Appearing live at The SEAC,
Sat 9th July
Last year, we held our first series of concerts in the Piper’s
Garden and we have been working hard over the winter
to secure outstanding headliners with acts such as Lisa
Hannigan, Damien Dempsey, Lynched and Sharon
Sharon all coming to Naul over the Summer. For those
who want to enjoy the more intimate setting of our
auditorium we are delighted to announce that The 4 of
Us, Lisa O’Neill, Russell deCarle, Mary Coughlan and
Charlie McGettigan will also be performing this Summer.
As for keeping all members of the family busy over the
summer, we have workshops and classes ranging from
Millinery, Wild Food Cookery to Mosaic Making.
I especially wanted to highlight the SEAC Summer Youth
Art Camp where young people will learn in fun and
creative atmosphere and enhance their printing, painting
and sculpture skills.
The SEAC continues to celebrate traditional music and it is
a great coup for the centre to be holding a special concert
called Dublin Burning. The show will use music, song
and poetry to tell the story of Ireland’s 1916 Rising and will
feature Brendan Begley and Mike Hanrahan.
As we draw nearer to the centenary of the birth of
Séamus Ennis in 1919, we will be honouring the great
man by holding a birthday event where we will be
showing some lesser known archive footage of Séamus
and having a few piper’s tunes to help celebrate his life
and contribution to traditional music.
Along with a host of great films and documentaries from
around the globe we are also putting our dancing shoes
on and celebrating the music of Ragtime and Swing with
the California Feetwarmers. I think this event will be
my personal highlight as this band can really get people
moving and that’s why we have organised special dance
classes for the show so everyone can get up and swing in
the Summer sun!
Hope you can come along and enjoy some of our many
great summer events.

“Those who win the war write the history, those who
suffer write the songs” - Frank Harte.
Bound together by a superlative level of playing and
performance that is rare and precious, Russell
deCarle with Denis Keldie and Steve Briggs are as
close to joined-at-the-hip perfection as can ever be
encountered. The musicianship is dazzling even
when the tone is understated and in the gentlest of
‘nice and easy does it’ grooves. Golden-haired
Russell delivers his rock ‘n’ roll in crowned-King
crooner style as his monstrously talented sidekicks
take virtuoso into a stratosphere that lies somewhere
between JJ Cale and the very best Gyspy Jazz you
ever heard.
Brendan Begley (Boys of the Lough), Accordions/Vocals
and Mike Hanrahan (Stockton’s Wing), Guitars/Vocals
have created a show, which tells a story of Ireland’s
1916 rising through songs, music, poetry and stories
of the era spanning 1890 to 1916. “We find songs so
familiar to generations of Irish people and shine an
extra light on their significance. Songs such as Óró Sé
do Bheatha ‘Bhaile, The Tricoloured Ribbon, A Nation
Once Again, James Connolly and A Soldier’s Song;
which would eventually be translated to Irish and
become our National Anthem. We are not historians
but just two writers, musician and singers who
happened to read a small library concerning a group
of extraordinary people, men and women who lived in
Ireland around a hundred years ago, many of whom
were writers, musicians, singers, dancers, artists, poets,
painters, sculptors and dreamers. In a week, Dublin
burned with desire, passion, anger, sadness and pride.
It was a momentous time in our history and our hope
is that the show Dublin Burning will draw people to
the story, educate, entertain and start a ripple that will
send them away seeking more information and
understanding of a very poignant, powerful, sad,
sometimes gruesome, heroic and extremely important
period of our history.”
deCarle famously fronted iconic country roots band
Prairie Oyster; his own songs are refreshing yet
familiar all at once. Distilled from the soundtrack he
grew up with, and all of the good stuff absorbed
since setting out as a performer forty years ago, the
set list ends up as full-bodied, rich and satisfying as a
bottle of deluxe Scotch whisky.
“I could sing sad songs and ballads all night long,”
he says. “I kind of live at 72 beats per minute.
Emotionally I think I’ve always been affected by the
bluesy side of life; that’s always been what stirs it up
for me.”
Highly recommended!

