Innovative Intel® Atom™ processor technology
Integration of the new Intel® Atom™
processor generation offers a previously unheard of combination of low
power loss and high performance at a
particularly economical price.
Fan-free operation - A plus for many
applications
The Automation PC 620 and Panel
PC 700, which have been proven in
thousands of applications, and the
Intel® Atom™ processor represent
an unbeatable combination. Here in
the first construction step, the housing construction of the APC620 and
PPC700, which is optimized for fanfree operation, shows its full strength
because the components that have to
be cooled the most, such as processor
and chipset, are mounted directly on
the large heat sink. The Intel® Atom™
N270 processor with 1.6 GHz clock
frequency offers a significantly higher
performance than the Pentium® M 1.1
GHz. However, the power consumption of the Atom™ processor is less
than that of a Celeron® M 600 processor. The user profits from the low current requirements and extended temperature range in fan-free operation
compared to Pentium® M processors
with the same performance.
The new Atom™ generation can be
equipped with up to 2 GB of fast DDR2
SDRAM, twice as much as before on
the APC620 and Panel PC 700.

Technical data
Intel® Atom™
The Intel® Atom™ processors are
based on an entirely new microarchitecture that is optimized for small size
and minimum power consumption
while providing good performance.
The N270 processor (code name Diamondville) used in the APC620 and
PPC700 has a TDP value (Thermal
Design Power - the maximum power
consumption of a processor) of only
2.5 W at a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz,
which is less than a Celeron® M running at 600 MHz. In spite of this fact,
its performance is significantly higher
than a Pentium® M 1.1 GHz. The N270
is manufactured using advanced 45
nm technology. The target markets
are Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs),
Ultra Mobile PCs (Netbooks) and embedded applications in industrial environments.

Modular design
With the switching cabinet PCs and
the Panel PCs, there is a wide range
of well-established products available
for the Atom™ platform. Thanks to
the modular design, there are devices
available from 10.4" VGA to 19" SXGA
or from the particularly flat design to 2
PCI slots. Even existing custom Panel
PC 700 devices can be used without
problems.
The APC620 is available in three housing designs with one, two, or five PCI
slots. The especially small APC620
embedded also has integrated fieldbus interfaces such as POWERLINK
and CAN. The APC620 does not have
any internal cable connections, which
makes it possible to achieve maximum
vibration resistance and operational
safety. Equipped with a CompactFlash
slot, it is extremely robust and has no
rotating parts. The APC620 is therefore
predestined for use in harsh industrial
environments.
Open platform:
Many so-called industrial PCs only
use standard boards designed for
standard operating systems, but the
Automation PCs from B&R cover
open Windows® systems and also
embedded runtime systems.
Numerous drive options
If necessary, a second CompactFlash
card can also be used. If the maximum
16 GB card is not sufficient, hard disks
suitable for industrial environments
can also be used. Only hard disks that
pass B&R's strict continuous operation
test criteria are used.
Additionally, the PC design permits
combined use of a CompactFlash card
and hard disk. In this way, the operating system can run write-protected
on the CompactFlash card so that
the system can boot properly after a
power failure. CompactFlash and hard
disks are easy to exchange without
opening the housing.
As seen by these examples, the
APC620 offers the user complete freedom when implementing a PC system. A high level of modularity and
scalability allow adjustments to be
made in order to ideally meet all application requirements in a cost-efficient
manner.
Integrated UPS
The optionally integrated UPS ensures that the PC system completes
all write operations even if a power
failure occurs. This means that all running programs will be ended properly
by the UPS software. This prevents
inconsistent data. The UPS charging
circuit takes up very little space in the
APC620/810. The batteries can be exchanged by the user.

Panel PC 700 Atom™
The Panel PC combines an industrial PC and display. This is the first choice where installation is required in cramped spaces.
Compact and powerful
Mechanical robustness was given
special attention during the construction of the Panel PC 700.
Panel PCs are available as touch devices with 10.4" VGA to 19" SXGA TFT
display. The housing is also a defining
factor: From very flat devices without
PCI slots to expandable devices with
two PCI slots, the Panel PC can be optimized to meet the requirements of
the application.
Modular
The Panel PC has an integrated CompactFlash slot, which can be expanded with a second CompactFlash slot
or a hard disk.
Fan-free
The Panel PC was specifically designed for operation without a fan. All
components that need to be cooled,
such as the processor and chipset, are
arranged so that heat is dissipated on
the large heat sink on the back of the
device.

