Dear Members of the Potter Family,
Who knew … that an animal shelter could be an exciting, joyful and vibrant place?
Who knew … that a little common sense in housing and care could create a new
paradigm of humane sheltering? Who knew … that a little bit of determination
and hard work could wreak miracles?
Each of the animals that come through our doors has a story to tell – often
with many chapters. The pictures you see in this report to the community
capture just a few of our stories from the past year and showcase how the
Potter League enriches lives. The pictures we love best are the ones that
show cherished pets and the people who opened their hearts and homes
to them.
Animals have keener senses than human beings. They see better, smell better, and
they have an uncanny ability to anticipate things. Maybe they knew. Maybe the
animals sensed that after all the effort, the Potter League would emerge an even
better place than any homeless animal could ever hope for. Maybe they silently
urged us on. What else could have so inspired us all with one single-minded goal … to do the best
for the animals, no matter the obstacles?
I am happy on behalf of our animals and the community that uses this remarkable resource that it
all turned out so well. Thank you for your support, your inspiration, your confidence … together,
we have ensured a generation’s worth of happy endings to come. I leave the board content.
As we have literally opened new doors and completed a state-of-the-art
facility, our story is now about focusing on the programs that support our
mission. In FY 2010 the Potter League concentrated on saving lives, strengthening relationships,
and establishing contacts that better serve our community’s companion animals and people.
While the stories and faces capture the spirit of our work, what completes every story for these
animals is you – your generosity and your commitment to the work we do. We rely on you for
the resources needed to help us help them. Thank you for your confidence in our mission and
for celebrating with us the joys animals bring to our lives.

Through our transport program,
22 more dogs and puppies are
transferred to the Potter League
from an overcrowded shelter in
North Carolina. Twenty-two
families eagerly awaited their
arrival and all the dogs were
quickly placed in their new homes.
February
The Have A Heart Cocktail Party
and Silent Auction attracts 500
people and raises $74,000 for the
animals. Happy Tails “Stay-Cation
Camp” went wild with a three-day
education adventure attended by
17 children.
March
Due to extreme floods that hit
our state, four dogs are transferred
from the heavily damaged Warwick
Animal Shelter to the Potter
League and placed for adoption.
April
After an area home is declared
uninhabitable, the Potter League
receives 48 cats, one turtle, one
snake and a dog from the household within a 24-hour period.
The staff triages the animals in
our wellness wing, treats the
cats for medical conditions, and
makes plans for their long term
care and eventual placement.
May
In honor of Be Kind to Animals
Week, the Potter League hosts
a poster contest for children in
grades K-8. The two themes were:
“Who Let the Cats Out?” and
“Wild and Free.” Of 78 posters
submitted, the top entries are
honored at an awards ceremony.
June
More than 500 paws hit Glen
Park in Portsmouth on June 6
as the Heart & Sole Walk for
the Animals raises $78,000.
The enrollment for Happy Tails
Day Camp grows to 90 children
wanting a summer of fun at
the Potter League.

Tea for Tails honors Mrs. Oatsie

Our progressive adoption program places stray, abandoned
and relinquished companion animals with loving guardians.
Anyone interested in adoption can visit our shelter or our
website www.PotterLeague.org to see photos and descriptions which are updated daily. At the Potter League we are
committed to finding homes for every adoptable animal
entrusted to us. In FY 2010, 1,254 animals were placed
with new families.
Spay/Neuter
Intake and Surrender Services
In 2010, we received 2,021 animals, an increase of 2.9% over
our previous year. Of this number, 945 were surrendered to the
Potter League by owners who could no longer care for them.
The average stay for an animal was 9 days for dogs and 24
days for cats, including time for medical exams, treatments
and spay/neuter surgeries.
Lost and Found
We took in 658 stray animals of which 480 were reunited with
their families. The staff distributed 1,323 free identification
tags to the public to keep their pets safe. A listing with
photographs of all stray animals in the building is posted
on the Potter League website.
Medical treatments
The animal care staff and our volunteer veterinarians gave
4,399 medical exams and administered vaccinations and preventative treatments to prepare animals for adoption. Financial
assistance was provided to 53 families to care for their animals.
Foster families make it possible to help unweaned and fragile
animals by providing the personalized care they need to
grow into healthy, socialized, adoptable puppies and kittens.
Thanks to a team of over 20 dedicated foster families, 171
animals received this specialized pre-adoption care and
are now enjoying their new homes.
Transports
Animal shelters in North
Carolina, Pennsylvania, and
neighboring states rely on us
to accept animals from their
overcrowded facilities. Without
our transport program, many of
these animals would have faced
euthanasia. Last year, the lives
of 269 animals were saved when
the Potter League gave them a
second chance for a home they
so deserve.

All animals at our facility are behaviorally and medically
evaluated before entering the adoption process. These
evaluations help staff to learn more about the dog or cat
and match the animal with the most appropriate new home.