Eleven ironworkers eat their lunch whilst casually
sitting on an iron beam – their feet dangling in the air
high above New York, with Central Park and a foggy
Manhattan in the depths below them.
Everybody knows the photograph Lunch atop a
Skyscraper, taken during construction at the
Rockefeller Center in 1932. But its backgrounds had
remained a mystery: despite extensive research, neither
the 11 men nor the photographer had been
definitively identified.
When director Seán Ó Cualáin stumbled upon a copy
of the picture in a pub in a small Irish hamlet, with a
note that two of the men came from that village, he
decided to delve into the history of the photo.

“Never before have I been to a gig where the
atmosphere has been so electric…” - The Irish News
The 4 Of Us bring their critically acclaimed acoustic
show to the SEAC showcasing songs from their
forthcoming new album Sugar Island, as well as
songs from their extensive back catalogue.
The 4 Of Us shot to fame with their debut Songs for
the Tempted, which featured the massive hits Mary
and Drag My Bad Name Down. The follow up Man
Alive made Q Magazine's Top 50 albums and
included the UK Top 30 single She Hits Me.
Notching up an enviable catalogue of timeless
songs and six Top 20 Irish charting albums, their
music has also been featured extensively on
American, British, and Irish TV soundtracks. In 2014
the band celebrated their 25th anniversary with sold
out shows north and south - and this year promises
to be even more eventful with the release of their
new album, Sugar Island.
Don't miss this rare chance to catch them live,
acoustic, up-close and personal.

Pothole In The Sky is Lisa O’Neill’s third album,
following 2013’s Choice-nominated Same Cloth Or
Not and her debut release Has An Album. On her way
to heaven, Lisa O’Neill hit “a pothole in the sky” …a
perfect way to start this tale, this journey, this album.
Because all great things and all great art usually stems
from a bump in the road - or a pothole in the sky.
Throughout the course of this album O’Neill’s voice
goes to all sorts of places, and the music - provided by
Mossy Nolan, Emma Smith, Joseph Doyle and Seamus
Fogarty - follows her like a dark swirling storm. “My
viewing point is from the planet earth and my
perspective is influenced by my environment and
emotional experiences. My perceptions are as
individual, debatable, ever-changing and as
unimportant as anyone's” admits O’Neill. “The more I
know, the smaller I feel, the smaller I feel the more I
wonder, the more I wonder, the more I ask and the
more I learn the more I'm moved. I'm young and my
life is tiny in the greater scale of things. If a star
blinked, it would miss me, yet I can say 'stars, you've
been lovely to watch for so long’”.
Don’t miss Lisa O’Neill and her band, up-close-andpersonal at the SEAC; one of her only intimate shows,
nationwide throughout May and June in support of
her stunning new album, Pothole In The Sky.
Please book early to avoid disappointment.

For more than three decades Theo Dorgan has been an
influential and transforming presence in Irish life and
culture; through his writings as an acclaimed poet who
is also a novelist, non-fiction prose writer, editor,
translator, broadcaster, librettist and documentary
scriptwriter. But also through his pioneering work for
the arts in his native Cork, as a former co-director of the
Cork Film Festival, a former director of Poetry Ireland, a
former Arts Council of Ireland member, a member of
Aosdána and as an incisive commentator on Irish life in
newspapers and on radio. The author of five volumes of
poetry, his two prose accounts of crossing the Atlantic
under sail, Sailing for Home and Time on the Ocean; A
Voyage from Cape Horn to Cape Town, won wide
acclaim, as did his first novel, Making Way. His work has
been widely translated and he is the editor of, among
other titles, Foundation Stone, Notes Towards a
Constitution for a 21st Century Republic, A Book of
Uncommon Prayer and, with Gene Lambert, Leabhar
Mór na hÉireann/The Great Book of Ireland, a unique
manuscript volume on vellum.
In an intimate conversation with the poet and novelist,
Dermot Bolger, he will read from his poetry and discuss
his life and work and the changes that have occurred in
Irish society since he starting writing in the 1970s. The
night will be a unique insight in the mind of one of our
finest writers, looking back over his life.

