By honoring achievements of these individuals, the Foundation: Demonstrates community appreciation for the efforts of public school students, educators and parents; Acknowledges the critical partnership among schools, home, business and the community; Provides a positive reinforcement for younger students and a goal for which they can strive; Involves the community and business in building awareness and confidence in our public schools. Students A Celebration of Excellence recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated their efforts in the classroom, school and in the community day after day, year after year. Distinguished Scholars were selected on the basis of criteria developed by high school students, teachers and administrators, including grade point average; number of honors, advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours; activities; and community service. High school teachers nominated Distinguished Achievers based on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership, overcoming obstacles to achievement, or service. E d uc ato r s A Celebration of Excellence honors the Distinguished Educators. Each student identified an educator to recognize who has had a significant, positive impact on his or her life and wrote a short message about why that educator was selected. The Helena Education Foundation salutes these fine educators and thanks them for sharing their talents, knowledge, creativity and love of learning with our youth. They make a difference in our schools and community, one student and one class at a time. Th e H e l e na E d uc at i o n Fo u n dat i o n M i ssi o n Public education is vital to the growth and prosperity of a community and the development of its future citizens. She infuses each day with excitement and creativity. An epiglottis wasn’t just a piece of tissue and brassica rapa wasn’t just a grass; it was a student designed research project. Her class was exciting and stimulating for the mind. She challenges her students to do their best. Her passion and ingenuity is truly inspirational. If I become a teacher I hope to be as motivational as Mrs. Wardell. 2 A Celebration of Excellence Taryn Kristen Allen PARENTS Tamara and Tod Fetty Keith and Mandy Allen COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ACTIVITIES Small group studies at Mount Helena Community Church Congressional Youth Leadership Council National Young Leaders Conference Community service work for National Honor Society DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVER D I S T I N G U I S H E D E D U C ATO R Taryn Kristen Allen Darlene Chamberlin Helena High School “ PLANS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL Work and travel for a year volunteering, to pursue education in a medical or business field Helena High School, Money Management, Career Planning and Accounting Mrs. Chamberlin, a business teacher at Helena High, introduced me to possible career prospects, skills to manage my money, and how to be responsible for my own actions. I have been a student in three of her classes in the past two years and I will carry her daily lessons with me in the future. She got me, as well as my peers, to participate in every class activity and find them effective in our lives. My first job and all my bank visits were successful thanks to her classes. Capital High School, AP American History “ Capital High School I used to think history was just a series of random facts. Mr. Partridge’s AP American History class changed all that. He showed me how our history connects to our present and our future. Mr. Partridge's knack for incorporating a rigorous AP course load with numerous jokes and silly stories paved the way for my current interest in government and politics. I find myself watching C-Span and checking CNN.com just for fun. Mr. Partridge has great respect for his students. His high expectations both academically and personally, inspire me to be a more conscientious citizen of the world. I had never been interested in history, but he made it more than just memorizing dates and names. He taught by telling us stories so the information had meaning behind it. He made all students feel important, and was willing to help them at any time. There wasn’t a day I went to class when he wasn’t smiling. However, throughout my high school experience, Mrs. Mazanec has somehow been able to achieve just that. Leading by example, and armed with Fruit Leathers and YouTube, she has always been able to inspire her students and bring out a unique amplification to the music. While she would hardly encourage fleeing one’s responsibilities, Mrs. Mazanec provided me with a daily, 50 minute escape from the chaos of school.
