2016-2017 Success Guide www.roanestate.edu Starting College Keys to Success Welcome to Roane State! You have chosen an affordable, high-quality education that will help you reach your goals. Your first step is to complete the admissions process. Use these Keys to Success to help you. 1. Apply early to give yourself plenty of time to complete requirements. 2. Remember, you do not have to do all the admissions steps in order. For example, you can submit immunization forms before you take any required admissions tests. 3. Start thinking about what you want from your education. Talk to professionals in the fields that interest you. 4. Ask questions! Roane State staff members are available by phone, in person, or online. No question is too small. Please ask! 5. Attend New Student Orientation (NSO). New student orientations provide a wealth of helpful information. Visit www.roanestate.edu/nso for the latest schedule. 6. Check RaiderNet. One of your first jobs is to set up your RaiderNet account. RaiderNet is your student portal, the place you will register for classes, check financial aid, etc. The alerts you see when you log in to RaiderNet are customized for you. Check RaiderNet frequently for your alerts. 7. Check your Roane State email. The college will send important information to your Roane State email address. Check your Roane State email often. Test scores determine whether students are placed in Learning Support courses (English, math or reading). Many community college students start in Learning Support in at least one subject, and tutoring help is available. To avoid having to take Learning Support courses, students must have the following minimum scores. ACT: English 18, math 19, reading 19 COMPASS: writing 77, reading 83, math 38 • Print, complete and submit a Hepatitis B Health History Form to the Admissions and Records Office. • If you are . . . The State of Tennessee requires students to provide proof of two doses of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine and proof of two doses of Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccine prior to admission and full-time registration (taking 12 or more semester hours). Check Roane State’s website for waivers and exemptions for each vaccine. • Submit proof of citizenship or lawful presence in the U.S.: Visit www.roanestate.edu/admissions for details. *ACT Residual test scores may NOT be used to qualify for the HOPE Scholarship (lottery). It may be used, however, to qualify for dual enrollment grants for those interested in the dual studies program. Paying for College Keys to Success The financial aid process can seem overwhelming. Use these Keys to Success to help you with completing financial aid requirements. 1. Fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. Note, this is the only place you should complete your FAFSA. The application is free. Never pay a service to complete your FAFSA. 2. Complete all forms correctly. Do not guess. One mistake on the FAFSA, for example, can lead to five more steps you have to complete. Be accurate. 3. Use the FAFSA’s IRS Data Retrieval Tool. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is a convenient way for you to transfer tax return information from the IRS directly to your FAFSA. 4. Request a tax return transcript: Sometimes, students are selected for what’s called verification (a spot check that information they submitted for financial aid is correct). If you are selected, then you will need an official IRS Tax Return Transcript. Print your transcript at www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript. 5. Pay attention to limits on financial aid. Some financial aid has limits that mean you will lose the aid if you stay in school too long. Stay on track to graduate to avoid hitting these limits. 6. Follow up. This is one of the biggest mistakes students make. Completing the FAFSA is just the first step. You may have to update your income information, provide documents to the college and complete other requirements. Check your alerts in RaiderNet and check your Roane State email every day. Your Success Coach is here to help For first-time, degree-seeking students, your personal Success Coach will help you with financial aid requirements. But, you must stay in contact with your Success Coach. Paying for College How-To Guide How do I know what my tuition and fees will be? 1. Log in to RaiderNet. 2. Click “Your Account.” 3. Use these Keys to Success to help you register for classes that fit your strengths and your needs. 1. See the big picture when it comes to your schedule. Did you, for example, schedule chemistry and calculus back-to-back? That could be exhausting. Think about your schedule as a whole. 2. Think carefully about online classes. Online classes are convenient, but they require you to be incredibly self-motivated and independent. It can be easy to get behind. Waiting a semester before trying an online class is recommended for most students. 3. Decide on a major within the first two semesters at Roane State so you don’t take unnecessary courses, especially if you plan to transfer to a four-year institution. 4. Plan your entire schedule. Go ahead and make an academic plan for your entire time at Roane State. Your Success Coach is here to help For first-time, degree-seeking students, your personal Success Coach will help you register for classes during your first year. Take the time to meet with your Success Coach to develop your academic plan. Choosing Your Classes Class Formats In the classroom, on the Web, or somewhere in between, classes at Roane State are offered in a variety of formats. Traditional classes Teachers and students meet face-to-face in a classroom setting. Web classes These classes take place entirely online. Most classes use Momentum, a Web-based course manager that contains your syllabus, test/quizzes, discussion boards, and course content. They may use online or proctored testing. Hybrid classes These classes are a combination of Web and face-to-face meetings. They may use online or proctored testing. Interactive video (IDEA) classes These classes take advantage of video conferencing technology to bring multiple campuses together at once. For example, your instructor may be at the Roane County campus, but you and your classmates may be sitting in a classroom on another campus. Accelerated classes These fast-paced classes typically meet only one night a week. There are three sessions of these courses to a term. TN eCampus These are very similar to Roane State Web classes, except that your instructor may be from another Tennessee college or university. It is possible to get an entire degree by taking TN eCampus courses. There is an additional fee associated with these courses. They may use online or proctored testing. Asking for Help Keys to Success Roane State has many resources to help you. Please take advantage of them. 1. Do not be afraid to ask for help. It’s common for students to need tutoring, counseling and other services. No one is going to think less of you for asking for help. 2. Ask for help early. If you are having a hard time in a class, struggling with your choice of major, or just need to talk, ask for help right away. Do not wait. 3. The first three weeks of your first semester are one of the most critical time periods of your college experience. Please, if you feel like you are getting behind or feel overwhelmed, ask for help. 4. Ask for help even if you do not think you need help. Drop by the Learning Center to have their tutors review your English paper, even if you think it’s pretty good. A little extra help never hurts. As students, you are one of the college’s best resources to keep the campus safe. If you hear or see something suspicious, whether in person or on social media, PLEASE report it. 1. Review safety resources on the college’s Be Safe website, www.roanestate.edu/besafe and on the website for Roane State Police, www.roanestate.edu/police. These websites include excellent safety information. 2. Report suspicious activity or behavior. Reporting your suspicion to authorities can be tough. It’s tempting to talk yourself out of it, to explain away what you saw or heard. Please, do not hesitate to report suspicious activity. You are not getting anyone in trouble. Roane State police and local law enforcement will treat your report fairly and professionally. Contact Roane State Police, (865) 882-4500 (Roane County campus) or (865) 481-2020 (Oak Ridge campus). 3. Stay informed. Sign up for Roane State RaiderAlert, the college’s emergency text messaging service at www.roanestate.edu/raideralert. Also, if the Roane State website were to crash during an emergency, the college would continue to post information on its official twitter account (@roanestate) and official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/roanestate). Staying on Track Keys to Success Starting college is just the first step. The ultimate goal is to walk across the stage at graduation, accept your degree or certificate, and move on to a great career or continue your education at a four-year university. 1. Go to class. Turn in your work. This sounds simple, but if you commit yourself now to attending every class and completing every assignment, you will do well. 2. Ask for help even when you think you do not need it. The Learning Center offers outstanding, free tutoring. Visit a Learning Center. 3. Get to know your professors. Go to class a little early or stay a little late to chat with your teachers. Let them know if you are dealing with any challenges. 4. Participate in college life. Roane State has a lot to offer. Get involved. Go to a play, concert or sporting event. Sign up for a study abroad course and travel. Get the most out of this experience. academic calendar 2016 Fall Semester Full Term Web Registration
