They include parks, a swing bridge, a trading post site, hotels, businesses, transportation hubs, residences (lar ge and small), firehouses, schools, and churches. A unique site is a pedestal located on Las Olas Boulevard. Sites are listed by Map number. Bldg Address: 1421 S Andrews AV Year Built: 1922 Use: Retail/ Office Designation: 5/5/1998 National/ Local Map # 19 Croissant Park Administration Building – built as t he Placide na Administration building; two stories with a one story extension, stucco over concrete block, flat roof with parapet, ch amfered corner (2 story section) st epped parapet connecting one and two story sections and a toweret at the northeast corner of the second story parapet. Name: Walter E. Peale– Dixie Water Plant Address: 1500 S State RD 7 Year Built: 1926 Use: Water Plant Designation: Local Map # 20 Walter E. Peele—Dixie Water Plant – Mediterranean Revi val water pl ant designed by the firm of Weideman and Singlet on built to provide for the expansion of the city’s population in 1920s Name: Snow-Reed Swing Bridge & Tender House /Eleventh Avenue Bridge (Sailboat Bend) Address: SW 11 AV Year Built: 1924 Designation: Local National Register Pending Map # 21 Snow-Reed Swing Bridge – The 1925 Snow-Reed Bridge is the olde st operating metal pony truss swing bridg e in the stat e of Florida. It was manufactured by the Cha mpion Bridge Company of Wilmington, Ohio and installed by the Qu inn and P owell Construction Compan y of Fort Lauderdale. Hugh Quinn, of Quinn and Powell, was the long time agent of the Champion Bridge Company. Name: Las Olas Pedestal Address: Las Olas Blvd Year Built: 1925 Use: Pedestal Designation: 1/19/1996 Local Map #22 Detail Plaque, Las Olas Pedestal Depicts original gateways Las Olas Pedestal – built as the base for a gateway to W.F. Morang’s Las Olas Isles development. Name: Pace Furniture/ Archeology Museum Address: 201 SW 1 AV Year Built: 1926 Use: Retail Designation: Late 1970s Local Map # 24 Old Bus Station/Tibbets Building - ca. 1925-26 building, designed a s a bus terminal by Pal m Beach archit ect, Marion Sims W yeth; conceived as a three-story Sp anish Eclectic design with Be aux Arts details. After the 1926 hu rricane, the design was cut back to one story and the ornamentation simplified. Name: Old Bus Station/ Tibbets Building Address: 201 SW 1 AV Year Built: 1926 Use: Retail Designation: Late 1970s Map #23 Pace Furniture/Archeology Museum – this building was originally two stores with a party wall that were at some point combined into one storefront. The street facing galleries are not original. Local Name: Bivens Hotel / Colonial Hotel Address: 211 SW 1 AV Year Built: 1922 Use: Retail Designation: Late 1970s Map # 25 Bivens Hotel/Colonial Hotel – built for the Bivens family in 1922, the hotel is Spa nish Colonial in style with a street front arcade with decorative tile paving. The building has been considerably altered. Local Name: Alfred & Olive Thorpe House Address: 1001 NE 2 ST Year Built: 1950 Use: Private Residential Designation: National Register 11/1/2007 Map # 26 Thorpe House Interior Imagine living in a pre-fabricated house made of 3000 steel enamel-finished parts! Manufactured in an automobile/airplane factory in Ohio it was shipped and assembled on site in Fort Lauderdale! Alfred & Olive Thorpe House – Built in 1950, this is a pre-fabricated house mad e of 3000 steel enamel-finished parts! Name: Haehle House Address: 315 SW 19 AV Year Built: 1925 Use: Private Residence Designation: Local 5/18/1999 Map # 27 Haehle House – a small bungalow with front facing gable is a good example of the vernacular architecture of 1920s Fort Lauderdale. Name: Sam Gilliam House Address: 11 SW 15 ST Year Built: 1926 Use: Office Designation: Map # 28 5/18/1999 3/29/2001 Local National Sam Gilliam House – was built for lumberyard owner Sam Gilliam, one of the few members of the Republican Party among prominent Fort Lauderdalians in the early days of the town. It is a fine example of the Florida Mission style. The house was moved from its original site to save it from demolition. Name: Himmarshee Court Apartment / Dr. Harry Moon Address: 717 SE 2 ST Year Built: 1926 Use: Medical Office Designation: 11/2/1992 Local Map #29 Himmarshee Court - d esigned by prominent boom-time architect Fran cis L. Abreu for Mr. Pape, a s a winter home with in come, the b uilding is Mediterranea n Revival in style. Built as an apartment building it was restored with additions and is now used as a medical office. Name: Van Orsdel King House/Caroline and Larry Groshart