MISSION | To alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education. SUMMER 2015 You helped Susanna get the food she needed to achieve her goals and feed her family. From Immigrant to Graduate I came here alone from Cuba in 2009. Leaving my husband and two children behind, I was searching for a better life for us all. At first I didn’t even know the language or how to find a job. Then I started school at a community college. I’m getting my Associate Degree in Business and Management. For a while, I was working two part-time jobs and going to school. I worked about 70 hours a week while taking four college classes. I told my kids, “Even though I don’t know English very well, all my grades are A’s.” I always tell them, “You can see my example. If I can do it, you can do it.” My family came over a few years ago. My husband got his permit to work, but he doesn’t make much money. He drives a forklift at a local retail store. I’ve recently been laid off, so I’m unemployed right now. “My husband doesn’t make much money. I’m unemployed right now.” I didn’t know about the food bank at first, because in Cuba it’s different. Food over there is very scarce. We don’t have these programs. One day I looked on the Internet and typed “where can I find food?” and St. Mary’s Food Bank appeared. I said, “Wow, I can feed my family for at least two weeks with this!” I just want to say thank you very much. This is a fantastic thing that you are doing. In Cuba, they give nothing. I very much appreciate the food for me and my family. Thank you! 1 September is Hunger Action Month Throughout the month of September, St. Mary’s will host a variety of events to promote awareness and action to help our hungry neighbors in Arizona. It’s easy for you to get involved! You are invited to participate in any of our events or you can spread the word at your office, church, organization or through social media. Together we can solve hunger! www.stmarysfoodbank.org Create a Lasting Legacy of Hope When you’re making arrangements for your estate, please take a moment to consider including St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance in your plans. When you leave a legacy gift to St. Mary’s, you ensure that your commitment to fight hunger in our community will continue on after your lifetime. Our pledge to remain good stewards of your support ensures that St. Mary’s will keep any details of your legacy gift in the strictest confidence, and we will respect your wish for either anonymity or recognition of your generosity. As you plan for the future and your dedication to help your hungry neighbors in Arizona, please consult with your family, friends and, most importantly, your financial advisors. Thank you for placing your trust and partnership with St. Mary’s. Beverly B. Damore Summer is such a wonderful time of year, isn’t it? A time to take a well-deserved vacation. To spend time with friends and family. Maybe even to take stock of your progress so far at the middle of the year. But for hungry kids and families in Arizona, summer can be a bleak, desolate time. Many children who depend on meals at school no longer have that resource. Parents who have the added costs of childcare during the summer months struggle to pay the bills. Seniors living on a fixed income must make the terrible decision whether to pay for the added expense for cooling their home or for food. But thanks to compassionate friends like you, our hungry neighbors here in Arizona have a place to turn for help. You’re helping moms like Susanna (cover story) and Amy (page 3) get the food their families need. You’re teaching independence and job skills to people who need a second chance, like Dee (page 4). You’re ensuring that every hungry person can get the meals they need to make it through another day. During the summer, please think of Arizonans who are suffering from hunger. Help spread the word during “Hunger Action Month.” Come down to volunteer for a few hours. Take a tour of our facility to see how your gifts are at work. And, as always, your continued support is needed. Your gifts are the only reason we are able to help our neighbors in need. Thank you again for your generosity this summer, and all year long. With gratitude, HUNGER HURTS . . . especially during the summer. But thanks to you, kids get the nutritious food they need! 1in 4 CHILDREN in Arizona live with the threat of hunger. With four growing kids food doesn’t last long . . . But thanks to you, Amy’s family gets enough to eat. A my is a mother of four growing kids — ages 17, 15, 11 and 10 — who are constantly hungry. But her family situation is tough right now, and she and her husband struggle to buy enough food. “My husband is the only one that’s working right now,” she says. For Amy, having the extra food is wonderful. “Sometimes we have a problem buying groceries,” she says. “This helps out, so my kids don’t go hungry when they get out of school. The food boxes also really help our own groceries stretch further.” Amy’s children visit one of our partner agencies in the summer and participate in our Summer Meals Program. “During the summer, with the meals they get here, it helps out with the grocery situation at home. They get breakfast here. And when lunch comes around, they get that too. And then they do activities, field trips and stuff, so it’s just basically dinner at home. That really helps a lot.” Her 10-year-old son, Ricardo, says about the program, “My favorite food is the chicken. When I’m hungry, my stomach feels like it doesn’t want to do anything else besides eat. It’s hard to learn. Thank you for giving money to have food at the center.” 4,800+ breakfasts, lunches and dinners (hot and cold) are distributed at The Kids Summer Feeding Program each day. 100 SITES around the Valley serve as many as 5,000 meals each day to after-school programs, because of your help. 574,000+ children in Arizona receive free or reduced-price lunches at school. “When I’m hungry, my stomach feels like it doesn’t want to do anything else besides eat.” Her 11-year-old daughter, Lily, adds, “My favorites are the chicken wings and pizza. Thank you very much for the food, I appreciate it.” Amy says, “Your gifts help families keep their children fed so they don’t go hungry. Your support helps keep families together. Thank you so much for the caring and the compassion you have.” ? But what happens when the school year ends? 1in 8 free meals served to Arizona’s children this summer will be provided by St. Mary’s. Your generosity ensures that boys and girls won’t go hungry this summer! THANK YOU FOR CARING! Getting Clean, Learning to Cook M y name is Desiree, but I’m known in the kitchen as Dee. I first heard about the Community Kitchen program when I was staying at a local shelter. The first time I stayed there was 20 years ago. I was really bad off and on drugs. Then I changed my life and quit. This program really helped me. Now I know the pots and pans and knives and measurement conversions. I enjoy learning the different methods of cooking, and the real names for utensils. It’s just an amazing program. I love it! If it weren’t for this program, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish my dreams. It has kept me off the streets and out of the drug life. It keeps me on the right track so I can get a job. After I complete this program, I would love to work in a nursing home and have my own place. Thank you for helping Dee and all the other Community Kitchen students find their way! I’m sure I can speak for everybody that’s going through this program. We appreciate everybody that is helping. It makes our day to see people who care enough to donate and help us improve our lives. Thank you for digging me out of my darkness. Thank you for your donations and the passion you have. You’re making lives better. And by you making our lives better, we’re making our kids’ lives better. It’s beautiful. You Are Changing Lives Through the Community Kitchen! Because of you, adults living in poverty with barriers to employment are given a second chance for a better life and a productive career through the Community Kitchen program. This 16-week life skills and food service training program helps students gain the skills and confidence they need to get a job in the food service industry. Students receive classroom instruction as well as hands-on food service training in our kitchen. In the kitchen, they learn how to cook in a restaurant environment. They cook in mass as they prepare approximately 800 hot meals every day for our Kids Cafe program. They also learn the finer points of the culinary industry by working in our own catering company, CK Catering, with the proceeds going right back to the food bank to help people. It’s a win-win situation. Job placement assistance is also provided. With dozens of restaurant partners hiring our students, we are proud that more than 90% of our students find employment after graduation and it’s all possible thanks to you.
