MUSEUM CLOSED Thursday and Friday, November 28-29 Fairy Tales in Miniature: Russian Lacquer Boxes from the Lucy Maxym Collection September 14 – October 27, 2013 These delicate, hand-made pieces take at least 45-60 days to create from the papier-mâché box, to the lacquering, to the detailed miniature painting. Each is a unique work of art. The subject of many of these miniature works of art is Russian fairy tales and legends. Russian fairy tales are long and complex and, like many fairy tales have many different variations. Most of the stories will seem very familiar to you. They resemble the fairy tales that we grew up with except they have more gruesome endings for the “bad guy”! All of the boxes in this exhibit come from a recent gift to the museum from the Toy and Miniature Museum in Kansas City. These were all collected by Lucy Maxym, one of the authorities on Russian lacquer boxes. Two of her books will be available in the gallery. Miniature painting on papier-mâché started in Russia in the late 18th century in the village of Danilkovo, not far from Moscow. Most of the pieces in this collection were collected or commissioned by Lucy herself in the 1970s and 80s in the then Soviet Union. There are four villages that are known for their lacquer boxes: Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui, and Mstera. These detailed pieces transport us into that far away land where firebirds live and anything is possible. You can continue your journey to these far away lands by joining us to hear storyteller Mary Grace Ketner. She will regale us with some of her favorite Russian fairy tales at 7pm on Friday, October 4. Bringing the World to Oklahoma: Once Upon a Time in Russia Friday, December 6, 6pm 31st Annual Fundraising Gala Derald Swineford: Christmas on the Plains Exhibit: December 17, 2013 – January 19, 2014 St. Basil’s Cathedral by V. Svyachinko Salt Cellar The Humpbacked Pony by N. Zimin 1900 W. MacArthur, Shawnee, OK 74804 (405)878-5300 www.mgmoa.org Museum Wins Another Award Thanks to Friends... Recently, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art was presented with a beautification award by the City of Shawnee. This is just one of many examples of fine work done by the Friends of the MGMoA. The museum’s courtyard is an all volunteer effort. Walking up to the garden in front of the museum and then into the courtyard is as surprising as walking into the museum gallery. Visitors return to the museum to see what is new both inside and out. Christmas on the Plains Derald Swineford started a Christmas tradition in 1940. Rather than sending traditional Christmas cards, the Oklahoma artist used his printmaking skills to create Christmas prints to give to his friends. He concluded this series in 1983. In this special exhibition, Derald Swineford: Christmas on the Plains, the whole collection of prints will be displayed together for the first time. The exhibit will also feature paintings and variations of the prints he sent during the holiday seasons. He was born in Enid, Oklahoma in 1908. As an undergraduate at the University of Oklahoma, he studied painting and sculpting. He returned to OU to receive a Masters degree in fine arts. Swineford’s career moved him to schools across the region. He managed the art school at the Oklahoma Art Center in Oklahoma City. He worked in the art department at Wichita University in Wichita, Kansas and was an art supervisor at West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas. From 1946 until 1975, Swineford led the art program at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Education Association named him teacher of the year in 1970. After his first two years of sending Christmas prints, Swineford paused the series due to his service in the United States Air Force during World War II. It was Christmas 1946 when he resumed the tradition, and it continued uninterrupted until 1983. The subject of the images varies from year to year. Swineford was fond of printing rodeo scenes, images of Christmas on the frontier, and traditional scenes from the Nativity presented in a Plains Indian setting. 5th Annual Regional is Going Green! As you support the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, you help us help others—even our planet! For the 2013 annual art exhibit, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is partnering with Sustainable Shawnee, drawing attention to the importance of recycling. The title and theme for this year’s regional is Don’t Waste: Create! The exhibit features artworks which address the theme of recycling, either through subject or through medium. The exhibit is November 9-24, 2013. Artists are invited to participate by submitting an artwork (or two) that references recycling or sustainable living or is simply made of recycled materials. The artwork can be 2-D or 3-D and the choice of media is up to you (traditional media or old magazines, flyers, cans, computer parts, and general “junk”—as long as it is repurposed, remade, or re-imagined). Traditional or creative, professional or hobbyist, adult or student, this exhibition is open to all Oklahoma artists who keep our planet at heart, so please spread the word! There are no age requirements, and student/youth work is encouraged. Group registration is available for schools and classes. Registration for participation is due as soon as possible (no specific info about the artwork is required). Artworks must be delivered October 31-November 3. Visit www.mgmoa.org/regional or call 405-878-5605 for more information or to register. All visitors to Don’t Waste: Create! are also invited to help encourage recycling by bringing a paper product to recycle: newspaper, magazine, or phone book. All who bring a paper product to recycle will receive FREE admission to the exhibit and the museum’s permanent collections during the run of the exhibit. Sustainable Shawnee will recycle the paper following the exhibition. Sustainable Shawnee is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable living and educating the community on how to live more “gently” on our planet. To learn more about Sustainable Shawnee, visit www.sustainableshawnee.org or www.facebook.com/sustainableshawnee. Lynn