Shaking up the Senate - Melbourne Press Club
Shaking up the Senate Lunch with Derryn Hinch @MelbPressClub /MelbournePressClub The Turnbull Government has scraped back to power but faces huge challenges to its legislative program in the Senate, where minor parties and independents will hold the balance of power and call the shots. Among the new senators from Victoria will be the oldest person ever elected to the chamber – 72-year-old Derryn Hinch. The self-styled “Human Headline” is now recasting himself as “Senator Headline”. After a lifetime as a tough broadcaster and tenacious social activist, Hinch is going to Canberra with a firm agenda. His Justice Party wants tougher criminal sentencing, bail and parole reform, more resources to combat domestic violence, a public register of convicted sex offenders and voluntary euthanasia. In partnership with the Public Relations Insititute of Australia, the Melbourne Press Club is pleased to host a special media lunch with Senator-elect Hinch – just before he heads off to join the new Parliament. The event will include a Q&A panel with Club president and ABC Breakfast presenter Michael Rowland.
