W E D N ES DAY, J U LY 2 5 , 2 012 Hidden among the row homes, community gardens are an urban escape “We’re really privileged to use this space, and we recognize that, so we share the produce that we get,” she says. Baltimore Greenspace Over in Upper Fells Point, at the intersection of Wolf St. and Pratt St., another community garden, three house lots large, offers residents a chance to get into nature without leaving the city. “This is the only community green space in Upper Fells Point,” says Kurt Schiller, a self-employed carpenter who has been with the Upper Fells Point Community Garden since the beginning. “The community just took the initiative to clean it up and brought in some top soil,” says Schiller. There are now 13 garden plots and community green spaces in the front and rear of the garden, where the Upper Fells Point Improvement Association holds cookouts and other community events. In the Haunted Garden event around Halloween, Schiller has been known to spring out of a box and terrify local kids. Another community member then chases them around the garden with a gas-powered chainsaw (chain removed), ensuring that the kids won’t sleep for the next week. Schiller says that he and other community members vested in the gardens started making moves to secure the land in 2001. “We saw a slight uptick in home values,” says Schiller. “We were afraid that, with the craziness going on, the city would sell the lots for $100,000 each to somebody.” Eventually, Schiller became a founding member of Baltimore Greenspace, a nonprofit dedicated to owning community greenspace land, and, most importantly, assuming the liability incurred by ownership. BY ERIK ZYGMONT [email protected] “A lot of people have no idea what they’re doing, and a lot of people are experts,” says Heidi Vorrasi, describing the range of gardening aptitude among the South Baltimore residents who use the community garden at S. Charles St. and E. Heath St. In this and several other locations scattered throughout the city, corn, tomatos, peppers, eggplants and other produce grow in a vacant lot among the row homes, businesses, and traffic. At the Charles and Heath St. garden, peninsula residents can pay $30 to use a plot for one year. The land was formerly an “unofficial dog park,” according to Vorrasi. “I soon realized it was disgusting and that I would never take my dog in there,” she says. Despite the landmines, she saw potential. “I though that would be a good spot for a community garden,” says Vorrasi, who has enjoyed gardening for her entire life. There were some administrative hurdles. Vorrasi and other aspiring city gardeners collected 170 signatures requesting that permission be granted to garden on the land, which belonged (and belongs) to Baltimore DENNIS E. This one, administered by City Farms, is located at the corner of S. Charles St. and E. Heath St. Photo by Erik Zygmont Recreation and Parks. The official “use” of the land had to be changed. “That took forever,” Vorrasi says. There were also physical hurdles. Those who wanted plots paid $50, and participated in most of the five half-days it took to convert the land to a useable garden. Vorrasi says that John Wood, a nearby resident who shares the title “community garden overseer” with herself, did a lot of the physical labor. Now in its third summer, the Charles and Heath St. garden is “running over with tomatoes,” according to Vorrasi. “I picked three two-gallon buckets one morning,” she says. As it is a community garden on land owned by Recreation and Parks, the garden is operated by City Farms, which also Mr.G 1024 Eastern Blvd. Essex, MD 21221 410-686-6666 www.MrGoldBuyers.com [email protected] ...for Your Broken, Unwanted Gold & Silver Coins! 323-325 S. For all of its community gardens, City Farms provides a hose and water hookup as well as liability coverage. “The liability would have been too big if City Farms hadn’t taken it on,” says Vorrasi. City Farms has some rules for community gardeners: Seeds must be planted by Apr. 1, and plots must be cleared by Dec. 1 for the winter. If produce “hits the ground,” or falls off the plant and goes to waste, a gardener could lose his plot. City Farms will tend a plot if a gardener goes out of town, but produce will be donated. Vorrasi said that a lot of produce from the Charles and Heath St. garden is informally distributed to locals anyway. *All precious metal prices are based on present market value 1024 Eastern Blvd. Essex, MD 2122 410-686-6666 www.MrBailbonds.net CONTINUED ON PAGE 11 1 2 WE FINANCE