Dear Members,
We hope to soon be making an announcement that the new PCA website is up and running. Production is underway and as
you can imagine, it is a large project. The Breeder’s List and any updates will be heading the priority list and we ask for your
patience for a little while longer in this area.
Plans continue on the 2013 National. It will be a week to remember between the specialties, agility and companion event
trials, phalene events and much more. We hope you all can ‘Mark Your Calendars’ and plan to attend. In the meantime best of
luck at any and all Papillon functions you may attend.

Peyton made his debut into the show world by winning his first major at his first show at six months of age in Dallas,
Texas. He has been turning heads ever since. He was breeder owner-handled to his championship by 11 months of age.
He won his first Best in Specialty Show at twenty months of age under respected breeder judge, Jan Paulk, at the Papillon
Club of Tulsa specialty in 2009, following in his sire’s footsteps. His sire, Ch. Namaste Another Roadside Attraction, was
the Tulsa specialty winner in 2007 and finished his championship with a BIS from the 12-18 class.
It would not be until 2011 that Peyton would begin his formal campaign under the capable hands of Brian Livingston
and his team. Peyton caught the eye of the judges in New York City, winning the breed at Progressive Toy Club, and the
two PCA NE Regional specialties before the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Peyton won the breed at the WKC and
placed fourth in the toy group. The next month Peyton would win his first all breed Best in Show with Brian on March 3
in Fort Walton, Florida. He won his second all breed Best in Show on April 30 with Alfonso Escobedo in Beaumont, Texas. Peyton had now become the sixth Papillon whose sire had also won an American Best in Show! And only the fourth black and white male to carry a BIS title.
The year 2011 was a phenomenal year for Peyton. Brian and his team handled
Peyton to two all breed Best in Show wins and five Best in Specialty Show wins.
Peyton finished the year as the number one Papillon in breed and all breed and
received the Gold Butterfly award, presented by the Papillon Club of America to the
top winning Papillon of the year. Peyton ended the year as the number nine Toy in
the country, but he will always be number one in my heart.

MARCH 2012 DELEGATE REPORT
This is a bit late, since I have not been home or on my computer since the delegate meeting. A little time
out for the National, which by the way, was delightful, except for Mother Nature.
There were many meetings on Monday where the discussions centered around Group Realignment and
the Reserve Winners at Nationals. The latter topic was withdrawn by the club that presented it as the
wording of the amendment was garbled or not clear. It will be presented again next June meeting.
The election of the new Board members was to follow and after 3 ballots Patricia Cruz, William Feeney
and David Powers were elected. The Board meeting following the regular meeting elected Alan Kalter as
Chairman.
Many of the proposed amendments were defeated. Entries are up. AKC was First in Obedience at
Crufts (Labrador Retriever). In Agility they had 2 clear runs but lost by 15 seconds!
Staff members Robin Stansell and Curt Curtis are retiring. The new AKC website will have new buttons
for specific areas of interest. I haven’t seen it as yet.

Original Project Description:
Background: Portosystemic vascular anomalies (PSVA) and microvascular dysplasia (MVD) are
related genetic disorders causing malformation of the liver circulation. This trait affects a number
of small pure breed dogs, causing high serum bile acid values (SBA) and has a prevalence
ranging from 30% to 80% in various breeds and related dogs.
Objective: The goal is to identify a genetic marker for PSVA/MVD that will allow development
of a genetic test. Extensive pedigree studies support an autosomal dominant but incompletely
penetrant mode of transmission, explaining the dismal success of attempted trait elimination
based on SBA. It is important to eliminate this trait because affected dogs cause owner
dissatisfaction, financial burden, and negative breed publicity, in addition to patient suffering.
The researchers have discovered significant linkage between the PSVA/MVD trait and genetic
markers on one chromosome in a large family of Tibetan Spaniels. Findings have been
confirmed with flanking markers and demonstration of similar linkage in Cairn Terriers, Maltese,
and Havanese. The researchers will pursue further genetic mapping (microsatellites, SNPs) of the
PSVA/MVD trait in these and additional breeds, and undertake association mapping using DNA
banked from unrelated pure breed dogs with PSVA (n=70). Candidate genes associated with
abnormal vascular development in humans will be explored.