The Intel® Atom™ N270 processor,
which offers top performance low

Panel PC 725 . Cooling is handled fanfree via the back of the housing.
Cabling made easy
Panel PCs with IP65 protection usually
implement all connections using expensive IP65 plugs, but the cabling for
the Panel PC 725 is done via the flange.
In this way, inexpensive standard cables can be used.
A fully-equipped PC that is also extremely thin
The Panel PC 725 offers extensive PC
resources in a very small space. With
two Ethernet interfaces, three USB 2.0
ports and a serial interface, communication is ensured both on the machine
level and also to the company network.

Panels with the performance of an industrial PC
The new Power Panel 500 series with
Intel® Atom™ architecture advances
into areas that were previously only
handled by industrial PCs. In Intel®
Atom™ Z510 processor used in the
Power Panel 500 has plenty of power, even for challenging applications.
There is also plenty of RAM - up to
2 GB. The extensive product range
includes panels from 5.7" VGA to
15" XGA with intuitive touch screen
and function keys. Gigabit Ethernet
ensures fast communication via the
plant network. Fieldbus interfaces or
another Gigabit Ethernet interface can
also be added as an option. When designing the Power Panel 500, a great
deal of attention was given to minimizing installation depth so that it can
also be used in tight spaces.

As central operating and control unit,
the B&R Power Panels combine control, visualization and drive technology in one package. From embedded
processors to full PC power, the product range always offers the optimal
system architecture and therefore

If expansions are required, remote I/O
and drives can be easily connected
using modular fieldbus interfaces.
Depending on the requirements, the
Power Panels can be expanded with
POWERLINK, CAN bus, Profibus DP or

Several distributed operating stations
are often used in order to guarantee

PP65 - Compact and powerful
The PP65 combines a compact design with increased computing power and represents a further addition to the successful Power Panel series.
Ideal for multi-axis applications
The PP65 is equipped with a powerful
Geode LX800 processor with 500 MHz
clock frequency. With this computing power, the PP65 provides performance that was previously achieved
by the PP400. Therefore, the PP65 is
especially suitable for multi-axis applications that require lots of computing
power but only have limited space in
the switching cabinet. The compact
dimensions of the PP45 were implemented.
Display and interface options provide
flexibility
The PP65 is available with 2 different
display types that have identical installation dimensions. A 5.7" model with
touch screen (without function keys)
and a 3.5" model with touch screen
and 30 function keys allow flexible
machine implementation.
The PP65 is equipped with 2 USB interfaces and a fast Ethernet port for
exchanging data with higher level systems. The PP65 is available with integrated X2X or POWERLINK interfaces
options for connecting remote I/O and
drives. The devices can be extended
with RS232/RS485, CAN and Profibus
DP slave interfaces depending on the
requirements.

RFID - Flexible and able to be fully integrated
RFID is often integrated in the automation world and offers the possibility to
link machine and system terminals in
the logistics, production tracing and
industrial IT structure. The B&R RFID
modules can be easily integrated in
existing structures without problems
using the USB interface. Today, most
BDE and access systems are based on
the 13.56 MHz RFID system. The new
development from B&R is ISO 14443
and ISO 15693 compatible and therefore allows easy user identification on
the operating unit. In this way, existing
identification cards can continue to be
used without problems. Recognition is
convenient because of the fast acquisition; it's normally enough to simply
hold the tag or user ID on or near the
device for identification. The range of
the read and write units is also limited
to a few centimeters in order to prevent
accidental identification when someone is simply walking by.
Through the compact design and prefabricated USB cable, IP65 protection is
provided from all sides. Because of this,
its possible that additional protective
covers are not needed, which greatly
simplifies subsequent installation.
Flexible installation:
The RFID units can be flexibly installed
and easily integrated in a switching
cabinet door or operating unit housing using a 22.5 mm standard cutout.
This type of installation ensures IP65
protection from the front as standard.
Installation in operating units:
RFID integration in a hygienic design
is possible because of the unique,
complete and seamless manner of integration in the operating unit. Up to
IP69K protection can be ensured for
the operating unit.

