The 2013 Artscape Women’s Arts Festival theme is Against All Odds. This year the focus will be on humanity
and how women and persons with a disability survive and celebrate their lives.

facts on rape and how women survive and celebrate their lives. Keynote speaker will be national icon and
world famous satirist, Evita Bezuidenhout.
Panelists will include an international representative, Ms Mamta Sharma, Chairperson of The National
Commission for Women in India; Professor Amanda Gouws - Commissioner at the Commission for Gender
Equality and Professor of Political Science at University of Stellenbosch; Undere Deglon – Chief Executive

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
EVITA BEZUIDENHOUT
Evita Bezuidenhout is still the most famous white
woman in South Africa. Having been in the public
domain since the early 1980s, she is now past the
point of apology, explanation or regret. A terminal
optimist, she believes that even a flawed democracy
is the only way towards a future and regrets that
in this present upside-down society, the lowest
common denominator keeps staying on top. She is
on Twitter (@TannieEvita) and has 53,000 followers,
probably all in the same prison outside Rustenburg.

CHAELI – GuEST SPEAKER
Chaeli has cerebral palsy and uses a motorised wheelchair to get around.
As an ability activist, Chaeli has made it her life’s work to challenge the
world’s understanding of what it is to create an inclusive society. As a first
year university student at UCT, living in residence with a personal assistant,
Chaeli is showing first-hand how differently-abled students can have a full
student experience as they positively impact the perception of what that
means to their fellow students.
In 2004 at age nine, she teamed up with her sister, Erin and three friends,
Tarryn, Justine and Chelsea Terry, to raise R20 000 for her motorised
wheelchair. The success of this small project started something much
bigger – The Chaeli Campaign.
Chaeli won the International Children’s Peace Prize in November 2011
and was awarded the Medal for Social Activism in April 2012 by the Nobel
Peace Laureates at their Annual Nobel for Peace Summit in Chicago. She is a sought-after public speaker and
was the youth keynote speaker at the UNESCO Conference in Paris in October 2012. ◆
THE CHAELI CAMPAIGN
The Chaeli Campaign is registered non-profit organisation (NPO).
After nine years, The Chaeli Campaign now runs eight programmes in support of children with disabilities.
These programmes include: an Inclusive Education programme that looks at inclusion from Early
Childhood Development to tertiary education; a Pay-It-Forward Ambassadors programme that grows
social entrepreneurs between the ages of 10 and 14 years; Therapies which include speech, physiotherapy
and occupational therapy; Assistive Devices, which range from custom made wheelchairs to the support
for providing cochlea implants; Arts & Culture, which includes In the Wings, the stage production and a
number of advocacy projects; finally, the African Odyssey which aims to grow The Chaeli Campaign’s African
footprint. The thread that runs through each of these projects is focusing on ability and the importance of
inclusion. Three thousand children benefit from these programmes each year.
The Chaeli Sports and Recreation Club, a 2nd NPO founded in 2010 strongly focuses on dancing for the
disabled as well as on other recreational sporting activities such as hand cycling. ◆

The play is a coming of age story of two sisters and
while one has cerebral palsy, it is by no means a sad
or sentimental story. It tells the story of two sisters
as they battle to work past their limitations to create
the future the rest of the world sometimes fails to
see. With its witty humour, relevant and poignant
subject matter, In The Wings is a production that
will challenge, entertain and linger in the hearts and
minds of South African audiences. ◆

Guest Speaker
MARY HOLROYD OF WEIGH-LESS
Many a great organisation has started from humble beginnings, and Weigh-Less is no exception.
Founded by Mary Holroyd in 1975, with just a bathroom scale and R10 to pay for printing
and advertising, Weigh-Less’ growth and success in changing people’s lives for the better has
shown that dreams do come true if we pursue them!
Who was to know that the first meeting in Mary’s home on 25 February 1975 would quickly
spark off 13 Groups in the area, all led by Mary herself? In 1976, the first training programmes
began with Rosemary Enstrom, the first Member of Weigh-Less, becoming the first Weigh-Less
Group Leader in South Africa. In 1978, Weigh-Less held its first Slimmer of the Year competition
and also brought out its first cookbook.
The Weigh-Less food endorsement division has been in operation since 1978 with a variety of
foods manufactured by leading South African manufacturers, including the Weigh-Less Green
Band products. It’s no wonder Weigh-Less holds the dominant position in the health and weight
management sector of the food and beverage market – giving consumers a range of line items
that have been specially formulated to help them make healthy choices.
Weigh-Less has grown from strength to strength, to be where it is today, a proudly South African
organisation, which is also represented in the UK as well as neighbouring countries; like Namibia, Botswana,
Zimbabwe and Swaziland. ◆

