Gratitude 2012 Report Table of Contents Message from the President 3 Who We Are 4 Our Exhibitions 5 Your Support In Numbers 6 Enrich, Investigate & Celebrate 11 “Learning about African American history is important because we are learning about our past…We are also learning that bullying others because of their appearances is wrong. Also, African Americans made lots of great achievements. If segregation still existed, American would not be the same.” — 2nd Grade Visitor Gratitude Report 2012 Visitors to book of the bound: mixed-media collages by Carletta Carrington Wilson were invited to add their own message to the victims of slavery in this installation piece titled chain letter of debtors. Photo by Robert Wade. 2 Message from the Board President Dear Friends, 2012 was a remarkable year for NAAM! We celebrated the opening of Bearing Witness from Another Place: James Baldwin in Turkey— Photographs by Sedat Pakay and published our first attendant catalog. Additionally, we presented book of the bound: Mixed Media Collages by Carletta Carrington Wilson in the newly configured PACCAR Gallery. After nearly five years, NAAM continues to optimize its space to better serve our community and public. The Genealogy Center was moved to the front of house for better visibility and community access. And our Museum Store also received a makeover to better align with our exhibitions and public programs. I am proud to report that NAAM welcomed more than 18,000 visitors. Over 1,150 were tour participants, 917 of which were students grades K–12. Lastly, after a nine-month process of active board and staff participation, our strategic plan was adopted and will now serve as a roadmap to guide us through the next five years of growth. NAAM is close to my heart. I applaud and thank you for your philanthropic support of our mission and programs, and extend our warmest gratitude. Board of Directors Officers Norman B. I pray we can break our mental chains, especially in Seattle.” GRATITUDE REPORT 2012 4 Enrich. Our Exhibitions NAAM presented four stellar exhibitions viewed by more than 18,000 visitors in 2012. Each exhibition was augmented by programs designed to engage, entertain and enrich our understanding of the dynamic African American experience in our own neighborhoods and abroad. Xenobia Bailey: The Aesthetic of Funk (October 29, 2011 – May 6, 2012) In this exhibition featuring fiber artist and Seattle native Xenobia Bailey, the artist’s imaginative crochet works explore the ways history, memory, style, spirituality and social performance intersect and incorporate a vast array of social and visual issues. Bailey’s solo show at NAAM transformed the gallery into a gathering/ viewing/participatory space where the domestically-charged crochet objects incited conversation and public engagement. The Test: The Tuskegee Project (May 26, 2012 – September 30, 2012) The Test is a traveling exhibition telling the story of the first African American aviation units in the U.S. military to serve in combat. It examines the major campaigns and operations in which the Tuskegee Airmen of the 99th FS and the 332nd FG participated, the aircraft they used, and the prejudice and racism they faced during a time when many doubted African Americans were fit to serve as fighter pilots. Bearing Witness from Another Place: James Baldwin in Turkey, Photographs by Sedat Pakay (October 20, 2012 – September 29, 2013) This exhibition shares rarely seen photographs of James Baldwin in Turkey taken by his friend Sedat Pakay. Piercingly intimate and beautifully candid, these images capture the vibrant world of acquaintances, friends and collaborators Baldwin cultivated while living intermettently in Turkey from 1961to 1971. Ed Drummond stands with his wife (right) and a NAAM volunteer (left) at the opening of The Test: The Tuskegee Project, an exhibition that tells the story of the first aviation units of African Americans in the U.S. military to serve in combat. Photo by NAAM Staff. book of the bound: mixed media collages by Carletta Carrington Wilson (December 15, 2012 – July 28, 2013) To close the year, we showcased book of the bound in our new PACCAR Gallery, a moving display of the artist’s most recent series of mixed-media collage which layers symbols of language, silence, bodies, and bondage to honor the unheard voices of the enslaved. GRATITUDE REPORT 2012 The exhibition book of the bound explored the untold stories of slaves through the mixed-media work of artist Carletta Carrington Wilson. Photo by Robert Wade. 5 Celebrate.