Hard as glass
The Automation Panel with glass touch
screen is especially well suited for
work with paints, adhesives, resins or
other such materials that can get on
touch screen surfaces. In the printing
industry for example, the touch screen
surface often gets ink on it from the users fingers. If this ink is not removed
immediately, it dries and the remaining
ink must be removed by mechanical
means. Here, a very hard and scratch
resistant surface is a great advantage
- ideally glass.
The 19" Automation Panel with glass
touch screen is equipped with a touch
sensor that works using surface wave
technology. Unlike other glass touch
systems, this surface wave technology
provides the advantage of also allowing operation with a gloved hand or a
touch screen pen.

On the front of this sheet of glass,
ultrasonic waves move between the
transmitters and receivers. When this
glass surface is touched, some of this
wave energy is absorbed and the

to calculate the touch coordinates.

is equipped with an insert slot on the
back. This insert slot accepts the modular display interface or the fan-free
Panel PC 300 insert.

When using operating units in the food
and beverage and pharmaceutical industries, there are special requirements regarding hygienic design and
continuous durability because they
must be cleaned often. Cleaning is
often done using high pressure cleaning equipment. In order to meet the

Addition to the product range
The perfect addition
Another series is being added to the
already extensive stepper motor product range. The new stepper motors
from the 80MPF series with a 60 mm
flange as well as the 56 mm 80MPD
series and the 86 mm 80MPH series
motors are among the strongest motors currently available on the market
with regard to holding torque. The
compact length provides additional
advantages during construction of the
machine. Just like all B&R motors, only
the highest quality materials are used
for the new stepper motors, which
guarantees a long lifespan.
Ball bearing structure
The ball bearing used in a stepper motor is generally one of the core components that determines reliability, even
under rough conditions. B&R was especially attentive when selecting these
components. Years of experience with
servo motors and feedback from many
customers were utilized here.
Flange is compatible to 56 mm motors
When designing the 80MPF series,
compatibility of the mounting flange
with the existing 56 mm motors was
taken into consideration. For this reason, the mounting holes for 60 mm
80MPF motors are identical to the
80MPD series, even though the flange
is 14 mm larger.
The shaft diameter for the new stepper motors is 8 mm (as compared to
80MPD  ¼“), which allows the maximum radial load on the shaft to be increased.
A performance increase of up to 30%
and at the same time reduced power
loss make the new stepper motors
from the 80MPF series the ideal products for use in machines with high
clock rates.

If servo motors must be installed

8LVA motor series form B&R is just
what you need. Equipped with either
a resolver or an absolute multiturn encoder with highly modern EnDat 2.2
interface, these motors are ready to

Through their low moment of inertia, these motors are designed to be

In order to save weight, installation
space and the amount of mass moved,
the gear is mounted directly on the
motor. The drive gear is mounted directly on the motor shaft and the motor flange is precisely adapted to the

B&R already offers a wide range of

Characteristics
With the 8AC125.60-1, encoders can
be read based on the BiSS C standard. The input signals are monitored. In this way, broken connections, shorted lines and encoder

The BiSS interface is an open and license-free communication standard.

Do you know exactly how much energy your machine consumes?
Intelligent energy management and
the resulting potential for energy savings are among the the key issues of
our time.
That's why, in addition to the initial
costs, life cycle costs continue to gain
importance.
These life cycle costs, which are often
the focus of conversation, do indeed
continue to grow in importance, but
are presently difficult to represent in
comparable numbers. What is at least
easy to measure and, therefore to optimize, is the energy consumption of a
production system, even if this information has only been seldom used.
The integrated power meter function
in the ACOPOSmulti power supply
modules makes it possible to record
the individual energy costs of a production machine without the need for
additional utilities.

power supply module with integrated
braking energy recovery or a passive
power supply module (braking energy
is converted to heat).

operator information about how much
power is being consumed by the ma-

Auto-tuning - hanging axes
Function
The expansion to include hanging
axes has considerably widened the
area of use of the existing autotuning
function. Hanging axes are involved
when conservative forces cause a
constant load torque on the motor via
a mechanical entity. The main attribute of a hanging axis is the need for
a brake. If this brake is released, then
the load torque causes the drive to accelerate and the load to sink.
Intelligent stabilization of the autotuning function prevents exactly this
behavior from occurring. Control
strategies hold the drive within the
given range of movement, close to
the working point. The existing autotuning function is then able to identify
the system and to calculate the ideal
control parameters. The major advantage for the user is that the intelligent
stabilization requires essentially no
knowledge of the system.
Usage
Due to the fact that the existing autotuning function is part of the autotuning function for hanging axes, the
previous area of use is considerably
expanded. Wherever loads are raised
or lowered, the control parameters
can now also be determined automatically.

