2009 President’s Report
Thanks to the efforts of the USKBTC board and members a wide range of
actions have been initiated in the last year to protect and advance the interests of the Kerry Blue Terrier, breeders and owners! In addition programs
are underway to enhance the opportunity for participation in activities for
which the Kerry Blue Terrier was historically bred.
Major Actions:
The USKBTC Board took a strong position to defend the historical practice of tail docking. Thanks largely to
Susan Dunivant’s efforts a letter was drafted and sent to the AVMA in opposition to their position. In addition an article was published in the August issue of the AKC Gazette, KBT Breed column on this topic.
Anti Dog Legislation is rampant throughout the country and many USKBTC members have been active in
opposition to such legislation. An onerous bill was introduced here in Arizona and through continuous interaction with
our state reps. we were able to dramatically modify the legislation and turn it into an acceptable law, a copy of which
was forwarded electronically to Phil Guidry in the AKC Canine Legislation Dept. In addition, letters were written in
opposition to anti dog legislation introduced in New York and California. Thanks to Rose Marie Mais, our USKBTC
Legislative Liaison Contact with the AKC Government Relations Department for continuing to provide timely input on
pending legislation through out the country.
A committee headed by Don Wilde made specific recommendations for modification of the Futurity. These
were approved by the USKBTC Board. Carol Wert is the 2009 Futurity chair.
The USKBTC Board voted to support the annual AKC/Eukanuba Meet the Breeds events in conjunction with
the National Championship and at the Jacob Javits center in New York City. Thanks to the KBTCSC, John Garahan
and Gerry Yeager for volunteering to man the booths at these events.
USKBTC-CF will, for the third year be the recipient of financial support for our rescue fund from the Pedigree
Foundation. We are grateful for not only their contribution, but also their recognition of USKBTC efforts. Thanks to
Linda Pheasant, treasurer for Charitable Funds, for making this application.
The Board and membership have been kept aware of ongoing rescue activity throughout the year. The rescue policy is working well and affiliated chapter clubs and members have done a great job of providing leadership and
support to USKBTC rescue efforts. We still need SOMEONE to assume responsibility for co-coordinating rescue efforts on a national basis.
CHIC: The Health & Genetics committee recommended and the USKBTC Board approved USKBTC participation in CHF’S Canine Health Information Center. Margo Steinman provided detailed information in the summer
issue of Blueprints.
Through Charitable Funds the USKBTC continues to invest in fighting diseases impacting the KBT. We are currently
supporting CHF study 00613: This study relates to canine lymphoma.
Mentoring/ Judges Education: Thanks to the efforts of Charlie Redmon, Nick Fletcher and Carol Kearney two seminars were held this year, one in Houston and the other at Dr. Gerard C. Penta’s school in Pa. Both were well received
and the participants gave very positive feedback on both Nick and Carol’s presentation. This was done at considerable personal sacrifice on both their parts. Thank you both for your contributions on behalf of the KBT and the
USKBTC.
AKC Registration Pledge Challenge:
The USKBTC Board approved and encourages all breeders to participate in this program. It takes considerable financial resources to fight anti-dog legislation. A primary source of AKC income is individual dog registration.. At this
time fewer than half the puppies from AKC litters become registered. We need breeders to include the fee in the
price of the puppy and forward the papers to the AKC.
The USKBTC Board passed a motion to contribute $100 to each affiliated club holding a second specialty in
the same year. The board did this to encourage additional specialties.

A Letter from the Editor…
As the year winds down and another show season draws to a close, I look back on what has
been a very busy and eventful year. Although the numbers at most shows were down from
previous years, our chapter specialties still drew good entries. With many clubs holding back
to back events, it certainly makes the travel worthwhile - the wonderful "two for one deal."
And I think I can safely say that most of us still hope to see the numbers increase in the
months to come.
As usual, this issue is filled with results from our most recent specialties. The Gallery of Winners reflects the Pittsburgh, Chicago, Philadelphia and National specialties to name a few. I
urge you to submit your chapter club show win photos for inclusion in our upcoming issues.
What an effective way to show off your Kerry companion and share your accomplishments
with other club members!
You will also find ads for specialties in the coming year, OFA health reports for the past
year, a report on agility at Kimberton and a short article about our newest MACH3 Kerry. If
you do NOT see an ad for your next specialty in these pages, I encourage you to submit one
soon for the spring issue. Your ad might help increase your club entry, and motivate someone to attend another specialty. There are also reports about some of our new chapter
clubs, a CHIC update, and a photo montage of candid shots taken at our National specialty.
Finally, I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that this is your magazine. Please
consider submitting an article on a topic of interest to the Kerry community, or share candid
photos of your Kerry doing what he or she does best. If you have a favorite reference on
dog care or canine health, share it with us. As always, publication
deadlines may be found on page three of every issue. We want to

