Lonestar Action Sports Performs at Central Parent/Teacher
February 14, 2014 Central Middle School Newspaper Volume I, Issue VII Lonestar Action Sports Performs at Central By Jordan Kamp On Monday, February 10th, we had an assembly that was pretty awesome. At first the teachers kept it a secret, but when everybody made their way into the gym 7th hour and saw everything set up, it made up for not telling us. The sight was a big ramp, with two guys riding bikes and one on roller blades. Their names were Jon Shaw, Mat Olson, and Jaren Grob. Grob is an X-Games gold medal winning professional inline skater, while Olson and Shaw are both professional BMX riders. Together they make up Lonestar Action Sports, a group that travels the country to put on shows featuring their cool tricks and stunts at area schools. In addition to the show, they also talk about bicycle safety, drug awareness, and making the choice to do positive things in life. Although they share it in a different way, their message is much like that of the Strength Team, who we saw earlier in the year. At the end of the presentation, they wrapped up their performance with a backflip by Mat Olson, performed over top both Mr. Netty and Mr. Thomas. Overall, it was a great assembly with a positive message. Lonestar Action Sports has also performed on such television shows as “America’s Got Talent”. You can find additional information about the group at www.lonestaractionsports.com . Parent/Teacher Conferences Set for End of February By Ashley Gardenier The second set of conferences for the 2013-2014 school year are set for Tuesday, February 25 from 4:00 to 7:30 PM, and Thursday, February 27 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM. There is no school on Friday, February 28. 1 Voting Open for Gold Star Teacher Awards By Kendra Woodward and Taryn Ray The Gold Star award is for you to pick your favorite teacher. Also it will make that teacher feel good about how they teach and act in the classroom. Gold star winners are for teachers that have made a difference in your life and others around you. It will also let them know that you are thankful for the dedication, and it will allow you and opportunity to say thank you to them. A few weeks ago, packets were given out to you in your homeroom class. Take time and fill it out. Anyone can fill it out including students, teachers, parents, administrators, staff members, community members, even teachers who self-nominate. Also know that you do not have to pick a teacher from Central. It can be from any school, like a teacher you have had in your previous years of schooling. Also, take notice that if a teacher has won it in previous years, they cannot win it again. If you do vote for them, they will still know you made a nomination. If you do plan on voting for a teacher but do not have a ballot, you can get a packet from the office. You do not have a lot of time though. They do have a due date, which is March 1st, 2014. The 2014 games started one day before the opening ceremonies. The reason is because there are twelve new events making their way into the Winter Olympics. Some of the events include: Ski Half Pipe, Ski Slopestyle, Biathlon, and Women’s Ski Jump. In total, eighty eight countries will be vying for the gold in events from February 6th to February 23rd. The United States has over 250 athletes on this year’s team. Shaun White, one of America’s most successful and well known competitors, has failed to win any medals this year. White had to pull out of the slopestyle competition due to injury, so that he could focus on half-pipe. Despite a good final run, he finished in fourth place. One of the most popular female athletes on the US team is Gracie Gold. The eighteen year old figure skater helped America claim a bronze medal in team event earlier this week. So far America has won four gold medals, two silver and six bronze . Therir total of twelve ranks them fifth in the overall standings behind Germany, Canada, Norway, and the Netherlands. Super Bowl 48 Provides Little Excitement By Jordan Papenheim For all of the excitement leading in to the biggest game of the year, Super Bowl XLVIII (48) was not a very action-packed game. The teams that were playing were the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. Broncos fans were certainly not very happy with the result, as the final score of the Super Bowl was 43-8, the Seattle Seahawks coming out on top. The Broncos top ranking offense only scored one touchdown , which was in the third quarter. Even though the game was a blowout from beginning to end, Super Bowl XVLVIII still managed to break television ratings records. There was also a lot of talk before the game about the weather. This was the first Super Bowl to be played outside in the open air in a cold weather environment. (Continued on Next Page) 3 (Continued from Previous Page) Although there were several snow storms and days of freezing temperature in New Jersey leading up to the game, much like the Broncos, things did not pan out. The weather was calm and the temps were nice come kickoff. Unlike much of the game itself, the halftime show was outstanding, bringing in more views than the actual Super Bowl. Bruno Mars and The Red Hot Chili Peppers were the performers at the overwhelming consensus is that they did any amazing job . So, all in all, it was a one sided beat down by the Seattle Seahawks, with an energetic pop concert in the middle. A Public Service Announcement from Mystery Staff Writer: Be Nice! By Mystery Staff Writer I’m going to be honest with you all, most middle school students don’t treat each other very well. We’re rude to most people. So what if somebody doesn't listen to the same music, or have the same hobbies, or wear the same sock brand as you? They are still people, and you should be nice to people. All people. Words stick. Think about what you say before you say it. When I walk through the halls I hear a lot people that do not realize they’re being rude or mean to somebody, they think that they are “just playing”. Actually, it really hurts them. You do not have the right to make people feel bad about themselves. If you’re going through something bad, talk to someone. Don’t use it as a reason to be mean to someone else. That’s just not cool. In closing, you do not need an excuse to be nice to people. Try it sometime. You might just like it. It will make others feel good instead of put down, and heck, it just might make you feel good too. With today being Valentine’s Day and all, now seems like a pretty swell time to start. 4 February 14th: Valentine’s Day! By Dallas Keck and Chandler Keck Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia. In the United States, one billion dollars’ worth of chocolate has been sold in the last week leading up to today. In addition, fifteen percent of all women will buy themselves flowers, and two percent of all pet owners will get their pets a gift on Valentine’s Day. To celebrate the occasion, we asked members of the Knightly News team to give us their best pick-up lines. Below are some of our favorites. Maybe you could use one of these to tell that special someone just how you feel or perhaps you’ve got some smooth lines of your own. Either way, enjoy, and happy Valentine’s Day! Film studio 20th Century Fox just released the first trailer for the romantic drama last week, which stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgory as two cancer-stricken teens. If you have read the book then you are likely prepared, but if not: have your tissues on hand! Though the 2:30 clip doesn’t quite contain the existential magic the book’s pages do, it’s damn charming all the same, and should get fans even more excited for the film’s summer release date. In this movie and novel by John Green, he explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love. Overall, I would rate the trailer an 8.5 out of 10, as it looks to be a strong companion piece to the novel, even if it isn’t able to capture all of its glory. ______________________________________________________________________________ REVIEW: FLAPPY BIRD By Jordan Slater Flappy Bird is a side-scrolling mobile game available for both the Apple and Android Markets. The objective is to direct a flying bird, which moves continuously to the right, between each oncoming set of pipes without colliding with them, which otherwise ends the game. It was created by Vietnamese video game programmer Dong Nyguyen. The game was released on May 24, 2013, but received wide spread popularity only within the last month. Flappy bird is the most annoying game I've ever played. It makes me want to throw my phone across the room and that is exactly why I believe this game is genius. The fact that it is so simple to play makes any person able to give it a try, and once they do… well let’s say there's really no getting out of it. It's genius. The simplicity of the retro inspired graphics make the game look easy but in reality it is not. If you haven’t already downloaded this addictive app, then it appears you are too late. On February 8th, Nyguyen announced that he would be taking down the game permanently as the rapid success had negatively impacted his life. The game was generating $50,000 a day in advertising sales. iPhones featuring a download of the app are now selling on Ebay for as much as $90,000! Overall rating: 10 out of 10. 6 Events Coming Soon to Central Middle School By Marco Ayard The table below outlines upcoming events for the week of February 17th through the 21st.