ALL MAJOR CC ACCEPTED 24/7/365 SERVING ALL OF MD HOUSE CALLS il, ’re in ja Everyone “If you r. On Friday, July 13, Featherstone defended his East Coast Champion title against Ryan Watson of Salisbury at Du Burns Arena. “He knocked him out,” said Featherstone’s coach, Charm City legend Jake Smith, owner of the Baltimore Boxing Club in Fell’s Point. “He knocked him out of the ring, actually. It was nice.” The event benefitted the American Breast Cancer Foundation. The soft-spoken Featherstone had a standout high school wrestling career and took his skills to Oklahoma State. The Baltimore Guide caught up with him as he was gearing up for the fight. How is boxing different from wrestling? There’s a big difference. In wrestling, you can stall—it’s a strategy. In boxing, you’re fighting the whole time. Why did you start boxing? I was doing MMA (mixed martial arts), and I wasn’t efficient in striking. I wasn’t punching guys as good as I thought I could. The competition, held at Blob’s Park Bavarian Beer Garden in Jessup, is similar to the TV show of the same name. Chefs face off against each other and rise or fall on the flavor, texture, and presentation of their culinary creations. “It’s Baltimore, not New York City and Tom Colicchio,” said Dyson, explaining the judges’ slightly-more-relaxed demeanor in the Mason Dixon contest as opposed to the BRAVO TV show. “But they will tell you what’s wrong, and they do know food,” he clarified. Cooking off against Mark Timms, who once served as Hillary Clinton’s chef, Dyson advanced to round two with a three-course meal including a duo of lamb appetizer with homemade caraway crackers, a lamb meatloaf, and a strawberry shortcake with sheep’s milk ricotta. Dyson said that using a little gelatin in his CITY PET CENTER 504 S. Although the Sobo Cafe, located at 6 W. Cross St., locally sources many ingredients, Dyson said that he doesn’t like to “clutter up the menu” with that information, and lets the food speak for itself. “I fell like it’s overdoing it to advertise doing the right thing,” he said. In addition to the high-caliber ingredients, Dyson added that almost everything— including condiments such as mayonnaise and charcuterie such as chorizo sausage, is made in-house. He credited Sobo’s baker, Patrick Gramens, with “the best biscuit in town.” Contestants at Mason Dixon Master Chef have one-and-a-half hours to produce their three-course meals, and no heat or electricity may be used for the first half hour. “You can only chop and make vinai- do n a g Abo igració nm de I Need Help? Dyson said assistance from Gramens, plus his own organizational skills—he meticulously planned his cooking, leaving himself 20 “emergency minutes” at the end—made the contest experience manageable. “Yes, it’s high-pressure, but so is running a kitchen,” he said. The only panicky moment came after a miscommunication over who would arrange the dessert course on the plate. “I literally, to the second, plated the desserts on time,” Dyson said. Say hello to ice pops in flavors like strawberry basil lemonade or vanilla peach spice. The gourmet ice pops come from Pop Couture, a company started by Baltimorearea lawyers Justin Daniel and his business partner Pete Stine and debuted at the Fells Point Farmers’ Market three weeks ago, just in time for Baltimore’s 100-degree dog days of summer. Pop Couture ice pops are all natural and made with locally sourced or organic ingredients. Daniel says now is the perfect time to be in the gourmet ice pop business because people are increasingly conscious of what they are eating. “Even it it’s a treat, people want to know what’s in it and where the ingredients came from,” Daniel says. Daniel and Stine, who both have families, met while working as lawyers and decided they wanted a business that would help them escape paperwork and put them out in the community with the public. “We both loved making ice pops for fun, and we wanted to make a product we were passionate about,” Stine says. They turned their passion into a business this past April and now make about 400 pops per week in a commercial kitchen outside of the city. Pop Couture tries to keep some basic fruit flavors in stock, but is always working on new combinations. Its flavors are works in progress and some are downright experimental. “Blueberry lemongrass is probably our most unusual flavor combination to date,” says Stine. Sadly, he got hurt again, but, not long after that, Baltimore had their right fielder come back, and he has been a pleasant surprise in the leadoff spot. Nick