San Diego Club Update!
Our Bylaws have been conditionally approved;
we need to make two minor revisions, and
hope to do so in a timely manner. Additionally, our money coffers will be full - we have
had some large commitments recently due to
our Capital campaign efforts. Our membership application has been revised and is complete - and our Palm Springs Weekend and
Del Mar plans have rounded into formation.
The Newsletter is almost complete. At the beginning of the year, because of the dire forecasts of an economic depression and/or recession - Club members had agreed to limit the
Clubs activities in the first part of the year to
focus on a Capital campaign. We will attempt
to have our B- Puppy Match sometime in October - after Montgomery. We also have a series of Club Member and Directors events to
complete over the next 5 months. Our membership has increased over the last 4 months
as well.
News Flash!
Congratulations to Gigi Lorentz Reiling whose
name was just published in the AKC Gazette as a
provisional judge for Kerry Blue Terriers. Most of
you know Gigi as she has been around the Kerry
show world since she was a child. Currently Gigi is
serving as a board member for the USKBTC, very
active in the St. Louis Kerry Blue Terrier Club, is
also an active breeder and exhibitor. It is great to
see a new breeder judge as we need more judges
with a great background and understanding of our
breed. We wish her the best in this endeavor and
we know she will make a fantastic Kerry judge.

ing with several web designers on costs and design, and the plan is to have this up and running in the second half of
2010.
Work remains to be completed on combining all Performance Events under a performance committee. The plan is to
roll the Versatility/Combined Awards system into that committee. Hopefully sufficient volunteers will be found willing
to make this a reality.
Herding continues to grow in popularity and many members around the country are participating in events. Thank
you Jann Lane for providing leadership, information and direction to those interested in herding.
THANKS to ALL BOARD MEMBERS, COMMITTEE CHAIRS, MEMBERS and AFFILIATED club members and officers for their contributions to the KBT and their help and input during my tenure on the board.
The results of the 2009 vote for the USKBTC Board were as follows: Bob Nazak(184),William Kearney(183),John

Lower Michigan KBTC Update!
In mid July, the Lower Michigan Kerry Blue Terrier
Club met in Marshall, Michigan for three days of
shows. The fairgrounds there are the oldest in the
State of Michigan, are very well kept and a pleasant
place to be. Thanks to everyone who helped us put
our shows together.
Big thanks to June Hulit who sent us several really
nice items for our raffle. Nice stuff, June! And, the
vendors, wow, they were really generous to us.

Now, of course, this listing doesn’t name everybody, and I apologize for missing a few, but just

after showing.
The LMKBTC adopted a Constitution and Bylaws at
our annual meeting on Saturday, surely a big step

A Word from Charitable Funds…
As many of you know the US Kerry Blue Charitable Fund was established in 2002. Its purpose was to
serve the Kerry Blue Terrier in four important areas:
1) Rescue Fund – this fund supports grants used to provide Kerry Blue Terrier rescue services.
2) Health and Genetics Fund - this fund makes grants in support of research in areas of health and genetics of particular importance to the Kerry Blue Terrier.
3) Education Fund – the education fund supports education of all those interested in the Kerry Blue Terrier
including publications, websites, and seminars.
4) General Fund – donations to this fund are used to support the work of the other funds through internal
grants to those funds. Undesignated gifts will initially be held in this fund.
Since the Fund was established we have worked diligently to build the assets of the Funds while undertaking major support of the PNA Research being done at the University of Missouri. To date we have
awarded over $20,000 in grants to support Health and Genetics, Education, and Rescue. This is quite impressive, since our Fund is relatively new compared to other Parent Clubs whose equivalent organizations
are often decades older than ours.
Our current objective is to continue to grow fund assets while undertaking occasional substantial support
such as the PNA Grant. We believe the real key to long term growth will be planned giving that includes
the Funds in the wills of our members. Other comparable organizations have used this method as the key
to growing their assets. The reality is that we must grow our financial resources substantially in order to
having a meaningful impact and that means it will take many years to be in a position to have a significant
impact on our core areas.
You can help by considering making the Funds one of the recipients of your estate. In addition, support an
area of interest today. We have grown our asset base through small gifts and that will be crucial to our
future.