After two decades of living in the UK, renowned
travel writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) returns to
America with his English wife Cathy (Emma
Thompson). In an attempt to find a way to reconnect
with his homeland, he impulsively decides to hike the
Appalachian Trail, a trek of over 2,000 miles
stretching from Maine to Georgia. With Cathy
protesting against the idea of Bill doing the trip solo,
an out-of-the-blue call from old friend Katz (Nick
Nolte), offering to accompany him, seems like the
perfect solution. But as their journey unfolds, this odd
couple realise that they may have underestimated the
scale of the adventure they have undertaken. Based
on Bill Bryson’s best-selling 1998 memoir, A Walk in
the Woods is a gentle comedy that combines breathtaking scenery with the charming chemistry of its two
veteran stars, who are clearly enjoying themselves.
“…a gentle examination of friendship and man’s
relationship with himself, others and nature; although
these ideas are part of the scenery, with knock-about
humour the main event.” Eye for Film

Hailing from Dingle, West Kerry, Pauline is one half of
celebrated singing duo LUMIERE, a project which has
seen her perform throughout the world in recent years
including a performance in Carnegie Hall in 2014.
Pauline has also performed and recorded with a wide
range of artists including Damien Dempsey, Sinéad
O’Connor, Eleanor Shanley, Karan Casey, Muireann
Nic Amhlaoibh, Andrea Corr, John Spillane and
Seamus Begley.
This vocalist and songwriter galvanised the Irish music
scene with her stunning debut album, Red Colour Sun.
Coming from the Irish tradition yet equally versed on
the world and contemporary music realms, Scanlon is
capable of making the oldest ballads sound immediate
and fresh while granting newer material a timeless
resonance. Gossamer is her first solo album in 10 years,
and is a collection of songs steeped in loss and love.
Produced by long-time collaborator John Reynolds
(Sinéad O’Connor, Seun Kuti, Herbie Hancock,
Damien Dempsey) it sees Pauline push herself out
of the acoustic and into a more electric soundscape.
Gossamer unveils her palette of ferocity and fragility
in a new, dramatic context.

When you think of Banjo Pickers in masculine terms
you instantly think of the late Earl Scruggs. If you
think in feminine terms, none other comes to mind
than Roni Stoneman. Born Veronica Loretta Stoneman
in Carmody Hills, Washington DC, the 17th child and
youngest daughter of the legendary Earnest V. (Pop)
Stoneman; who became a permanent chapter in
country-lore with his induction into The Country
Music Hall Of Fame. Roni naturally became a member
of the much and widely acclaimed Stoneman family
band who with great success, toured all across the
United States and Canada. The family gained national
recognition with their own weekly television show,
The Stonemans. Roni became a national icon in her
own rite on the iconic TV show Hee Haw as Ida Lee
"The Ironing Board Lady", plus many other characters,
including playing the Banjo with the likes of Roy
Clark, Grandpa Jones, and Stringbean.
She has earned and is undisputedly known as "The
First Lady Of Banjo" and will make you laugh with her
comedy and mesmerize you with her banjo playing.
As one of history’s greatest ever entertainers once
said, "you ain’t heard nothin' yet" and a quote from
Roni herself "hold onto your hat!".

Practical Mindfulness
Workshop

Mary Coughlan is one of our greatest female
singers. At over ten albums, she’s made the most
mature, uncompromising, wholly personal and
utterly universal music. She has taken the classic
standards of jazz balladry and the recent gems of
rock and Irish song-writing, shaken them and
offered them up new, like jewels dripping from the
deep, strewn on black velvet. Mary released her
latest album Scars on the Calendar in May 2015.
Made with long-time collaborator and producer Erik
Visser, it is Coughlan’s first album of new material
since 2008’s The House of Ill Repute. Beginning
their working relationship over 30 years, this is the
ninth album produced by Visser. It features entirely
new compositions from Coughlan, Visser
and Hensey plus two tracks from Mark Nevin
(Fairground Attraction) who previously composed
Like A Leaf From A Tree for Coughlan. Throughout
Mary’s quite extraordinary recording career she has
drawn from her legendary heroes: Billie Holiday’s
grievous, teary outpourings, the husky flirtations of
Peggy Lee, Van Morrison’s soulful wails, the defiant
chanteuse-ry of Edith Piaf. All are present and
correct in her delivery. The stage is where Mary
survives – in front of a handful or a thousand
people, she emotes, purges, atones, reminisces,
eulogises and laments, and you can’t hear the
very best until you’ve heard her story recited in
every note.

