Resident Camp Conowingo At-A-Glance (all grades are for fall 2013)
Make this a Summer to Remember, Attend Girl Scout Camp!
Whether you’re a first-time camper or a veteran seeking new adventures, you’ll find fun, friendship and memories
to last a lifetime at Girl Scout summer camp. Camp Conowingo offers a wide variety of camp options for all girls that
include themed specialty activities as well as traditional crafts, songs and campfires. Girl Scout camps feature unique
leadership opportunities where girls build valuable life skills that help them become leaders of tomorrow. They learn to
be more independent and self-reliant, how to work with a team, and how to take action to protect the planet’s natural
resources.
Imagine seeing the elated look on a girl’s face when she rides a horse for the first time, climbs to the top of the
rock wall, achieves the perfect spiral tie-dye, or sits giggling with new friends around a campfire. By participating in
camp programs, girls discover new ideas and skills. They face challenges and celebrate their successes when they
accomplish something they may never have dreamed possible prior to their camp experiences.

Day Camps
Transportation: Campers are transported to camp via bus
from various points in Howard County.
Day Camp is just one of the Camp Pathways that provides exciting outdoor summer fun for girls
throughout the central Maryland region. Individual girls can attend any Day Camp regardless of
where they live. Each Day Camp opportunity offers a unique experience with activities geared to
particular themes. Want to have fun, learn a few new things, work with girls or with other adults,
or make some friends? Many volunteers take time off of their full-time jobs to come to camp.
Parents do not have to be Girl Scout Leaders to help at any of the camps. Day Camp Training is
available. Plan ahead and join us at camp this summer!
The Day Camp Director makes placements, based on age and Girl Scout program level as of fall
2013. When possible, and at the discretion of the Director, a camper can be assigned to a unit
with a buddy who meets the same placement criteria. Day Camp is a time for girls to meet and
make new friends.
Harford Area Day Camp:

