GAMBLE Pastor KATHEE VAN HORN Office Manager Calvary Presbyterian Church STEVE CLAUSEN Choir Director DAVID HAWORTH Organist MARIA MARTINEZ Custodian JOSÉ MARTINEZ Maintenance Connecting Diversity in Community “The Pilgrimage to Pentecost” From Easter to Pentecost the church begins a journey of pilgrimage that embraces its Jewish roots from the Passover to the First Fruits. The great miracle of Pentecost is that people who were of vastly different languages and cultures received the Holy Spirit and understood one another. We, as the believers and saints at Calvary Presbyterian Church are blessed with vast racial, ethnic, cultural, and income diversity, but how well connected are we and how can we grow into the likeness of the Church described in Acts chapter 2??? I invite you to join with me in Bible Study, discussion, reflection, and action as we find out and grow together Connecting Diversity in Community - beginning May 14 in Cowan Hall. Summer time can be a great time to grow in faith and the adolescent years are especially critical in the formation of a young person’s beliefs. Parents, why not get your kids out of the city and into nature to help them grow in faith and experience the fun of week-long summer Christian camps? Within just two hours of LA in the Big Bear area, we have 2 wonderful camps, Big Bear Lake Christian Conference Center and Forest Home. Big Bear Lake (our Presbyterian camp) offers a limited number of summer camp weeks for kids of different ages. Forest Home is a larger and more popular Christian Camp founded by the famous Presbyterian Sunday School leader from Hollywood First Presbyterian Church, Henrietta Mears. It’s a little closer to LA and has many options for children as young as 3rd grade all the way through 12th grade. Forest Home offers camp weeks throughout the summer. http://presbyteriancamps.wix.com/bb1#!summer-programs Memorial Day This Memorial Day, think of all our freedoms and the sacrifices suffered for our rights. Pray for the mothers of lost soldiers. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States set aside for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (U.S.A.) CHANGES DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE On March 17 the democratic form of government of the PCUSA made way for an official change of the definition of marriage, from “between a man and a woman” to “between two persons, traditionally a man and a women”. This change was brought about by an amendment known as 14-F, which had passed at the General Assembly in Detroit, Michigan last summer. It has now received very strong support of the majority of the 172 presbyteries across the country and Puerto Rico. Sessions and Ministers who wish to conduct same-sex weddings in US states where it is legal to do so are no longer prohibited in any way by the Book of Order. Likewise, both the General Assembly and our local Presbytery have assured Sessions and Ministers with a traditional view of marriage that they will not be required to host or conduct any wedding services contrary to what they believe the Holy Spirit has called them to host or conduct. 5 Calvary Teens Holy Week Activities After the Maundy Thursday service in which Calvary Teens were primary liturgists, Pastor Jason led Calvary Teens on Good Friday to Bel Air Presbyterian Church, at the invitation of Rev. Care Crawford. We took advantage of the many Holy Week Spiritual growth opportunities at the large and scenic campus of Bel Air PC. On Good Friday, Teens, with the support of the Worship Committee, headed up to Bel Air to enjoy a 12-Station Prayer walk which led them throughout the Bel Air sanctuary, chapel, and grounds, reading Scripture, sharing their faith, and reflecting on how the Spirit is challenging them to grow. Teens and adults took turns leading each Station in the youth-friendly, Bible-based activity, which was followed by lunch at Souplantion. Teens and Worship Committee Member Mary Haag reflect on the meaning of the cross of Christ in their lives at Prayer Station #2. Calvary Teens reflect on the Refiners Fire, Malachi 3, at the Fire Pit, a little-known place of refuge on the Bel Air campus. Corey and the group reflect on the meaning of undeveloped property on the Bel Air PC campus as well as what remains undeveloped Spiritually in their lives at Prayer Station #10 6 Clinton leads Station #9 in Evan’s Chapel. Teens reflected on Calvary’s history and considered the church’s future. OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Calvary Presbyterian Church is a welcoming people of faith and hope in Christ Jesus, inspired by God’s word and led by the Holy Spirit.
