As we approach the holiday season, I am extremely grateful to be the principal
of Cape Coral High School. We are so fortunate to have an amazing group of students,
parents, teachers, and staff members who have worked together to make us one of the top
high schools in the state of Florida.
We have recently received some of last year’s test results and they clearly indicate that our
students are performing at an extremely high level. Our 2015 IB, AP, FSA, and EOC scores
consistently rank in the top 3 among the 13 high schools in Lee County.

In addition to our academic success, we have seen our students excel outside of the classroom,
as well. We sent 12 students to the State Championships for swimming and diving with
Megan Galbreath winning a state title in diving. Our girls’ golf team won the District
Championship and Brooke Ciccone placed 36th at the girls’ golf State Championship.
Our girls’ cross country team advanced to the Regional Championships for the first
time in school history.
These are just a few of the many fall sports highlights and our winter sports teams
are already off to a great start. As you can see, there is much to be excited about
here at Cape and I can’t wait to see where we go next!

Thanks to all who participated in the 2nd annual PINK OUT football game at
CCHS. The cheerleaders were able to donate close to $500 to the Making Strides
for Breast Cancer Walk. CCHS supports the fight! Go Seahawks!

Model UN Wins Best Delegation
In late November, 23 students traveled to compete in the Old City Model United
Nations Conference, hosted in St. Augustine. In Model UN, students are assigned a
country to represent in debates focused on many of the most pressing issues facing
the global community. We are pleased to announce that the CCHS group earned the
recognition of Best Delegation!
We had several students win individual awards and all of the kids exceeded
expectations. But winning the team award is by far the most important of honors
because it reflects on the whole group.
Participation and success in Model UN requires research skills, public speaking,
creativity, and quick thinking. With an inexperienced group (5 kids with 3 or more
years), a 1st place award is a tremendous accomplishment for the students. The
secret to the success of the club is preparation and high expectations from the older
students. And they did everything they could to help the newer students learn the
process quickly.
Cape High has one of the best debate teams in the country. We have competed
with, and outperformed, many of the elite private schools from around the world.

Art Department Field Trip
On Thursday, November 5th, the Visual Arts
Department took a field trip to the Baker museum
in Naples, FL. 60 students and the three visual
arts teachers, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Rider, and Mrs.
Heinemann took an early sojourn from Cape High
to arrive at the beautiful art museum in Naples
Florida in time to take individually led docent tours at 9 am.
“The Baker Museum is the foremost fine arts museum in
Southwest Florida. Emphasizing modern and contemporary
art, the museum hosts several traveling exhibitions annually
to complement installations of works from its permanent
collections. Dedicated to stewardship and scholarship, The
Baker Museum provides world-class exhibitions and educational
opportunities for Southwest Florida’s diverse community.”
Students had the opportunity to get up close and personal
with impressive works by such artists as Pablo Picasso, Georgia
O’keeffe, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder,
and Henry Moore. Many students had never been to an art
museum before this trip and were in awe at the opportunity to
see in person artwork which had previously only been seen in
books and on the internet. Having the ability to see art in person
with the added benefits of size ratio and carefully manipulated
lighting play a huge role in one’s personal inference of a piece.
During the visit, students went on tour with an educated docent
generously provided by the museum and learned many “behind
the scenes” stories about the art and the artists. After the hour
tour, students were free to tour the museum on their own and
able to linger longer at favorite
or most intriguing pieces.
One
exhibit
that
students were lucky enough
to see was “Weegee by
Weegee” which consists of
a very large collection of
photographs from the Jean
Pigozzi collection. Weegee
was a famous photographer
whose gritty documentary
photographs of everyday
city life in New York have
become very famous since the early 1940’s. The museum
quotes the collection as an “exploration of human nature
and especially its inclination towards ridiculous behavior and
morbid impulses.” Some may even recognize his “Afternoon
Crowd at Coney Island, Brooklyn” as being used for the cover
of George Michael’s 1990 Album “Listen Without Prejudice”.
Another exhibit that was recently installed at the museum was
pieces from Louise Nevelson’s Dawn’s Forest. Louise Nevelson
was a pioneer of a type of sculpture known as “assemblage”.
She is often credited with starting the style in which found
objects are arranged in specific compositional manners to
elicit a response from the viewer. This particular collection
includes monumental and complex assemblage made up of
abstract wood elements that were painted in monochromatic
colors. According to the museum curator, “Nevelson is widely
recognized as one of the preeminent American artists of the
last half of the 20th century” IB students will be creating pieces
next month that are inspired by her techniques and consistent
with the theories associated with assemblage.
The last exhibit that students were able to view was a
15th anniversary retrospective of the museum’s permanent
collection entitled 15 Years of Collecting, Naples Collects.
Some of the artists represented in this tour are Jackson Pollock,
Diego Rivera, and Oscar Bluemner. The most
recent addition to the Baker museum is included
in this tour and was a collection of two-hundred
20th century art pieces donated by the wife of
Olga Hirshhorn, wife of Joseph Hirshhorn who
assisted in the collection represented here as
well as that of the National Hirshhorn Museum
in Washington, D.C.
The visual arts department is proud that they
organize and execute bi-yearly field trips to get
students out to see art in person. This spring’s
field trip will be in February to the Salvador Dali
Museum in St. Petersburg Florida.

