Welcome to A Cele bration of E xc e lle nc e
A Celebration of Excellence provides public recognition of extraordinary public school students
and outstanding educators. By honoring achievements of these individuals, the Foundation:
Demonstrates community appreciation for the efforts of public school students, educators and parents;
Acknowledges the critical partnership among schools, home, business and the community;
Provides a positive reinforcement for younger students and a goal for which they can strive;
Involves the community and business in building awareness and confidence in our public schools.
Students
A Celebration of Excellence recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated their efforts in the classroom,
school and in the community day after day, year after year. Distinguished Scholars were selected on the basis of criteria
developed by high school students, teachers and administrators, including grade point average; number of honors,
advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours; activities; and community service. High school
teachers nominated Distinguished Achievers based on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership, overcoming obstacles to achievement, or service.
E d uc ato r s
A Celebration of Excellence honors the Distinguished Educators. Each student identified an educator to recognize
who has had a significant, positive impact on his or her life and wrote a short message about why that educator was
selected. The Helena Education Foundation salutes these fine educators and thanks them for sharing their talents,
knowledge, creativity and love of learning with our youth. They make a difference in our schools and community, one
student and one class at a time.
Th e H e l e na E d uc at i o n Fo u n dat i o n M i ssi o n
Public education is vital to the growth and prosperity of a community and the development of its
future citizens. By promoting consistent community investment in the Helena Public
Schools, we seek to provide students, staff and the community with rich and rewarding educational experiences.

Mrs. Wardell gave me a passion for science. She infuses
each day with excitement and creativity. An epiglottis
wasn’t just a piece of tissue and brassica rapa wasn’t just
a grass; it was a student designed research project.
Her class was exciting and stimulating for the mind.
She challenges her students to do their best. Her passion
and ingenuity is truly inspirational. If I become a teacher
I hope to be as motivational as Mrs. Wardell.

Mrs. Chamberlin, a business teacher at Helena High,
introduced me to possible career prospects, skills to
manage my money, and how to be responsible for my
own actions. I have been a student in three of her classes
in the past two years and I will carry her daily lessons
with me in the future. She got me, as well as my peers,
to participate in every class activity and find them
effective in our lives. My first job and all my bank visits
were successful thanks to her classes. I know how to be
professional and responsible in school, businesses, as
well as at home.

I used to think history was just a series of random facts.
Mr. Partridge’s AP American History class changed all that.
He showed me how our history connects to our present
and our future. Mr. Partridge's knack for incorporating a
rigorous AP course load with numerous jokes and silly
stories paved the way for my current interest in government
and politics. I find myself watching C-Span and checking
CNN.com just for fun. Mr. Partridge has great respect for
his students. His high expectations both academically and
personally, inspire me to be a more conscientious citizen
of the world. Thank you, Mr. Partridge, for being an
outstanding teacher and changing my life forever.

Mr. Hartman is one of the most dedicated teachers I’ve
ever known. I had never been interested in history, but
he made it more than just memorizing dates and names.
He taught by telling us stories so the information had
meaning behind it. He made all students feel important,
and was willing to help them at any time. There wasn’t a
day I went to class when he wasn’t smiling. Mr. Hartman
made me realize that to really make an impact on kids;
you have to love what you’re teaching.

Working to create a balanced classroom that is open and
enjoyable, but also a place of instruction and management
is hardly an easy task, especially when it’s a classroom full
of orcha dorks! However, throughout my high school
experience, Mrs. Mazanec has somehow been able to
achieve just that. Leading by example, and armed with
Fruit Leathers and YouTube, she has always been able to
inspire her students and bring out a unique amplification
to the music. While she would hardly encourage fleeing
one’s responsibilities, Mrs. Mazanec provided me with a
daily, 50 minute escape from the chaos of school.

school—unbearable. When no one else was there, she
was, pushing me to beyond what I thought I was possible.
Through her kindness and persistence, I have excelled
academically and personally, and I am truly thankful

Science is about creating dust devils with a hamster

raising trout and causing explosions. Mr. Runnalls

I wanted to. He inspired me to be a scientist and to

whole-tone scales, Dr. Hayslett makes every moment
a “teachable moment.” In the last 18 months, his
experience has revived our band program. His
expectations have inspired the pursuit of perfection,
and his extraordinary knowledge has challenged the
idea of “good enough.” I owe him so much, not only
for my personal development but also the development
of my band, of which I am so proud. Thank you,
Dr. Hayslett. Now get some sleep!

standing by the piano in the choir room, singing, talking,
and laughing with Dr. Mike. Helena is blessed to have
him, and I feel fortunate to know him.

Mr. Proctor brings such a great energy to the classroom
each day that his students are excited and ready to
reciprocate. He always asks for his students’ original
thoughts about the material and never has them simply
regurgitate given information. His discussion-based
class is always lively and enlightening. Mr. Proctor
has taught me to think critically and analyze the
academic realm as a microcosm of the world. It’s
obvious that he loves to teach.

Of the good teachers in my life who have really stood
out, there is one who has inspired me the most. From
my freshman year in Women’s Choir to being a senior
in Saturday’s Children, Mrs. Schulz has continuously
made an influence on my life though her excitement
and enthusiasm for music. She is always trying to help
her students to become better at everything they do.
Every year that I am in her class I learn something new
and always have fun. Thank you Mrs. Schulz for always
being excited to teach and helping everyone succeed.

Fresh out of kindergarten, the world can be a terrifying
place. Thankfully, Mrs. Johnson made the transition
much easier. I was a lonely, painfully shy nerd who
would bring things up during the “joys-and-concerns”
circle time that nobody else wanted to talk about.
Mrs. Johnson encouraged me, however, to speak my
mind and to be my own person. She taught me to hold
on to my individuality, to cultivate it. The three years
I spent under her care were particularly significant to
my development as an individual. Today, I’m no longer
lonely or shy, but thankfully still a huge nerd.

It’s rare to find a teacher who is not only great at teaching,
but is also a mentor, counselor and friend. Even more
rare is to find a teacher who doesn’t pick favorites or focus
only on those students who perform the best in class.
Mrs. Butler is an expert in her field and can teach even
her most difficult students with patience and motivation.
She treats everyone with fairness and respect, listens to
our problems, and honestly cares about our well-being
and success. Never have I had a teacher who I learned
so much from, felt so excited to see every day, and trusted
so much as I do Mrs. Butler.

Mr. Everett was the first teacher who truly made history
come alive for me. As an eighth grader in his class, his
animated lectures made the names and dates pop off the
page. He would pace back and forth, acting things out,
and when the action got intense he would grab a stool
to carry over his shoulder. The dynamic way in which
he graded his torturous tests right in front of the whole
class motivated us all to do our absolute best. Mr. Everett,
you are truly a distinguished teacher. Thank you.

My Pre Calculus and Calculus math teacher, Mr. John
Chart, brought excitement and fun to a seemingly boring
subject. Calculus is challenging and can be somewhat
dry, yet Mr. Chart made it fun. His entertaining and
different teaching methods not only made me enjoy
math even more, they inspired me to continue in my
study of mathematics and maybe pursue a career in
teaching math. Thank you, Mr. Chart!

There are never enough words to describe what someone
has done for you. This applies to Mrs. Stephanie Thennis.
I look up to her as a teacher, a role model and a friend.
I feel as though I can talk with her about anything.
She always has something to say that can make even
a bad situation a little better. She has been positive,
enthusiastic, and taught me that you don’t have to read
a book to learn. I will always remember the time I spent
with Mrs. Thennis, the lessons that she taught me and
the positive influence she has had on my future.
Thanks Mrs. Thennis!