ISQ ripple compensation
Inadequacies in the mechanical structure and electrical asymmetry can
cause undesired disturbance torque in
the power transmission system. Unfortunately, the majority of these disturbances are strongly dependent on the
load, and change with the operating
point of a permanent magnet synchronous motor.
This type of disturbance torque has a
negative effect on the application, especially for direct drives, and results
in additional position lag error. This
generally has a negative effect on the
concentricity properties of the drive
system.
Compensation for disturbance torque
The clear correlation between the encoder position and the disturbance that
occurs allows us to identify the motorspecific disturbance torque values and
then implement compensation in relation to the operating-point.
During the identification process, the
disturbance torque is recorded over
at least one mechanical rotation. This
process is fully automatic and can be
performed with all standard encoders.
Based on this signal curve, intelligent
algorithms then generate data record
specially for this motor.
This individual data record is immediately available for the compensation, which means that it can be used
instantly. Of course data records that
were identified earlier, and possibly
adjusted individually, can also be used.
A signal for compensation is generated based on this data record, which
was either determined directly by the
identification procedure or was loaded
by a previous identification. This signal is applied to the control loop using proven structures (set current filter
ISQ_Filter), thereby compensating for
the undesired disturbance torque. This
compensation makes it possible to
considerably reduce the position lag
error, which results in an enormous
improvement to the concentricity of
the motor.

Parameter identification
With a wide range of setup function
blocks, it is possible to shorten a
drive's commissioning phase by automatically calling these FBs from a
program.
The use of these FBs can minimize the
number of manual configuration steps
after replacing hardware components
or when dealing with constantly
changing load conditions.
■■ MC_BR_SetupInductionMotor
The function block MC_BR_SetupInductionMotor
automatically
identifies parameters from an induction motor. Only the motor's
type plate data must be provided
for proper detection. The remaining parameters required by the
drive are either calculated or determined via measurement, depending on the function block configuration.
The resulting data is saved in an
ACOPOS parameter table on the
controller.
■■ MC_BR_SetupController
The function block MC_BR_SetupController makes it possible to
automatically determine the parameters of the speed and position
controller for a drive. These parameters are detected while the axis is
practically at a stand-still.
Furthermore, feed forward parameters can be determined for the
compensation of friction effects
and inertia using a movement defined by the user.
The resulting data is saved in an
INIT parameter data module on the
controller.
Power measurement
■■ MC_BR_PowerMeter
The function block MC_BR_PowerMeter is used for easy operation of
the ACOPOSmulti's power and energy measurement function.
The values can be determined
within a specified monitoring interval (e.g. product cycle). The beginning of the monitoring interval can
be defined either by setting an FB
input or by an event at the ACOPOSmulti.
The function block makes the the
determined data available on an
output, enabling it to be immediately further processed in the application.

Starting new movement types
■■ MC_BR_MoveCyclicPosition
Some applications require the set
position of a drive on the controller to be calculated and/or transformed- depending on the mechanics being used.
The function block MC_BR_MoveCyclicPosition is used to transfer
this position cyclically to the drive.
It is also possible to change between cyclic set position and basis
movement function blocks, which
start drive-controlled movements,
on the fly.
The axis is in the PLCopen axis
state "Continuous Motion" while it
is controlled by this function block.
■■ MC_TorqueControl
This function block specified in the
PLCopen standard starts a movement with a predefined torque or,
on linear axes, with a predefined
force.
The set value is not activated immediately, but rather via a configurable ramp function. The torque
and force can also be limited using
speed, acceleration and deceleration limit values, which are available as FB inputs.
The FB is used in applications where
the torque or force are decisive factors for an optimum process.

