This is my father, Thomas Morris. He served
his Country in two wars, the Korean War and
World War II.
In the Korean war he was a Forward Observer
and in World War II he was a Bombardier and
flew on the Mary Jane as Captain. My father
loved serving. Before he passed in 2002, he
wrote a memoir of his time in the Service and
what it meant to him and our family.

The photo was taken shortly after I joined the
Navy. At that time, I was a Radioman 3rd
Class. This was the Summer Uniform.
I went to boot camp in Orlando Florida and
Radioman A-School in Bainbridge,
Maryland. I then spent 4 years in Monterey
California, at the Naval Post Graduate School,
attached to the Naval Telecommunication
Station, Monterey. The medal is a National
Defense Medal, as the Vietnam War was still
ongoing when I enlisted.

Attached is a photo of my nephew, Robert
"Bert" Morris, who passed away,
unexpectedly, on September 21, 2014.
A decorated war veteran, Bert served in
Afghanistan with the 1/8 Infantry Division of
the Marine Corps. He was honorably
discharged in May 2012 as a corporal and was
the recipient of the Combat Action Ribbon,
Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Afghanistan
Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service
Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal,
National Defense Service Medal, NATO MedalISAF Afghanistan, Rifle Qualification Badge
(Expert 2d Award and Pistol Qualification
Badge (Sharpshooter). He was extremely
proud to have served his country.

This is a picture of my Dad, Luciano Pellegrini,
when he was in the Navy during World War II.
He was in the South Pacific on a destroyer, the
USS Renshaw.
He told me many stories of his adventures at
sea. The most compelling: In 1944 (I think)
they were chasing a Japanese submarine
when they were hit by 2 torpedoes. My Dad
saw them coming…but what could they do?
The torpedoes hit and the ship listed sideways
and took on water and then the boilers
exploded. The explosion killed 19 of his
shipmates and wounded my Dad. He received
the Purple Heart, which I have today.
I finally was able to meet 8 of his former
shipmates at a reunion in Las Vegas in
2007…6 months before he passed
away.

My brother, Raymond J Rowan, served in
the US Navy from 1961 to 1965 aboard the
USS Ashland. In this picture he was 19
years old.
Ray was very proud of his time in the
service and often said it was one of the
best times of his life. He passed away a
year ago yesterday so I really appreciate
this opportunity to honor him.

This is a photo of my father
and other crew chiefs in the
U.S. Army Air Corps. The
interesting thing about the
photo is that all of the men in
this photo were crew chiefs
from Texas. My father is
standing, far left, hat askew.
He was 21 years old, the
youngest of the bunch. Dad
served with the 292nd Bomb
Group and was a Chief

He served in England and
France during World War II. His