All dogs, cats and rabbits are spayed or neutered prior to
adoption. Through our local veterinary hospitals and the
new Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic, 649
spay/neuter surgeries were performed on shelter animals
to reduce unwanted litters, pet overpopulation and
euthanasia in the future.

On any given day, the Potter League staff and volunteers care for
as many as 150 homeless dogs, cats, rabbits and small animals.
Thanks to your generous support we are able to provide a comfy
room, a warm bed, nutritious food, veterinary care, training, and
lots of love and attention to prepare these animals for new
homes. Together, we are saving more and more animals’ lives
while enriching the lives of people who love them.

The Potter League is an open admission
shelter that has adopted national standards
called Asilomar Accords. By utilizing a
standard language and reporting method for our statistics, the Potter League can
easily and clearly track progress to end euthanasia both at our shelter and across
shelters nationwide. The Live Release Rate reveals the percentage of animals
that leave the shelter alive regardless of their health or behavior status. This
measurement eliminates any subjective definition of the word "adoptable."
Based on this method, the Potter League's Live Release Rate is 91.5%, among
the highest in the nation. For the FY 2010, no adoptable animals were euthanized
at the Potter League.
Thanks to your support, we are reaching our goal to save the lives of all healthy
and treatable companion animals. Together, we save animals, prevent cruelty
toward them and enrich the lives of people who love them.
Raising Awareness
To promote adoptions, more than 100 animals were featured
in The Newport Daily News Pet of the Week advertisements
with another 120 featured in 3 full-page ads. Ask Bootsie, our
weekly advice column, offered a wide range of animal topics.
Feature articles on the Potter League appeared in Natural Dog,
a national publication and in Rhode Island Monthly. Statewide
coverage on WPRI 12 FOX Providence included a segment
on The Rhode Show and more than 250 PSAs promoting our
two largest fundraisers of the year. Monthly radio interviews
were hosted by Art Beluti on WADK. Six Potter League
articles on animal care were published in The Women’s Journal.
Interested adopters used our website to view animals available
for adoption with a record 167,159 hits. We reached a
benchmark of 2,800 fans on our Facebook page. For the
9th time, the Potter League was voted most favorite
charity by the readers of Newport Life Magazine.
Pet Visitation Program
Through our Animal Assisted Activities Program, 335 visits
from volunteers and their pets brought joy to the physically
and mentally challenged, the elderly, and residents of long-term
care facilities and hospitals in our community.
Pet Loss Support
In acknowledgement of the integral role companion animals
play in our lives, the Potter League offered monthly support
sessions for those grieving the loss of a beloved pet.
Pet Safe
The Potter League provided temporary housing for 109 pets
of owners during challenging times. The program also
accommodated individuals needing to be briefly hospitalized
who had no one to care for their animals.
Off-Site Pet Adoptions
To reach out to people who may not visit the shelter, Newport
Animal Hospital, Newport Animal Clinic and Portsmouth
Veterinary Clinic hosted 20 Potter League cats for adoption.
All were placed in new homes! Every Saturday is adoption
day at Petco with weekly visits by Potter League volunteers
and adoptable pets.
With your generous gifts, we have built an organization where people
can not only adopt an animal but also receive ongoing support. The
Potter League is committed to helping people keep animals in their
homes, overcome challenges and strengthen the human-animal bond.
With our new behavior and training center, knowledgeable instructors
and progressive programming, we have seen a 45% increase
in training class attendance.
HeadStart
Staff and five HeadStart volunteers worked daily to
prepare rowdy, shy or fearful animals for adoption.
The HeadStart program offers a consistent training plan
for each individual dog that ensures additional support
and the best possibility for a successful adoption.
Dog Training
Our Training Center is a busy place. More than 1,000
puppies and small dogs were enrolled in puppy and
small breed play groups. Over 400 dogs participated in
specialty training classes such as multi-level obedience,
agility and Rally-O. Free weekly obedience classes were
offered to all of our adopters - 502 dogs and their owners
attended. Twelve dogs obtained their Canine Good
Citizen certification through the Potter League and were
then able to participate in our Animal Assisted Activities
with visits to nursing homes and hospitals.
Support
Behavior Director Byron Davies and our animal care staff answered
hundreds of calls and emails received on our Behavior Helpline
from pet owners who have both challenging and simple questions.
Education
Potter Pet University hosted nine workshops on topics such
asseparation anxiety, children and pets, grooming, training
initiatives, wildlife rehabilitation, bird, rabbit and cat care.
Feline Forum, a monthly discussion group, was formed to
provide the opportunity for cat lovers to discuss a variety
of topics pertaining to cat behavior and care.
Riley, a 4 month-old beagle mix, was transferred to the
Potter League from a shelter in North Carolina. He was
soon adopted by the Orton family and has been coming
to puppy classes every week. Riley excels in obedience
work and gets A+ grades from his trainer.
"He has made our lives more exciting, energetic
and fulfilling. Riley is a great companion to our
other dog Maggie and we love him!" Riley lives
happily every after with his family.