Markakis has usually batted second or third as an Oriole. Before getting hurt, Markakis was hitting third for the O’s and doing so decently. Before his injury, he was batting .256 with eight home runs and 26 runs batted in. Since his return, the power numbers have been non-existent, but he is hitting an impressive .364 so far in the 10 games he has been back. Hitting leadoff is a tough thing to do, especially if you’re normally a second or third batter, but Nick has gotten the job done. His .417 on-base percentage is a vast improvement over the .333 he put up before his injury. Even more impressive than that is the fact that he has only struck out once in 44 at bats since coming back, compared to 37 strike-outs in his previous 199 at bats before getting hurt. Not bad for a leadoff hitter. The O’s are still in the thick of things. They are currently still holding on to the last Wild-Card spot, and they will need Markakis, as well of the rest of the offense, to start producing. Impressively, the Orioles are third in home runs in all of baseball with 120, behind the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. The bad news is that they have scored only 395 runs, which is 20th in the W E E K LY R A C I N G U P D AT E Racing News, Stats & Trivia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an and exercise for one low price • Superbeds-standups-lotions 4-8)4 "6&46 -1-5, 2-1652175 3306;;%(+3,9 $0*2@%;,5/6<:,9 <:;0533.(0,9 ,55@'(33(*, 0*/(,355,;; <:;0503365 #(92,930.,94(5 %(46950:/9 3306;;%(+3,99(330,+3(;,;6*(7;<9,%<5+(@:%&# 4-8)42*6,)$)). !(;065>0+, %,90,: 9(*, (; /0*(.63(5+ %7,,+>(@ %(+3,9(3:6>65( (:/(:/)65<:-69;/, //-266"&(/)4 518 S. That’s not good. That means they are way too dependent on the long ball. When games get tighter in September, they will need to play small ball and manufacture runs. With only a few days left before the trade deadline, it will be interesting to see what Baltimore does, especially given the fact that they’re still right in the mix. For the first time in a long while, baseball is still relevant at Camden Yards. Unlike City Farms, Baltimore Greenspace is a private organization that deals with land that can be bought, rather than city-owned land. If Baltimore Greenspace can show the city that a piece of land is being used as a Memorial Our Lady of Pompei In Loving Memory of JOHN RIPPIE Serving God’s People since 1923 3600 Claremont St Balto, MD 21224 410-675-7790 Fr. Survived by son, Chris, granddaughter Lacey, ex-wife Marie Vitale, mother, Evanjolin Rippie, 2 brothers and other family. Obituary In Loving Memory of DENISE M SIRBAUGH 6-4-53 - 7-22-12 GOD LOVES YOU AND HAS A PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE Everyone Welcome! Sunday Worship Service at 11:15 “You can be fashionably late and still be on time” 3302 Toone Street, (410)563-1177 www.cantonbaptist.net Dee lost her battle with cancer. She was loved very much and will still be loved. She will deeply be missed. Her favorite things to do were going to bingo, spending time with her grandkids and going secondhand shopping with her friend Patty. She was a strong independent woman - a single mother and a beloved friend. She is leaving behind her 7 kids (Clayton White, Aaron Bryan and his wife Julie, Nathan Ransom and his wife Amanda, Calvin Sirbaugh and his wife April, Juanita Sirbaugh and her husband Adam, Steven Sirbaugh and Cheyanna Knight). She is also leaving behind 7 grand kids (Priscilla, Bella, Zachary, Gabriella, Tabitha, Raysean and Alex). Her funeral will be held at Kaczorowski Funeral Home at 1201 Dundalk Ave on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 from noon to 1pm. She will be layed to rest at Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family is asking that you please make a donation in her name: Denise M. Sirbaugh to the Funeral Home to help with the funeral cost instead of sending flowers. If you have any questions, Please feel free to contact the Funeral Home at 410-633-0000 community greenspace, then it can purchase that land for $1 per lot. “We can only ask the city to give us this super prize if we show that something is being done with it,” says Avins. “It takes a place five years or so to go from looking like a project to looking like a place.” In some cases, abandoned, nuisance land may be used as a greenspace. Avins says that if fines and taxes from the city are ignored by a landowner, and that landowner is nowhere to be found, then neighbors to the property can improve it through the “selfhelp nuisance abatement procedure.” Community