DATES HOURS TICKETS - River Oaks Garden Club
1. RIVER OAKS GARDEN CLUB FORUM OF CIVICS 2503 Westheimer Road The Forum, built about 1880, served as the John Smith Country School until 1920. Will Hogg restored it in 1927 as a “Forum of Civics.” Purchased by the River Oaks Garden Club in 1942, it is now listed in The National Register of Historic Places. This Garden Club headquarters will feature members demonstrating flower arranging and local experts providing horticulture information. 3. RIENZI – 1406 Kirby Drive Rienzi is the former home of Carroll Sterling and Harris Masterson III. Now part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, it has long been known for its fine European art, decorative arts and extensive gardens. John Staub designed the original house; Hugo Neuhaus designed the ballroom addition and Ralph Ellis Gunn designed its gardens. This year the Bulb Garden should be in full bloom and some new signage will be in the gardens, thanks to gifts from the River Oaks Garden Club funded by the Azalea Trail. Since 1998, Rienzi’s gardens have been a project of The Garden Club of Houston. 5. HOUSE AND GARDENS – 1904 Bellmeade Architect Lucien Hood designed this stately Georgian built in 1968 by Bruce Barnett. Framing the house are mature oaks. Stepping inside, one is placed in an elegant home that radiates warmth. Decorators Herb Wells and Jerry Jeannard have worked with the owners to highlight a splendid collection of American and English antiques, Mason Ironstone, and antique botanical prints. Balancing the house on the north and south are serene courtyards that extend the room into the garden. Azaleas and seasonal plantings by McDougal Steele complement the surroundings. 7. HOUSE AND GARDENS – 5027 Green Tree This warm Texas “soft contemporary” home was built in 1970 and designed by the San Antonio firm of Ford Powell and Carson. Nestled in the trees on a generously wooded lot, one is pleasantly placed in an inviting entry with extensive seasonal plantings, fountain, and stonework. Remodeled within the past year, the home is adorned in an appealing array of eclectic furnishings. There is a delightful collection of Santos and retablos. Because of the home’s nearness to Buffalo Bayou, the owners have long been practicing organic sustainable gardening. The gardens have been designed by Helen Grivich. THE 73rd ANNUAL S p o n sored b y the R i v er oaks g arde n c l u b DATES March 7, 8, & 9, 2008 HOURS 2. Ima Hogg and her brothers, Will and Mike Hogg, chose this 14-acre site for their home in 1926. The stately John Staub mansion is filled with her extensive collection of American antiques and art; the first floor features the centrally placed Philadelphia Hall. Bayou Bend is surrounded by natural woodlands and formal gardens, which have been supervised and maintained by the River Oaks Garden Club members since 1961. 11 AM to 6 PM 4. 6. GARDENS – 1407 Kirby Drive The terraced gardens of this charming residence create an atmosphere of old world elegance. The transition from formal dining terrace to wooded background encompasses a complete range of landscaping techniques. The dining terrace was designed by C. C. Fleming, Houston Landscape Architect in 1958. The upper terrace and overall planting of the garden has been continuous since 1976 by Fischer Schalles, Inc. Landscape Architects. HOUSE AND GARDENS – 1820 South Boulevard Facing one of Houston’s most venerable streets, South Boulevard, the house was designed by Carlos Jiminez, internationally respected architect and design professor at Rice University. The house’s L-shape open plan reveals a variety of horizontal and vertical views and expands all rooms, which encircle a large and contained garden. The latter is a combination courtyard, garden, and pool area enhanced with seasonal plants, shrubs, perennials, and a canopy of large oaks. The simple lines of the architecture are underlined by a palette of complementary materials such as oak, slate, and granite to establish a serene environment for daily life, a setting where the play of multiple variations of light enrich each and every space throughout the day. Seven Admissions: $20.00 Sales before March 1: $15.00 Single Site Admission: $5.00 (available at each entrance) No refunds on tickets. No admission charge for children under 12.