CHIC Update
This is a list of all Kerries who have been assigned CHIC numbers, dating back nine years. As you can see, all of the dogs are
listed as "new", since we have just joined CHIC. The list will be updated quarterly.
The requirements for a CHIC number for Kerries are an OFA hip X ray and an OFA eye evaluation. The information for both of
these tests must be sent to the OFA, and the results do not have to be normal. The optional tests are the DNA (or blood) tests for
vWD, Factor 11 Deficiency, and Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), and as for hips and eyes the results, which do not have to be
clear, must be sent in to the OFA to be included in CHIC.
Participation in CHIC, as in OFA, is voluntary; one does not have to send in the OFA application form, or can elect to have only
normal results published.
The OFA and CHIC databases will only be as good and valuable for breeding aids as the number of dogs included, and the results of their tests. Unfortunately most breeders or owners will not submit or publish abnormal results, which defeats the purpose
of these databases. Breeders need to understand that carriers, or even affecteds, can be used for breeding, and that the information
obtained from testing can be used by breeders to avoid producing affected puppies. The information should never be used in a
"witch hunt" or to demean those that have had genetic problems in their bloodlines.
All organisms have "bad" genes; the tests that we have can help eliminate or reduce the incidence of those genes or conditions for
which we can test, but only if breeders are up front about what is in their bloodlines. We all want healthy Kerries, and the wise
use of testing and CHIC can help us attain that goal.

four champions and a fifth published AKC titled get, and to the dam that has produced three AKC champions or two champions and a third published AKC titled get.

Liver Brownie
1 can salmon (undrained)
4 eggs
4 Tbsp. black molasses
2 ½ cups whole –wheat flour
2 tsp. baking soda
At least 1 Tbsp. garlic powder
At least 1 Tbsp. onion powder
Wheat germ, optional
Brewers yeast, optional
1 lb. liver (chicken is easier to purée)
2 eggs
1 pkt. dry onion or beefy onion soup
1 tsp. garlic powder
3 cups oatmeal
Garlic salt (optional)
Blend salmon, eggs and molasses together. Add dry
ingredients, a little at a time, beating after each dry
ingredient addition. Grease a cookie sheet. Spread
mixture onto cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes at
350 º F. The mixture will have a paté texture. Take a
cake icing spreader and spread a large spoonful at a
time onto the baking sheet. If you place entire mixture
on the sheet at one time, it’s much harder to spread.
Purée liver in blender or food processor. Mix in eggs,
dry soup and garlic powder or crushed garlic. When
mixed, add oatmeal and mix well. On a well greased
cookie sheet, spread mixture evenly to the thickness of
a brownie. Bake at 250 º F for 1 hour. Remove from
oven and sprinkle with garlic salt. Cut immediately
and freeze in baggies.

Our Famous Bourbon Garlic Liver Recipe
2 ½ cups whole-wheat flour
2 ½ cups white flour
½ tsp. baking soda
1 egg
¼ cup oil
1 cup peanut butter
2 tsp. vanilla
Water
1 lb. liver (calf, beef or chicken)
2 oz. bourbon (dog variety, less than $10 a quart)
1 tsp. garlic powder (or more to taste)

2 qt. Saucepan
Foil covered cookie sheet
Rinse liver and place in pan. Cover with water
and sprinkle in garlic. Slosh in bourbon and bring

United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club Versatility Awards
The mission of this awards program is to recognize the versatility of the Kerry Blue Terrier and recognize United States Kerry Blue
Terrier members and their dogs upon achieving titles in more than one discipline of competition. Current USKBTC membership is
necessary to be eligible for this awards program.

Eligible dogs will be submitted for award(s) by owner(s) in the following manner: Properly filled in application including:
Enclosure of a photocopy of earned titles as required
Enclosure of comments or brief biography of dog's accomplishments which will be published in the Blueprints (subject to editing)
along with award presented, including name of owner(s) and breeder(s). Photos may be sent by owner for inclusion in the
awards issue of Blueprints printed subject to room available.
Award applications will be accepted within the following fiscal year time period: July 31 to July 31. Members will submit applications during this time period. Those applications received after this time period will be held over for the next year for qualification
and presentation. Award presentation will be made at the Annual General Meeting in October (Montgomery County). Awards not
presented at the AGM will be mailed to recipients.
ACTUAL AWARD: The award will be a certificate suitable for framing signed by the president of the club and Versatility committee
representative to include the following information:
The name: United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club Versatility Award
The name of the Award tier (see below)
The registered name of the dog (with all titles, as the owner wishes it to appear on award)
The name of the owner(s) of record (at least ONE owner must be a current USKBTC member)
The date the Award is presented
ONE certificate will be presented per dog for each award tier.
A keepsake memento commemorating the award will be awarded at the club's discretion.