members who have made a greenspace on a nuisance property, she says, “are not squatters. They’re exercising their community’s right to abate a nuisance.” Garden show For those interested in seeing the city and community gardens, the Charm City Farm and Garden Tour is Saturday, July 28. Tours of the gardens, starting at Cylburn Arboretum, are available starting at 2 p.m., by bus or bike. Space is limited on the bus. At 5 p.m., a party will be held at the arboretum, where the winning gardens and produce will be announced. For more information, visit the Charm City Farm and Garden Tour page on Facebook, write to [email protected], or call 410-4485663, ext. 128. Master Chef: Judges choose ingredients CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 pated in the competition to raise awareness of the Sobo Cafe. He has been head chef there since last November, when a new owner took over the restaurant. Hughes of Barracuda’s had a different reason for entering Mason Dixon Master Chef. He is good friends with Erik Folkart, the founder of the competition. “He kept asking me to get in, get in, so I did,” said Hughes. “It’s the last thing I wanted to do. Monday’s my day off, and it’s nice to do absolutely nothing,” he laughed. Nevertheless, Hughes, who defeated Moses Jackson of the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, has enjoyed the competition so far. “I’m surprised—it was a lot more fun than I expected,” said Hughes, adding, “I’m 40 now and past all the accolades—not trying to downtalk it; it’s just me.” He said he was pleasantly surprised to be given an ingredient very familiar to him— crab. A pumpkin blossom stuffed with mascarpone and crab, fried green tomato with crab salad, and crab toast crostinis saw him through the appetizers. He served the judges an entree of traditional jumbo lump crab with sweet and spicy cucumber salad with Maryland tomato, and pineapple-andgranny-smith-apple crepes with crab and vanilla creme custard. Hughes said that he was very happy to have Barracuda’s sous chef, Damon Morrison, along at the competition. “He’s pretty outside the box, a pretty creative guy,” said Hughes. On Monday, July 30, Hughes faces off against Patrick Crooks of Roy’s Restaurant in the Inner Harbor for a spot in the semifinals. Dyson’s next match is on Monday, Aug. 13, against Christopher Lewis of the Iron Bridge Wine Company in Columbia. More information about the competition, which is open to the public, is available at www.masondixonmasterchef.com. Wednesday, JULY 25, 2012 The Baltimore Guide 13 Boxer: Featherstone likes to spar, not run CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 What is your favorite part of boxing training? I like sparring. What is your least favorite? It’s the running. We call it roadwork. Putting in that roadwork, man. It’s tough. But things are so much easier if you put that work in. That’s something different about boxing. In wrestling, there’s always a guy that’s better than you. If you put your time in with boxing, though, you can think your way through it. In boxing, a guy could be better than you, but it just takes one punch. Do you have trouble making weight? Not really. I have to watch what I eat. I can’t eat my fried foods that I like, and no cheesesteaks. I eat everything. I’m always eating. It’s my favorite thing to do. What’s your favorite food? I don’t have a favorite food. I don’t have a favorite color, and I don’t have a best friend. (Laughs) I like a lot of things. How do you feel about boxing in a breast cancer benefit? It’s amazing. I haven’t been around someone with cancer—nobody in my family has it. But whatever I can do to help, I’m down for the cause. I’m always willing to help whoever’s in need. Pop Couture: air conditioning for your mouth CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Avocado is also on Pop Couture’s flavor list. “We’re working on incorporating vegetables into the pops. Mango-carrot is a flavor we’re experimenting with right now,” Stine explains. Pop Couture sells its pops at local markets and caters barbecues, pool parties, and other private events. Just last week, they put their umbrella-covered freezer on a freight elevator and catered a birthday party in a down- town office building. “That was a lot of fun,” says Stine. Allison Dugdale and her husband Dan Harrison, of Fells Point, recently sampled Pop Couture’s mint lemonade ice pop at the Baltimore Farmers’ Market. “It’s excellent, not too sweet. Very real tasting,” said Harrison, as he passed the ice pop to his wife. “It’s wonderful. It’s like air conditioning for your mouth,” said Dugdale. “And you can quote me on that.” %%%cfkjf]JXk`j]`\[:ljkfd\ij ?jhiVh`hdbZd[9Vk^Y9VnÉhXa^Zcih### ?dhZe]9^7aVh^I]Z7addbhI]ZBVg`ZnhI]ZBX=VaZh I]Z;gdcX`dh`^hI]ZHnakZhiZghI]ZLZgcZghI]Z?jYnh I]Z6chZab^hI]ZO^bbZgbVchI]Z7dlbVchI]ZBj^gh I]Z6aih Let David help you today! 