Address: 1336 Seabreeze Blvd. A1A Year Built: 1951 Use: Private Residence Designation: 3/18/2003 Map #30 Van Orsdel King House - architect William (Bill) Bigoney e mphasized design strategies adapted to the climate; this house shows all of the techniqu es commonly used by Mr. Bigoney. The second o wner of the house, Dr. Willard Van Orsdel Kin g, was a medical entomologist, who had a distinguished military and civilian career. Local Name: William’s House/ Gilda’s Club Address: 119 Rose DR Year Built: 1926 Use: Non-Profit, Gilda’s Club Designation: 9/28/2005 9/28/2005 Local National Local Map # 31 William’s House/Gilda’s Club - Mediterranean Revi val in style it was owned by Mrs. Anna C. Wil liams and later owned b y E. Ge x W illiams, who was then p resident of the Williams-McWilliams Ice Cream Co mpany. The house is presently owned by Gilda’s Club of South Florida, a not-for-profit cancer patient support group. Name: Lester Hugh House/Russo/ Smith Address: 615 NE 15 AV Year Built: 1928 Use: Private Residence Designation: Local Map # 32 Lester Hugh House/Russo/Smith - is a one-story, wood frame, vernac ular (folk) house with a rectangular footprint. It is shown on the 1928 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of Fort Lauderdale. Apparently, it was one of perhaps as many a s 10 similar houses built o n the street at the same time; now, it is the only one of three remaining. Name: Leonard Glasser Model Home/ Robinson/ Cobb Address: 1109 NE 16 PL Year Built: 1952 Use: Private Residence Designation: 2002 Local Map # 33 Leonard Glasser Model Home/Robinson/Cobb - Leonard Glasser, contractor/architect/developer, designed and built the house as a model home for his Land of Sun Homes, Inc. development. Name: Lauderdale Beach Hotel/ Las Olas Beach Club Address: 101 S Ft Laud Beach Blvd Year Built: 1936 Use: Condominium Designation: Local Map #34 Lauderdale Beach Hotel - The Lauderdale Beach Hotel was the first large resort hotel built on Fort Lauderdale beach. De signed by architect Roy M. France, built by James and Charles Knight. Fro m June 1943 to January 1946, the U.S. Navy Radar and Range Finder School at the Hotel and the neighboring Trade Winds Hotel. Name: Harold Saar House/ William Taylor Home Address: 1401 SW 1 ST Year Built: 1941 Use: Private Residence Designation: 6/17/2003 Local Map # 35 Harold Saar/William Taylor - wa s permitted in April of 1941 shortly before the World War II wartime slowdown in constru ction. It is a one story, frame, side gabled, irre gular plan with a central porch recessed between two extensions. The house has a massed plan and is characteristic of the housing stock of the SBHD. Name: Smoker Park Address: 2.2 Acres Parcel Between New River Drive, SE 5 CT Year Built: Plat prior to 1918 Use: Open Space Designation: 9/8/1993 Map #36 Smoker Park- part of one of the first subdivisions of Fort Lauderdale; Home sites for many promi nent pionee r families i ncluding Ed King, Blox ham Croma rtie and Fr ank Bryan, first Clerk of the Circuit Court. Local Name: Old Dillard High School Address: 1001 NW 4 ST Year Built: 1924 Use: Museum Designation: 9/20/1991 National Register only Map # 37 Old Dillard High School – the black community’s first high school named for James Hardy Dillard a noted educator, presently operates as a museum for Black history. Name: St. Anthony School, Convent & Gymnasium Address: 816 NW 3 ST Year Built: 1926 (School) Use: School Designation: 9/26/1997 National Register only Map # 38 Saint Anthony School – Designed by Francis Luis Abreu for Saint Anthony Parish, it is Mediterranean Revi val in style. The school was completed just before the 1926 hurricane struck. The schoo l wa s largely u ndamaged and was a ble to prov ide emergency housing for storm refugees. Name: Bryan Building/ Shepard Building Address: 220 SW 1 AV Year Built: 1913 Use: Office Designation: 10/30/1997 National & Local Map # 39 Bryan/Sheppard Building – built by pioneer developer Tom Bryan the building was one of the f irst to be con structed af ter the 191 2 fire tha t devastated downtown Fort Lauderdale. Unlike earlier wood frame buildings it was built of brick to be fire-proof. Name: Stranahan House Address: 335 SE 6 AV Year Built: 1901 Use: Museum Designation: 10/2/1973 National 6/5/2007 Local Stranahan Campsite Local only: 6/5/2007 Map # 40 Stranahan House - is the oldest existing building in the Cit y of Fort Lauderdale. Fr ank Stranahan commissioned Ed King , the community’s first contractor to build a proper residence o n his lot. T he house is an excellent example