Pádraig always wanted to paint and in the early years
satisfied this need by painting stage scenery and sets
for various choral, musical and dramatic societies. In
the ‘60s he attended UCD, obtaining a degree in
Archaeology and History of Art and in the early ‘70s
studied under the watchful eye of George Collie RHA
at his Dublin studio. Since 1980 he has been a regular
exhibitor at RHA Annual Exhibitions and also at
Oireachtas, RHA Banquet, Oriel Gallery, Waldock
Gallery, Sandford Gallery, Leinster Gallery, Purple Onion
Gallery and the Lavit Gallery. Selected collections and
commissions include: Irish Distillers, Irish Financial
Centre, ESB Government Buildings, Mater Private
Hospital, Ulster Bank and Bushmills Distillery. Most of
Pádraig’s work is in oil, landscape and still life but he
also works in watercolour. His approach to paintings is
simple; “I paint what I see”. Early work was influenced
by the work of the Ulster landscape painters, Frank
McKelvey, James Humbert Craig, Paul Henry and
Maurice Wilks. Later he would come to admire the
work of Constable, and also that of Edward Seago
who worked in the late landscape of Norfolk and
Suffolk; similar to that of counties Louth and Meath.
Pádraig has always enjoyed painting still life; the work
of Chardin and that of the great Dutch and Flemish
painters, Vermeer, Willem Claesz and Pieter Claesz has
always been a great source of inspiration for him.
Pádraig Lynch’s work will be exhibited in our Easter
Snow Gallery until July 25th. Open daily, from 10am

Four Decades. Two Brothers. One Really Big Grudge.
In a secluded valley in Iceland, Gummi and Kiddi live
side by side, tending to their sheep. Their ancestral
sheep-stock is considered one of the country’s best and
the two brothers are repeatedly awarded for their
prized rams who carry an ancient lineage. Although
they share the land and a way of life, Gummi and Kiddi
have not spoken to each other in four decades. When
a lethal disease suddenly infects Kiddi’s sheep, the
entire valley comes under threat. The authorities decide
to cull all the animals in the area to contain the
outbreak. This is a near death sentence for the farmers,
whose sheep are their main source of income, and
many abandon their land. But Gummi and Kiddi don’t
give up so easily – and each brother tries to stave off
the disaster in his own fashion: Kiddi by using his rifle
and Gummi by using his wits.
As the authorities close in the brothers will need to
come together to save the special breed passed down
for generations, and themselves, from extinction.
Winner of the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2015
Cannes festival, and Iceland’s submission for the Best
Foreign Language Film category at the 2016 Academy
Awards, Rams is a warm-hearted drama laced with
wonderfully deadpan comedy.

Gigs in the

Since their initial discovery in 2014 on the awardwinning folk compendium The Ultimate Guide to Irish
Folk, The Young Folk are filling venues both at home
in Ireland and overseas. They have also played support
slots for Midlake, Imelda May and Clannad and
featured at Manchester’s Whiskey Sessions alongside
I am Kloot, Gomez, Turin Brakes, Badly Drawn Boy,
British Sea Power and Jon Allen. Primarily consisting of
Anthony Furey, Paul Butler and Tony McLoughlin as
singer/songwriters of exceptional talent in their own
right; the trio are joined by Alex Borwick and Patrick
Hopkins for most of their live shows. Currently busy
flooding Ireland and The Netherlands with national
tours, radio and television appearances and counting
president Michael D. Higgins as one of their greatest
fans; their new album First Sign of Morning is packed
with world-class songs and international appeal.
Before they have even recorded their debut album;
few bands can claim accomplishments as broad or
boast the level of interest from their musical peers as
Ye Vagabonds. Brothers Diarmuid and Brían spent
their early years making music around their hometown
of Carlow before moving to Dublin city and quickly
becoming a staple and much talked about duo on the
live scene in Ireland. Invited to play Other Voices, along
with numerous festivals; after a chance meeting at their
Electric Picnic gig, Ye Vagabonds came to the attention
of Glen Hansard who immediately invited the pair to
join him on his European tour.