21 Years of Automotive Sales Experience Top 50 New & Used Vehicles Sold National 21 Years in Toyota National Sales Society Over 8,000 Total Vehicles Sold nnn%iljj\ckfpfkX%Zfd “WHERE THOUSANDS SAVE MILLIONS” SAFE! You either love it or you hate it. On a daily basis I have conversations with homebuyers or renters thinking about living in the city. As they verbally weigh the pros and cons, I always tell them, “City living is a lifestyle choice.” We have an antiquated infrastructure that recently caused gridlock traffic. We have parking tickets. It’s too noisy. There’s too much crime. The taxes are higher. There’s less living space per capita, and why in the world would you ever want to raise a family here? Oh, and don’t forget the rats—some that are large enough to have collar, a leash and a name. Alright, but hold on a minute. On the flip side, we have a plethora of restaurants from white tablecloth to greasy spoons, historical landmarks and Million Dollar View!!!!!! 6102 DANVILLE AVE - Model ONLY 2 LEFT! Being Sold “As Is.” museums, parks, national sports stadiums, and unique shopping venues— things that are not as easily accessible in the suburbs. So let’s explore “the flip side." Yes, I know there are restaurants everywhere, but within the city, residents can eat delicious food from essentially every world culture all from within a few blocks of their own kitchen. And if you don’t feel like leaving home, even the local sushi bar delivers. Baltimore, well-known for it’s seafood, has plenty of crab shacks and trout joints, both of which lure locals and tourists from across the globe. So many of these local eateries have become regular gathering places for the local urban tribe, families and friends. Often, these spots are self-proclaimed by patrons as “my living room,” “my dining room,” or even “my kitchen.” For a day of history or eye-opening artwork, a cultural experience is right outside your door at places like Fort McHenry, the American Visionary Art Museum, the Museum of Industry, or the Babe Ruth Museum, just to name a few. They offer a delightful way to show off our city. Feeling sporty or want to take in some national sports competition? It’s all right here. Go to a Ravens or Orioles game and you can enjoy pre-game festivities at a local watering hole, walk to the game, and not worry about the drive home, since you’ll be able to stumble back when the fun is over. Or hey, how many cities can watch their streets be transformed into a high-speed race track for a weekend? Original, organic, local, and reducing your carbon footprint important to you? The city offers one-of-a-kind boutiques and niche shops that sell anything from high-end designer items to funky vintage clothes and furnishings. You can clothe your kids in cutie-patootie garb, or bring home gourmet pupcakes for your furry kids. You don’t have to go too far to find shops to accommodate these needs. As far as raising a family in the city, there are probably more opportunities in one afternoon outing to learn about diversity and acceptance than you would find in a month in the suburbs. The expo- sure to not only the good things the city has to offer, but to the problems and negative aspects of the city—from litter, to homelessness, to violence and crime— teach children about why it is important to be a good community citizen. Indeed, city living is a lifestyle choice. Terri Harrington, a Locust Point resident, moved to the city three and a half years ago, when the prices started coming down. She had worked in the city most of her career and finally decided to make the move from Lutherville/Timonium. “Now that I live here, I am truly sorry I didn’t make the move earlier,” she says. “When people complain about the taxes, I tell them, “I am glad to pay them as there are far more amenities in the city. Also, there is a much greater sense of community that I never had living in the county...There’s nothing like going to the grocery store, a local bar or restaurant or church and seeing your neighbors. It’s just easier to get to know your neighbors living in the city!” This lifestyle choice is not for everyone, but I can assure you, if nothing else, you will become a master at parallel parking!
