical symptoms in infants born to mothers who took opioids or other drugs during pregnancy. National surveillance studies have demonstrated that the incidence of NAS increased from 1.2 per 1,000 hospital births in 2000 to 5.8 per 1,000 births in 2012 - a 70% increase in only 4 years. In 2012, the NAS rate for the Midwest states (including Illinois) was 6.9 per 1,000 hospital births. The signs and symptoms for NAS can range from mild to severe and may include: • Body shakes (tremors), seizures (convulsions), overactive reflexes (twitching) and tight muscle tone • Fussiness, excessive crying or having a high-pitched cry • Poor feeding, poor sucking or slow weight gain • Breathing really fast • Fever, sweating or blotchy skin • Trouble sleeping and lots of yawning • Diarrhea or throwing up • Stuffy nose or sneezing To register for Dr. Salzmann’s FREE Growing Healthier program on August 24, visit www.cghmc.com/ growinghealthier or call ext. 5672.