Hundreds of volunteers collectively gave 18,039 hours of
their time and talents to the Potter League to assist with
animal care and our daily operations. They cleaned and
socialized with the cats, walked and trained dogs, greeted
thousands of people, cared for the rabbits and small mammals, fostered animals, did laundry, assisted with humane
education, answered phones, entered data, mowed the
lawns, made trips to the local veterinary offices and assisted
with animal transports. Each and every volunteer plays a
vital role in our success as a stellar animal welfare
organization.

Throughout the year, more than
300 volunteers spent 2,143 hours lending a hand at our
special events, including the Have A Heart Cocktail Party,
Heart and Sole Walk for the Animals, Tea For Tails and
Critter Glitter Sequin Jewelry Sale. These events raised
over $275,000 for the animals.
The Potter League’s Mentoring Program provided learning
opportunities for students and young adults from area high
schools and local colleges, including Byrant College, URI,
Salve Regina University and Roger Williams University.

this past year as never before to help us expand our services
to people and pets of Newport County. More than 500 new
faces attended our monthly volunteer orientation – a new
record! In 2010, 648 volunteers contributed 30,497 hours to
care for the animals, raise funds, and assist with special
events and outreach, administrative tasks, and a myriad of
other activities. Our volunteers enrich the lives of animals
and people every day.

At our annual recognition dinner, Howie Naugle
was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. Barbara
Kirwin received the coveted Lori Owens Award.
Board Member of the Year was awarded to Helene
van Beuren and Capital Campaign Committee
Member of the Year was Jane Moore.

The Potter League would like to thank the following donors for their generous
contributions to our Annual Fund from 8/1/09 through 7/31/10. This list
does not include event tickets, purchase of goods and services, or capital
campaign gifts. Capital campaign gifts will be listed in a separate publication.
In 2010, nearly 2,500 students benefited from the
Potter League’s education and outreach programs.
$5,000 +
The Potter League’s Humane Education Department offers
a variety of programs for children and teens that are highly
interactive, student-centered and age appropriate. With
your generous donations, we have created nationally
recognized programs that teach students to understand
and respect animals, and to become better citizens in
their communities.
Our in-school programs focus on topics such as responsible
pet ownership, animal communication and safety, endangered species and wildlife. Last year, 1,292 students in
Newport County schools benefited from this program at
the 3rd, 5th and 7th grade levels. This year we expanded
our program to include two elementary schools in Tiverton.
Students also participated in a unique education series
about coyotes in our community.
Pre-school programs doubled by adding Wagging Tails
Story Hour. Four of these programs were in collaboration
with Newport County Community Mental Health.
The pre-school and kindergarten through 2nd grade
programs accommodated 561 eager students all wanting
to visit with and learn about animals.
The Reading Fur Fun literacy program continued to
grow with sessions at Newport County schools, the
Newport County YMCA, Child & Family group homes
and the Middletown Public Library. In the past year,
117 children improved their reading skills and built
confidence through these sessions.
In our second summer, Happy Tails Day Camp added
two additional sessions and 30 more campers! The six
week-long half-day sessions were full of excitement with
campers learning about animal welfare, interacting with
the shelter animals and staff, taking part in creative crafts
and learning about wildlife. This program helped 90
children better understand the importance of the special
bond between people and animals.
Potter League for Animals Participation Badges were earned
by 167 Girl Scouts who attended a new two-hour workshop.
During the workshop, Scouts learned how to care for pets
and discovered ways to help animals in their communities.
More than 400 youths and teens from local schools and youth
clubs toured our facility. Many came back to participate in
our Kid’s Club and to volunteer with their parents.

Capital Campaign
Race to the Finish!
Quiet dogs, healthy cats, happy people….that’s
what you will now find at the Potter League on
any given day. You might also find children
engaged in a Wagging Tail Story Hour in the
Alletta Morris Education Center while, simultaneously, a dozen small dogs romp in a play
group in our Behavior & Training Center.
In October 2009, we proudly announced the
awarding of our LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold certification
from the US Green Building Council. The
Potter League was the first animal shelter in
the country and the first building in Rhode
Island to attain this status.
Our new animal care and education center
has been operational for 20 months and
continues to have an extraordinary impact
on the services and programs we provide. Most
amazing is how the homeless animals now
transition to life at the Potter League. The
animals remain much healthier and their levels
of stress are dramatically reduced. New space
for vital programming allows us to substantially increase the number of service users
who frequent the facility.
As of the 2010 fiscal year end, $7,309,653 has
been raised for Honoring Their Trust. Due to the
economic climate, we extended our capital
campaign until December 31, 2010. Race to the
Finish is now in full gear to raise the remaining
funds to reach our goal of $7.8 million.
