Our Mission
JVS helps people meet life challenges affecting their
self-sufficiency through counseling, training and
support services in accordance with Jewish values of
equal opportunity, compassion, responsibility and
the steadfast belief that the best way to help people
is to make it possible for them to help themselves.
jvsdet.org
Dear Friends,
JVS is known for the dignity and respect which permeates each and every interaction within the agency. This
is directly related to the leadership of JVS President and CEO Barbara Nurenberg, whose personal integrity
and standards are ingrained in the agency’s operations.
Barbara recently announced her retirement from JVS after serving as the agency’s dynamic and charismatic
leader for 21 years. Therefore, my message centers on Barbara’s accomplishments, which are at the heart
of the growth and development JVS has experienced under her leadership.
Dedicated
During Barbara’s tenure, JVS has become one of the most significant human service organizations in Michigan, setting the highest standards and benchmarks in the nonprofit arena. Her vision has grown JVS from a
$6.5 million vocational-based safety net serving 5,000 individuals into a $20 million organization providing a variety of human services to more than 16,000 people and families this past year. JVS services help
people rebound from unemployment, disability and financial stress, provide young adults with a good start
in life and aid seniors in living fulfilling lives.
Barbara has also advanced how we honor and care for our elderly and people with severe disabilities
and address urgent community needs such as homelessness, financial crises and long-term unemployment.
To offer these programs, Barbara has expanded the agency’s funding base through government grants,
public funds and private donations, and by launching our Strictly Business luncheon in 1998 and Trade
Secrets dinner in 2005. These events not only raise critical funds for the agency, but generate awareness
of our mission among metro Detroit’s most prominent business and community leaders. These include David
T. Fischer, president and CEO of the Suburban Collection, and Mary Kramer, publisher of Crain’s Detroit
Business, who graciously headlined our 2013 events.
On behalf of my fellow board members, I express our admiration and gratitude to Barbara on her achievements and for devoting her life’s work to JVS. Her dedication has propelled JVS to the top of its class and,
most importantly, helped tens of thousands of people realize life’s potential.
Lee A. Hurwitz
Board Chair
JVS has been dedicated to the D for more than 72 years. From helping young people discover their talents
to safeguarding the dignity of our seniors, JVS is determined to help people realize life’s potential.
And we have always been devoted to Detroit. We were founded in the city in 1941, and we’ve never left.
Our office on the corner of Woodward and Canfield continues to provide support services, job training and
direction to Detroiters.
Today we serve the metropolitan Detroit area by offering programs that meet the diversity of our clients’
needs. This ranges from adult day care which helps adult children care for their aging parents, foreclosure
prevention which saves families’ homes, support services that keep individuals with disabilities integrated
into their community, to workforce development services that help unemployed workers find jobs and businesses thrive.
Our progressive services, which evolve with the changing needs of our community, have established JVS
as a distinguished leader in its field. Because of our dedicated staff, JVS was re-accredited in 2013 with
no recommendations for improvement by CARF, a rehabilitation accreditation organization. This is the fifth
consecutive survey that resulted in no recommendations, which is an unprecedented accomplishment.
This reputation of excellence helped JVS secure the largest state janitorial contract ever procured by a community rehabilitation organization. Awarded by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management &
Budget at the end of our fiscal year, the contract to clean state offices at Cadillac Place in Detroit created
more than 40 jobs for people with disabilities.
This and the other accomplishments detailed throughout this report are due to the drive of our board members who guide the agency’s development and the diligence of our staff who create award-winning programs to meet the ever-changing needs of the community. The depth of their commitment fills me with pride. I
feel privileged to have worked with them alongside hundreds of business leaders and community advocates
to help the people we serve realize life’s potential.
As I leave JVS and move on to the next phase of my career, I have reflected on the agency’s achievements
during the past 21 years under my leadership. It is the differences we have made in so many people’s lives
that are among my proudest accomplishments. As I look ahead, I know that future generations of leaders will
be inspired by these accomplishments to continue the JVS legacy of serving our community with dedication
and determination.
Barbara Nurenberg

Dear Friends,
Dignity
SENIOR
ADULTS
It’s called adult day care, but one JVS participant called it her social club. That’s
how JVS preserves seniors’ dignity…by creating programs to meet their needs without making them feel needy. We do this by connecting active seniors with employment, recreational and volunteer opportunities to help them remain productive, and
providing engaging activities to seniors with memory loss to help them stay mentally, socially and physically active.
ƒƒ Employment options and retirement planning
ƒƒ Volunteer activities for active adults and isolated seniors
370
senior adults participated in our day
care program to remain active and

Accreditation
For more than 39 years, JVS has been accredited by CARF, the international accreditation authority in the fields of rehabilitation, behavioral health,
employment and community services. During its CARF review in June 2013, JVS’s business operations and rehabilitation services received the highest
level of accreditation with 100% conformance with CARF’s international standards.
Less than 3% of the 4,000 service providers accredited by CARF achieve this superior level of performance. Additionally, JVS has received no recommendations during the last five CARF reviews, which cover 15 years of operations. This unprecedented accomplishment speaks to the quality of JVS
business practices and the programs and services below, which CARF reviewed. For a copy of the accreditation report, contact JVS’s administrative
office at (248) 233-4200.