Grant Objectives:
Objective 1: Test informative 3 generation pedigrees of Havanese, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire
Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, Pugs, Norwich Terriers, and Norfolk Terriers segregating a
clinically identical PSVA/MVD trait with microsatellite markers encompassing the region
identified as linked in Tibetan Spaniels, Cairn Terriers, and Maltese.
Objective 2: Undertake SNP genotyping, within the region of interest surrounding the peak
LOD score location, in each dog breed with confirmed linkage.
Objective 3: After narrowing the minimal LD interval to a few hundred kilobases or less by
SNP haplotyping, we will sequence candidate regions.
Objective 4: Develop a disease-risk test that may be used to screen dogs for the PSVA/MVD
trait, even if a specific mutation is not identified.
Publications:
Report to Grant Sponsor from Investigator:
The present study has helped identify two promising disease risk haplotypes on the chromosome
mapped. Data from collective mapping studies was used to designate regions for fine mapping
by customized Sequence Capture array. We have preliminarily discovered shared haplotypes in
PSVA affected Cairn Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers (the two breeds used for Sequence Capture
mapping) within two important candidate genes on the mapped chromosome. The largest shared
haplotype spans 12,992 bp of coding and non-coding regions in an important candidate gene, and
includes an insertion shared by PSVA dogs. This area was overlooked by less dense SNP and
MS mapping efforts. We are further interrogating these regions in additional dogs (of these
breeds) and thereafter in other breeds using restriction fragment PCR studies. These regions
suggest real potential for developing a genetic test for PSVA/MVD prediction.
Work in this project has importantly excluded a number of candidate genes and transcription
factors on the mapped chromosome. Strongest SNP signals are located > 20 Mb downstream of
our best MS LOD scores that served as the initial start-point of fine mapping. These signals also
are downstream of the initially fine mapped area (Illumina GoldenGate Custom Array). Genomewide SNP mapping also completed on dogs involved in this study (GWA SNP supported by
another agency) also has permitted identification of potential candidate genes interactive with the
haplotype gene region identified on the chromosome mapped herein. Our custom Sequence
Capture array has been completed on 2 PSVA and 2 controls and is underway in an additional 3
PSVA affected and 1 control dog of the Cairn Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier breeds; (disease
prevalence in these breeds ~32% and ~65-80%, respectively). The Sequence Capture Array
findings are being validated by PCR and sequencing of discovered variants in a larger number of
dogs. The Sequence Capture array was designed using information derived from mapping work
in this project, information derived from a Neonatal Canine Liver transcriptome our team
prepared (funded by Cornell University), and GWA SNP mapping of PSVA/MVD dogs
supported by another agency. A succinct update of findings pertinent to this project will be
forwarded when the Sequence Capture Array data is fully analyzed.

If the dog being disclosed is affected with PRA ( Progressive Retinal Atrophy ) the following statement

Because this condition is carried as a simple recessive gene, both parents and all offspring of the
affected dog MUST be CARRIERS. Because PRA is carried as a recessive, NO assumptions may be
made about the grandparents of the affected dog except that ONE grandparent from each side (sire
and dam) is a CARRIER. There is currently no way to determine which grandparent carries the

A motion was adopted by general consent to grant parent club approval to the Papillon Club of Columbia
River to hold back-to-back independent specialties on December 6 and December 7th, 2012 at the Clark
County Fairgrounds.
Barbara Ankersmit made a motion to approve payment of $1,500 (estimated to be about 50% of the cost)
for design of the new PCA website. Motion seconded and adopted unanimously.
PCA has received a request to use parts of the Papillon Standard in a private commercial book featuring
90 breeds. No action was taken as no motion was forthcoming to approve this request.
The next meeting of the PCA board will be held on May 1, 2012 at 9:00 PM EDT via teleconference.
A meeting of the PCA board was also set for May 8, 2012 at 9:00 PM EDT via teleconference.

Judge Selection Process
Excerpts from SR 05-2
Criteria for the selection of judges (to officiate at our National Specialty 2015 & 2016)
a. No judge that has judged a National in the last
10 years will be eligible to appear on the ballot.
b. Only judges that have been approved to judge
Papillons for a period of 2 years prior to the
ballot year, or longer, will be eligible.
c. Any person who has been approved to judge
and award points, CC;s. etc. within their own
country would be eligible to be placed on the
ballot. Should this person receive the required
number of votes then the final approval for the
assignment would be the responsibility of the
AKC. These proposed judges can be American,
Canadian or Foreign.
d. For a person to be placed on the ballot he/she
must have received no less than five nominations from individual members.

There will be a National Specialty Conformation and Sweepstakes Judges' ballot included
with the ballot for the election of Club Officers
and Board of Directors positions

No one who is currently campaigning or associated with the campaign of a Champion Papillon will be eligible to appear on the current
ballot to judge Regular Classes at the National
Specialty. "Campaigning" means association
through ownership, co-ownership, breeding or
co-breeding of or to any dog which consistently

appears in the Top Ten rankings of our breed
as published monthly by the AKC and the Canine Chronicle."
In the event of a tie, the National Specialty
Judges' counting firm will take a straw vote to
break the tie.
The results will be published in Pap Talk.
The voted list of judges will be used until the
next election of club Officers and Board of Directors.
The committee requests that members submit
no more than four names of those persons they
wish to see officiate at our National Specialty.
And no more than three names of persons to
judge our National Sweepstakes. Send your

The 2013 PCA National Specialty will be held in the “Heart of the Bluegrass” in Louisville, Kentucky during the week of May 18th
through May 26th at the Crowne Plaza—Louisville Airport Hotel. Louisville is centrally located in the Midwest and is served by several
major interstate highways making it an easy drive from all of the major population centers of the eastern U.S. The Crowne Plaza Hotel
is located two minutes from the Louisville International Airport by the hotel courtesy shuttle. Motorhome parking with full hookups
and bath facilities are available across the street from the hotel at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Golf cart rental will also be available
for easy access to the hotel.
Be prepared for an entire week of Papillon fun!
