As an ability activist, Chaeli has made it her life’s work to challenge the world’s understanding of what it is to create an inclusive society. As a first year university student at UCT, living in residence with a personal assistant, Chaeli is showing first-hand how differently-abled students can have a full student experience as they positively impact the perception of what that means to their fellow students. In 2004 at age nine, she teamed up with her sister, Erin and three friends, Tarryn, Justine and Chelsea Terry, to raise R20 000 for her motorised wheelchair. The success of this small project started something much bigger – The Chaeli Campaign. Chaeli won the International Children’s Peace Prize in November 2011 and was awarded the Medal for Social Activism in April 2012 by the Nobel Peace Laureates at their Annual Nobel for Peace Summit in Chicago. She is a sought-after public speaker and was the youth keynote speaker at the UNESCO Conference in Paris in October 2012. ◆ THE CHAELI CAMPAIGN The Chaeli Campaign is registered non-profit organisation (NPO). These programmes include: an Inclusive Education programme that looks at inclusion from Early Childhood Development to tertiary education; a Pay-It-Forward Ambassadors programme that grows social entrepreneurs between the ages of 10 and 14 years; Therapies which include speech, physiotherapy and occupational therapy; Assistive Devices, which range from custom made wheelchairs to the support for providing cochlea implants; Arts & Culture, which includes In the Wings, the stage production and a number of advocacy projects; finally, the African Odyssey which aims to grow The Chaeli Campaign’s African footprint. The thread that runs through each of these projects is focusing on ability and the importance of inclusion. Three thousand children benefit from these programmes each year. The Chaeli Sports and Recreation Club, a 2nd NPO founded in 2010 strongly focuses on dancing for the disabled as well as on other recreational sporting activities such as hand cycling. ◆ Contact person: Cell: Email: Website: Jared Kruger, Project Co-ordinator 083 564 3253 [email protected] www.chaelicampaign.co.za ARTSCAPE WOMEN/HUMANITY ARTS FESTIVAL AWAF BROCHURE2013-PROOF5_CS5.indd 5 5 2013/07/09 3:34 PM SHONA MCDONALD – GuEST SPEAKER Shona McDonald started Shonaquip in 1992 as a socially driven business to provide user appropriate assistive devices and community based services that could help in supporting the inclusion and equal opportunities of persons with disabilities. Since she was young, she always had an interest in sketching, but never went for any art lessons until late in her adult years. Sally studied BA Admin (Hon) at UWC and when she got married, she and husband decided that she would stay at home to raise their two children. Sally began taking art lessons at Bellville Central Library with Martie Westvaardt in the mid-1990s. She worked in pencil, pastel and watercolours. When she moved to Paarl in 2003, Sally began and still continues to have art lessons with Cathy Milner at the Stables Art Studio (Natte Valleij) and Hannes van Zyl in Paarl. She has experimented with different art mediums and now prefers working in acrylic and oil. In 2012 Sally went on an art trip to Amsterdam, Paris and London which Cathy Milner organised. Together they visited various art galleries and museums. As Sally says: “I’ve come to realise that all artists have to travel their own journey using the tools they acquire along the way. Mistakes are made, but that is what makes art unique and interesting”. About the paintings: The eight women painted represent the qualities and emotions that Sally recognised not only in her mother but in other women as well. Namely: 1. Resilience, 2. Determination, 3. Love and Tenderness, 4. Happiness, 5. Despair, 6. Confidence, 7. Hope and 8. Perseverance. ◆ ARTSCAPE WOMEN/HUMANITY ARTS FESTIVAL AWAF BROCHURE2013-PROOF5_CS5.indd 23 23 2013/07/09 3:36 PM DAILY PROGRAMME 4 – 10 AUGUST 2013 DATE TIME Sun 4 Aug 16:00 18:00 Wed 18:00 for 7 Aug 18:30 Thur 8 Aug Fri 9 Aug Sat 10 Aug 18:00 20:00 20:15 08:30 – 