Resident Camp Information
Location
Camp Conowingo is located in Cecil County, Maryland,
approximately one-hour northeast of Baltimore City. The
camp is situated on 600 acres of woodlands and open
fields along the Susquehanna River. For more information
about this property or the other properties owned and
operated by Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, visit our
website at http://gscm.org/camps/.
Girl Scout Mission Statement
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and
character, who make the world a better place.
Camp Philosophy and Camp Life
Camping provides girls a rich experience away from home.
While teaching and enhancing self-reliance and selfconfidence, girls gain an appreciation of the environment
and learn to live and work together with people who are
different from them in a friendly,
fun and safe setting. Camp is a
great place for a girl to unlock her
potential and discover the world and
the great outdoor adventures that
await her! This unique environment
helps her develop positive selfesteem, leadership skills and social
skills all while having the time of her
life. The summer camp experience
is truly a building block in the
development of girls into successful
and resourceful young women. In
this outdoor setting, girls develop a
strong sense of self, gain practical
life skills, become resourceful
problem solvers, and cultivate
healthy relationships by living and
working together.
12
Girl Scouts of Central Maryland
Camp Program
All programs at Camp Conowingo meet the Girl
Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) standards of program
excellence by focusing on core activities that develop
new skills, following the National Girl Scout Leadership
Experience and embracing the traditional Girl Scout
camp experience. At camp, every unit rotates through
core activities each day, in addition to the specific unit
activities they chose for the week. These core activities,
which generally make up four of the seven program
sessions that the campers attend each day, include
swimming, arts and crafts, ropes course, rock climbing
and nature study. In the remaining three sessions, units
work toward unit goals and outcomes based on their
chosen program. While we do our best to ensure that all
activities listed for each camp are accomplished during
their week at Conowingo, schedules may need to change
or all listed activities may not be able to be completed due
to weather or other factors that are beyond our control.
Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE)
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) represents
15 short-term leadership outcomes, that ultimately lead
to ONE long-term outcome—“Girls lead with courage,
confidence, and character to make the world a better
place.” All Girl Scout activities tie to one or more of the 15
short-term leadership outcomes, and actively engage girls
through three processes—Girl Led, Learning by Doing, and
Cooperative Learning.
While at camp, as girls make new friends, try new things
and test their skills and knowledge, they:
•
Discover: Explore the world around them and gain an
understanding of themselves and their values.
•
Connect: Work collaboratively with others and build
healthy relationships.
•
Take Action: Make the world a better place.
For more information about the Girl Scout Leadership
Experience, please visit http://gscm.org/about/resources/
program-resources/.
Accreditation
The American Camping
Association (ACA)
accredited Girl Scouts
of Central Maryland’s
Camp Conowingo in
November 2011. Accreditation means that the camp
undergoes a thorough review process by outside camping
professionals every three years. Conowingo consistently
achieves the highest standard in the areas of personnel,
program, site administration, and health care. Camp
Conowingo also adheres to the Maryland Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene Youth Camp regulations.
Facilities
While the camp is primitive in some aspects, it allows
campers to connect with their natural surroundings.
Campers live together in groups, called units, based on
their grades and chosen programs. We have a range of
accommodations including Yurts, Glen Shelters, Platform
Tents, Teepees, or Lodges. Within each unit are sleeping
facilities, kitchen shelters, latrines, cold-water hand
washing stations, and a campfire area. Each sleeping
unit, other than when the campers are tent camping,
is equipped with a cot and mattress for sleeping. Most
units do not have electricity or flushable toilets. The airconditioned dining hall, bathhouse, health center at Pax
TU and swimming pool areas boast modern facilities.
Note: Staff members sleep in separate areas within the unit, but
are centrally located within the unit to which they are assigned.
Parent/Camp Partnership
The best opportunity to see the camp and meet our
summer staff is at the Open House. A successful camp
experience happens when the parents and camp work
together to make sure that each camper has a positive
time at camp. Using positive language and encouraging
your camper to be excited about this new experience has
a huge impact.
If you have any questions or concerns prior to the
summer or about summer camp opportunities, please
contact the Outdoor Program Specialist, Megan Hardy at
410.358.9711, ext. 284 or via e-mail at [email protected].
Preparation for Camp
Make sure to discuss camp and the adventures with your
camper many times before camp begins. A camper is
much more likely to be excited if you are excited too.
Review the following and make sure yes is the answer to
all the questions.
1.
Is your daughter ready for resident camp?
2. Has she been away from home overnight for more
than one night?
3. Is she willing to live in a rustic outdoor setting that
includes night sounds, bugs, animals, and using
latrines?
4. Can she shower on her own and maintain her
personal hygiene with some assistance?
5. Can she maintain, pack, and carry her own gear?
6. Is she willing to perform kapers (camp chores)
including the following: cleaning a latrine and living
area, collecting firewood, and assisting with other daily
living tasks?
7.
Can she live and work with people of various
diversities such as those of different races, religion,
and socio-economic backgrounds?

Health & Safety
The health and safety of campers are our primary
concern. All staff members are certified in first-aid and
CPR, and a health professional is located at the Health
Center, Pax Tu, at all times while the camp is in session.
Additionally, all programs at Camp Conowingo meet
the GSUSA standards of health, safety and program
excellence; in addition to following all health and safety
guidelines set forth by the ACA and Maryland State
Certified Youth Camp regulations.
As part of our dedication to the health and safety of your
camper, we require all campers and staff to submit both
a health history form and a completed health exam.
The health exam is a physical examination performed
by a licensed health provider within 24 months prior
to entering Resident Camp. In addition, to ensure
confidentiality and safety for everyone on property, all
medications, vitamins and supplements are collected and
secured by the Health Supervisor.
Meals
Well-balanced, kid-friendly meals are served in the main
dining hall. Girls also have the opportunity to plan and
prepare their own campfire cookout with their unit,
usually for Wednesday dinner. We request that all girls
drink at least one full glass of water prior to milk, juice, or
other beverages at lunch and dinner to ensure continued
hydration. Vegetarian diets can be accommodated.
Other dietary restrictions may also be accommodated;
however, parents may need to supplement acceptable
foods for our staff to prepare. Any Special dietary needs or
arrangements are to be discussed with the Camp Director
prior to camp and noted on the Health History form.
Camp Communications
Since Resident Camp is a time for the camper to learn
about being independent and empowered, we do not
have a telephone line available for campers use during
their stay at camp. Please be assured that the camp will
contact you with any concerns about your child. The best
way to ensure a successful and positive time for your
camper at camp is through snail mail or email. Campers
love to send and receive mail at camp and Camp Staff
encourage campers to write letters home. All mail is
distributed once a day to campers during mail call (usually
during a mealtime), and instructions for sending both
e-mail and snail-mail will be provided for parents in the
confirmation packet.

