this big largemouth bass
out of Old Hickory Lake.

WATTS BAR LAKE
Watts Bar Fishing Report
The water temperature is 88 degrees in many areas. The lake is at summer pool. Bass are being caught along steep river banks,
channel breaks, and deep secondary banks that are adjacent to primary locations. Jigs, plastic worms, crankbaits, and jigging
spoons are being used most often for bait. Crappie are being caught at night under lights. Minnows and jigs are being used for
bait. A deep secondary flat or ledge would be one type of area to target. Bluegill are being caught along river bluff walls and
around docks. Rockfish are being caught in the main channel along breaks and near humps. Bluegill and shad is the best choice
for bait. Catfish are being caught in the deeper holes in the main channel. The better bait is shad.

Public Input Still Being Sought Concerning Bear
Archery Season
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission is still seeking public input concerning the bear
archery season.
At the May commission meeting, the TWRC reduced the
2010-11 bear archery season to three weeks from the proposed five week season in Blount, Carter, Cocke, Greene,
Jefferson, Johnson, Monroe, Polk, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi,
and Washington counties.
The change by the TWRC was in response to discussions
related to calls that some commissioners had received
about the length of the bear archery season. While there
was some similar discussion at the April TWRC meeting,
the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency did not recommend shortening the bear archery hunting season at the
May commission meeting.

Benton Shooters Supply.
In reference to that change, Mike Chase, TWRC Chairman, stated “My concern is perhaps ample notice of a
possible change was not given for other opinions to be
considered. Given the volume of regulations and seasons
we had to address during our meeting, that is sometimes
difficult to do. We want to make absolutely sure that all
sides are considered before we finalize this year’s regulations for bear hunting.”
Hunters may send their comments to the following email
address: [email protected] or by regular mail to: Bear
Archery Season Comments, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, P.O. Box 40747, Nashville, TN 37204.

TAKE A KID FISHING!
SUMMARY:
The biggest news this week is still the catfish. The
big cats are hitting very well, especially at night. If
you want to catch some nice bass, the best time is
from daylight until about 10 a.m. or from about 7
p.m. until around 1 a.m. You can catch some during
the heat of the day, but the bigger fish seem to be
hitting very early in the morning or in the evening.
Early morning is a good time for the topwater bite.
Evening until midnight is a good jig bite and also a
good spinnerbait or crankbait bite. Nighttime fishing
is in full swing already, which is surprising because
it usually starts a little later, but seems to have
started earlier this year. Just about all the walleye
and a big part of the bigger bass are hitting better at
night. Crankbaits retrieved parallel with the shoreline are catching some very nice largemouth and
smallmouth. Jointed Rapalas pitched up under the
overhanging trees and bushes are catching some
nice largemouth as well as smallmouth. The crappie are slowing down, but can still be caught in the
submerged timber and brush. Trolling or float and
minnow are the two best ways to catch some crappie. You may have to go as deep as 20 feet to get
the bigger ones. Bluegill are doing well also, and
seem to be congregated around the submerged
timber and brush.

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife
Resources Agency and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
have established a permit agreement
which will allow the residents of Tennessee and Virginia more convenient fishing

and Virginia residents may purchase the
permit along with their state’s resident
license and fish all of South Holston

(“South Holston Permit”...con’t from p. 11)
Previously, Tennessee residents were required to purchase a non-resident license to fish in the
Virginia portion and likewise for Virginia residents wanting to fish in the Tennessee portion.
Tennessee residents can purchase the South Holston Lake Permit Type 63 for a cost of $21.
Tennessee residents must purchase the permit at Tennessee license agents. The permit is
required in addition to the Tennessee resident license when fishing in the Virginia portion of the
lake. If fishing for trout, a trout license is also required.
In Virginia, the permit is called “South Holston Reservoir Fishing” and is $21 there as well. Virginia residents must purchase the permit in Virginia.
South Holston Lake comprises an area of 6,336 acres in upper East Tennessee and 1,244
acres in Virginia. Anglers find good populations of smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye,
rainbow trout, black crappie, bluegill, as well as rainbow trout, brown trout, and lake trout.

Fishing Summary: Oppressive heat and humidity have kept most anglers off the water. Afternoon thunderstorms
have also discouraged fishermen on some days. Most fish caught were taken at night and at the break of day.
LARGEMOUTH BASS fishing moderated, most being caught early in the morning in the coves near wood structure or
on shelves leading to deeper water. SMALLMOUTH BASS were slow. Night and early morning fishermen took some
20 on the steep, broken rock banks, especially with live shiners.

CENTER HILL LAKE
Meadow Park Lake “Old City Lake”, located on City Lake Rd just off Hwy 101 S. in Cumberland County, is a prime fishing
spot for black spotted crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill and shellcrackers. March and April are excellent spring months for
finding crappie and bass on beds. April and May the bluegill and shellcrackers are easily caught using earthworms and crickets.
The lake has yielded 12 & 13 pound catfish in the past couple of years. Grass carp are plentiful and weigh in at around 23 - 27
pounds.
Creek channels and old stream beds are easily located due to the clearness of the water. The lake has had some stocking
and habitat management implemented over the last five years. Both live and artificial baits have proved successful on the lake.
The 300-acre lake is a protected watershed impoundment owned by the City of Crossville. Boats with gasoline motors are
allowed - however, skiing, jet skis, and other personal watercraft are not allowed. There is a special permit fee per person and
ramp that you have to purchase at the lake office if launching a boat. The park has a small campground with full amenities. The
campground boasts a new bath house and RV dumping station. Our new covered boat storage slips have recently been rennovated and slips rent by season, month, or day. You can also enjoy our floating fishing pier. The office has a few boats and some
electric motors to rent, ice, snacks, licenses, fishing tackle, redworms, nightcrawlers, and crickets for sale.
State of Tennessee Extends Cave Closure for All Public Caves to Protect Bats in Southeast
NASHVILLE --- Caves located on state lands in Tennessee will be closed for another year in an effort to slow the
spread of White Nose Syndrome (WNS) among the state’s bat population.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is among the state agencies which agreed to close all caves on public
property beginning July 1, 2009 for a period of one year. That closure has now been extended for one more year. The
Nature Conservancy has also agreed to follow the state’s lead to extend the closure on all caves located on Nature
Conservancy property.
The voluntary action closes public access to all caves, sinkholes, tunnels and abandoned mines on land owned by the
TWRA, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Division of Forestry, and the Department of
Agriculture. The closures are being extended through June 30, 2011.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, U.S. Forest Service and Tennessee Valley Authority have also closed
caves to public access on their lands.

(“Free Vessel Check”.. con’t from p. 30)
The Vessel Safety Check is a free check of a vessel’s equipment for compliance with Tennessee and
federal safety equipment requirements. The vessel examiners performing this service have been trained
to look for some of the more common problems, which might occur in your boat or its associated safety
36 equipment. Vessels meeting all of the Vessel Safety Check (VSC) requirements are awarded a VSC decal.