09:30 09:45 – 11:00 09:00 – 17:00 09:00 – 17:00 15:00 – 17:00 09:00 – 10:00 10:00 – 13:00 09:00 – 17:00 09:00 – 17:00 10:00 – 10:30 10:30 – 12:30 12:00 – 17:00 13:00 – 14:00 14:00 – 15:00 14:00 – 15:00 14:00 – 15:00 14:00 – 15:00 15:00 18:00 19:30 ACTIVITY Sally Messina Visual Arts Exhibition BAHI Healing Concert Opening of Shonaquip Wheelchair Display Installation Guest Speaker: Shona McDonald Guest Speaker: Rachel Gadsden Roxy le Roux – Guest Appearance Nancy Health Screenings: Blood Glucose & Blood Pressure Breast Examinations Breast and Bone Health Talks – Dr Sumi Padayachee WHEAT Trust Awards Marketing Your Own Business Workshop Official Opening of AWHAF Guest Speaker: Anglican Archbishop, Most Rev Dr Thabo Makgoba Guest Speaker: Chaeli of Chaeli Campaign Book Launch: Nenio Mbazima Guest Speaker: Jerry Pooe Nancy In the Wings It’s a Man’s World Yoga De-stress Workshop Women in Construction Workshop Health Screenings: Blood Glucose & Blood Pressure Breast Examinations Breast and Bone Health Talks – Dr Sumi Padayachee Gender Violence Workshop Know Your Rights Law Workshops Sport & Recreation Gymnastics Workshop Sport & Recreation Self Defence Workshop Ngangelizwe Panel Discussion Shonaquip Wheelchair Exhibition & Installation Blackbyrd in Concert Palace of the Winds Belly Dancing Workshop Women’s Business Network Workshop BRAWA Writing Workshop Weigh-Less Talk: Mary Holroyd It’s a Man’s World Nancy Talking Souls 20:00 15:00 In the Wings Talking Souls 16:00 – 17:00 18:00 18:00 19:30 20:00 20:15 Weigh-Less Talk: Mary Holroyd Vroueskrywers se Boekebekendstelling It’s a Man’s World The Sleeping Beauty (Cape Town City Ballet) Nianell & Vicky Sampson in Concert Nancy 19:00 20:15 09:00– 17:00 09:00 – 17:00 15:00 – 17:00 15:00 15:30 – 17:00 17:30 for 18:00 VENUE Theatre Well Theatre Marble Foyer Ext TICKETS Free R100.00 By Invitation Marble Foyer Ext Arena VIP Room isiBaya isiBaya Opera Bar ADE Boardroom 4th Floor Theatre Well R60.00 Free Free Free Free Free By Invitation Arena Theatre Arena Chandelier Foyer Planning Boardroom VIP Room isiBaya isiBaya ADE Boardroom 4th Floor ADE Boardroom 4th Floor Piazza Piazza Theatre Theatre Chandelier Foyer Theatre Theatre Planning Boardroom Resource Centre Theatre Well Arena Arena Magnet Theatre – Observatory Theatre Magnet Theatre – Observatory Theatre Well Theatre Well Arena Opera House Theatre Arena R60.00 R80.00 R60.00 Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free Free R60.00 R60.00 Free R80.00 Free Free Free R60.00 R100 – R250 R100.00 R60.00 24 ARTSCAPE WOMEN/HUMANITY ARTS FESTIVAL AWAF BROCHURE2013-PROOF5_CS5.indd 24 2013/07/09 3:36 PM SPONSORS DIE SON SIEN ALLES E ST . 1980 AUGUST 2013 CAPE TOWN Publications that work for you EE FR FOR THIS PROJECT Project Manager – Debbie Damons Exhibitor Co-ordination – Toberin Meyer Logistics – Tammy Cleophas PR & Administration – Mammie Qwazi Marketing/Publicity – Candice Jansen & Berniece Friedman Administration & Logistics – Yolanda Smith Project Manager Assistant – Renecia Mathys YOUR GUIDE TO THE MOTHER CITY Comprehensive updates & weekly give aways at Hello Cape Town Magazine on COUNCIL Dr Somadoda Fikeni (Chairperson), Prof Nomvula Mtetwa (Deputy Chairperson), Ms Ruth Benjamin-Swales, Ms Nobandile “Bandi” Biko, , Mr Dudley Cloete-Hopkins, Mr Andrew Horne, Mr Brandon Losper, Ms Marian Lucouw, Mr Neo Muyanga, Prof Vuyisa Tanga, Mr Tiisetso Tsukudu MANAGEMENT Chief Executive – Michael Maas Chief Financial Officer – Pieter Lourens Director: Audience Development and Education – Marlene le Roux General Manager: Stage Services – Marius Golding Manager: Human Resources – Lungisani Nkomo Planning Manager – Guy Burbidge ARTSCAPE THEATRE CENTRE MANAGEMENT Manager – John Hawkins House Manager – Hadley Tituss Box Office Manager – Jenny Pappadopoulos Maintenance Manager – Brian Zellie AWAF BROCHURE2013-PROOF5_CS5.indd 25 2013/07/09 3:36 PM ARTSCAPE THEATRE CENTRE DF Malan Street, Foreshore, Cape Town 8001 | PO Box 4107, Cape Town 8000 Tel: +27 21 410 9800 | Fax: +27 21 421 5448 email: [email protected] www.artscape.co.za AWAF BROCHURE2013-PROOF5_CS5.indd 26 2013/07/09 3:36 PM