Join us for the “entertaining, informative and essential”
new Irish documentary, Atlantic, with our Cottage Café
serving up a selection of deliciously fresh, sustainable
Irish seafood.
Atlantic follows the fortunes of three small fishing
communities as they struggle to maintain their way of
life in the face of mounting economic and ecological
challenges. As the oil majors drive deeper into their
fragile seas, and the world’s largest fishing companies
push fish stocks to the brink, coastal people and the
species they rely on may be reaching a point of no
return.
After previously taking a behind-the-scenes look at
Ireland’s Corrib Gas controversy in The Pipe, director
Risteard O’Domhnaill realised that a wider story of
resource mismanagement was emerging - one that
needed to be told for the sake of coastal communities
everywhere. Shot across Ireland, Norway and
Newfoundland (Canada), and with actor Brendan
Gleeson providing the voice-over, his new documentary
Atlantic tells that story.

Lynched + Damien Dempsey
Music / Ceol
Saturday 9th July
Doors 7.30pm Commences 8pm
€25 advance booking, €28 at the door
Damien’s Dempsey’s debut album in 2000, They
Don’t Teach This Shit in School set him apart as a
unique and important voice, championed from an
early stage in his career by Sinéad O’Connor and
others. The follow-up, Seize the Day, released in
2003, marked the beginning of his relationship with
producer John Reynolds, picking up many awards
and leading to extensive international tours.
Commercial and critical success continued with the
release of the No.1 album Shots in 2005, backed by
Brian Eno, and To Hell or Barbados in 2007, which
debuted at No.2 in the Irish charts. Since his first live
outings in the mid-1990s, Damien’s gigs have seen
him wow audiences across the globe, and his
performances have taken on a spiritual and soulful
quality. Our audience will get a chance to witness
that live power once again this year when he takes to
the stage in The Piper’s Garden at The Séamus Ennis
Arts Centre.
Gigs in the
Garden
Lynched are a four-piece traditional folk group who
combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with
arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian
accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans
humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs,
classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional
Irish and American dance tunes, and their own
original material. These Dublin “folk miscreants”
wowed a huge TV audience when they featured on
the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland last October and
have gone on to fill concert halls across the UK
including a headline performance at this year’s Celtic
Connections. With a new album in the works, it
looks like wider international acclaim awaits, so catch
them while you can!

Rebecca Bradley’s practice investigates the themes of
landscape and memory through painting. An ongoing
process of studio and site based research, making and
exhibiting enables her to explore the idea that how we
experience a given landscape is unfixed, and
contingent upon deep-rooted beliefs and memories. In
recent work she has concentrated on sites that occupy
the margins of urban and rural places - these are
suburbs, coastlines and agricultural land, in the belief
that they have the potential to evoke, and at the same
time obscure, natural and human narratives. Bradley’s
paintings often contain embedded found materials
which serve to archive vestiges of a place. Her adding
and removing of these fragments acts as a reminder of
their origin, and performs a kind of memory mapping
as they physically reference and index the sites they
cite. Through the very act of signifying and archiving
the site, the original place of inspiration is to some
extent lost or altered in translation, as it is processed
through the act of making, remembering and
reconstructing.
“These are paintings that deserve to be viewed closeup and sidelong, so that we are reminded why it is
that people still do and should and need to paint.” Dr. Sarah Hayden
Rebecca Bradley’s Vestige of Place exhibition will be on
display in our Easter Snow Gallery until the end of

music, Sharon began playing music as a young child

of the band’s second album Moyne Road which proved
to be a roaring success, reaching no.1 in the Irish Music

Road is a scintillating album that alternates driving, high

members themselves.” - The Living Tradition.

songs laden with creative harmonies and playing sets of
tunes bursting with explosive energy, their music always