of a type of folk archite cture indigenous to parts of th e southern United States; it is an ea rly 20 th century version of a type of colo nial architecture found throughout the tropics. It is now u sed as a house museum. Name: Bonnet House & Bartlett Estate Address: 900 Birch RD Year Built: 1921 Use: Museum Designation: 7/5/1984 National 11/19/2002 Local Map #41 Bonnet House - Hugh Taylor Birch gave a near thirty-five acre parce l to his d aughter Helen and her husban d Frederick Bartlett as a home-sit e on the o ccasion of their wedding in 1919. Frederick Bartlett, an artist, designed the house and outbuildings. With his 2nd wife Evelyn’s encouragement, Frederick undertook the decorative elaboration of the house, creating a unique structure. Name: New River Inn (H-1) Address: 231 SW 2 AV HD Year Built: 1905 Use: Museum Designation: Map #42 6/19/1972 National Register New River Inn – the h otel building was built f or Philemon Bryan by Ed King next to a wood frame hotel build ing owned by Bryan. It is built of r ough faced concrete block (artificial stone) made on site u sing beach sand. It had twenty-five guest rooms, dining room, sewer and irrigation system a nd was lit with carbide lamps. It is now used as a museum of history. Name: Progresso Plaza Address: 901 Progresso DR Year Built: 1925 Use: Office/ Retail Designation: 11/18/2003 Local Map #43 Progresso Plaza - Progresso Plaza is one of the few remaining large commercial buildings from the 1925-1926 “Boom” in Fort Lau derdale. In August of 1926 a post office was opened in the building to serve the “New Town of Progresso. The buildin g has been restored to its 1920s appearance. Name: Woman’s Club Address: 15 SE 1 ST Year Built: 1917 Use: Private Club Designation: 3/16/2004 Map #44 Woman’s Club - was built in 1916; designed by Miami architect August Geiger. Geiger introduced the Mediterranean Revival style to South Florida. T he Woman’s Clu b was the first architect-designed project in the City of Fort Lauderdale. Local Name: Escape Hotel/ Tiffany House Address: 2900 Riomar ST Year Built: 1951 Use: Former Hotel/ ALF Designation: 10/19/2004 Local Map #45 Escape Hotel/Tiffany House – th e old Escape Hotel is a 1951 Mid -century Mo dern structure. In 1948, contractor Bob Gill, of Gill Homes, was b ored with home building and decided to investigate Fort Lauderdale’s other economy, to urism. The Escape was th e first of Gill’s tropical style resorts, f eaturing amenities su ch as tennis courts, the first hotel swimming pool, nine-hole pitch and putt golf and “name” entertainment. Name: Goulding / Dallas House Address: 620 NE 3 RD Year Built: 1925 Use: Dental Office Designation: 6/21/2005 Map #46 Goulding/Dallas House - The Goulding/Dallas House is an excellent and rare (in Broward Co unty) exa mple of the B ahamian or Miami Conc h house style. The orig inal owners were Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Goulding. Mr. Goulding was principal of Fort Lauderdale Central High School; his wife, Katherine operated a day sc hool on the first floor of the building, while she and her husband lived on the second floor. Local Name: Needham Estate Address: 828 SE 4 ST Year Built: 1925 Use: Private Residence Designation: 11/16/2004 Local Map # 47 Needham Estate - Needham House is one of five houses Francis Abreu houses built on the New River during the 1925 “ boom” period . The fir st owner was John W esley Needham manager of the Broward Hotel. In L ater years t he house belonged to Sheriff Walter Clark of Kefauver hearing fame. Clark entertained such notables as Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill at the house. Name: Southern Bell Telephone Exchange Bldg/ The Exchange Bldg Address: 115 NE 3 AV Year Built: 1948 Use: Condominium Designation: 1/18/2006 Map # 48 Southern Bell Exchange Building – designed by Schult z & Armistead the Sout hern Bell Telephone Exchange building was built in 1948, the building was only three stories; upper stories were added at a later date. Local Name: Reed/ Manuel House Address: 543 Victoria Park RD Year Built: 1927 Use: Single Family House Designation: 12/20/2005 Local Ma # 49 Reed/Manuel House - built by Captain William J. Reed, a four-te rm ma yor of Fort Lauderdale and department store entrepreneur. In the lat e 1930s the home was sold to Colonel Thomas B. Manuel, also a Fort Lauderdale mayor and later the Chairman of the Florida State Turnpike Authority. A fine exa mple of the vernacular or folk architect ure it also has significance as the home of two men who were imp ortant in the