My Casual Cardigan
designed by Elena Nodel
Inca Alpaca
100% Baby Alpaca
Inca Alpaca is soft, sturdy and very
warm – even when wet. Alpaca is
a smoother fiber than wool, giving
it a luster that many wools lack. It’s
also a dry fiber; there’s no lanolin
to worry about if you’re one of the
folks who reacts to lanolin in wool.

As a designer and knitter myself I always look for new techniques,
unique constructions that make my knitting interesting and exciting,
thus allowing myself and others to learn new things. I strive to make my
designs seamless, easy, fun, modern, fast in knitting, and easy to wear.
I came across a wonderful new method, “contiguous set-in sleeves”,
developed by Susie Myers that allows shaping shoulders and knitting
set-in sleeves without a use of a single short row. Sleeves are worked at
the same time as the rest of the cardigan. I knew right away that this
method was a perfect match for this particular design. The method
makes the pattern beginner-friendly and produces a gorgeous garment.
My Casual Cardigan is completely seamless and is worked from the
top, and is an adult sized version of my Tomboy Cardigan (CEY WebLetter, Issue 214).
Inca Alpaca was a perfect yarn for this project; the stretchiness
and drape of the resulting fabric is ideal for any garment made with
the “contiguous set-in sleeves” technique. The yarn also has great
stitch definition, making cables or any other decorative stitches stand
out very nicely.