The Bronze Award is presented to the Kerry Blue Terrier earning titles in two different disciplines.
The Silver Award is presented to the Kerry Blue Terrier earning titles in three different disciplines
The Gold Award is presented to the Kerry Blue Terrier earning titles in four different disciplines
The Platinum Award is presented to the Kerry Blue Terrier earning titles in five different disciplines

* Please Note: Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Temperament Testing (TT) and Therapy Dog Test (TDI) along with other temperament
test certifications are not considered competitive titles. Therefore they do not qualify as eligible disciplines for these awards. These
titles may be included in the dog's name as stated on Award should the owner wish them. The owner is responsible for submitting
the dog's name as it should appear on the award.
NOTE: Accomplishing any of these disciplines may take more than one fiscal year to achieve. Therefore the applicant may submit an application along with proof of awards at any time in the dog's competitive life provided that he/she submit the application
by the prescribed fiscal year deadline to qualify for that year's award presentations. A separate award and certificate will be
awarded for each additional discipline tier achieved no matter what time frame is required to achieve that award. Example: Dog A
is already a Ch., CDX, TD. Therefore he will immediately qualify under (3) disciplines (conformation, obedience, tracking) making
the dog eligible to receive (2) awards (Bronze and Silver) from the club.
SPECIAL NOTE: To recognize those members who have achieved multiple disciplines in the past with their dogs, awards will be
offered to eligible title holders (with proper application and proof of title) retroactive back to and including the year 1995. All titles
(as listed above) earned are eligible for tier qualification provided that dog has earned at least ONE discipline title after 1995.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
1. A notice of your application will be published in the next issue of the official Club publication, BLUEPRINTSSM.
2. Thirty (30) days after publication in BLUEPRINTSSM, your application and any members comments will be submitted to the Board of Governors for
consideration.
3. You will be promply notified, in writing, of the Board’s action.
4. You will be provided with a copy of the approved Constitution and Bylaws.
This Membership process can take up to six (6) months or more, due to the publication of BLUEPRINTSSM three times per year, please be patient. Note that your check may be
cashed prior to your being elected to membership. This does not automatically elect you to membership. If for any reason, you are not elected to membership, your application
fee will be refunded.

CODE OF ETHICS
This document defines the ethical standards to which we ascribe as a condition of membership in the United Stated Kerry Blue Terrier Club (USKBTC). Membership is a privilege conferred by the Board of Governors, acting for the Membership, upon those individuals who meet the high standards set forth in the Club Constitution and Bylaws and
this Code. As members, we are individually charged with complying with this code and demanding similar compliance of all other members. We must hold the interest of the
Kerry Blue Terrier superior to our own in exercising the responsibilities that accompany the privileges of membership.
I. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A MEMBER
•
Members of the USKBTC, as Stewards to the breed, have the obligation to protect and serve the best interests of the Kerry Blue Terrier at all times. A member's every
action should reflect credit on themselves, the USKBTC and, above all, the Kerry Blue Terrier.
•
The approved standard for the breed is the fundamental imperative guiding our actions. Members have the obligation to protect and serve these standards as a condition of
membership.
•
Members must be familiar with and comply with the rules of the American Kennel Club (AKC); the Constitution and By-laws of the USKBTC; and (as
appropriate) the rules established by any member club of the USKBTC.
•
Members will observe the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship at all times. Whether as a breeder, exhibitor, or spectator, they shall conduct themselves in a
manner that reflects positively on the Kerry Blue Terrier, dogs in general, and the sport of showing dogs.