development of the town and the region. Name: Mary Cutler House Address: 1500 NE 4 PL Year Built: 1941 Use: Child Care Designation: 12/20/2005 Map # 50 Mary Cutler House - this handso me folk styl e house was built with day labor and without a g eneral contractor. It is possible, given the sop histication of the design, that the owner/builder purch ased plans from one of the man y architectural services of that time. Local Name: Phil Resnick Address: 742 NE 17 AV Year Built: 1948 Use: Single Family Residential Designation: 11/7/2007 Local Map # 51 Phil Resnick - This ma sonry verna cular one-story ho me is first listed in the 1944 Fort Lauderdale City Directo ry located in the Victoria Courts subdivision, the Resnick ho use was built much later than the designated cottages but references the cottages in style. Name: South Side Fire Station/ Tolber Law Office Address: 700 S Andrews AV Year Built: 1925 Use: Office Designation: 12/20/2005 Map # 52 South Side Fire Station – was built in the Spanish Eclectic style in 1925 as the second fire station for the City of Fort Lauderdale. The station served the Croissant Park development and other boom time developments on the south side of the city. Local Name: Annie Beck House Address: 1329 N Dixie Hwy Year Built: 1916 Use: Designation: Local Pending Map # 53 Anne Beck House built in 1916 it is a handsome example of a craftsman-style bungalow. Annie Beck and her husband Alfred were pioneer settlers an d active in t heir community. Name: John Kirchner House Address: 1610 NE 2nd CT Year Built: 1928 Use: Residence Designation: Local Map # 54 John Kirchner House- This two-story apart ment building constructed in 1928 is a very good example of the Spanish Eclectic style of 1920s Fort Lauderdale. Name: Avis McSmith House and Kindergarten Address: 611 NW 15th AV Year Built: 1949 Use: Private residence Designation: 2010 Local Map # 55 The house is a good example of post war construction. Mrs. McSmith, an educator, opened one of the first kindergartens to serve the African American community of Fort Lauderdale. Name: Coca Cola Bottling Plant Address: 644 South Andrews Avenue Year Built: 1939 Use: Formerly Commercial/Vacant Designation: Local Map # 56 Designed by Courtney Stewart in the Spanish Eclectic style this 2 story building with square tower was duplicated several times elsewhere in Florida as the iconic Coca Cola brand expanded manufacture and distribution throughout the state in the twentieth century. Name: Link Trainer Bldg. Address: 4050 SW 14 AV Use: Museum Designation: 5/20/1998 National Register Only Map # Link Trainer Building – No map number. This is the U.S. Naval Air Station where World War II pilot s were train ed to fly the “TBM Avenger Aircr aft” using instruments.These torpedo bo mbers had folding wing s and were used on a ircraft carrie rs. The most famous graduate was former Pres. George Herbert Walker-Bush. SAILBOAT BEND HISTORIC DISTRICT The Sailboat Bend District is located in the southwestern section of the city. It is the largest of the three di stricts and has over 550 bui ldings. It is the old est neighborhood in the c ity and dates from t he early 1900s until the 1950s. The majority of the houses are s mall one-s tory vernacul ar residences that add elements from Bungalow, Mission, or Medi terranean Revival style det ails. These were popular styles found in adjacent communities and throughout the United States. The inventory also includes s ome larger homes located alon g the New River. There are several Key Contributing sites associated with the growth of this community including the Swing Bridge, the West Side Fire Station and the West Side School. T hese three sites ar e also listed as local individual landmarks. MAP 1. HISTORIC DISTRICT (H-1) The Himmarshee Historic District is t he oldest sec tion of the commercial th downtown. It includes early 20 century businesses located along the north and south sides of Himmarshee Street. The district is bounded on the east by the railroad tracks, the New River on the s outh, and the west side of Nugent Ave. and portions o f the north s ide of SW 2 nd St. There are about 17 pr operties here including the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society in the Hoch He ritage Center, the Philemon Bryan House, the King-Cromartie House and the rest ored New Riv er Inn wh ich operates as an historical museum. In addition, the historic Bryant Homes operates as the River House Restaurant. A replica of the first Fort Laude rdale school house has been reconstructed within the district. MAP 2.