Highly dynamic positioning tasks require not only the position value, but
also the exact time at which the position was determined. The X20 HIPERFACE module has a NetTime function
for this, which adds a time stamp to
the recorded position with microsecond accuracy. The module provides

with EnDat 2.1 as well as with EnDat

Pure daisy-chain wiring of the fieldbus is often very difficult, if possible
at all. In practice, tree structures are
often required for real-time Ethernet
systems. The use of a standard switch
would introduce unwanted delay and
jitter times for EtherCAT. This is why
special EtherCAT switches are used.

An EtherCAT switch with four ports
and 24 VDC supply is available as
stand-alone device. This makes it
possible to build very basic tree topologies. However, an expandable
EtherCAT bus controller, which can

Modbus on Ethernet
In recent years, Modbus has started to
use Ethernet as the basis for communication. Devices with Modbus/TCP are
becoming more and more common
in the areas of automation that do not
demand true real-time. The reason for
this can be found in the widely used
and easily maintained Modbus protocol, which can be easily installed and
run on any PC. The area of use ranges
from machine manufacturing without
special real-time demands to building
automation.
Bus controller with TCP and UDP
Just like the corresponding X20 module, the X67 bus controller also supports Modbus/TCP as well as Modbus/
UDP. Thanks to the highly efficient
Modbus implementation, it is possible
to attain reaction times down to a millisecond. This makes it easy to expand
the bus controllers with the entire X67
and X20 system using the integrated
expansion interface.
Two bus controller designs are available: With eight integrated digital
channels and with 16 I/O connections.
The latter of the two has an integrated

Integrated I/O supply
CANopen offers the possibility of incorporating the I/O supply in the CAN
cable. The advantage is obvious:

Local expansion of an X67 or X20 system is easy to do. Only the new modules at the end have to be arranged.
Addresses are assigned automatically
in ascending order. This automatic
function has several advantages. However, there are also situations when

The E-stop relay for safely cutting off
the 24 V supply is a classic element
in any switching cabinet. However, integrated safety technology has now
completely changed this image. The
safe output modules have the disadvantage that each output that must be
safely shut off, must be designed as a
safety output. And this even though
cable diagnostics, muting lamp monitoring or the dedicated cut-off of a
single channel are often not necessary.
On the one hand, this means increased
module costs, and on the other hand,
work needed for making adjustments in
the switching cabinet and in the entire
chain of documentation.
The new X20 supply module with safe
cut-off replaces the previous standard
supply module and the external safety
relay. The supplied 24 V for a potential
group can be safely cut-off. As a result,

Code comparison
The functions already implemented in
the SafeDESIGNER for comparing two
projects and for finding differences in
projects will be expanded to include
a code comparison. This is done by
comparing the codes of the program
organizational units (POU) contained
in the project with each other and then
displaying any differences found in
the code. This makes it considerably
easier for the user to manage several
different projects. This function also
significantly improves the process of
searching for errors.
LONG data types
In most cases, 16-bit integer values
are sufficient for processing analog
data. However, 32-bit is a must for
operations with position values from
the safe drive technology. This is why
the mathematic and logical functions
in the SafeDESIGNER are being expanded to include the data type LONG

Additional advantages of integrated
safety technology - Error detection
time
External monitoring modules are no
longer needed when using the integrated safety functions. This means
significantly faster reaction times and
error detection.
The resulting advantage is best illustrated with the following example:
A maximum speed of 10 mm/s is defined for a machine's setup mode for
the safety technology. The safety function SLS is requested to activate the
setup mode.
The SafeMC module monitors the delay and the configured speed limit. The
functional application is responsible
for running at the requested speed and
not exceeding the monitored limit.
The functional application drives and
the safety technology monitors!
An error on the functional controller results in an incorrect set value specification, which then causes the monitored
speed limit to be exceeded.
The error detection time the time from
when the monitored limit is exceeded
to when the respective error reaction
is activated.
During the error detection and reaction time, the drive can accelerate at
the maximum possible physical acceleration rate!
This must be accounted for in the configuration of the monitored limit.
That means:
A shorter total error detection and reaction time means that the axis will
start running with the active safety
function sooner!