Pollei’s papier mache dog is great example of recycled art. 1900 W. Iris attends After-School Art classes, Creative Arts Camps, and the summer Teen Art Clinic. Iris is 12 years old and has attended classes at the MGMoA for four years. “I wish I could explain how important these art classes are to Iris,” said her grandmother Sharon Harjo. “They have helped her so much and she really looks forward to it.” Iris has been drawing since she was “old enough to hold a pencil.” According to her grandmother, Iris’s drawing first caught her eye when the child was 2 years old. “She drew a giraffe,” said Sharon, “and I really thought someone else had drawn it. I couldn’t believe she had done it!” Iris Harjo, modeling the crown and scepter she created in summer art camp. Sharon believes that the MGMoA art classes have increased Iris’s confidence by helping her make new friends, “broadening her knowledge of people and cultures,” and by helping her realize that art is a big part of “who she is.” Iris Harjo, explaining block printing to her grandmother, Sharon Harjo According to Sharon, Iris can spend hours in her room working on art projects, sometimes spending all day focusing on her artwork. “Whenever she feels stressed from school, she can come home and just lose herself in art activities,” claimed Sharon. “You can actually see the transformation.” Iris attends MGMoA art classes on a partial scholarship. Sharon is raising her granddaughter alone and she is on a fixed income. Your support helps Iris continue to grow through her experiences in art classes and camps at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art. Gala Theme Revealed! Wish List The Museum always has special needs! You or someone you know might like to help provide one of the following items: Acid-free boxes $3 each (on average) To appropriately, safely and efficiently house the small pieces from the recent ivory gift, we need approximately 100 small boxes. This is the first step to preserve this new collection. Flatform wheeled cart $80 To be used for outreach education programming to haul art supplies, study collection artifacts, and equipment. Aluminum Easels $30 each To be used for After-School Art, Summer Camps, Workshops, Clinics, and Arts Trek. We ultimately need about 15 easels. Any amount you could give would help! New or Used Sewing Machine $150 Some items in collections, such as Native American woven rugs, need custom storage bags. The ability to make these bags in-house will ensure the correct conservation materials are used, and reduce expenses for conservation products. Thank You To Yvonne Hinchee for donating 30 aprons and to Ruth Horn for donating a document camera and plastic table! In a land…not so far away…imagination reigns, art is king, and creative dreams do come true! Friday, December 6, you can join over 170 guests at Shawnee’s most anticipated social event of the year. You will be fed savory fare, drink divine wines and enjoy music in a dreamy, whimsical Russian fairytale land. The gala’s live and silent auctions raise funds for the museum’s acclaimed educational programs. One auction item, Fund-a-Program, gives attendees the opportunity to invest in the scholarship fund, which provides busing grants and scholarships for field trips, after-school art, and summer camps. Each year, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art impacts more than 10,000 students, greatly due to generous donors like you who donate to the scholarship program! Contemporary Gallery Gets an Update Recently, some changes were made in the Contemporary Gallery. You will notice several new donations from Michi Susan, as well as artworks that have not been on exhibit for a while. The goal is to keep changing the exhibit spaces, rotating pieces whether by a recent donation or by choosing a piece that has not been on display for a long time. This way everyone can see something new when they visit. So keep visiting and checking out our galleries for new pieces! Photo: “Good Morning Everybody! Sun’s Up and It’s Time for Toast & Coffee!” Kim Camp, donated by Michi Susan. 1900 W. MacArthur, Shawnee, OK 74804 (405)878-5300 www.mgmoa.org A New Generation of Museum Supporters A new affinity group designed to welcome a new generation of museum supporters is beginning to take shape at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art. This group is developing with an experimental mindset under the name “Young at HeART.” Currently, Young at HeART is working as a collaborative group without officers. Decisions are made by a committee of the members. Who is on this committee? Any member who chooses to participate! In the first two meetings, the committee evaluated how this group could meet the cultural, social and entertainment desires of young adults. The group agreed to meet monthly with a planning session followed by a social mixer. During the planning session, the group organizes special museum events for members and non-members of this affinity group. “We have incredible relationships that go back thirty years with our Friends of the MGMoA (formerly known as MGMoA Volunteer Society). We’re hoping to grow friendships just as strong with these younger adults.” Director Dane Pollei said. Anyone interested in joining this group must have a museum membership at any level, and pay an additional $15 annual due for the “Young at HeART” group. For more information, please contact Tonya Ricks at (405) 878-5604. MacArthur Street banners donated by The Cleo L. Craig Foundation Leave a Legacy at the MUSEUM Have you considered making a planned gift to the MabeeGerrer Museum of Art? It’s an easy and effective way to make a lasting impact on the community through the Museum. Options include bequest, charitable trusts and gift annuities. For example, the Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Wissinger Memorial provides funding for exhibitions and collections. Over time it has grown, ensuring that the Wissinger’s gift will forever help the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art fulfill its mission, “Art is for Everyone.” To discuss ways that you might help now or in the future, please call Dane or Tonya at the Museum at (405) 878-5300. 1900 W.
