PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION
Johnson Hall at St. Mary’s Church in Clinton Hill will be filled with the sounds
of jazz and the aroma of food on the first Friday in June. That evening, Jazz Café at
St. Mary’s is proud to host The Jeff Newell Quartet with guest vocalist, Dorian Lake,
on June 6. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with music beginning at 8:30 p.m.
The Quartet will perform two sets of music, and food and drink will be served
at 7:30 p.m. before the first set and again between sets. The donation for this evening
of music and cuisine is $30. Advance tickets are available from any Vestry member
of St. Mary’s or at the church office. Tickets can also be reserved at the door by
calling the church office at (718) 638–2090 (Tu, Wed, Thu 10am–4pm) or by sending
an email to [email protected].
Food is served at St. Mary’s for many occasions, including at most special
events and always after the Sunday morning service. Jazz Café provides an
opportunity for the parish to share it’s cuisine with a wider group of people. The food
served at St. Mary’s represents a melting pot of cultures, especially Carribean island
countries, like Barbados and Jamaica.
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church is located at the corner of Classon and Willoughby
Avenues, across the street from Pratt Institute. It is easily reached by car from the
Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278), by subway (G-Train to Classon Avenue), and

by bus (B38 down DeKalb or Lafayette Avenue to Classon Avenue or B54 on Myrtle
Avenue to Classon).
St. Mary’s is proud to have received a grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council to
support two programs this year: A Commuunity Inauguration Celebration —
Martin Luther King Day, which took place on January 20, and for Jazz Café. These
events are made possible with public funds from the Decentralization Program of
the New York State Council on the Arts, administered in Kings County by Brooklyn
Arts Council (BAC). St. Mary’s is very appreciative of BAC’s support for artistic and
cultural outreach to the community and, specifically, for supporting St. Mary’s
offerings.
Jeff Newell — a resident of Brooklyn — gained his music degree. conferred
with distinction. from the University of Nebraska in 1978. His on-the-job experience
began as a member of the Neoclassic Jazz Orchestra, touring Europe fresh out of
college. With a year of graduate school under his belt, he moved to Chicago to
continue his education through additional study and, in a practical way, through
playing in jazz clubs and festivals.
Jeff became a constant fixture in Chicago’s jazz venues and worked with many
of its best-known musicians. In April of 1993, the Jeff Newell Quartet was awarded
second place in the Cognac Hennessy Jazz Search "Best of Chicago" contest. Jeff

performed often on Chicago Jazz Festival stages — including with his own groups in
1993 and 1995 — and also fronted his own band on the jazz stage of ChicagoFest. He
has brought his sound to the Newport Jazz Festival in Madarao, Japan, the Mellon
Jazz Festival in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the Jazz Oasis at Milwaukee's
Summerfest, the Clocktower Jazz Festival in Rockford, Illinois, the Elkhart Jazz
Festival, and many other Midwest jazz events.
Jeff spent two years studying with acclaimed jazz performer and educator
Bunky Green and a year with tenor man Joe Daley. In 1989 he received a National
Endowment for the Arts jazz study fellowship to study in New York with master jazz
musician David Leibman. In the summer of 1994, he relocated to New York City to
take advantage of its rich jazz opportunities.
Jeff has played on stage or recorded alongside such jazz names as Ron Carter,
Cedar Walton, Phil Woods, Greg Osby, Charles Earland, Houston Person, Johnny
Coles, Von Freeman, Ira Sullivan, Paul Wertico, Paul Smoker, Bobby Broom, Fareed
Haque, Richie Cole, Don Menza, Terrance Blanchard, Bobby Watson and, most
recently, with Kevin Mahogany and the Birdland Big Band.
In 1994, Jeff formed the critically acclaimed New-Trad Octet as a vehicle for
his arranging skills and to pursue his interest in the rich musical history of New
Orleans. Jeff continues to keep the Octet and his Quartet busy in clubs and festivals

throughout the country, including New-Trad Octet’s performance on NBC’s Today
Show in March of 2003.
In addition to giving clinics, master classes, and adjudicating student jazz
festivals, Jeff has been a faculty member at the American Conservatory of Music, and
currently he is the Coordinator of the Jazz Faculty at the Brooklyn Music School,
teaching woodwinds and jazz improvisation and coaching jazz ensembles. Most
recently, he developed and implemented a residency program presented in Brooklyn
schools, “Sousa, Music of All Americans,” made possible by grants from Chamber
Music American, The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, BRIC Information and
Culture, and the Brooklyn Arts Council, (BAC). Jeff served as Worship Leader and
Coordinator of Worship at the New Baptist Temple in Brooklyn for five years, and is
currently Director of Music for Resurrection — Clinton Hill Church.
Dorian Lake — vocalist, percussionist, composer and arranger — has broad
experience in many styles, forms, and genres of music. His compositions range from
popular songs for jazz and rock bands to works for concert band, choir and solo voice.
Mr. Lake is a founding member of the bands Heavy Weather, Sons of Origin and Tom
Cintula & The Buffalo 24, and he leads his own jazz group, The Mode Collective,
keeping him actively and creatively engaged in all kinds of popular music.

On stage, Mr. Lake’s opera credits include the roles of Uberto in Pergolesi’s La
Serva Padrona, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Alfonso in Cosí fan tutte and,
notably, Signor Giuseppe in a new opera, Il Negozio di Campagna, a role created
expressly for him. Mr. Lake musical theatre performances include Hair and the
off-Broadway play, Sid's Dream.
Among Mr. Lake’s recent concert soloist credits are Brahms’ Ein Deutsches
Requiem and Duruflé’s Requiem. He served as a chorister with and regular soloist for
Schola Cantorum on Hudson and Voyces, and he is currently Head Cantor at St. Paul's
Episcopal Church, Staten Island. Among recent events for which he has been a
featured artist in tributes to black music, Mr. Lake was a singer and reader during this
past year’s Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day — A Community Celebration at St.
Mary’s Church, Clinton Hill, and a soloist at the prestigious Blues for Good Friday
production at St. Mark’s in the Bowery in Manhattan.
His wide range of interests and abilities have led to performances in richly
diverse venues throughout the Northeast U.S. and in Germany— from Carnegie Hall,
the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and St. Patrick's Cathedral to B.B.King's, The
Bitter End, and CBGB's.
Mark Victor Smith, Organist and Director of Music at St. Mary’s, helps
produce and offer concerts (including A Potpourri of Song℠ events) and other events

at St. Mary’s and elsewhere. Together with Fr. Jerry Keucher, Priest in Charge, he
coordinates and leads parish music ministry every Sunday morning, including
offerings of special music like Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater during the parish’s Good
Friday service. He continues to perform a role now and then — most recently the role
of Figaro in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia — performs as a soloist and accompanist
on organ and piano, and sings in concerts. Mark Victor also coaches and teaches
voice, and teaches piano.
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church continues to reach out to the community
through its religious services, concerts, and social events. Most notably, the church’s
musical and cultural outreach to the community has been growing in scope over the
past two years. St. Mary’s is situated so as to serve both the Clinton Hill and BedfordStuyvessant neighborhoods, as well as being convenient to the rest of Brooklyn and
Metropolitan New York City, close to public transit and right off of the
Brooklyn/Queens Expressway (I-278).
Among other outreach, the parish runs a
Salvage Bureau that collects used and unwanted clothing, distributing what is in good
condition to those in need. St. Mary’s church building is a registered landmark, a
significant architectural and historical structure in Brooklyn.