From a mechanical line shaft to an
electronic shaft
The last few years have seen printing
machines move from mechanical line
shafts to modern electronic shafts.
The steadily growing demands for
precision, productivity and flexibility
made it necessary to rethink drive solutions for printing machines. In the
end, it resulted in the use of a separate
high-precision synchronized drive on
each printing unit.
On the one hand, the resolution of the
fixed mechanical coupling simplified
the construction and therefore prevented mechanical problems. On the
other hand, however, it increased the
demands on register control, since the
longitudinal register error needed to
be corrected indirectly via the drives
of the printing cylinder.
Register control
A gravure printing press is a coupled
multivariable system, i.e. a phase correction on one drive affects all subsequent register errors and therefore the
respective control loops. Furthermore,
the behavior of the register is non-lin-
ear. This means that the response of
controlled system a phase correction
will vary depending on the line speed
and acceleration. Rather than being
measured continuously, the register
error is only sampled at each full revolution of the printing cylinder, which
provides an additional challenge.
From a heterogeneous system configuration to an integrated solution
The conventional machine automation solution has a heterogeneous
system architecture. Separate units
(e.g. for register control, motion control, general machine control) from
various manufacturers are connected
via simple interfaces. This low level of
integration has numerous disadvantages, such as:

Register control
B&R's register control is based on
physical models, and is designed
specifically for the non-linear system structure. This makes it possible
to maintain excellent control results
even during acceleration and deceleration of the linear velocity. The main
focus in the design of the function
blocks was on making them simple
for the user to work with. Clearly arranged interfaces and select geometric machine data make this possible.
The software function blocks for register control provide following functions:

Servo pump control
Electro-hydraulic hybrid drive technology
The classic drive solution for many
hydraulic machines in a p/Q control
pump driven by an induction motor.
The movement is controlled by mechanically adjusting the flow rate of
the pump with the induction motor at
a constant rated speed.
The main disadvantages of this standard construction are:
■■ Poor energy efficiency

■■ Pump lifespan
■■ High-maintenance hydraulics tank

Using a variable speed drive together
with a constant current pump results
in an electro-hydraulic hybrid drive.
This combines the advantages of both
drive technologies:
Electric power supplied by an electric
servo drive and motor provides high
dynamics and precision, low noise
and stable temperatures. The only
purpose of the hydraulics is power
transmission. Particularly in this area
is where the advantages of a hydraulic drive really shine, such as compact
size, high force and power density,
and the availability of robust, cost efficient linear motors.
Highly efficient energy management
The variable speed of a servo pump
drive prevents the idle speed losses
that typically occur in hydraulic con-
sumers between process cycles. The
pump can turn at low speed to compensate for the leakage.
The high volumetric efficiency of the
internal gear pumps, which are used
primarily for servo pump drives, gives
them an additional advantage over the
piston pumps in conventional configurations.
This makes it possible to perform the
same amount of mechanical work
while achieving energy savings of up
to 70%. For a machine manufacturer
this is money in the bank.
In a total solution, the cost of the additional servo drive is compensated
by significant savings in the hydraulics (smaller tank, no oil cooler, pump
costs).
Quiet operation
The variable speed servo drive always
operates the pump at the minimum
speed required. Compared to a conventional configuration, noise levels
can be reduced by up to 70 dB between cycles. You can only hear the
hydraulics when they are actually
working. With the already reduced
noise generation due to the lower flow
rate pulsation created by internal gear
pumps compared to piston pumps, a
typical noise reduction of 5 - 10 dB can
be achieved during movements.

pump controller is that it alternates between print and flow quantity control
(p/Q functionality). The control core
is implemented directly on the servo
drive.
The result is high-precision control with

The high bandwidth of the ACOPOS
servo drives allows them to use highly
dynamic speed adjustments to further
reduce the already low flow rate pulsation of internal gear pumps.
Controller parameter sets for the various consumer axes are stored directly
on the servo drive and can be quickly
switched during runtime.
In multiple-pump system, the drive assemblies can operate independently to
supply different consumers simultaneously, or they can be coupled together
in master/slave operation to provide
one consumer with maximum axis
speed.
The software handles important factors

and in the pressure line during reverse

X67CM4033 hydraulics module
The X67CM4033 has one position encoder input, one analog output and
two analog inputs. In other words, it
provides the entire I/O framework for
a fully equipped valve-controlled hydraulic axis.