•
Members shall maintain the highest standards of health and sanitation for their own Kerry Blue Terriers, as well as for any other animals in their possession or entrusted to
their care. They shall demand the same high standards of others, members and non-members alike.
II. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A BREEDER
A Breeder shall:
•
Be guided at all times by the approved standard for the Kerry Blue Terrier and shall consider breeding only those specimens that conform to the standard.
•
When contemplating breeding a litter or providing the services of a stud dog, strive toward maintaining breed type and producing dogs of exceptional quality, temperament,
and condition. Breeding or supporting breeding to a lesser standard is not acceptable.
•
Use for breeding only those dogs that are healthy and free from serious congenital and hereditary defects. Refrain from further use, any bitch or stud dog that has developed
such a health problem or produced any serious inherited defects detrimental to the offspring and the overall well being of the breed.
•
Not use a bitch for breeding prior to reaching eighteen (18) months of age (preferably 24 months) or older than eight (8) years of age. A bitch should not be bred more than
two (2) out of three (3) consecutive heat cycles, nor produce more than five (5) litters in her lifetime. Recognizing the variations in heat cycles and sizes of litters, valid exceptions may exist, however it is incumbent on the breeder to exercise good judgment in exercising such exceptions.
•
Not sell puppies to pet shops either outright or on consignment; supply puppies for auctions, raffles, or other such activities; refrain from selling to persons whose intention
(either known or suspected) is to resell or use the puppy in a breeding program not complying with this code of ethics. The breeder shall ensure that the prospective buyer is
prepared to provide the same degree of care required of members of the USKBTC. The Code of Ethics should be provided and discussed with potential buyers as part of a
thorough screening process. All buyers should be encouraged to become members of the USKBTC and member clubs.
•
Promptly apply for AKC registration of the litter. Puppies should not be sold prior to reaching ten (10) weeks of age (preferably 12 weeks). The sale of every dog shall include a signed registration or registration application (Blue Slip), and a four-generation pedigree. Any exceptions to these requirements, or valid restrictions or limitations
imposed as conditions to the sale (e.g., no breeding) must be agreed to in writing by both parties at the time of sale. It is strongly recommended that a written agreement accompany all sales. Buyers should be provided with assistance and support in the setting of ears and in learning proper grooming. If the buyer is not located in the same area,
the breeder should make arrangements with another USKBTC member in that area to assist the new owner.
•
Provide with each sale, a record of dated and types of immunization given, immunizations required, and veterinary health records. Instructions should be provided, preferably
in writing, on diseases and hereditary factors related to the breed, proper medical care, feeding, and grooming. Providing a copy of the current USKBTC Handbook represents
a means of conveying this type of information, and is a sound investment on the part of the breeder. No puppy should be sold without either temporary or permanent protection against distemper-hepatitis and parvo. Puppies should have a veterinary examination, and worming if required, before sale.
•
Maintain accurate and complete records of stock, matings, pedigrees, show records, and transfers. Breeders are responsible for conducting research on their pedigrees to ensure correct ancestry, accurate spelling of names, and correct registration numbers. Breeders should be familiar with and comply with all record keeping requirements required by the AKC. Litter registration applications must be correct and promptly requested. Individual puppy registration should be completed in a timely manner.
•
Shall not engage in false or misleading advertising or other misrepresentations with respect to their own breeding. They shall not malign others by making false or misleading
statements regarding another member's dogs, breeding practices, or person. Advertising should not be worded to attract undesirable buyers nor encourage raising dogs for
profit.
•
Consider the growing problems related to excess dogs ending up in animal shelters and should exercise sound judgment and prudent restraint in their breeding programs.
Litters should be limited to numbers that are consistent with achieving a sound breeding program and the best interests of the Kerry Blue Terrier.
•
Be prepared to assume lifetime responsibility for any litter produced.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN EXHIBITOR OR HANDLER
•
Act professionally at all times in caring for and exhibiting any dog in your charge.
•
Do not engage in any questionable contact with judges prior to exhibiting under them.
•
Comply with AKC Rules and Regulations for Dog Shows, Obedience Trials, Field Trials, and The Guidelines for Dog Show Judges.
•
Exhibit or handle only those dogs that conform as closely as possible to the approved standard.
•
Do not indulge in the practice of making "kennel majors", or exhibiting filler dogs that they know themselves to be unworthy of championships, for the purpose of finishing
dogs. Such practices lessen the meaning and value of a championship and do not serve the breed.
IV. ENFORCEMENT
•
The USKBTC expects adherence to this Code of Ethics and blatant disregard of these standards will not be condoned. Violations of the standards are not in the best interests
of the Club or the breed. Such behavior can serve as a cause of imposing discipline or terminating membership if charges are brought before the Board of Governors in accordance with the procedures as defined in Article VI (Discipline) of the USKBTC Constitution and Bylaws.
•
Article VI addresses the specific procedures for proffering charges; the hearing process; and the rights of the parties involved. Each member is expected to be fully familiar
with this very important provision of the By-laws.