thunderstorms, we follow GSUSA safety standards.
Camper Behavior
In accordance with our camp philosophy, camp is a
friendly, fun and safe space for everyone. The camp
staff strives to create a successful and positive camp
experience for every girl. We expect campers to act in
accordance with the Girl Scout law and “be a sister to
every Girl Scout.” Girl Scouts of Central Maryland reserves
the right to send any girl home that exhibits unsafe and/
or unacceptable behavior or endangers other girls, staff
or property. We have a zero tolerance policy for violence.
Parents/guardians or emergency contacts will be notified
and are responsible for picking up their girl immediately
from camp.
Great Adventures 2013
15
Kapers
Girl Scout camp is a community based on everyone
respecting themselves, each other and their environment.
One way we instill this philosophy is every camper’s
participation in daily community chores, called kapers.
Kapers include cleaning-up the unit/living area, cleaning
and stocking the latrines, setting tables for meals and
helping to keep the camp clean. Girls in the horse program
will also help with barn and stable chores.
Camp Staff
Resident Camp staff are recruited regionally and from
around the world. We carefully select staff from within
the United States and abroad, such as England, Australia,
Thailand, etc. It is our belief that a diverse staff offers girls
of all ages the opportunity to meet people from near and
far and learn more about themselves and people who are
different from them. Applicants are required to undergo
background, fingerprint and drug screenings. Specialty
program instructors (lifeguards, horse personnel) have
extensive knowledge in their areas of expertise. Adult staff
to camper ratios adheres to Girl Scout safety standards
and are: 1:6 for Grades 2-3; 1:8 for Grades 4-5; 1:10 for
Grades 6-8; and 1:12 for Grades 9-12.

About
Whether you dream of competing in the Olympics, riding in shows, or simply love horses, we have a riding level just right
for you! This year we are changing our Horseback Riding Program at Camp Conowingo. At Riding Camp this summer,
girls in grades 4-12 will experience the joy and adventure of the sport of English horseback riding in a safe and comfortable environment. Conowingo’s equestrian staff have previous experience teaching horseback riding and will provide
close and constant supervision during all aspects of the riding program.
Starting this summer, the Horseback Riding Program will be broken into five levels of experience. All program levels will
focus on level appropriate horsemanship and horse care. On every full day of camp, you will have time in the stables
learning about horse health and care, and arena time practicing your skills in the ring. You will also learn the care and
management of horses, hands on, by helping Conowingo’s equestrian staff with feeding, cleaning and grooming. Additionally, campers in Riding Camp will still participate in other camp activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, nature
exploration and the ropes course, as times allows. (Horses may not be ridden in excessive heat. If this occurs, other
activities will be offered during that time.)
Please note: Space in Riding Camp is limited.
How will it Work?
Riding Camp will be offered each session this summer. After arriving for your session, you will complete an assessment
of your riding ability and horse knowledge. After the assessment, you will be placed in the appropriate skill level. All program levels will focus on skill development, progression and expanding knowledge of horses and horse care. There will
be opportunities to advance skill levels as you challenge yourself throughout the program.
At the end of your first week, you will earn a leveled Riding Patch, in addition to your colored bandana. When you wish to
challenge yourself and advance to the next level, you must pass both the written and riding test for that level.
Great Adventures 2013
21
Due to liability on behalf of Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, it is a requirement that all girls start at the beginner
level of riding and basic horsemanship. Girls are able to advance after successfully passing both the written and
riding test for that level.
The Levels:
LEVEL 1: Introduction to Riding
Campers do not need any previous experience. This program level is similar to the former “Pony Tails” and “Basic
Horseback Riding” camps. In level 1, you will learn topics such as, but not limited to, the basics of horsemanship, horse
sense, rules for safe riding, parts of the horse and tack, approaching, leading, grooming, saddling and bridling, mounting
and dismounting, basic seat and hand position, basic aids and horse control, circles, and reverses.