GMC - The trend in automation
GMC - Two worlds meet
Some time has passed since the introduction of Generic Motion Control
(GMC). With its diverse range of applications, this unique concept has
formed the foundation for a large variety of machines.
GMC combines the worlds of robotics, CNC, linked axis movements
and single axis positioning in one
homogenous system. Knowledge of
complex path designs for robots is
applied to tool and production machines. The control of articulated arm
robots is also possible, as is complex
CNC processing in 3D.
The seamless integration of GMC

The standard CNC package includes
both the hardware components and
software functions needed to operate a typical CNC machine.
The hardware includes a 15" CNC
panel with integrated keys for machine operation and a keyboard, plus
a handheld device with a handwheel.
The software includes all the most
important basic functions for operation, configuration and diagnosis of
the entire system, and in particular all
the axes and CNC channels.
The visualization is based on Visual
Components, B&R's integrated realtime visualization system. Through
the visualization, the user can access
the system functions of the software,
and the interface is designed so that
the visualization itself can be complemented with or even totally replaced
by customer-specific functions.
The preprogrammed visualization
components include both "classic"

The function modules in the standard
CNC package are designed to provide
all the basic functions for CNC processing machines. The corresponding visualization was implemented with Visual
Components.
Main
The main page is divided into six sections, and the user can configure the
content of these sections during runtime. They can be used to display axis
positions, channel and program data,
and more.
A mode selection switch allows the
user to select from seven different operating modes for the machine.
■■ Automatic: A program can be run
on the active channels.
■■ MDI: The selected channels can
be operated by programming NC
blocks in the MDI window.
■■ Jog: Manual mode for operating
the axes with the handwheel.
■■ Single-step: When a program is run
in single-step mode, it stops after

allows statements to be made concerning the behavior of the solution

Rapid prototyping
The open and closed loop control
algorithms tested in simulation are
transferred to the controller at the

plants in wind farms and the often difficult access of the switching cabinet

Energy measurement, comprehensive and transparent
With the integrated X20CM0985 energy measurement module, high
current and voltage values can be
measured and made available in the
control system. Additional devices,
which require a lot of work to be integrated in the automation system, are

SDM – Motion Diagnostic
In the next expansion level of the
web-based System Diagnostics
Manager, extensive and practical
diagnostics functions for the drive
technology will be available.
Overview of axes
In order to get a quick overview of
the axes used in the machine, the
SDM groups multiple axes into a
table. The user decides which axes
should be displayed and compared.
The clearly arranged display provides information such as referencing, enabled controllers, current
speed and current position. Additionally, the table shows the status
of an axis' onboard inputs, and information about pending messages.
In order to make the table a fast and
powerful visualization, graphic symbols are used instead of text wherever possible.
Trace
With highly dynamic processes,
a graphic record of signals on the
drive is often the only way to understand and test the processes.
The operation of the trace is specially optimized to make is easy to use.
It is therefore not necessary for the
operator on site to access the trace
configuration. The user loads a configuration prepared in Automation
Studio to the controller using the
SDM and then begins the trace. It is
also possible to trace multiple axes,
and a common trigger event can be
configured. The SDM groups completed traces in a list. The upload
function allows the user to load the
data to the PC for further use, or to
analyze it directly on site using Automation Studio.
Network command trace
The network command trace records
all commands to and from the drive
in a ring buffer. It also logs the application's PLCopen calls, providing
a seamless record of the command
sequence from the application to the
drive. The user can save this command sequence and perform a de-
tailed analysis on the PC using Automation Studio. Thanks to time stamps,
the behavior of the machine can even
be reconstructed offline.

SDM – I/O Viewer
The System Diagnostics Manager will
be be expanded in the area of I/O diagnostics. In this way, an I/O Viewer
will be available in the future that
shows diagnostics data points (serial
number, etc.) and also the status of
the individual I/O channels.

The B&R PLC system offers a large
number of diagnostics data points,
which provide information about the
status of individual I/O modules and
about the current network status of
the I/O bus systems (X2X, POWERLINK, etc.). These data points will later
be clearly visualized in the SDM.

testing, the status of individual I/O
channels can be viewed in the System
Diagnostics Manager.

Since the late 90's it has been possible to use the ANSI C programming
language in B&R Automation Studio.
Functionality that is seamlessly integrated in the project management
process allows ANSI C programs to
be developed and run as Automation Runtime tasks, in the same way
as IEC programs.

package, B&R Automation Studio
3.0 now also allows developers to
