Get your boat inspected: Both the Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadron are ready, willing and able to inspect your vessel at no charge. Odds are you are already 100% compliant, but hey, what if they DO detect something that you or your first mate missed? This inspection has all upside reward without any risk. For further information, call the Coast Guard Auxiliary at 202 372 1261 or the United States Power Squadron at 888-367-8777. 4. Don’t ignore tell-tale signs of a problem: Clunk. Clank. ZZZZ whirrrrr. Oh, it’s probably nothing, right? WRONG! If you suspect something is wrong, it probably is. Don’t bury your head in the sand and ignore it (oh, it’s probably nothing and I’ll just wait to see if it happens again). Small problems quickly become big ones (and expensive ones). Let Occoquan Harbour Marina know. We will be able to check it out and advise if it really IS something to worry about. Okay, listen listen up! up! Preventative maintenance is an important part of your boating journey. It is very important that you frequently check the water level in your batteries. Explaining why is beyond the scope of this article, but feel free to ask me and I’ll explain. When is the last time you checked your oil level? Another neglected item I see is failure to replace impellers (engine, A/C, generator) every two years or so. Why wait until they fail? It will cause more damage and you more money. Don’t Drink & Boat: 1. JUNE/JULY 2014 Sunrise on the Occoquan Summer Slip Promotion Occoquan Harbour Marina is currently at 91% occupancy. We are all motivated and determined to reach 100%. We would like your help in helping us reach this goal! For any annual slipholder you refer (that specifically mentions YOUR name), we will provide you with a complimentary haul, block, launch and pressure wash. They must mention your name on the first visit. This promotion will end on August 31st, 2014. If we reach our goal this summer, Rob and I will host a special event at the pavilion to celebrate. Thank you for your help in making our marina the best! PRESS RELEASE SET TO OPEN! WOODBRIDGE, Va. – What once was known as Waters Edge will now be called The Landing Restaurant. Chef Troy Clayton will try to recreate an atmosphere from the Coles Point Marina restaurant in Hauge, Va. on the Occoquan River in Woodbridge, next to the Harbor View Conference Center opening June 13. The Landing Restaurant at Occoquan Harbor Marina has undergone nearly $1 million in new upgrades to include outdoor covered and uncovered decks that can seat up to 70 people, as well as a porch area that seats 70 more. It’s a look that mirrors Clayton’s Coles Point restaurant where guests outside can enjoy a finer casual dining experience, while there’s a more refined dining atmosphere on the inside. Our restaurant has been a big hit with boaters on the river, which really is a community among themselves, so we think we will be able to do well in this location,” said Clayton. Steaks, seafood, and pastas will be on the menu, but so will a special potato chip nacho with crab appetizer. Clayton says it’s one of his most popular dishes. The new restaurant will sit in the heart of coming mixed-use development that will add 750 new homes to the area in north Woodbridge. U.S. 1 is also being widened from the Occoquan River to Mary’s Way to accommodate increased traffic in the area, and a new flyover bridge is being built at the nearby intersection of U.S. 1 and Gordon Boulevard. This will be the third restaurant for Clayton, who has spent 29 years in the restaurant business. The chef also owns Geranio Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria. Water’s Edge, a nightclub and restaurant, closed last year. Childbirth at sea traditionally happened between cannons on the gun deck, and the child was recorded in the ship’s log as a son of a gun. JUNE/JULY 2014 New Occoquan Harbour Marina Apparel, Promotional Items and Gourmet Food A wide variety of Occoquan Harbour Marina apparel, promotional items and gourmet food is now available. We also have in stock women’s hoodies, sweatshirts and t shirts. The Stonewall Kitchen food is amazing and worth trying! The cigars have been provided by one of our slipholders, Jan Youmans (A 27). Please stop by to check out everything! “The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.” - Vincent Van Gogh