• promoting skills development through an active volunteer programme.
Gym for Life Group displays
The South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF), in partnership with the City of Cape Town, embarked on a

Six mentors were identified by SAGF and skilled with coaching, basic administration and leadership training.
These mentors then used their newly acquired skills to train local play-leader volunteers in six Cape Town

Gymnastics and Gymnastics For All at their local community halls. To date, more than 1 000 children from 21
communities across Cape Town have participated in these weekly programmes. The Gym for Life initiative
caters for all age groups, cultures and genders as well as for abled and disabled people. The Gym for life
groups that will be on display at the Festival are from communities across Cape Town that participate in the
Gym for Life Community projects. The World Gym for Life Championship takes place at the CTICC in July 2013
which will also see some of the groups from the community projects competing in the World Championship.
Self-defence Groups

aimed at teaching important skills regarding safety and providing the necessary tools for keeping safe but
also contribute to an active citizenry and a healthy lifestyle among Capetonians. The self-defence groups
generally comprise of approximately 20 to 30 participants ranging from youth to seniors. The classes teach

GOVERNMENT COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GCIS)
The approval of the National Communication Strategy by National Government is a milestone for the
strengthening of access to government information by all sectors of the population in the country.
Communication is a critical link between government’s implementation of its programmes and the
empowerment of citizens through the dissemination of relevant government information and initiatives.
To this end, GCIS has developed the five national priorities into five key communication campaigns namely,
improved quality of basic education, provision of healthcare for all South Africans; decent work to ensure
sustainable livelihoods; reduction of crime and rural development. To achieve the objective of establishing a
direct link between government and the people, government endeavours to build partnerships with various
sectors in society. ◆

RAPE CRISIS
The Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust supports and empowers rape survivors in the Western Cape on their journey
to recovery and on the road to justice. This is achieved through our three main programmes: (1) counselling,
crisis containment and court support directly to survivors, (2) training and awareness programmes, government
partners and community groups (3) advocating for law reform with partners in the sector. Outreach into the
communities we serve, gives us capacity for social mobilisation and our strong network of partners in civil society
gives us support in lobbying influential role players at both the national and provincial levels of government. ◆

SALLY MESSINA
For Sally Messina, art started as a hobby. Since she was young, she always had an
interest in sketching, but never went for any art lessons until late in her adult years.
Sally studied BA Admin (Hon) at UWC and when she got married, she and husband
decided that she would stay at home to raise their two children.
Sally began taking art lessons at Bellville Central Library with Martie Westvaardt in
the mid-1990s. She worked in pencil, pastel and watercolours. When she moved
to Paarl in 2003, Sally began and still continues to have art lessons with Cathy
Milner at the Stables Art Studio (Natte Valleij) and Hannes van Zyl in Paarl. She has
experimented with different art mediums and now prefers working in acrylic and oil.
In 2012 Sally went on an art trip to Amsterdam, Paris and London which Cathy Milner organised. Together
they visited various art galleries and museums. As Sally says: “I’ve come to realise that all artists have to travel
their own journey using the tools they acquire along the way. Mistakes are made, but that is what makes art
unique and interesting”.
About the paintings:
The eight women painted represent the qualities and emotions that Sally recognised not only in her mother
but in other women as well. Namely:
1. Resilience, 2. Determination, 3. Love and Tenderness, 4. Happiness, 5. Despair, 6. Confidence, 7. Hope and
8. Perseverance. ◆