camps. In this level, you will expand your knowledge of horse sense and terms, and learn horse colors and markings, the
basic gaits, balance of horse and rider, adjusting the stirrups, diagonals, beginning the trot, exercises on horseback, and
elementary trail riding. Campers must be able to: ride in an arena with a lead line, mount and dismount with little assistance and maintain a safe balanced position at the walk.
LEVEL 3: Intermediate Riding
Campers need to be comfortable around horses and have some experience. This program level is similar to the former
“Boots and Saddles” and “Rough Riders” camps. In level 3, you will focus on areas such as horse behavior, equipment,
bits and bitting, horse care, breeds, rein aids, natural aids, canter, leads, transitions, basic figures, turn backs, and intermediate trail riding. Campers must be able to: ride in an arena without a lead line, lead a horse comfortably, mount and
dismount without assistance, begin demonstrating control while maintaining a safe balanced position at the walk, and
demonstrate correct reining position.
LEVEL 4: Advanced Riding
Campers must be experienced and comfortable with horses. This program level is similar to the former “Cowgirls Under the Stars” camp. In this level, you will grow your knowledge of horse behavior and care and learn horse psychology,
soundness, conformation, parasites, first aid, movement, blemishes, balance, improving the canter, halt and turn horse
at the walk know, the correct application of turning/riding aids, side pass, lead changes, basic lengthening and shortening strides, and trail riding. Campers must be able to: demonstrate control in a group while maintaining a basic balanced
position at the walk and trot, ride without stirrups at the walk and trot, ride with control, explain the aids for the canter,
maintain a safe, balanced position at a controlled canter.
LEVEL 5: W.I.T. I & II (Wrangler In Training – By Application Only - Ambassadors, Grades 11 or 12)
Campers must be experienced, comfortable and able to assist in the instruction of horses. As a level 5 W.I.T., you will
enhance your skills and knowledge in horsemanship by covering advanced aids and cues, lateral leg aids, turns on the
forehand, bending, lead changes, rollbacks, half halts, and adjusting strides. You will also assist with instruction in horse
sense, horse behavior, horse care, and balance. Campers must be able to: mount, dismount, walk, trot, and canter a
horse with control, demonstrate a secure balanced position, progress toward an independent seat and coordinated

Survivor Girl
Session 1
Survival skills meet science as girls survive their troop’s
(make-believe) camping trip in Yellowstone National Park.
Although scientists didn’t predict it, an earthquake shook
the troop’s tents for two minutes, broke the water pumps,
and disrupted the generators in the park. To make matters
worse, all cell phones are dead and the girls can’t call for
help. The worst part is that the troop’s animal-proof food
box fell down a ravine. As a troop, the girls must develop
a wind-powered crank to lift their food box, create a
water filter to clean water for drinking, build a shelter to
withstand any aftershocks, and design a car prototype
that will make it over the terrain to deliver their message
to potential rescuers. Along with learning how to survive
in the wild like an engineer, girls will experience various
science, technology, and engineering activities, such
as extracting DNA from strawberries, creating working
circuits, and launching paper rockets.