Seahawks Swimming And Diving Team Did
Not Disappoint At State Championships!
Megan Galbreath did AMAZING on the 1 meter board and won the GOLD! Megan is our STATE CHAMPION by 30 points! This is our first State Swimming
and Diving champion since Colleen Healy won the 100 Butterfly in 2002! The Girls 200 Medley Relay team—including Savannah Bowser, Megan
Rissler, Amanda Lee, Nicole Jimenez, Gigi Koprowski and Stephanie Kraus, went
into the meet seeded 15th and finished 12th overall, breaking the school 200
Medley Relay record set in 2011 (by Jenn Crawford, Kaitlyn Angiletta, Monica
Jaeger, Michaela Steakley) by over 2 full seconds!!! Way to go Ladies!!!
The Boys 200 Medley Relay (Santi Rosas, Jonah Martinez, Jack Pellegrino
and Wayne Bilancione) did a season best time by over three seconds finishing
13th overall.
Jonah Martinez broke the school 50 Freestyle record held by Rich Marzonie,
set in 1998!!! He also finished with a season best time in the 100 breaststroke and
an 8th place medal, marking the 5th straight year that we have had a swimmer
medal in the 100 Breaststroke.
Freshman Jack Pellegrino finished 22nd in the 100 Butterfly, keeping the
tradition alive that we have had a swimmer qualify in a butterfly event every year
since 2002!!! Look for big things from this freshman!!!
Senior Savannah Bowser finished her season strong! Overcoming a car
accident just last week that almost sidelined her for the season, Savannah pushed
through the pain and finished 6th overall in both the 200 and 500 Freestyles and
was an integral part of the record-setting relay! Way to go Savannah!

Boys Varsity and JV Soccer
We have started our Soccer season as winners.
Not only on the field but coming together as big
fundraisers.
Led by the Varsity Team we have already had
2 Major fundraisers.
We want to Thank Matt Beder owner and
Kristine Gordon General Manager of Culver’s
Restaurant on the Parkway for donating 100
Culver’s Calendars to our Soccer Program.
We also want to Thank Iguana Mia for hosting
our Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday November
21, 2015.
None of this would be possible without the
hard work and dedication of our Varsity and Junior
Varsity Soccer Teams. They are all Champions!
We also want to thank all of our Soccer
Families for their help and support. We couldn’t
have done this without you!

ATHLETICS
Cape Athletes Sign to Harvard and
Jacksonville University
On November 13th, CCHS had two wonderful student athletes
declare their intentions to “take it to the next level” and compete
in their sport in college! Makenzie Buss signed to play softball at
Division I softball powerhouse Jacksonville University and State
Champion diver Megan Galbreath committed to dive at Division I Ivy
League Harvard University. Both of these young ladies have worked
extremely hard to reach this level (NCAA Division I—that’s amazing!!)
and we are super proud of them and their accomplishments!
