Welcome to Ashwell
Standing in the picturesque village of Ashwell, with
its timbered housefronts, traditional ambience and
lively community life, it’s hard to believe that the
centre of London is just 45 miles away. Just a few
yards from the east end of the village’s High Street,
Philosopher’s Gate is a small group of delightful two
and three bedroom homes that combine modern
energy efficient design with an opportunity to put
down roots in peaceful rural surroundings.
Local Roots
The history of
Ashwell is reflected
in its fascinating mixture
of architecture, including
a fourteenth century
parish church adorned
with medieval graffiti,
some of it relating to
the arrival of the plague
in the village around
the year 1350. The many
other notable buildings
include a sixteenth
century town house
that is now a small
museum. One local
curiosity is of particular
interest: a field near the
new homes, used for
drying medicinal herbs,
had a gate inscribed
with a selection of
arcane Latin phrases.
Known as the
Philosopher’s Gate,
it gives its name to
the development.

Shops in and around
Ashwell High Street
include a pharmacist,
a Post Office, a butcher,
a convenience store
and a gift gallery. There
is also a petrol station
less than quarter
of a mile away. High
street retailers and
supermarkets can be
found in Biggleswade,
Letchworth and
Royston, all within
five miles of Ashwell.
Recycling Facilities
North Hertfordshire
Council operates a
household collection
service for most waste
recycling. There are also
bins for bottles and
cans at Ashwell Garage,
around 350 yards away,
and recycling sites for
larger items like white
goods and electronics
at Biggleswade, Royston
and Letchworth.
Education & Health
Ashwell Primary,
a community school
with a dedicated music
room and a heated
swimming pool, is
a pleasant half-mile
walk from Philosopher’s
Gate. From there,
children normally
move on to the
Knights Templar School
in Baldock, consistently
rated in the top
10% of the country’s
secondaries. The
local medical practice
operates a part time
surgery in the village,
and there is a dentist
in the High Street.
Transport
The village is served by
Ashwell and Morden
Railway Station, a mile
and a quarter from
Philosopher’s Gate,
with journey times
of around 45 minutes
to London King’s Cross
and approximately 28
minutes to Cambridge.
Buses linking Royston
with Letchworth pass
by the station and
the development,
and junction 10 of
the A1(M) is just over
four miles away.

From the A1 and A1(M)
Leave the A1(M) at junction 10 and at the
roundabout join the A507 travelling eastwards,
signposted for Baldock. Stay on the A507 at
a second roundabout 200 yards on, then after
300 yards turn left into Newnham Road, following
signs for Newnham and Ashwell. Carry on through
a sharp left turn at some large sheds, and turn right
at the next T-junction to enter Ashwell Road. The
village is one and a half miles further on. Pass along
the High Street, and at the T-junction at the end
of the main street turn right, signposted for the
railway station. A few yards on, the entrance
to Philosopher’s Gate is on the left.
From Cambridge
Follow signs for Royston via the A10, and stay on
the A10 for eight and a half miles. At the junction
with the A505, take the third exit at the roundabout
to join the A505 for Baldock. Stay on the A505
through two roundabouts, then two and a half
miles after the second of these roundabouts move
into the right-hand lane to turn right following signs
for Ashwell. Three hundred and fifty yards after
passing the railway station, turn left following
signs for Ashwell, and one and a half miles
further on the entrance to Philosopher’s
Gate is on the right.
