bill sofield is considered one of the most thoughtful talents of his generation. a rigorous
Modernist, sofield believes in the credo that design must live as well as it looks. his work is defined
not by a particular style, but by a holistic approach to design that addresses the requirements of
living and where luxury emanates from fidelity to craft. Materials and architectural details take their
cue from the context of the project at hand with careful consideration for function and a client’s
individual personality and needs.
his furniture and product design is imbued with a sophisticated respect for materiality and a concern
for how a design should improve with use and age to become an object of legacy. Mr. sofield has been
described by Interior Design magazine as a “choreographer” of spaces.
in 1983, Mr. sofield received his degree in architecture and Urban Planning from Princeton University,
following an academic focus on art history and european cultural studies. he is also the recipient of
the helena rubinstein fellowship from the Whitney Museum of american art.

his is an original world of possibility, quality and discovery. a three-dimensional, curated world of
layered contrasts.
a sofield dining room favors intimacy over convention. While the large tables are dramatic, the
round tables allow for more spirited conversation. chatoyance, the light and fire of the wood,
mirrors the liveliness of the evening. the chairs, themselves sculptures, are thoughtfully designed
from front to back. at a glance, a sideboard conjures images of elegant mid-century transportation,
whisking the party to another time and place.

is not only good, but allows the character of the room to reveal itself over time. known for his signature bed
designs, from the richly masculine Pullman to the more feminine gracie, sofield looks to these forms for versatility.
the bedroom is a place to sleep, read, work and lounge – where furniture must function as well as it looks.
so headboards are upholstered, nightstands have galleries, and on occasion, drawers might even be numbered.

sofield’s upholstery tends to be generous in scale and overtly comfortable. Many items rely on convergence — a
narrowing from front to back — to add a sense of lightness and visual interest. larger sofas often add a recessed plinth
base — a fresh, modern twist that creates the illusion of floating. sofield is known for his distinctive chair designs: the
normandie, Manor Wing and bottomley ranking as some of the most outstanding.
the accompanying occasional tables may be the highlight of the collection. With unusual forms, materials and finishes,
they are a recipe for modernism. an extravagantly shaped marble top and handmade metal base make the river house
coffee table an obvious standout. in much the same way, the ellipse and twig tables add color and texture. the iconic
tusk table is an enduring favorite and a gift from sofield to each of his private clients.

furniture and these essential accents. sofield’s accessories follow his broader philosophy that every
item, including the jewelry, has a function. the brighton hall lantern and the Prism candlestick lamp
are excellent examples of high-touch modern forms executed in superb materials. sofield often uses
his mirrors as placeholders for fine art to be selected later — a testament to the design, materials and
craftsmanship that make them art in their own right.
